St. Francis Church, Greensboro - Franciscan Newsletter
Citation preview
September 2014
My Dear Franciscan Friends,
As we say good bye to Robert, we are also preparing to welcome a
new Assistant Rector. While we don’t have a time line to share,
searches can be quick or may take some time, we do have a search
committee that will assist me in making that call. Jim Tanner, our
Senior Warden, and three vestry members, Kris Cooke, Susan
Tysinger and Claudia Reich have agreed to work with me in this
godly endeavor. We ask your prayers and support as we move
through the discernment process.
While that is going on we are moving forward with the Capital Cam-
paign, our fall stewardship program, and the start up of Christian
Formation programs for adults, youth, and children. On September
7th we will return to our program year schedule for Christian Formation programs. Adult
Forum, Children’s Chapel, Middle School Sunday School, and Coffee Talk will be at
9:15am. On September 7th we will return to the 10:30am worship time and Sunday School
for grades k-5 will be held during the 10:30am Service.
We are honored to have the Rt. Rev. Anne Hodges-Copple join us on the 7th to preach, teach
and celebrate the Eucharist. Following the 10:30 Service we will host a reception in honor of
the Bishop. This will be a great opportunity to meet Bishop Anne and welcome her into our
faith community. I have had several opportunities to hear her speak and to engage in conver-
sation. She is an impressive person of deep spirituality. She shares Bishop Curry’s commit-
ment to find new ways to engage our culture with the transformative love of God.
After the reception, she will have a lunch meeting with the Vestry. During that meeting we
will have a conversation that will explore several questions that are central to our faith during
this particular moment in time. We will address questions such as:
What has and is changing about how we share the liberating, reconciling love of God in his
Son, Jesus Christ with our wider community? What works? What used to work doesn’t any-
more?

The Feasibility Study phase of the Capital Campaign process has been completed and the re-
sults are positive for a Fall launch to our campaign. We are working with the Episcopal
Church Foundation consultant, Andi Tilmann, to bring the results to the congregation as soon
as possible. We plan to make copies available to the congregation of the entire Feasibility
Study report (uncut and unedited) should anyone be interested. Stay tuned for major develop-
ments in the near future and thanks again to everyone who participated in the survey. We were
all encouraged by the amount of parishioners who took the time to give us vital information
about our proposed Capital Campaign.
The Steering Team
How might we move beyond our doors and beyond traditional approaches to outreach in order
to be companions on the Way and sharing our faith with those who have moved away from
faith?
These and other questions about faith and action in our post-Christendom context are extremely
appropriate for us to address as we move forward with our Capital Campaign. They focus upon
the ‘why’ of our Campaign and will help us build together a clear vision of our mission and min-
istry.
So, may God bless us and lead us into our destiny and purpose as a faith community of Jesus’
disciples.
God’s peace be with us,
Michael

CHILDREN’S/YOUTH CHRISTIAN FORMATION
On September 7th, our year-round schedule will begin, with Chil-
dren's Chapel at 9:15am. This is a child-friendly worship experi-
ence, patterned after the liturgy so that children can both learn the
liturgy and be engaged in it. Children's Chapel will meet in the
sanctuary, and will include a brief snack-time at the end.
The Middle School Sunday School Class will also be at 9:15am
in St. Mike's. This class uses biblical lessons and service to create
a unique experience for all middle schoolers.
The High School Sunday School Class, Coffee Talk, will also be
at 9:15am in the Coffee Talk classroom. This is a class where
high schoolers can come and fellowship with one another, have refreshments, and talk
about a wide variety of topics facing them today.
Please note that Adult Forum classes are at 9:15am, so that parents can bring their chil-
dren to any of our age-appropriate classes and have a time to gather for discipleship
among themselves as well.
Sunday School for children aged preK-5th grade will be during the 10:30 Service, where
children will continue in Christian Formation by delving deeper into Scripture in a rele-
vant, engaging, fun, and educational way.
Children will rejoin their parents in the congregation at the celebration of the Holy Eu-
charist. We hope that this schedule will allow all children and their parents to hear God's
story in a way that is age-appropriate and engaging for all participants.

