About Carson-Newman

7

Allen Morgan begins his fourth year as Carson-Newman’s Director of Athletics. He was named to the position on March 12, 2012, and officially began his duties May 1, 2012.

Carson-Newman saw a trio of teams earn SAC titles while eight clubs went on to

NCAA tournament play in Morgan’s third year at Mossy Creek. Softball won its first outright title since 2005 and its 14th overall while the men’s basketball program earned its first ever back-to-back NCAA tournament bids with a SAC tournament title win over #3 LMU. Volleyball, women’s basketball, men’s and women’s swimming and outdoor and indoor track and field to go along with softball all made postseason play.

Year two saw Carson-Newman make four appearances in NCAA postseason events (football, men’s basketball, men’s golf and men’s soccer’s run to the national title game). Morgan also hired a new men’s golf coach in Randy Wylie. Wylie’s first tournament was the 2014 SAC Championship. He only guided C-N to its first conference title in a decade.

In his first year on the job, Morgan oversaw the start of Carson-Newman’s swimming program. He also hired a former LPGA player in Suzanne Strudwick to helm the women’s golf program and a two-time Olympian in Tony Parrilla to coach cross coun-try and assist with track and field.

Morgan replaced David Barger, now Athletics Director Emeritus, who spent 32 years at Carson-Newman.

A 1968 C-N alumnus and trustee, Morgan retired from a long career in education, culminating in his service as superintendent of Knox County Schools from 1992-98. The system’s last elected superintendent (1992), he oversaw its transition to an appointed position when the Board of Education hired him to continue the job in 1996. He oversaw more than 50,000 students and some 7000 employees at 91 schools, and was selected Superintendent of the Year in 1997 by Tennessee’s State PTA.

Morgan’s 22 years of public school administration included three years as assistant principal of Karns High School and 13 years as principal of Powell High School. His commitment to professional excellence and student growth led Powell to be the first Knox County School named “BEST” by the Greater Knoxville Chamber of Commerce; it was one of just four Tennessee high schools to be named a finalist in the National Schools Recognition Program (1990-91). Beyond academic excellence, he led PHS through an extensive renovation program during his tenure.

Upon his retirement from Knox County, the 1964 Carter High School graduate joined Clayton Homes as president of CMH Parks, its communities and subdivision group. In that capacity for a decade, he directed the efforts of almost 300 employees and led the development of some 22,000 homes in communities across the country.

Morgan entered C-N in the fall of 1964 as a freshman baseball player and was part of the team that won the 1965 NAIA National Championship, the institution’s first athletic national title. He coached baseball at Powell before taking the school’s helm as principal.

C-N’s new AD is married to Phyllis Mitchell Morgan, who retired after 30 years as an elementary school teacher. The Morgans are active members of Knoxville’s Wallace Memorial Baptist Church. Their son Chris, a 1997 C-N grad, and his wife Melanie live in Georgia, where he is senior pastor of First Baptist Church, Chickamauga.

Top Flight Facilities

Carson-Newman’s men’s basketball pro-gram has first class facilities for its student athletes to use - including a freshly remod-eled locker room.

Crews transformed what was a three room area into one large open space replete with hand-crafted lockers, three leather couches and multiple plasma screen TVs. The locker room opens on an Eagle mural that greets visitors head on. A cut into an alcove and past pictures of all the Eagles’ returning letter winners and the room opens into a vast space capable of containing even the largest post player. To the left is a fridge stocked with sports drinks and chocolate milk. To the right, the lockers – built from a dark cherry – with a personalized masthead for each player above their personal belongings. At the very back of the room is the players’ lounge, with leather couches, a pair of flat screens and a customized white board for Benson to diagram plays.

Gloria Walker is in her third year as an academic suc-cess coach. Walker works closely with provost Paul Percy, athletic director Allen Morgan and the Life Directions Center to ensure the success of student athletes in the classroom.

A native of Florida, Walker graduated from the University of Memphis with a bachelor of science in education with an emphasis in health, physical education, recreation and dance. She played collegiate basketball and volleyball at the University of North Alabama.

Walker has taught physical education and wellness for 13 years and coached high school girls basketball for four years.

She has raised three chil-dren, all of whom have participated or are participating in collegiate athletics.

Her son Darrion is a cheer and dance coach in Memphis, Tenn. Chris is a former defensive end for the University of Tennessee, while Briana graduated with a degree in psy-chology after playing basketball at Georgia Southwestern State University.

Walker has offices in the Baker Building in the Life Di-rections Center and in the Ken Sparks Athletic Complex. Students can contact her by email at [email protected].

