WHERE ELSE CAN A KID WATCH A CANNON LOADED AND FIRED in the morning and play on the beach in the afternoon (and get
a hands-on history lesson she’ll never forget in between!)? How about a zipline
in the afternoon and the wonders of the constellations under the Northern sky
by night? From the Straits of Mackinac with its two historic forts and one magic
Mackinac Island, to the miles of sandy beaches at Petoskey and Wilderness
State Parks and the starry galaxies of Dark Sky Park (yep, a park devoted to the
night sky), this area is made for memorable family vacations. No kids you say?
If you’ve ever seen the sun set behind the Mackinac Bridge, or from the bluffs
of Mackinac Island and Harbor Springs, or the marina at Bay Harbor, you’ll
understand, we’ve got romance and then some up here. Ready, set, your perfect
vacation is waiting. —The editors of MyNorth.com and Traverse, Northern

Thorne Swift Nature Preserve: This Lake Michigan beach is a bit of a secret, tucked away in a pretty 30-acre preserve near Harbor Springs. It’s just 300 feet of frontage, but on most days you’re likely to have it all to yourself. A great spot for young families, there’s 1.5 miles of easy hiking trails and boardwalks through dunes and cedar swamps, and an interpretive nature center for kids. On Lower Shore Drive, off M119 four miles north of Harbor Springs. 213.526.6401, LANDTRUST.ORG.
Zorn Park: A great little slice of sand sidled up to a natural harbor on Little Traverse Bay, just steps from downtown Harbor Springs. The beach has lifeguards, a swimming raft and a sandy-bottomed swim area; the spring-fed waters are clean, clear and exhilaratingly cold. A grassy knoll and shade trees provide a spot to roll out the picnic blanket and enjoy a take-out lunch from Harbor Springs’ many great eateries. 231.526.7999, HARBORSPRINGSCHAMBER.COM.
Petoskey State Park: This expansive beach on Little Traverse Bay, smack between Harbor Springs and Petoskey, is a local favorite. Sand volleyball courts, campsites, hiking trails and lots more; be sure to climb the stairs to Old Baldy, a stable dune just behind the beach, for a fabulous view of the bay. On M119, four miles northeast of Petoskey. 2475 M119, PETOSKEY, 231.347.2311.
Crooked Lake: This meandering lake northeast of Petoskey is part of the Inland Waterway—an interconnected chain
of rivers and lakes stretching all the way from Petoskey to Cheboygan. On the lake’s western edge is the community of Conway, where Township Park has a petite beach, a bubbling artesian well and a picnic-perfect grassy park. On Merritt Street/US31 in Conway.
Peninsula Beach: A short walk from downtown Boyne City, this public beach on Lake Charlevoix is primo for picnicking or just parking a lawn chair to spend the afternoon with a good read. It’s actually one of two Boyne City beaches; the other, Tannery Beach, is the perfect place to launch a canoe—and is also popular among dog lovers for letting the pooches jump in for a swim. 310

STURGEON BAY DUNESOne of our all-time favorite destination beaches is this remote, seven-mile-long shoreline that borders Wilderness State Park. Low dunes, tall grass, scrubby pines, and a beach that you can walk for miles and miles. Park your beach blanket closer to Cross Village for the most pristine sand, or head farther east where the shoreline becomes pocked with stones for great rock picking. On M119 about five miles past Cross Village. landtrust.org.

Bear River Whitewater Park: Bear River Valley Recreation Area’s recent $2.4 mil-lion facelift included returning a spectacular stretch of the Bear River to its natural, wild state. Dams were removed, industrial areas were cleaned, and the result is one of Lower Michigan’s few true whitewater experiences, with challenging drops and rapids to thrill experienced paddlers. (Beginners can put in at the Mitchell Street launch.) You won’t have to travel far to find it; the park is just steps from downtown Petoskey. Find the park’s main entrances off Lake and West Sheridan Streets; maps with launch sites available online. PETOSKEYAREA.COM.
Shepler’s Great Lakes Cruises: The company whose name you might recognize from the Mackinac Island ferry docks also offers cruises around the Straits. Maritime history buffs will love the lighthouse cruises, which head into Lake Huron, Lake Michigan and Les Cheneaux Islands to offer rare views of historic, often-inaccessible lighthouses. This year, Shepler’s is also offering five “night sky” cruises; we bet the Perseid meteor shower cruises on August 11 and 12 will be unforgettable (reserve your spot early online). 556 E.
CENTRAL, MACKINAW CITY, 231.436.5023, SHEPLERSFERRY.COM.
Bear River Canoe Livery: For a slow, scenic paddle, rent canoes or kayaks through this laid-back livery, which offers one-, two-, and four-hour trips along a quiet stretch of the Bear River. Perfect for new paddlers and families with young kids, with lots of scenery and wildlife sightings along the way. 2517 MCDOUGALL RD., 231.347.9038.
Boat the Inland Waterway: The meandering, 40-mile Inland Waterway is Michigan’s largest interconnected chain of lakes and rivers, stretching from Pickerel Lake east of Petoskey all the way to where the Cheboygan River empties into Lake Huron. Round up your friends and rent a pontoon for a day of fishing, swimming, sightseeing and picnick-ing along the way. Indian River Marina between Burt and Mullett Lakes has rentals and can suggest the best spots for exploring along your trip. 3020 APPLE BLOSSOM RD., INDIAN RIVER,

