WBA is Looking To Fill Seats!

What’s not to love about Wymbolwood Beach? Why not take that warm, fuzzy feeling, and volunteer to join our friendly Board of Directors? Currently, we’re looking to fill seats for an Activity Camp Coordinator, and several others. Nominations and voting are held during the AGM on September 3rd . Check your yearbook, or contact any of the directors for more information.

!!!

No special skills required – just bring your energy and interest in keeping our beach community the special place it’s always been. Little time investment. Shoes are optional.

Return – priceless! !

Please note: Many activities, such as the WBA Activity Camp, will not be able to continue if we are not able to recruit new volunteers to lend a

hand.

2013 WBA AGM Minutes66TH ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING

10:00 A.M. SATURDAY, AUGIST 31, 2013 WYEVALE UNITED CHURCH HALL !

Minutes 1. Call to Order. Richard Merritt, president, acting as chairperson, called the meeting to order at 10:10 A.M. !2. Adoption of the Agenda

Richard previewed the meeting agenda and pointed out that copies of the financial statements, and the Minutes of 2012 AGM had been made available at the back of the room and are available on the WBA website. Richard called for a motion to approve the 2012 financial statements. Motion- Tom Dorman Seconded: Bruce Conron !

3. Review and Approval of the Minutes of 2012 AGM Richard called for a motion to approve the 2012 AGM minutes. Motion to approve: Bob McBride Seconded: Carolyn Neville !

4. Trophy Presentations Steve Himel presented results of Field day and Regatta. Both days went well Trophy changes for the future will be as follows: Junior trophy – Up to 10 years Senior trophy – 10 to 13 years old !! !

5. Committee Reports: !Yearbook by Steve Himel Editorial content and photos were up this year and much appreciated. The feedback on the yearbook has been good and Steve hopes to have even more user generated content in the coming years. Costs were in line with previous years and expectations are that they will remain so in the near future. Steve set up a drop box account for pictures to be loaded. Next year Steve hopes to include more user content. Steve was thanked for the great job on the year book. In the future, Steve is hoping to have themes in the yearbooks, such as wintering at the beach, animal encounters and poetry inspired by the beach.

Page !29

Page 30: 2014 WBA Yearbook Part 1 (pp 1-55)

Dave Sparrow and Blair Flemming did a great job in preparing the advertising material and it seems that revenue is up in that area. !Regatta by Steve Himel The regatta took place o the scheduled date under clear skies and pleasant temperatures. Attendance was up and approximately 100 people (kids and adults)were in attendance with approximately 50 kids participating. We again had access to the white surf thanks to MRS. Edwards and the sand was prepared by Don Craig. We thank them both very much. There were no water events again this year and the participants were mostly younger kids with parents. !Steve thanked all the volunteers and particularly Ursula Boylan who took care of the scoring and Mary-Ann Varelli who helped with set up and all of the events. !Field Day by Steve Himel The field day took place as scheduled with good attendance of around 100. In addition to the regular events, we re-introduced the nail hammer this year which seemed to be a success and we may look to add more of these type of events next year. In addition we timed the ‘Wymbolwood Mile’ this year and have ‘best-times’ in Junior, Senior and ‘Masters’ class. The best time for the 1.37 k/m course being 5:10 seconds by Jeff Fredricks. !Richard Merrit cooked hot dogs for all, which was appreciated. WBA 2013 Youth Activities Program – Final Report by Anne Hanson The 2013 Youth Activity Program this summer was an unqualified success! Abby Chrzan was this year’s new Senior Counselor, and brought with her several years experience from a Toronto-based summer soccer camp. Her early enthusiasm was evident as she jumped into the planning of activities and games from a list of fresh ideas. Amy McNamara returned for her second year as Assistant Counselor, and did a great job again this year! As always, the camp ran for two hours every morning during the seven-week period between July 8 and closing on August 23. Each of the seven weeks was organized around themes, which then provided the basis for crafts, stories, and games. Once again, we would like to extend a special thank you to Christa Nesbitt for her the time, thought, and organization she put into selecting craft materials, and sharing her ideas with Abby and Amy. This year, Christa was helped by her sister, Erin McCarthy, who will be taking a more active role in craft supply acquisition next summer. But in the meantime, thank you to Erin for all her help with this year’s camp.

