Why is the formula for sodium chloride NaCl....

.... but the formula for sodium  oxide is Na 2O  ??

Answer:

In every IONIC COMPOUND, the charges (ions) must BALANCE

the TOTAL NEGATIVE CHARGE must EQUAL the TOTAL POSITIVE CHARGE
