BLAKE MILLERHead Coach First SeasonUNC Pembroke, 2000

Blake Miller was named Virginia’s head softball coach in June 2013 after serving as the top assistant coach for Oregon for three seasons. Before his three campaigns with the Ducks, Miller had successful stints as the head coach of the Texas A&M-Kingsville and Darton College (Albany, Ga.) softball programs.

In his three seasons in Eugene, Ore., Milled helped lead the Ducks to three consecutive NCAA Super Regional appearances, including a 2012 trip to the Women’s College World Series. Oregon accumulated a record of 137-45 in Miller’s three seasons and went 50-11 on its way to the program’s first ever Pac-12 Championship in 2013. Miller worked primarily with the infielders and hitters at Oregon with the Ducks hitting .329 with 80 home runs and 374 runs scored (6.13 runs per game) last season.

In addition to his 13-year coaching career, Miller is a seven-time member of the USA Men’s National Team and helped Team USA capture gold at the 2002 Pan-American Qualifier in Guatemala City, Guatemala, and a silver medal at the 2003 Pan-American Games in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.

At Texas A&M-Kingsville, Miller led the Javelinas to a 32-22 record in 2009 and climbed as high as 23rd in the Division II national rankings after they won five games against teams ranked top-five nationally. In 2010, the Javelinas broke school records in batting (.306), slugging (.470), home runs (34) and on-base percentage (.385), while the 2008 squad paced the Lone Star Conference in stolen bases (88).

During his two-year stint at Darton College, he guided the Cavaliers to a 64-44 record, the school’s first Region XVII Championship, and a bid to the 2006 NJCAA Division I World Series. Darton shined off the field as well with a 3.26 team GPA his first season and an NJCAA national-high 3.59 mark the second campaign.

Before Darton, Miller spent time as an assistant coach at East Tennessee State, Missouri Western State and Mesa State.

Miller is a 2000 graduate of UNC Pembroke, where he was a four-year shortstop for the Braves. Miller earned his master’s degree in business from Mesa State in 2003.

Miller is married to the former all-conference pitcher Renee Hietbrink, and has three daughters, Ashley, Blakely and Carter.

HEIDI FREITAGER-KIRKALDYAssistant Head Coach Sixth SeasonNorthern Iowa, 2001

Heidi Freitager is in her sixth year at Virginia as an as-sistant softball coach.

At Virginia, Freitager is in charge of the pitching corps and also spearheads all recruiting efforts. She is instrumental in alumni outreach and works closely with the marketing and promotions and media relations staffs to positively promote the program.

Freitager guided pitcher Melanie Mitchell to one of the best pitching careers in UVa history. Mitchell Finished career as UVa all-time leader in wins (79), strike-outs (1,101), complete games (117), innings pitched (942), appearances (161) and starts (144). She earnedfirst-team all-region and first-team all-conference honors in 2010 and to the all-region first team in 2013.

Freitager arrived in Charlottesville after a one-year stint at Temple.Before her time in Philadelphia, she spent two years as the head coach at Everglades High School in Miramar, Fla. She led Everglades to the 2007 6A state championship while claiming two district titles. She also guided the West Pines Diamond Dust-ers 18 Gold squad during her time in Florida.

Prior to coaching in the high school ranks, Freitager served as an assistant at Nova Southeastern (2005), Morehead State (2004) and New Mexico State (2003). Freitager played at Northern Iowa (1997-2001) where she started at catcher for four seasons and led her team to the Missouri Valley Conference championship in 2000.

She graduated with a bachelor’s degree in science in 2001 and later went on to earn a master’s degree in sports administration from Morehead State in 2002. Freitager was inducted into the Irondale High School Athletics Hall of Fame in 2009.

JOE MORABITOAssistant Coach First SeasonThomas University (Ga.), 1999

Joe Morabito was named an assistant coach for the UVa softball program in July 2013. Morabito works primarily with the hitters and outfielders.

Morabito worked with the North Florida Community College softball team from 2000-07, serving as an assistant from 2000-03 and as head coach from 2004-07. He turned the Sentinel program around from a 13-37 season in 2001 to a 37-13 record the next year. NFCC went on to win the Panhandle Conference, Gulf Dis-trict and state titles and finished eighth in the NJCAA World Series in 2003.

During his tenure at NFCC, Morabito led nationally-ranked Sentinel squads to single-season school records in wins (47 in 2004), along with guiding the team to new offensive records, including home runs and runs scored.

After his time in Madison, Fla., Morabito served in the United States Navy from 2007-11, earning an U.S. Army Commendation Medal. Qualified in expedition-ary warfare, Morabito is an Operation Iraqi Freedom Veteran and served on task unit support for Seal Team 7.

The past two years, Morabito has served as the head baseball coach at Orange County High School.

Morabito graduated from Thomas University (Thomasville, Ga.) in 1999 with a degree in criminal justice. Morabito was a pitcher for the Nighthawks helped lead the team to its first national ranking and first regional bertg. He earned his master’s degree in education from Trident University International in 2012.

Morabito is married to the former Kelley Jenkins and the couple has a son, Nico.

Graduated as the school record holder with 27 home runs, 58 doubles, 158 RBI, 414 total bases and a .589 slugging percentage. She still holds the school records for doubles and slugging percentage.Dennis, who was also an outstanding pitcher, is the first UVa player to earn All-America honors twice, as she was a second-team selec-tion in both 2001 and 2002.