Page !30

Page 31: 2014 WBA Yearbook Part 1 (pp 1-55)

Attendance at camp was up this summer, despite the fact that only 23 families participated versus 27 families the prior year. During July, an average of 16 children a day were at camp, with some days seeing as many as 21 or 22 children! Numbers dropped slightly in August, when an average of 9 children a day attended camp. There were only 3 days when camp was cancelled due to rain, leaving plenty of days for camp fun! Once again was an issue with a wasp nest in the camp shed, but Able Pest Control was called and it was dealt with quickly! Crafts were very popular this summer. But this activity worked best when there were fewer children at camp. It was more difficult for counselors to organize craft materials, provide instructions, hold the full attention of children, and be available for one-on-one assistance when there were 15 or more children at camp. Since there is no way of predicting attendance from day to day, counselors need to be flexible with planned schedules. Games, including dodge ball, soccer, broken telephone, obstacle courses, scavenger hunts, and insect- catching, were the popular choice for these busy days! Overall, this year’s camp ran smoothly and saw few obstacles. Recommendations for next summer include providing more seating at camp. At present, there is one picnic table available. This might comfortably seat 8 small children. High-attendance days meant there was not enough seating around the table for everyone during crafts. A second table would allow for more flexibility of activities, and inclusion of all children, at the same time, in the day’s craft. As well, while Activity Camp notice in the yearbook is helpful, there needs to be increased member communication about this program. There is still a level of confusion about who can attend camp, what the program has to offer, and whether camp is free to WBA members. Perhaps the one-page yearbook notice could also be printed separately, and distributed as a separate flyer (on brightly colored paper!) with the yearbook, to attract more attention. !Recommendations for Next Summer: !

1. Purchase a second picnic table for next year 2. Needs to be more communication about the program ie who can attend,

-add a separate flyer next year. Both counsellors are willing to come back next year. Richard indicated Anne would like some help with the Youth Program next year. !Book Swap – 4th, Sat July 13th. Anne Hanson reports: It was a disappointing turnout. Anne is wondering if the book swap is still a worthwhile activity. Bruce suggested a change of location. Steve Himel suggested attaching it to the field day.

Page !31

Page 32: 2014 WBA Yearbook Part 1 (pp 1-55)

Tennis – Tom Dorman reported it was a great season. More people used it. The tennis lock was not working at times. The tennis net ripped and needs repair. Richard will take net in for repairs. Tom repaired the fence by the ball park. The tennis court needs to be power washed in Spring. Someone should be hired to do this as we have no water or power at the court. It will make the court safer and it will last longer. !Corn Roast – Anne Campbell reported on behalf of Louise. Good turnout, considering the winter and cold. They perfected the set up. The corn comes from Walter Buis. The castle building went well. Richard Merritt and family will take this over next year. This event seems to be the one event where the most people come together. Around 200 people come out. Richard thanked the Sparrow family for their 5 years of contributing to the corn roast. Clarify in year book if the castle building is for children or adults. !Environment : Phragmites Removal - by Lynn Short. Lynn showed a Phragmites plant. They had a successful summer this year. This year They worked for 14 properties, clearing them of phragmites. Sometimes two crews were working on different properties. Some days there were 7 students. The crews worked for 25 days. The flower on the plant could be cut off, which would prevent the spread of the seeds. Lynn will be writing an article for Tiny Cottagers about Phragmites. Lake Huron is experiencing a lot of phragmites around the lake interfering with the wet lands and a lot of interested researchers are trying to find out what might help to eradicate this. The township doesn’t have a real solution. The township would be happy if others would remove this plant from township property.

Anne Campbell suggested that a paper notice be given to the neighbours of the properties that have had removal done, giving information about why this species should be removed.

Dead birds are appearing again on the beach. Richard Merritt: Water testing is done every other year. It will be done again next year. !Neighbourhood Watch – by Dave Sparrow –This year there have been no incidents of boat thefts. Blue boxes, green bins, and garbage cans left during the week on the roadside send a message that no one is home. Dave and other neighbourhood watch people bring these boxes up to the cottages if they are seen at the road side. Garbage –There are new vehicles picking up the garbage because the garbage has been contracted out and this has saved the township 2 million over the year. Septic – The township must determine an alternative to pumping septic (every 3 to 5 years) Lower water levels The excessive dredging of the St. Clair River is responsible.

Page !32

Page 33: 2014 WBA Yearbook Part 1 (pp 1-55)

Drinking water should be tested 2 or 3 times a year. !Richard thanked Dave for selling advertising for the year book. !

