The 33rd day of the Omer is an occasion for happiness, during an otherwise mournful period. The explanations begin with the Omer period itself, those 49 days that are counted off one by one between Passover and Shavuot. This is a time of semi-mourning, when weddings and other celebrations are forbidden, and as a sign of grief, observant Jews do not cut their hair. According to a medieval tradition, the plague ceased on Lag B'Omer, the 33rd day of the Omer. As a result, Lag B'Omer became a happy day, interrupting the sadness of the Omer period for 24 hours. This year, Lag B’Omer is observed on Thursday, May 3rd.

For children in grades K - 7, friends, parents and grandparents. The service is informal, includes a story, grape juice, and challah, and is followed by a Mac & Cheese Kiddush lunch!

MEMBERSHIP SUPPORT

All AJ members will be receiving semi-annual statements around the first week of July. In keeping with a policy set by the Board of Trustees, all membership support levels will

receive a small cost-of-living increase. The synagogue’s revenue from membership support does not completely cover all the expenses incurred in operating our shul. This small increase is intended to help offset inflationary increases in the Congregation’s normal recurring operating expenses. All members are encouraged to take full advantage of a wide range of Jewish programs and services at AJ made possible by the generosity of our members. Thank you for your support!

Celebrate Father’s Day at Adath Jeshurun with authentic New York Deli and a Movie!

SUNDAY, JUNE 17, 2018 ▪ 6:30 p.m. Featuring the award-winning film Sallah Shabati, a 1964 Israeli comedy about the chaos of Israeli immigration and resettlement, featuring Chaim Topol who played “Tevye” in the 1971 movie, Fiddler on the Roof. The film begins with Sallah Shabati, a Jewish immigrant, arriving with his family in Israel. He is immediately taken to live in a transit camp, and is given a dilapidated, one-room shack in which to live in with his family. He spends the rest of the movie attempting to make enough money through his comical schemes to purchase adequate housing.

Join us on Sunday, April 15th at Adath Jeshurun from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. for a Brown Bag Blessings Packing Party!

This Tikkun-Olam driven event will be sponsored by Carly Schramko, Jack Kaplin, and Julia Geer as a part of their mitzvah project. The April Brown Bags will be donated to “The Forgotten Louisville”, an organization that serves weekly meals to local homeless men and women. Rabbi Robert Slosberg and the three b’nai mitzvah students along with “The Forgotten Louisville” volunteers will be distributing the Brown Bag Blessings to the homeless immediately following the packing party.

Students, parents, grandparents and friends of all ages are invited to support this community outreach program. There is no cost to participate and supplies for the April Brown Bag Blessings will be provided by our b’nai mitzvah sponsors. Visit adathjeshurun.com/brownbagblessings to sign up.