She helped found the Eagle Scholars program, which is dedicated to recognizing academic achievements among Carson-Newman student-athletes. Carson-Newman is the only school in the South Atlantic Conference (SAC) to have such a program.

Following an inaugural membership of 72, the program last year honored 93 students during its ceremony as qualified Eagle Scholars. Membership in the program in-creased 29 percent from year one to year two, and 38.7 percent from year two to year three. Overall, it’s a 72.1 percent increase in the program from its inaugural year to now.

Along with being honored at the ceremony, Eagle Scholars also receive a patch to wear on their uniforms during the regular season competition.

Through Walker’s leadership, not only has the number of student athletes with GPAs higher than a 3.25 skyrocket-ed, but the number of student athletes on academic probation has plummeted. Two years ago, 44 student ath-letes were on academic probation. Now that number is six.

My time spent advising men’s basketball is very rewarding,” Walker said. “I always have the full support of coach Benson and his staff as they make academic success a priority.”

Chuck BensonHead CoachSixth YearCarson-Newman, 1991

Chuck Benson enters his sixth season as head coach of the Carson-Newman program and ninth season overall in Mossy Creek.

Benson, a 1991 graduate of C-N, spent four seasons as associate head coach of the Ea-gles before being named head coach.

Year five was unprecedented for Benson. The Eagles' head man guided Carson-Newman to its first back-to-back NCAA tournament appearances on the strength of the Eagles' first SAC tournament title run since 2001-02.

Along the way, Carson-Newman crushed Lincoln Memorial on two occasions. One, when the then-number one ranked team in DIvision II LMU Railsplitters were riding a 20-game win streak, the Eagles handed LMU its first loss of the season on the Railsplitters' home court with a 77-62 victory. Then again, Carson-Newman lambasted LMU 63-48 in the SAC title game when the Railsplitters were ranked number three in the country. In the SAC title game, the Railsplitters' 48 points were the fewest allowed in SAC title game history while the Eagles' +20 rebound-ing margin was the second largest in title game history.

Carson Brooks became the third Eagle under Benson to earn all-region honors while Charles Clark became the first C-N player to earn All-Freshman team honors

from the SAC since 2010-11.

In his fourth season at the Creek, Benson took Carson-Newman back to the promised land. The Eagles went to their first NCAA tournament in 12 years and their first in program history by virtue of an at-large bid. Utilizing a suffocating zone de-fense, the Eagles took home victories over a top 10 Lincoln Memorial club and had wins over teams from Anderson, Wingate and Barton who all received votes in the NABC top 25 at various points during the season.

The Eagles spent five weeks ranked in the NCAA Division II top 25 during the 2013-14 season, the most for Carson-Newman in the program's history in Division II. In fact, Carson-Newman has been ranked in the NABC top 25 just five weeks total outside of the 2013-14 season.

C-N was led by all-region performers Antoine Davis and Ish Sanders who both finished in the top 10 in scoring in program his-tory. Davis concluded his career with 1,526 and Sanders with 1,922 points. Sanders is the program and conference's leader all-time leader in made threes with 343 treys. Benson also hit a personal milestone, collecting his 200th career victory with a win over Anderson.

Benson has coached six individuals who have earned either preseason or postseason All-America accolades. Davis and Sand-ers earned such honors at Carson-Newman; Ed Perkins, Desmond Allison, Johnny Goodman and Marcus McNair picked up the accolades for Benson at Martin Methodist.

In 2012-13, Benson earned SAC coach of the year honors after guiding C-N to a 12-6 mark in conference play and a 20-8 mark overall in year three. The 12 conference wins are Carson-Newman's most since 2001-2002 when it went to the NCAA tournament. Meanwhile, it was C-N's first 20-win season since to 2002-2003 year.

The 2012-13 campaign was one of many firsts for Benson. The Eagles had their longest win streak to start a season (five games) since the 1997-1998 season. It was tied for the third best start in school history.

Benson also helped coach two remarkable seasons by C-N stars Antoine Davis and Ish Sanders. Davis earned SAC player of the year honors as well as All-America honors from D-II Bulletin. Davis lead the South Atlantic Conference in scoring (19.0 points per game) and made field goals (170). A two-time South Atlantic Conference player of the week award winner, Davis became the first C-N player since 2003-2004 with multiple 30-point games in a single season.

Davis and Sanders were both preseason and postseason first team All-SAC selections. A SAC Player of the Week award win-ner, Sanders turned in four consecutive 25-point performances, the longest such streak at Carson-Newman this century. He was one of three SAC players with consecutive 25-point performances, but the only player who has gone beyond two.