6. Summation of the 2012 Directors’ Meetings – Richard reported that we had no meetings this year as we were able to complete all business through a conference call and emails. !

7. Review of 2012 Financial Statements and 2013 Financial Report !Pat Dorman reports: Revenues are up, because advertising revenues were up. Membership numbers are the same. We sold more full memberships, and less associate memberships. Tennis memberships were the same as last year. Youth activity revenue comes mainly from donations. Expenses were up, and craft expenses were up. Counselors collected $2 per day for a non member. Interest revenue is up. Associating fees to FOTSA were down because we didn’t do water testing this year. Insurance stayed the same. Park expenses included spraying for the wasp nest. The year book expense was up significantly, back to what it was in 2011. The net income so far is $2,800 minus expenses which have yet to be tabulated. We have basically covered our spending, with no profit. Money for the tennis court is accrued for when we have major repairs for the tennis court. Pat will be retiring and has recruited Kathryn From to replace her. Richard thanked Bruce Conron for all his help over the years. Richard moved to appoint Kathryn From to the board. Motion: Bruce Conron Seconed: Dave Sparrow !

8. Appointment of Accountants – The accountants Review of Engagement will be switched to Notice to Reader, which will save the association money. It was recommended by the accountants. !

9. Retirement and Nomination of Directors Retiring: Pat Dorman, Bruce Conron, Ivanna Vipavec Pat will be retiring and has recruited Kathryn From to replace her. Richard thanked Bruce Conron for all his help over the years. Richard moved to appoint Kathryn From to the board. Motion: Bruce Conron Seconded: Dave Sparrow

Page !33

Page 34: 2014 WBA Yearbook Part 1 (pp 1-55)

10.New Business !Parking on Drurie Street –The township decided they needed a 6 metre allowance for emergency vehicles. This mandate came from the Fire Marshall, not the township. Therefore they posted a no parking zone by the ball park. We approached the township and asked about the change and what were the alternatives. We thought cars should be able to park on the one side adjacent to the park. Hank Loom, director of public works said they looked at it and they don’t think it is safe to allow any parking along there. Some complained it wasn’t safe to walk along Durie because cars were parked along both sides. We need to create our own parking on the park land. Richard called for volunteers to look at the alternatives to create parking. Tom Dorman suggested moving the fence by the oak tree to create 3 or 4 parking spots. Pat suggested we could budget money from next years tennis revenue to put up signs. Bob McBride, Lynn Short, and Pat Dorman will work with Tom to come up with a solution. !Township surveying: From Dunsford Lane to Stott Park for a 66 foot road allowance. There are quite a few Ghostman reserves. This is the largest of the Ghostman reserves. Dale Recchia presented the following information: Mrs. Edwards 542, 543, 544, 545 asked for absolute title to those lots. The Township objected. 616 to 420 was surveyed this summer. It is anticipated the Township will request the right to this property, superseding Quit Claims that some owners have. In the Quit Claim deed that Dale has, there is a schedule. A copy of Dale’s Quit Claim deed is in our WBA archives. The township has filed their objection but has not applied to the Ontario Supreme Court of Justice, yet. It is Crown Land, but the Township is claiming the land for a road/park. It is unclear why they are doing this. We need to look for a long term solution to this, as this issue keeps coming up. Tom Dorman suggested: 1. As an association we place an objection, write a formal objection. 2. Those with Quit Claims get together and decide on a course of action. Association

communicate to the membership that we take action. Alert all the land owners. We need a plan. We need to canvass our options. We need to get FOTSA on side. We can find out who the lawyers were for Round tree beach and ask for their advice. !

Land owners need to send a notice of objection to the township right away. !1. Ask the township in a formal letter for clarification of what this is about 2. Let cottage owners know they should send in an objection and ask for notification

of any further action.

Page !34

Page 35: 2014 WBA Yearbook Part 1 (pp 1-55)

1. Send a copy of the objection to the elected representatives. 2. An objection form any cottage owners would have to go to council and be

discussed. 3. Tom suggested if a lawyer could work with Richard to create a letter then we could

send out a mass mailing to all of our membership, including deadlines and dates. 4. Bob McBride suggested the owners may apply to the court for party status. 5. Paul Rosenburg will be the contact person. We need to correspond through emails.

