Since its founding, Washburn University has been steered with deliberate intent and forethought. Our identity is certain. We are a public institution with a private feel. We are unwavering in our focus on students, small classes, incredibly high academic standards and professor-led courses from the first semester on.

Our first nearly 150 years have been spent honing Washburn’s identity, finances and potential. Now, we must move Washburn forward.

Through bold vision and leadership, 150 Forward: The Campaign for Washburn University will raise $100 million for four fundamental areas where Washburn is ready to dream bigger:

Students: $35 millionFaculty & Programs: $35 millionSpaces: $20 millionAnnual Giving: $10 million

In addition, Washburn University Foundation will raise $20 million for a new School of Law learning facility.

As of July 2014, donors have contributed more than $62 million to the campaign.

Washburn University Foundation HistoryThe Washburn University Foundation is an independent organization that exists to support and strengthen Washburn University through fundraising, fund investment and alumni records management.

Many generous donors have helped shape Washburn University’s history throughout the years. From the University’s inception as Lincoln College in 1865, the board of trustees made the development of a permanent endowment a priority to ensure the future of the college.

Ichabod Washburn, a businessman and church deacon, made the first sizable donation to the permanent endowment and, in honor of his gift, the University changed its name to Washburn College. Another significant contributor, Col. John Ritchie, donated the land on which Washburn sits today.

After Washburn became a municipal university in 1941, the board of trustees of Washburn College continued to manage the endowment, which at the time was approximately $1 million. The endowment became a separate entity in 1991 under the name Washburn Endowment Association.

In 2010, Washburn University Foundation became the new name of the fundraising arm of the University to more accurately reflect the scope of the organization’s work in supporting Washburn University.

In the fall of 2013, the Washburn Alumni Association joined with the Foundation to better serve and meet the needs of alumni throughout their lifetimes.

Actively increasing the endowment has always been critical for Washburn. These funds provide support for scholarships, outstanding faculty, program development and other University priorities.