Sanders set a season high with 33 points in a home win against then league-leading Anderson. The shooting guard went 11-for-22 from the field and 9-for-18 from three in that game. It was the fourth most threes in a single game in SAC history. In that contest, Sanders set Carson-Newman’s single season record for three pointers made - the previous record was 86, Sanders finished the year with 99.

In year two for Benson, the Eagles finished 15-14 overall and 8-10 in the SAC. The 2011-2012 campaigned was highlighted by a sweep of archrival and nationally ranked Lincoln Memorial. Benson's Eagles knocked the fifth-ranked Railsplitters down on the road 64-61 - ending a 30-game home winning streak for LMU - on Jan. 25 before coming back to Holt Fieldhouse and turning the trick again with a 77-69 victory on senior day. The Eagles also ended a near decade long home losing streak to Tusculum, beating the Pioneers 78-64 before nearly 900 fans at Holt Fieldhouse.

Under Benson's tutelage, sophomore stars Antoine Davis and Ish Sanders each finished the year as second team All-SAC per-formers. Sanders locked down a SAC Player of the Week honor for the week of Dec. 12 after leading the Eagles to wins over Tennessee Wesleyan and Lees-McRae. Sanders averaged 19.5 points and 5.5 rebounds while shooting an efficient 50-percent from the field. He also had an assist-to-turnover ratio of nearly 3-to-1.

Davis and Sanders both finished their junior seasons with 487 points each. Benson's Eagles finished the year ranked in the top 30 nationally in three pointers made per game with 8.2, while Sanders ranked 34th in the nation and third in the SAC for the stat. The Eagles also took care of the ball, while forcing turnovers as well. Carson-Newman ranked second in the SAC in turnover margin for Benson's second year.

The Eagles came on strong at the end of Benson's first season in 2010-11. After entering Christmas break with a 3-7 record, C-N turned things around to go 8-8 down the stretch, including five straight road wins. The Eagles turned heads by finishing the regular season in a tie for fourth in the conference standings with an 8-10 mark after being picked ninth in the preseason poll. C-N's season came to an end with a first round loss to No. 13 Lincoln Memorial in the South Atlantic Conference tournament, finishing the year at 11-16 overall.

C-N turned in several memorable moments during Benson's first year at the helm. The Eagles claimed quality road wins at Anderson, an Elite Eight participant, and Brevard, the defending conference champion. The Eagles also defeated rival Maryville College for the first time since 2006. Freshman guard Ishmael Sanders thrived leading the team in scoring as he set a confer-ence record with 51 points against Mars Hill and broke a school record by making 11 3-pointers against the Lions. Guard Brad-ley Tumer also broke the conference's single game record for assists with 19 against Newberry. Sanders and guard Antonio Sullivan each earned SAC Player of the Week honors, while Sanders was named to the SAC All-Freshman team. As a team, the Eagles proved to be one of the top defensive squads in the SAC as they finished the year as the league leader in 3-point field goal percentage defense (.322) and third in field goal percentage defense (.428).

Academically at Carson-Newman, Benson has seen 88 percent of players who have played out their eligibility graduate and get a degree in five years or less.

Benson's two-decade career in the col-legiate ranks extends much further than Mossy Creek, including five seasons in the Southeastern Conference at the University of Tennessee, as well as building Martin Methodist College into a national contend-er in his seven seasons as head coach at the NAIA Division I institution.

Prior to joining the Carson-Newman staff in 2006, Benson was an assistant at Tennessee from 2003-05 after Vols head coach Buzz Peterson hired him to help bolster recruiting efforts. Tennessee earned a National Invitational Tourna-ment bid for the 2003-04 season.

Benson joined Bobby Lutz' staff at UNC-Charlotte for the 2005-06 season. The 49ers were in the preseason Top 25 and earned an NIT bid during his one season as an assistant.

In April of 2006, Benson accepted a position at UNC-Wilmington and served as an assistant there until he received the call from Eagles head coach Dale Clayton in August of 2006 with the opportunity to come back to Carson-Newman.

Benson brings a wealth of coaching experience to the Eagles, including a seven-year stint (1996-2003) as head coach at Mar-tin Methodist College in Pulaski, Tenn. The RedHawks were a part of a strong Transouth Athletic Conference, which included three schools (Belmont, Birmingham Southern and Lipscomb) that would eventually become NCAA Division I programs.

During his time in Pulaski, Benson led the RedHawks program to unprecedented heights, compiling a 137-95 record. Martin Methodist averaged 20 wins a year over his last six seasons and was listed in the NAIA national rankings for 40 weeks from 1999-2003, including a No. 4 ranking in December of 2002. Benson guided the RedHawks to three consecutive NAIA National Tournament berths from 2001-03, including back-to-back appearances in the Sweet 16 in 2001 and 2002.