Paul is willing to be present at the next Tiny Township meeting and make a deputation.

6. Find out when the next council meeting is. We should contact FOTSA about this. Motion: Mrs. From Seconded: Dale Recchia Sept 3 committee of adjustment Sept 9 Regular committee of the whole and regular council meeting 9 am to 8:30 pm 705-526-4202 . We should call and ask to be put on the agenda. !Richard will send a letter to our membership. Richard will send a formal objection to the Township. Richard will forward emails from members through his gmail to Raul Rosenburg. Dave Sparrow will get on the agenda of the Township meeting, to voice an objection and a request for information. ! FOTSA members (all of us get discounts) – cards were given out, one for every member. !

Let me paint a picture for you. You’re 15 yearsof age, and being told, school is essential and thatyou need a good job to succeed in life. At age 25,you are asked, ‘when are you going to get marriedand buy a house?’, soon followed by, ‘when areyou having children?’ For many, this is the directionyour life has taken.

Now imagine (or remember) yourself at age72, you’ve been working all of your life and arenow looking forward to retirement. Throughoutyour life, you’ve worked, got married, raisedthe kids, maintained your property: from cuttinggrass, cleaning windows, tending to the gardens, shoveling the driveway, grocery shopping, fixingbroken eaves trough and then live out your last daysalone, but you are still living in your house, that youworked so hard to have. Is this your image of whatyour retirement is or will be?

As I sit writing this and thinking about the good times to come in the summer of 2014, I am watching big, fat flakes of snow slowly drift down through a cold, windless sky. It would be very beautiful if it wasn’t April 15th!!! This time last year I was already getting ready for the summer. I fear that this year there still might be snow to shovel to get

in the front door. (And on May 2nd there was!)

The silver lining is that all the snow we’ve had this winter might mean higher water levels.

In any case, I know that come the first steamy, long July night, this day, and these mocking snowflakes, will melt into the haze of another perfect summer. Yea!!

This year’s book has lots of users contributions and two

new yearbook items - Wymbolwood reads (pg 54) and a back cover photo contest - I’m already looking forward to submissions. But that can wait until the fall.!

See you on the beach

May 4, 2014 !Dear friends and neighbours of Wymbolwood Beach, !Spring is off to a cool start this year, with many parts of the Great Lakes still containing ice. Let’s hope the experts are correct and a winter like the one we have just experienced helps to restore some of the recent drops in water levels. I am also hoping Spring finishes with an extended warm stretch so the lake warms up. !The WBA Board of Directors has been busy planning this season’s events. Please see the back cover for dates and details. !I hope you enjoy this year’s edition of the yearbook. Thank you to Steve Himel for putting it together. As you enjoy your time at the beach, please remember to send Steve any pictures you take. I would also like to acknowledge Dave Sparrow’s outstanding efforts in soliciting all the local businesses to get the advertising. Please support our advertisers and mention you saw their ad as, without them, this yearbook would not be possible. !As a board, we are excited to have new members working with us this year. If you are interested in getting involved, or becoming a director, please contact me or any of the other directors. We are always looking for new volunteers with new ideas to help with our initiatives. !My family and I look forward to seeing you on the beach. !Kindest regards, !

WBA Activity Camp If you’re a kid, one of the best things about being on Wymbolwood Beach has got to be the free morning Activity Camp. It’s one of the best ways to meet other kids from the beach, and every day offers up an exciting new mix of stories, games, and crafts. !This camp is open exclusively to all WBA members, and their guests. No registration is necessary. Simply show up at 10:00 a.m., sign in (first time only), and enjoy two hours of fun and games (or relaxation, if you’re the parent!). !Each summer, WBA staffs the camp with two experienced Activity Leaders, who are also first aid certified. This year, we are fortunate to have two returning Leaders – one for the second time, and the other for her third year. !Everything is provided for your child except for hats, sunscreen, and snacks. But please note that there are no washroom facilities available in the park. !And since the camp is free, and registration is not required, it is impossible to predict how many children will participate each day. Some days there might be two or three attendees, other days could see ten or more. For this reason, leaving a child at the WBA Activity Camp is solely at the discretion of the parent or caretaker. !The WBA Activity Camp is not intended to serve as a daycare or more formal daycamp, but rather as a no-charge, drop-in spot for children between the ages of 3 to 11. Parents are more than welcome to stay in the park for the duration of the morning’s program. !For more information, please feel free to contact any WBA directors.

