Dear Parents:Summer can be a fun and exciting time for families. It’s also a

wonderful time for youth to participate in a program that

provides new experiences and reinforces skills they learned in

school to prevent losing them over the summer. Participating in

a summer program is about having fun and much more —

it helps prevent “summer learning loss” and keeps kids

engaged in positive ways. Parents, other family

members, and summer program staff all can play

important roles in ensuring students continue to

learn during the summer.

Finding an affordable summer program that

meets your needs, however, can be challenging.

We hope that this directory will help you make

plans. Many of the programs offer a combination of

activities designed to promote learning and youth

development. The directory lists a variety of camp, tutorial and

other summer programs that are available throughout Hartford

and the surrounding area. Programs for both youth and adults

with disabilities, as well as for senior citizens, are included.

Look through the directory and use the information to decide

what programs are best for your children, teens, elderly or other

family members. If there is a charge for the program, it is noted;

however, a number of programs are offered free, or at reduced

fees based on income. We recommend registering as early as

possible and checking with program staff about whether financial

aid is available.

Also, please be aware that a number of the day programs are

located in Hartford area schools. Be sure to check with staff to

confirm locations and schedules.

Youth not participating in HPS summerprograms may enroll in a full-day community program. For details on the Hartford Public Schools Early Start andother programs, please refer refer to the summary in thisdirectory. For additional details, visit the HPS website:www.hartfordschools.org.

You will need to be sure that theprograms you choose won’t conflict with summer schooldates and times, and to identify times during the summeryour children will be able to participate in additionalsummer programs.

If your child is required to attend summer school, findout in what school the sessions will take place, and checkthe program listings (or ask school staff) for summerprograms operating in or near the school that your childwill be attending, so that they can participate in programsafter summer school ends each day.

What should I know before I get started?

Dear Families,

Summer is an important time for families and keeping youth engaged. Many parents look forsummer programs that will engage their children in activities that reinforce what they learnedduring the school year, promote healthy development and allow them to have fun. We knowthat over the summer, math and reading skills learned during the year can fade if students arenot involved in interesting activities that reinforce those skills. The Hartford Foundation forPublic Giving works with agencies providing summer programs to help them develop strongprograms that meet the needs of the youth they serve, to connect parents to programs, andto keep program fees affordable. Our efforts include working with agencies to developstrategies to support busy parents in their efforts to encourage their children to read moreand to continue to develop their academic skills.

As the community foundation for the 29-town Greater Hartford region, the HartfordFoundation supports your efforts to engage your children and young teens in safe, educationaland enjoyable activities this summer. With Foundation support, this summer many programswill connect to fun activities in local libraries and the Connecticut Science Center thatpromote learning. We publish the Summer Programs Directory in partnership with theHartford Public Schools to provide information about summer school and other localprograms. These include programs for persons with special needs and for senior citizens.

The Hartford Foundation has invested in summer programs since the 1930s. This year, we areproviding nearly $800,000 in funding to more than 60 summer programs includingcampership programs to support free or reduced fees, and tutorial and counselor-in-trainingprograms throughout the region.

We understand that the cost of a summer program can be difficult, especially during tougheconomic times. Many of the summer programs listed in this directory are free or offerreduced fees, so we encourage parents to ask about financial assistance. We also invite parentsand other adults looking for support in developing their job skills and connecting to training oremployment to review the workforce development opportunities included in the back of thisdirectory.

We wish you and your family a safe and enjoyable summer.

Sincerely,

Linda J. KellyPresident