The Book of Common Prayer defines the rite of Confirmation as "a mature public affirmation of
faith and commitment to the responsibilities of Baptism." Confirmation signifies the passage into
adulthood within the Church, and we want our confirmands to be able to make adult decisions
about their faith and their involvement in their parish.
Taking this as our foundation, we are excited for this year's Confirmation class to begin this fall.
The class will be open to any person in at least the 9th grade. We will be using the "Confirm not
Conform" curriculum, which emphasizes the need and right of youth to forge their own faith
identity. This curriculum will include 16 sessions, and a retreat. We will begin on October 12th,
and we will meet in the Library from noon-1:30pm each Sunday. Lunch will be provided, and
parents will be asked to pay $75 for the cost of lunch for the year. We will not meet as regularly
scheduled on Parish Hall Eucharist Sundays (first Sunday of each month), but will instead use
those Sundays as make-up days for those who have missed sessions.
Traditionally, our Confirmation class has included a retreat. While the details of this year's retreat
are not yet settled, parents can anticipate a retreat one of the last weekends in March. I look
forward to this new and exciting Confirmation program, and will be happy to answer any
questions. Full details, including a detailed schedule and an outline of norms, expectations, and
goals will be further discussed at the October 12th session, where **parents are asked to attend
with their youth.** If you would like to sign up a youth for the Confirmation class, please email
me at [email protected] or call me at the church office at 336-288-4721, ext.13.
Blessings,
Amanda Harmon

EFM ANYONE?
My father was a Marine in WWII, a side benefit of that is a wide range of vocabulary! But one
of the slogans for the Corps used to be that we want a few good men. Well as one well known
author once said, 'A good man is hard to find.' Extra points if you know the answer, all Darnell's
are excluded from this offer!
But I digress. For over 30 years I have been a mentor in the EFM program sponsored by The
University of the South. I have had groups in every parish I have served. Education for Ministry
is by far the best adult Christian Education program I have ever seen. Why? Because while
there is an important educational component in which participants learn a great deal of what I
learned in seminary about Scripture, tradition, history, liturgics, theology, and ethics, it is an
opportunity to learn how to think Theologically...to see life through the lenses of Jesus' eyes. It
is an opportunity to grow, to be transformed, reshaped by God in community and to have fun
doing it.
So back to the Marine metaphor. I am looking for 3-4 people who might be interested in being
changed and transformed by God and by participating in my EFM group on Tuesdays from
12:30 -2:30pm. EFM is not designed for those who wish to go to seminary and be a deacon,
priest, or bishop. EFM is designed to educate people for living, for living a normal everyday life
in which one learns how to see the sacred clothed in ordinary garments, how to live as a disciple
of Jesus, and how to bring Christian knowledge to bear on the decisions and little actions of our
lives.
Interested? Call me at the office, 288-4721 or on my cell, 404-1951, or email me
at [email protected]. I will be glad to tell you more! ~ Michael

BISHOPS VISIT
On Sunday September 7th the Rt. Rev. Anne Hodges-Copple
will be with us for her first visit with St. Francis. She will
preach and celebrate at both Services and lead the Adult
Forum at 9:15am. As part of the Bishop's visit and the kick
off of our fall program year we will enjoy some special music
during communion as voice and violin will meet in the song
The Voice. The violinist will also join in other music
offerings of the day. After the 10:30am Service we will have
a reception in her honor that will be followed by a lunch
meeting with the Vestry.
PARISH WIDE SPAGHETTI LUNCH AND MISSION TRIP FUNDRAISER
EYC invites you to come to a Spaghetti Lunch on Sunday, September 21st right after the
10:30am Service, in the Parish Hall. We will have lunch and discuss the recent Mission
Trips to several local organizations and to Glory Ridge. Mission trips are always a blessing
to those served and those serving, and we would love to share our story of service with you!
The Spaghetti Lunch also functions as a fundraiser for the EYC, so that we can continue to
go on our Annual Mission Trips and be the hands and feet of Christ in our communities.
ALL YOUTH need to be present at this event!

PARISH PICNIC
On September 14th we invite the entire Parish to gather together
for a Lunch on the Lawn, immediately following the 10:30am
Service, to kick off our church year as a community. There will
be food, games, kid activities, prizes and plenty of fellowship.
Hotdogs/hamburgers and beverages will be provided by the Fel-
lowship Committee. We ask that each family attending bring a
side or a dessert to share, please drop off in the Parish Hall
Kitchen. Although we’ll have a few tables and chairs set up,
please bring your own chairs or blankets for the best dining ex-
perience. Canned food donations for the Urban Ministry will be
welcome. Our lunch will proceed, rain or shine.
FELLOWSHIP COMMITTEE
Our fellowship committee is working to create
more opportunities for us to spend time as a
community, while enjoying a variety of social
activities. Building on the success of last year we
are scheduling some more great opportunities for
fellowship within our church community this
coming year, some repeats and some new.
Amongst other things, we have plans already in the
works this year for the Parish Picnic, Karoake/
Poker night, Parents night out, parish Christmas
carol gathering and a continuation of the dinner
clubs. If you have any ideas or suggestions on
events, outings or opportunities for fellowship this
coming year, please contact