Help Keep the WBA Activity Camp Alive!!!!!!!!For decades, children on Wymbolwood Beach have spent their mornings playing games, singing songs, and making crafts at the WBA Activity Camp.!!Many of you likely remember your own early experience at this!free, drop-in spot. It was a great place to meet other kids from Wymbolwood, and spend a few fun hours away from your (more boring) parents!!!In fact, the annual Activity Camp visit was so special that – according to our latest WBA survey - more than 50% of you believe that this is an important part of Wymbolwood Beach. And those of you who didn’t attend as youngsters, can spot a good thing when you see it!!!But we need help. Right now, the WBA Board of Directors is looking for someone to take responsibility for overseeing the Activity Camp. !!This post Involves hiring (or re-hiring) the two Activity Leaders, confirming craft supplies are ready to go (we currently have ‘craft volunteers’ who gather supplies in advance of the summer), checking in with the Activity Leaders occasionally, and being available – in person, or by phone – in case something goes wrong (which it rarely does!). At some point in the summer, you might take a few pictures for the yearbook.!!The person who has held this position for the past 5 years is ‘retiring’ at the end of this summer. If no one steps forward to take over, our WBA Activity Camp tradition will end. !!Training for this spot takes about 1/2 an hour, on a sunny day, and preferably over a glass (or two!) of wine. To ensure a smooth transition, this offer is good for anytime during July or August.!!If you are interested, please contact anyone on the WBA Board of Directors. Isn’t it time to get involved?

The Wymbolwood Beach Store in the 1950’s

The soda pop cooler is gone now, as are the Archie comic books and the infamous blackballs. But the memories have not faded. In the 50’s, the ‘four corners’ and the beach store were the hub of activity. This was where one could get the latest beach news and gossip. No matter when they wandered down to the store, people were bound to meet friends. !The Dunsford family owned ‘the four corners’ which included the lodge and cabins across from the store. Breakfast, lunch and dinner were served to the lodge guests with cottagers sometimes dining there on weekends and attending the costume dances on some Saturday evenings. Weekday mornings found moms running a children’s beach club in front of the lodge while other children took swimming lessons or played ball at Tuft’s Park. Boats were parked on the beach and gas containers were filled up at the BA pump outside the beach store.

!In those days as the long, hot summers unfolded, dads drove back to work on Sunday evenings and returned to the cottage late on Fridays, while many moms remained at the beach for the entire summer season. Without a second car, moms were wholly dependent on the beach store during the week. This was their ‘security’ as the store had a full line of staples. Daily, Mr. Dunsford delivered milk to the cottagers. Many owners did not have electric refrigerators; instead, they relied on huge chunks of ice that were delivered by a local resident. !The beach store had two entrance doors with the cash counter positioned in the centre; this allowed Mr. Dunsford to glance everywhere and watch everyone. Occasionally, he chased kids out of the store when they were caught ‘cheapreading’ the comic books. The pop cooler was along the wall with bottled pop floating in cold water and ice. By inserting

a coin in the dispenser, the pop bottles would slide along and release. Cream soda was a favourite. Newspapers were saved at the store for the cottagers and their names were carefully written on the corner of the front page. People eagerly walked to pick up their daily mail at the post office inside the store. !When a phone call for a cottager came through to the store, Mr. Dunsford would send someone to relay the message. And that was a ‘big deal!’ An antique wooden phone mounted on the wall in the back corner of the store was the only phone available for many cottagers. The caller would wind up the crank and wait for the operator to say, “Wyevale ring one, ring one.” !When he was 16, having completed grade eleven, Bill Pashby was employed by Mr. Dunsford for the whole summer. Because of his local job, his mom and younger brother and sister could stay up at the beach all summer. “I was just a kid up here. I earned $25 per week and worked 72 hours. I took time off from 10 am until noon to run the baseball program at the ball park. My beach friends worked in the city all week and partied throughout the weekend while I worked 9-9.” !“When I pumped BA gas I had a lot of trouble finding the gas tanks on the cars because in those days each car model had the gas tank cover in a different place. There was no wash basin to clean my hands so I moved directly from pumping gas to scooping ice cream cones for customers. Mr. Dunsford watched me count out the blackballs. My favourite treats were Virginia bars and Wilson’s Cola.”