PADDLE LITTLE TRAVERSE BAYLittle Traverse Bay is a 45-square-mile heaven for kayakers, with plenty of protected shoreline beg-ging to be explored. Our sugges-tion: Launch in the early morning and paddle from downtown Harbor Springs all the way to the historic lighthouse at the end of Harbor Point peninsula (you’ll make it back in time for brunch). Or, try your hand at paddleboarding, the region’s favorite new watersport. Rentals, lessons and guided tours available through The Outfitter in Harbor Springs. 153 E. Pedal Little Traverse Wheelway:This turn-of-the-century former railway, stretching more than 26 miles along the bay between Charlevoix and Harbor Springs, now serves as one of the region’s most scenic nonmotorized trails—a haven for recreational riders. The wide, paved path-way makes it especially friendly for families with small children. The “East Segment” in Petoskey is a lovely section; start at the Little Traverse History Museum, and continue along Bayfront Park (a perfect picnic spot)
and through the gorgeous Victorian-era community of Bay View. Map available online. TRAILSCOUNCIL.ORG.
Mountain Bike the Trails of Boyne:Hop the chairlift for a ride to the top of Boyne Mountain, where you’ll find a range of trails suited to all levels of riders. Cross-country mountain bikers can test their skills on scenic downhill runs; for adrenaline junkies, there’s Boyne Highlands’ experts-only Bike
Park, where narrow, naturally cut trails and obstacles like ramps and jumps will challenge even the most aggressive riders. Bike rentals available on-site. 600 BOYNE HIGHLANDS DR., HARBOR SPRINGS,
231.526.3000, BOYNE.COM.
Headlands International Dark Sky Park: There’s no camping at this Mackinaw City property, but visitors are encouraged to bring sleeping bags, chairs and blankets and stay out into the wee hours of the morning for incredible stargazing. Check online for cool programming throughout the summer, like guided constellation viewing, stargazing picnics and a “Harvest Moon Dance.” 15687 Headlands Rd., Mackinaw City, 231.348.1704, emmetcounty.org/darkskypark.
Avalanche Mountain Preserve:This heavily wooded, 30-acre gem of a park in Boyne City is interwoven with a disc golf course, hiking and mountain biking trails, and a 462-step staircase to the top of the mountain, with a viewing platform to take in the spectacular vista overlooking Lake Charlevoix. 1129 WILSON ST., BOYNE CITY,
231.582.6597, CITYOFBOYNECITY.COM.
The Great Outdoors
The Lower Peninsula’s largest piece of contigu-ous undeveloped land encompasses 10,000 magnificent acres of forest, wetlands, meadows, dunes and 26 miles of Lake Michigan shoreline. And it’s all yours to explore. Hit the miles of trails, which include a five-mile section of the epic North Country Trail, by foot or mountain bike; rock-hunt, picnic or take a dip along the gorgeous hike-in beaches on Sturgeon Bay; or pack a field guide-book and take a photo safari of the abundant wildlife, keeping eyes peeled for rare Great Lakes native species like Pitcher’s thistle and Houghton’s goldenrod. Overnighters can stay in one of the park’s rustic but cozy cabins, some of which are on the water, some in the woods. Three rustic bunkhouses and 250 campsites are available as well; reservations necessary. 903 WILDERNESS PARK

