Because grants play an essential role

in supporting the University’s

academic mission, I am pleased to

recognize the members of our faculty and

staff who applied themselves to the task of

grant-writing this year.

This publication is a tribute to their work.

Grant-writers devote many hours to the

painstaking process of seeking external

support for projects that provide academic

enrichment and hands-on learning

opportunities for our Cal U students.

These projects also benefit participating

faculty and staff by opening doors to research

and/or professional development. In many

cases, the broader community benefits, as well.

Grant-funded projects this year will explore

environmental issues in Pennsylvania, across

the United States and around the world. Grant

awards will support service-learning and

teacher preparation, improve public safety,

strengthen connections with the local

business community, and raise awareness of

important societal concerns.

In addition to the direct benefits of these projects, each one helps to raise the University’s

profile and cement Cal U’s status as a valued participant in the educational, scientific and

cultural life of our region.

I sincerely thank each of the grant-writers whose work is acknowledged in this edition of

Laude. And I commend the Office of Sponsored Programs & Research for working closely with

faculty and staff to identify funding opportunities and navigate the grant-writing process.

You have my deepest appreciation for the time, energy and positive spirit invested in grant-

writing this year.

With warm wishes,

Geraldine M. Jones

Interim President, California University of Pennsylvania
