Allen House Herb Garden – Shrewsbury

This year marks the 40th Anniversary of The Herb Garden at the historic Allen House, which was designed, planted and dedicated by our garden club in 1974. Each spring we tend to the herb garden, adding annual herbs, labeling and replacing plants as necessary. Over the summer, members are scheduled weekly to care for the garden: dead heading, weeding the garden and the brick path leading to the steps and watering the garden when necessary. In the fall we add compost to the soil and cleanup for the winter. The Herb Garden Study Group, formed to advance our knowledge of herbs because of our work here at the Allen House Herb Garden, meets seasonally to continue our studies on herbs with hands-on projects and field trips.

The Herb of the Year for 2013 is Elderberry. The wild elderberry is a tall shrub, exceeding six feet, with clusters of cream-colored, sweetly fragrant blossoms (among the most beautiful of wild bloom) that appear in May. Harvest the blooms to make elder flower cordial, tea, shrub (Colonial era cocktail that is popular once again) and elderflower fritters. Once the berries appear in August, let them ripen and turn purple-black. Gather them before the birds get them to make shrub, elder syrup, cordial and jelly. The Herb of the Year for 2014 is Artemisia which includes wormwood, southernwood and tarragon and so we will continue our studies.

Borough Hall – Shrewsbury

Our club members design and maintain all the planters in the courtyard entrance to Borough Hall. Contact: Kathy Keller and Nadia Nigro. Members participating: 4

Cottage Garden – Shrewsbury

Our club planted a cottage-style garden in front of the Shrewsbury Historical Society in 2006. The design is a formal background of boxwood planted with loose, carefree plantings of flowering shrubs (azaleas, deutzias, hydrangeas, abelia) and perennials (echinacea, fall asters, goldenrod) in the foreground for attractive color and forms year round. Contact: Nancy Schmaltz. Members participating: 6

Greenhouse Garden – Shrewsbury

The Greenhouse Garden, located near the entrance to Manson Park was once a greenhouse for the Wardell Estate. In 2008, once the area was cleared of debris, a walled garden was designed and planted with David Austin roses, clematis and other fragrant flowers. Recently planted snowdrops and a crabapple tree will give the garden four season interest. Contact: Terese Blake. Members participating: 6

9/11 Memorial Gazebo – Shrewsbury

Located across from Borough Hall, the Memorial Gazebo, dedicated in 2004, is surrounded by a beautiful garden that is maintained by the club. Many town festivities are held here and the garden is seasonally updated with plants in the spring and fall or greenery for winter. Contact: William Gerth. Members participating: 6

Patriot’s Isle – Shrewsbury

Sickles Park – Shrewsbury

Club members have plant perennials and bulbs around the flag pole at Sickle’s Park (Robert Graham Athletic Park) to add lasting beauty. Weeding and deadheading will be done throughout the year. Contact: Jill DeFelice. Members participating: 2

Community Garden – Shrewsbury

The SGC Community Garden plot is tended as a Potager Garden where vegetables, herbs and flowers are grown together. Last summer we grew six (6) different varieties of sunflowers and several varieties of squash and pumpkin for the fall. Last winter, we grew garlic! Our plot serves as a test garden to conduct lessons on planting seeds, irrigation and other garden techniques. Our club also has worked on Plant a Row for the Hungry (PAR), an effort that encourages those who grow vegetables and fruit in excess of their own needs to donate that excess to food distribution centers or soup kitchens; donations go to Lunch Break (local soup kitchen in Red Bank). New Projects 2013-2014 Sea Bright Restoration Project In line with the Central Atlantic Region (CAR) theme of Rally Our Region – Restore, Refurbish, Replant, we have designed and planted two small garden beds in front of two recently re-opened businesses in Sea Bright.

Dune Grass Replenishment – Sea Bright Our garden club is working with several other local garden clubs, the American Littoral Society and Clean Ocean Action to restore the sand dunes and the endangered Plover habitat by planting dune grass native to our area.

Kitchen Garden - Shrewsbury Borough School We are working with the school to create a Kitchen Garden – It will be a learning experience for the children – seed starting, the botany of plants, and how companion planting can help plants stay healthy.

Shrewsbury Garden Club Note from our President:

Part of our stated mission as the Shrewsbury Garden Club is to stimulate interest in gardening and encourage civic planting. What better example of these two principles at work than the Herb Garden at the historic Allen House? Designed, planted and dedicated by our club in 1974, the garden has been lovingly maintained by our members ever since. Each year, hundreds of visitors walk through the garden, admiring the various herbs and flowers, and learning more about the remedies the plants provided during the community's colonial period. The garden serves as the perfect backdrop to the Monmouth County Historical Association’s “Tavern Fest” at the Allen House in the fall, and is a featured attraction for the “Weekend in Old Monmouth” tours in the spring. This coming year, we proudly celebrate the 40th anniversary of this beautiful and historic garden. It is the best example of what makes our garden club a treasured and vital resource in our community. Maureen Collins President, Shrewsbury Garden Club