FORTSFort Mackinac: One of the most scenic spots on all of Mackinac Island is also hal-lowed ground in Michigan history. Perched high atop a limestone bluff on the island’s southern side, the 1780-built Fort Mackinac was a strategic outpost for British and U.S. armies for more than 115 years. These days, the parade grounds and historic struc-tures—including the oldest building in the entire state—have been preserved as interactive exhibits, with costumed inter-preters leading demonstrations to show what life was like within the fort for the soldiers and their families who called this place home. Reenactments include cannon salutes, rifle firing, historic medical treat-ment demonstrations, children’s games and even Victorian-era baseball. Stay for lunch in the fort’s Tea Room, where you’ll find spectacular views over downtown. 231.436.4100, MACKINACPARKS.COM.
Colonial Michilimackinac: Cannon smoke, musket firing and gazing out at the Straits over the palisade walls are hallmarks of every visit to this colonial fort and fur-trading village. From 1715 to the early 1780s, this fortified encamp-ment served as the western Great Lakes’ fur trading epicenter; these days, the Mackinaw City landmark is on the National Register of Historic Places, serv-ing as an open-air, live-action museum and active archaeological site (more than a million artifacts have been unearthed here since excavation began in 1959). A great destination for families, as many of the interactive exhibits are designed with kid participation in mind: Children can try their hand at soldier drills, crafts, Victorian dances, games, and even helping tend the vegetable garden and cook dinner over the open hearth. 231.436.4100, MACKINACPARKS.COM.
Pond Hill Farm: A working farm with friendly barnyard animals, a “squash rocket”—a giant slingshot for flinging gourds into the fields—and hayrides every weekend from May through October. PONDHILLFARM.COM.
Michigan Fisheries Visitors Center:History meets science in the cool exhibits at this state-of-the-art fish hatchery. 8258 S. AYR RD., ODEN, 231.348.0996.
Movie Night at Camp Pet-O-Se-Ga: Catch a family-friendly flick in the open-air pavilion every Saturday night at this county park on Pickerel Lake. Open to campers and non-campers. 11000 CAMP
PET-O-SE-GA, ALANSON, 231.347.6536, EMMETCOUNTY.ORG.
McGulpin Point Lighthouse: At 145 years old, this is one of the oldest surviving lighthouses in the Straits. Open daily for tours. 500 HEADLANDS DR., MACKINAW CITY, 231.436.5860, EMMETCOUNTY.ORG.
Vintage baseball: Using uniforms and equipment dating back to the sport’s 19th-century origins, Petoskey’s vintage baseball club—the Mossbacks—makes the spirit and sportsmanship (and occasional outlandishness) of America’s favorite pastime come alive. Admission is free; schedule online. MOSSBACK.WIX.COM.

Bike the island: The island’s original 1898 ban on cars was looking out for the livelihood of the carriage drivers—but it opened the door for bicycle culture to flourish, too. Pedaling Mackinac’s eight-mile perimeter is a wonderful way to explore the landmarks and drink up fabulous views of the sparkling Straits. Find the bike rental shops near the ferry docks downtown.
Fudge: Candymakers here have been whipping up this sweet confec-tion since the late 1800s. Most of today’s fudge vendors still use the time-honored, labor-intensive technique of “paddling” the warm, liquid fudge on marble slabs until it cools. A slice or two is the ultimate souvenir.
Arch Rock: Mackinac’s unique geologic history created dramatic limestone landmarks, the most famous of which is Arch Rock, a rare for-mation rising 150 feet out of the water on the island’s southeast shores. A must-stop photo op.
Nightlife: The island’s historic saloons buzz with music and energy after sunset. Start the bar-hopping at the Pink Pony, a legendary watering hole for sailors, or Horn’s Gaslight Bar, allegedly the first Michigan establishment to gain a liquor license post-Prohibition.
Butterfly House: Meander through this 1,800-square-foot enclosed tropical garden while hundreds of butterflies flutter peacefully around you. It’s magical, and educational, too; don’t miss the interactive Insect World exhibit for some hands-on learning. 6750 MCGULPIN ST., MACKINAC ISLAND,
906.847.3962, ORIGINALBUTTERFLYHOUSE.COM.
Carriage Rides: A horse-drawn buggy tour is a quintessential Mackinac experience—and a fitting way to view the island’s beautiful Victorian homes. Mackinac Island Carriage Tours, the oldest and largest continuously operating horse-and-buggy livery in the world, offers narrated
tours of landmarks and historical points of interest. 7278 MAIN ST., MACKINAC
ISLAND, 906.847.3325, MICT.COM.
Governor’s Summer Home: Originally built as a private summer cottage, this pristine Victorian mansion was sold to the state in the 1940s and converted to be used as the governor’s summer resi-dence. Open for free public tours every Wednesday through the sum-mer. MACKINACPARKS.COM.
Lilac Festival: The romance of Mackinac Island is arguably at its peak during this 10-day festival, a tradition that began with a horse-drawn parade more than 60 years ago on “Lilac Sunday.” Music, walking tours, wine tast-ings and more, all set to thousands of lilac trees in bloom. June 6-15, MACKI-
NACISLANDLILACFESTIVAL.ORG.
Architectural Tour: Mackinac’s rich architectural history spans some 300 years—so, no surprise the entire island is on the National Register of Historic Places. A self-guided tour gives a taste of the gems here; highlights include a Native American birch-bark chapel, candy-col-ored Queen Anne cottages, an elaborate Tudor Revival-style mansion, and, of course, the iconic Colonial Revival-era Grand Hotel. Walking tour guides available online. MACKINACISLAND.ORG.

Guerney’s Harbor Bottle Shop:Tucked in the back of a wine store in downtown Harbor Springs, Guerney’s no-frills deli counter has developed a passionate following for its fresh-sliced meat-and-cheese sandwiches on super-soft, house-baked bread. Good Hart General Store: The spec-tacular drive along M119 is made better with a stop at the deli inside this 1930s-era general store.