!48

Page 49: 2014 WBA Yearbook Part 1 (pp 1-55)

“Everyone would come in for their mail and that’s how I learned the names of every teen-aged girl on the beach. Customers were good to me; they invited me to waterski on my time off. There was no automatic cash register so I had to do the math in my head. I had to charge for paper bags because they were expensive and Mr. Dunsford didn’t like to hand them out.” !And then there was candy. Clearly the beach store was ‘the draw.’ Bound by their affection for sweets, children made countless happy visits—often barefoot, leaving footprints in the warm soft road tar as they descended upon the store. Their sole purpose was to get their daily quota of candy. The focus for many was the infamous blackball (the size of a marble). In those days children could purchase three blackballs for a penny. It took a long time for the blackball to dissolve into a tiny seed in their mouths. During the process children would open their mouths and compare the colour of their diminished blackballs with their friends. Then they would use their t-shirts to wipe the black residue off their faces. !Others preferred the licorice pipes lined with red sprinkles on the top of the bowl to simulate the glow of a lit pipe. And still others eagerly looked forward to Virginia Bars, Sweet Marie Chocolate Bars and Crispy Crunch. In fact, one parent regularly

purchased a box of Sweet Maries for his family. Candy cigarettes were another favourite. Wrapped in

white paper, these sugary sticks resembled the real thing. Children would wrap their fingers around the cigarettes and puff away to mimic smokers. Another popular choice were Pixy Stix—sweet and sour powder packaged in what looked like a drinking straw. Children would bend their heads far back and pour the powdered candy into their mouths. !Times are different now. Although sandcastles, skinny dips and long walks on the beach are still treasured, double income families are the norm, and as a consequence families rarely spend the whole summer at the beach. While flip flops are still flip flops and burgers and hot dogs are still grilled, dogs no longer run free on the beach and sunscreen has replaced baby oil (one cottager used to add iodine to the baby oil to ensure that her skin turned brown!). Large awning tents and beach umbrellas line the shore. People stroll along the water’s edge while they check their cells, text their friends and listen to

their iPods. Adults lounge on their deck chairs, sometimes with laptops balanced on their knees. This has therefore changed the landscape of the beach, and of the beach store. !The 50’s were special days for many cottagers. They were happy days; carefree and full of fun. The beach store has survived many owners since the Dunsford days, but it holds wonderful memories cherished by many cottagers. Merv Jessop summed it up, “These were memories of golden times.”

WYMBOLWOOD READS! !This is a new WBA initiative that we hope will appeal to all avid Wymbolwood Beach readers. !The idea is to have each of you nominate the one book you believe that everyone on the beach should be reading. Each year, the nominated books will fall under a theme, previously announced in the yearbook. !

The theme for summer 2015 is ‘The Book That Wouldn’t Allow Me To Leave The Beach Chair’. What is the one book you’ve read that - quite literally - you couldn’t put down? !This is an opportunity to share your enthusiasm for a particular author, classic or contemporary, favouring us with a sketch of an old family favourite, or introducing a work from an otherwise unknown writer. The only criterion for this first year is that it be fiction. The literary genre is up to you. How enticingly you describe your nominated title will determine how well positioned you will be to become the ‘winner’ of Wymbolwood Reads!. !It’s summertime and the reading is easy. Here’s how Wymbolwood Reads! works: Between now and the end of 2014: !1. Start thinking about and reading ‘the book’ that will most likely keep

us out in the sun (perhaps more than is healthy?), and mightily entertained.

2. Be its publicist: Compose a blurb of about 200 words or less that will convince us to read your nominated book (the one below is a tad long, but it’s for illustrative purposes only).

3. Submit your nomination: preferably by email, to editor Steve Himel ([email protected]). Steve will post it on wymbolwood.ca upon receipt, so that everyone can experience your enthusiasm online. !!

After the closing date for nominations (December 31, 2014), a committee of the directors will judge the merits of your choice among all the others. The winner of Wymbolwood Reads! 2014 will be announced in the 2015 yearbook, along with the publication of all the nominations. If this is successful, we’ll do it all again the following year.

Any questions or suggestions as we go? Please contact the co-convenors of Wymbolwood Reads!, either Bruce Conron ([email protected] or Anne Hanson ([email protected]).