HEAVEN HELP US
If you have a musical talent of any sort (Guitar, vocals, spoons, tu-
ba….) and are looking for a chance to share it, our church band
needs you. Heaven Help Us meets once/week to practice and pro-
vides musical leadership at the Parish Hall Eucharist at 9:15 on the
first Sunday of each month, starting in October. We are actively
recruiting new members to join our band this year. All ages, musi-
cal instruments and talent levels welcome. Please contact Jay Bren-
nan at [email protected] for more information.
ACOLYTING
Ages 11 through adulthood: Your opportunity to serve!
The ministry of acolytes is a time-honored tradition of the Episcopal Church.
Acolytes assist the priest and help lead the congregation through the service.
St. Francis is now recruiting acolytes to begin serving, stating this fall. Sched-
uling can be arranged for families (up to 4) to serve together. Training classes
will be held in September, beginning with September 7th at 4:30 p.m. in the
Nave. If you are interested in this ministry, please contact Lynda Cook at 312
-2681 or [email protected].

JUNIOR CHOIR IS COMING!!
Junior Choir will begin rehearsals on Sunday, September 7th at
4:30 pm. All young people from grades 3 – 12 are invited to join.
No experience is necessary and there are no auditions. We re-
hearse on Sunday afternoons and sing during the 10:30am Ser-
vice several times a year. This is a wonderful opportunity for
children to become a part of our worship service while learning
how to use both the hymnal and the Book of Common Prayer.
They also learn how to play handbells and how to follow a musi-
cal part. As you are making plans for your children’s school year
activities, please think about including participation in the Junior
Choir. It can provide a real and lasting connection to our church.
If you have more questions, please call Jane Woody at 855-3884.
ALL-PARISH WORKDAYS
We will be holding our Autumn Work Days
on November 1st, November 15th and December
13th this year. This is your opportunity to pitch
in and help spruce up the St. Francis campus. We
will be clearing leaves, cleaning up the flower
beds and transplanting some border plants to
make everything look neater and more uniform.
Please bring pruning saws, leaf rakes, shovels,
trowels and work gloves if you have them. We'll
meet for a light breakfast and fellowship at 8:30,
work from 9:00 to 12:00 and break for lunch
THE VESTRY NOMINATING COMMITTEE

The Urban Ministry Food Bank needs our help! The Outreach Committee is requesting each of us
to bring non-perishable food items this Sunday to the Parish Hall Eucharist. We will have a
collection box in the courtyard. Financial donations are also appreciated. Please send donations
directly to Greensboro Urban Ministry Food Bank at 305 West Lee Street, Greensboro, NC

When St Francis has a death in its parish family, many special people step up to help in
this time of need. One of those groups on call is the Friends From St Francis. Working
closely with Father Michael, we can provide a visitation usually the night before a funeral,
provide house sitters and ushers during a funeral, plan and host a simple reception for the
family after the funeral, deliver a “We Care Basket”, stocked with items that can help
when the houseguests come, extend condolences with a note, and continue to be in touch
throughout the year.
How can you help? Be on call to provide cookies, help with a Reception or Visitation,
house sit, usher or deliver a basket. If you would like to be a part of this meaningful min-
istry, there is a place for you. Contact Carol Shearin at 288-9519
[email protected], Andrea Knupp at 282-1434 [email protected].

Michael has been in contact with the Diocese regarding the Assistant Rector position. A
search committee has been formed consisting of Jim Tanner, Claudia Reich, Kris Cooke, and
Susan Tysinger to support Michael in the discernment process of calling an Assistant
Priest. Paul Crowell has graciously agreed to help with services though September while we
are searching.
Day School enrollment has increased from last year and all are looking forward to a positive
year.
Bishop Suffragan Anne Hodges-Copple will be here on September 7th to preach and
celebrate at the 8:00am and 10:30am services. She will lead the Adult Forum and there will
be a reception in her honor after the 10:30am service. The Bishop will meet with the Vestry
following the reception for conversation.
The Parish Picnic will take place on September 14th after the 10:30am service. Will be fun
for kids and adults!!
