Ever wondered if one of your garden plants is actually a weed? Ask the expert, Weeds Agronomist, Trevor Armstrong. Trevor will give practical tips for identifying weeds and demonstrate control techniques. Bring flowering specimens of your weeds for identification and control advice.

Then join members of the Pennywort Creek Bushcare Group to plant and help restore the bushland. Afterwards take a guided walk in the park to view rare plants and finish with morning tea (please RSVP for catering purposes).

Go behind the wire at Greenbank9:30am to 12:45pm Tuesday 22 JulyGreenbank Military Training Area

Take a bus trip to a little known part of Logan – the Greenbank Military Training Area (GBTA) – which has one of only five remaining vine forests south of the Brisbane River.

As a large area of intact lowland forest in the greater Brisbane region the area is a critical refuge for many plant species.

Cost is $20 per person. Bookings are essential. The bus departs from Corinda Railway Station, Browne St Corinda at 9:30am, returning to the station at 12:45pm. Please bring morning tea and water. Covered shoes must be worn.

Join a walk to White Rock9:00am to midday Wednesday 23 JulyRedbank Plains – details provided upon registration.

Echidnas, wallabies, kangaroos and even dingos have been seen in the White Rock - Spring Mountain Conservation Estate near Ipswich. The area has abundant bird life, including endangered species such as the Glossy Black Cockatoo.

The seven kilometre walk will take about two hours. The degree of difficulty is generally easy to moderate, with a few steep sections. Participants should be of moderate fitness. Bookings are essential.

Queensland Urban Utilities operates the Oxley Sewage Treatment Plant (STP), which treats domestic wastewater and trade waste from the southern and western regions of Brisbane. Join us for a free bus trip and see how applied science and engineering are protecting Moreton Bay.

This eight kilometre return walk by a local field naturalist will ascend a spur to the Spring Mountain ridge, and follow the ridge to the Spring Mountain peak itself. The walk takes in outlooks in all directions.

Bookings are essential. Due to the topography, this activity is for the more serious bushwalker. The degree of difficulty is generally moderate to steep. Bring lunch, snacks and water.

The Benarrawa Bushcare Group was formed in 1994 with the aim of restoring riparian habitat along a small un-named tributary of Oxley Creek at Benarrawa Park, Corinda. The creekside was once a run down, overgrown suburban wasteland. Thanks to the group’s efforts native fauna are slowly returning to the area. Join the group for a tree planting and mulching activity followed by morning tea.

BBC students get to work at Oxley Creek9:00am to 10:30am Saturday 26 JulyOxley Golf Complex, 1020 Oxley Road, Oxley

Students from Brisbane Boys’ College have teamed up with the Oxley Creek Catchment Association and SEQ Catchments to rehabilitate a site at the Oxley Golf Complex. Over the next four years, the students will work to eradicate weeds and increase native plantings along a stretch of Oxley Creek, as well as Pennywort and Mayfly Creek tributaries. The area has long been in need of rehabilitation, with extensive weed infestation and poor habitat health.

Visit the site and learn more about the work planned, finishing with morning tea (provided).

Relax in the winter sun while enjoying a family picnic under the fig trees with activities on the green at Strickland Park.

The Oxley Creek Environment Group will be running games for children and there will be kite flying if the weather is suitable. Bring a rug, picnic and your own kite, or buy one for a gold coin donation.

Take a walk around Whites Hill7:30am to 8:30am Sunday 27 JulyMeet at the reserve entrance at the corner of Jones Road and Kildare St, Carina

The indigenous name for the Whites Hill area is Boolimba meaning place of magpie larks. You will certainly see lots of birdlife on this easy one hour walk around White Hill Reserve, guided by members of the Whites Hill – Pine Mountain Community Group.

This walk passes through dry reserve which features Tallowwood, Grey Gum, Brush Box, Queensland Blue Gum and White Mahogany.

Join the Oxley Creek Catchment Association for a tour of Crewes Creek in Logan to learn more about this special tributary of Oxley Creek. Part of the nationally recognised Flinders-Karawatha Corridor, the creek supports habitat for many vulnerable, rare and threatened species.

The walk will be led by experts in native flora and fauna who will provide their perspective on this significant region. Morning tea provided.

Many years ago a very degraded Nosworthy Park was gifted to the community by the Nosworthy family.

The Nosworthy Park Bushcare Group formed 10 years ago to remove weeds and noxious vines that had grown in the revegetated area. Join the group for a guided walk, enjoying the varied and peaceful outcomes of the restoration, which continues as a ‘work in progress’.

Connect with nature on the Melaleuca CircuitWalks at 9:00am and 10:00am, each lasting 40 minutes Sunday 27 July Karawatha Forest, meet at first picnic shelter, Illaweena St Drewvale

Join members of the Karawatha Forest Protection Society on an easy 40 minute walk through Karawatha Forest, and find out why this site is so special.

The 1km Melaleuca Circuit passes through a variety of habitats including freshwater lagoons, open woodland forests, and large scribbly gums along the lagoon edge.

Two guided walks will be held on the day, leaving the Illaweena Picnic Area at 9:00am and 10:00am.

Take part in Australia’s largest community tree planting and nature care event, National Tree Day, by joining this event at Deebing Creek. The Ipswich City Council has teamed up with Planet Ark and Toyota to restore the Deebing Creek wildlife corridor, through Council’s Habitat Connections program.

Plant native trees along the banks of Deebing Creek and then enjoy a free BBQ lunch. Please wear covered shoes.