Page 53: 2014 WBA Yearbook Part 1 (pp 1-55)

To kick off this summer of reading on Wymbolwood, Bruce has prepared the following read as a ‘sample’ nomination: !!Orr: My Story by Bobby Orr (Viking, 2013) is this iconic NHL defenceman’s account of life as an ordinary superstar. Self-effacing and shy to a degree unusual for one perennially in the spotlight 36 years after his abbreviated playing career, Orr early on says “I am no different from anyone else.” Not wanting to go on about his natural ability and narrate all his greatest moments on the ice, his intent here is to tell us about

how the times and the people in his life helped him to achieve greatness. His values, his inspiration, and above all, his passion for hockey are engagingly and convincingly described and attributed to his parents, his coaches (I even forgive his veneration of Don Cherry), teammates like Johnny Bucyk and Eddie Johnston, and opponents (notably Gordie Howe), and his fans in the Boston Garden. It is significant that he devotes the first two chapters to growing up in Parry Sound of the ‘50s (his pond hockey was on the bay) and the formative influence of his parents. There is an abundance of photos, many of them from the family album, and before and after x-rays of his knee replacement surgery. Reflecting on the relative commitment to consistent performance in regard to players of his era and the present, Orr remarks that “I do sometimes wonder whether, overall, there is the same urgency in the game that there used to be. Understand one thing: the amount athletes make today doesn’t bother me in the least. What concerns me is whether they earn it every night.” I think back to the current Maple

Leafs and their slides of March. !!Wymbolwood Reads! committee

The beaches of Tiny Township are dynamic ecosystems constantly changing with the shifting sands. The beautiful sand on the beach was formed during the last Ice Age about 10,000 years ago by the grinding action of the massive glaciers that flowed over the exposed bedrock. A natural ecosystem of native plants and animals has evolved over thousands of years to be well adapted to live in harmony on the beach. The native plants are delicate and beautiful and each has a role to play in the ecosystem. !Under normal circumstances, fluctuating water levels are a natural and healthy phenomenon. When the water level is low, there are several species of native plants that thrive in the sand. These native plants hold the sand in place so that it does not blow away from the beach up into the sand dunes. By absorbing excess nutrients and minerals, the

native plants growing in the sand also clean surface water run-off as it flows back through the sand into the lake. When the water level is high, the plants don’t grow. However, the plant

seeds remain alive submerged buried in the sand for several years so that the plants naturally regenerate when the water level goes down again. !In recent years, the persistent unnaturally low water levels caused by the unmitigated dredging of the St. Clair River have upset the balance and promoted the spread of an unwelcome non-native species of plant. Phragmites or Common Reed is a serious problem in wetlands all around the Great Lakes including Wymbolwood Beach. This particularly aggressive plant is able to out-

compete the native plant species that belong on the beach and crowd them out completely. This is not good. !As beach owners and custodians of the natural beach ecosystem, we are challenged to respond to this situation. It is now widely recognized that the best way to get rid of this plant in a situation such as we have in Tiny is to selectively and persistently remove the green part of the Phragmites plant above ground so that its root system is starved and eventually dies. Cutting the plant with a spade works well and should be done while taking care not to disturb the native plant species. !The Wymbolwood Beach Association has been a leader in support of this approach. Other beaches are beginning to adopt the same methods. After several years of persistence, the environmental restoration efforts along our beach are showing great progress.

Phragmites

!54

Page 55: 2014 WBA Yearbook Part 1 (pp 1-55)

Many beach property owners have been able to keep the plant under control on their own properties. Others have chosen to avail themselves of the valuable cost effective service provided by a group of dedicated Wymbolwood Beach teenagers. Last summer, twelve students worked a total of 25 days between July 5 and August 9 and together accumulated 233.5 student working hours. Together they cleared an amazing 14 beach properties of Phragmites!

!A few beach residents have been persuaded that ploughing the beach is an effective approach. Unfortunately, this is not the

case. This practice not only removes Phragmites, but the native plants as well. The beach sand is exposed to wind erosion and the rain water goes directly into the lake without first being filtered by the plant ecosystems. Ploughing breaks up the root systems and loosens the sand

making it easy for the remaining Phragmites fragments to regenerate and rapidly multiply. The native plants have a much more difficult time regenerating in the ploughed areas. As we have seen repeatedly, rather than controlling Phragmites, the ploughing approach actually helps it out-compete the native plant species.

!As responsible stewards of our

beach, let’s all support the native plant growth and preserve a healthy beach ecosystem as a legacy for our grandchildren. !Lynn Short