Join one of Australia’s most accomplished and published nature photographers, Michael Snedic, for a free nature photography workshop in celebration of the Enviroplan Photographic Competition 2014. The competition for 2014 launches in July. The two photography workshops aim to provide support for budding photographers in capturing the right photograph to enter this year’s competition.

Michael Snedic will deliver two free workshops, suitable for all levels. Participants will accompany Michael on a walk through Queens Park to photograph the local flora and fauna. Participants must bring their own cameras, manuals, tripods and any other equipment they wish to use during the workshop. Bookings are essential, and will open in late June.

Oxley Creek Common is a large natural wetland environment and an important area of open space within urban Brisbane. More than 204 species of birds have been recorded on the Common.

Join a walking tour of the Common lead by field naturalists, while learning about the site’s colourful history.

The tour leaves from the ‘Red Shed’. Please bring binoculars.

Join the Oxley Creek Catchment Association’s CreekWATCH industry partners and the local community to help revitalise the CreekWATCH rehabilitation site in Salisbury. Activities will include weeding and cleaning up along the banks of this beautiful section of Stable Swamp Creek.

Go bird-spotting on the Gamlen Circuit7.30am to 11:00am Thursday 31 JulyHardings Paddock, Carmichael Road, Purga (Ipswich)

Walk the Gamlen Circuit at Hardings Paddock with members of Birds Queensland and expect to see a wide variety of birdlife, including honeyeaters, lorikeets, robins and Grey-crowned Babblers.

Rated moderate in difficulty and about 3.5km long, the Gamlen Circuit travels through varied

habitat. The walk finishes with morning tea at the picnic ground.

Follow Carmichael Road to the end; meet at the first picnic ground.

Are you ready to become a beekeeper? In this entertaining and educational workshop, entomologist Dr Tim Heard will teach you the basics of keeping native bees.

Participants will see Tim open a hive and be able to observe the amazing structures within. Tim will divide the hive into two halves, demonstrating the process of colony propagation.

The workshop, including morning tea, is $25 per person or $15 for concession card holders. Please BYO lunch. Join us for a guided walk through Toohey Forest to collect native seeds and learn about this amazing natural space. The vegetation of Toohey Forest is particularly noteworthy because of the species combinations, especially in the shrub layer.

Learn all about the puzzling Platypus6:00pm to 8:30pm Thursday 31 JulyOxley Creek Common conference room, Sherwood Road, Rocklea

When Europeans naturalists first saw the Platypus, they thought it was an elaborate hoax! The scientists suspected that somebody had sewn a duck’s beak onto the body of a beaver-like animal.

Learn about this fascinating mammal from wildlife experts at a free workshop suitable for all ages.

The workshop will also outline a Platypus survey along Oxley Creek to be conducted the following week, and how people can be involved in the survey as volunteers.

Help create a snapshot of Platypus populations5:00am to 8:00am Saturday 2 AugustMortimer Park, Caladenia Street and Mortimer Road, Acacia Ridge

Join a unique event to document the Platypus population along Oxley Creek and its tributaries.

The Oxley Creek Catchment Association is conducting the first Platypus survey of Oxley Creek since 2008 and needs volunteers to act as spotters, at various locations along the creek and its tributaries.

Volunteers will be briefed at a pre-survey workshop at 6:00pm on 31 July. This free workshop will also cover all aspects of the Platypus. Survey volunteers must register by 20 July and ideally attend the workshop.

Celebrate nature at Pooh Corner7:00am for bird-watching walk 9:00am for kangaroo, flora and fauna walk 7:00am to midday to visit the new Environment Centre Saturday 2 AugustWolston Rd, Wacol (UBD 197 K16)

Pooh Corner will be a hive of activity, with an open day at the new Pooh Corner Environment Centre and guided walks to see birds, kangaroos and other wildlife. The new environment centre is situated in a patch of bushland which is home to Squirrel Gliders, Powerful Owls, Nightjars, Red-necked Wallabies, Swamp Wallabies, and a large population of Eastern Grey Kangaroos.

Join local bird experts on a two hour early morning bird identification walk when a variety of honeyeater, parrot family, fairy-wren and finch species may be seen along with winter visitors such as Rose Robin.

Then see magnificent Eastern Grey Kangaroos in a natural environment. Pooh Corner is home to Brisbane’s only large viable population of kangaroos.

Learn more about Pooh Corner’s flora and fauna on a 4km walk led by local field naturalists and representatives of the various groups responsible for saving this precious site. The walk is easy and flat, suitable for large-wheeled strollers.

Be one of the first to see the newly completed Pooh Corner Environment Centre. Learn more about the area from the displays by local groups.

Meet the ‘snail whisperer’, John Stanisic, Australia’s foremost expert on land snails and their association with rainforest and limestone habitats. John will run a free workshop about snails as part of the Southside Sustainability Centre’s open day.

The Southside Sustainability Centre features a native plant nursery, community garden, heritage poultry displays, native revegetation areas, water recycling and water efficiency demonstrations, photovoltaic cells, artwork and a sensory garden.

This open day includes a free morning tea.

Join members of Birds Queensland for a walk to Pelican Lagoon at Oxley Creek Common (just over 4 kms return).

Pelican Lagoon is made up of two lagoons and is a haven for waterbirds. Walkers should expect bush birds including honeyeaters, fairy wrens and grassbirds plus birds of prey and waterbirds. The walk will conclude with morning tea at the Red Shed (please BYO morning tea).

The walking track is suitable for wheelchairs and strollers.