Four Martin Methodist players earned NAIA All-America honors during Benson's tenure, which was a first for the small rural institution with less than 500 students enrolled. Off the floor, 16 men's basketball players graduated from Martin Methodist with Benson at the helm. He also implemented the NAIA's "Champions of Character" initiative as a way to emphasize charac-ter both on and off the court to his student-athletes. Aware of his responsibility to the institution as a whole, Benson served on one SACS accreditation committee and was a member of the Vice President for Academic Affairs selection committee.

Prior to his start in the collegiate ranks, Benson created the Tennessee Travelers summer basketball program in 1987 and coached within the organization during his college years. Benson spent the 1990-91 season as the head boys' basketball coach at Morristown Covenant Academy in Morristown, Tenn. The team advanced to the championship game in the TANAS State Tournament while compiling an 18-10 overall record.

Starting in the fall of 1991, Benson spent time on staff at Lincoln Memorial University (1991-92), Carson-Newman (1992-93), and Tennessee (1993-96). While at Tennessee, Benson was a part of a National Invitational Tournament appearance (1995-96) and helped produce two top 20 recruiting classes.

A native of Newport, Tenn., Benson graduated from Cocke County High School in 1987 and earned a B.A. degree in History from Carson-Newman in 1991. He earned a Master's degree in Educational Curriculum and Instruction from Lincoln Memorial University in 1996. Benson and his wife Tabbatha reside in Jefferson City. They have one daughter, Abby and one son, Jake, with another son, Cooper, who arrived just before the season began.

Shane Williams enters his sixth season as an assistant coach with the Eagles.

Williams, who played at the University of Tennessee from 1994-96, came to Mossy Creek after spending the four seasons as an assistant on the King College staff in Bristol, Tenn.

Williams has been instrumental in the tutelage of of a pair of All-Americans in Antoine Davis and Ish Sanders. The duo goes down as the two top scorers for Carson-Newman in the Division II era.

In 2014-15 Williams helped develop post player Carson Brooks into an all-region performer.

He is also credited with helping C-N head coach Chuck Benson develop the Eagles’ swarm-ing, amoeba-like matchup zone defense.

Williams and Eagles head coach Chuck Benson are no strangers to each other. In high school, Williams played four years for the Tennessee Travelers, an AAU program that Ben-son was instrumental in starting.

Benson also recruited Williams to Tennessee in 1993 when he was a part of Kevin O’Neill’s staff and was an assistant with the Vols during Williams’ playing career.

Williams later coached on Benson’s staff at Martin Methodist from 2000-01 and helped the RedHawks receive their first NAIA National Tournament berth that season.

Prior to joining the Eagles staff, Williams helped lead King College to a 97-33 record from 2006-10 and four national tournament appear-ances (three NAIA, one NCCAA). Last season, King went 24-6 and advanced to the NCCAA national title game, where it fell to Northwestern, 58-54.

Williams has also been on a staff at the NCAA Division I level as he was a graduate assistant under Kevin O’Neill at Tennessee from 1997-98.

Williams’ coaching experience extends further than just the collegiate level. During the 2005-06 season, he was the head eighth grade coach at Science Hill and led the Hilltoppers to an undefeated record.

From 2004-05, he was an assistant coach at Heritage High School in Maryville, Tenn., where he helped turn around the Mountaineers program. Heritage, which won just four games the season before Williams joined the staff, compiled 17 wins and earned a region tournament berth in his first year.

Williams, a native of Johnson City, Tenn., is a 1992 graduate of Science Hill High School. He guided the Hilltoppers to the 1990 TSSAA state title and a runner-up finish in 1991. He was a three-time all-state selection, the Upper East Tennessee Player of the Year during his junior and senior seasons and was Sci-ence Hill’s all-time leading scorer when he graduated.

Upon graduation from Science Hill, Williams went on to play two seasons at Northeast Oklahoma A&M College, where he was a two-year starter. He led Northeast Oklahoma to a No. 1 ranking, was a two-time all-conference selection and led the team in assists both seasons.

Williams then transferred to Tennessee prior to the 1994-95 season. He started at point guard for the Vols for the next two seasons and won the Southeastern Conference Ironman Award for playing the most minutes in the league. His single season mark of 38.3 minutes per game and career average of 37.7 minutes per game are still Tennessee records. During his senior campaign, Williams guided the Vols to a Nation-al Invitational Tournament appearance.

Williams resides in Jefferson City.

Ray Likely is in his second season as an assistant coach at Carson-Newman.

Likely finished his four-year career for the Eagles with 175 career points and 137 rebounds as one of C-N's more reliable role players in 2014.

"It was obvious to me over the last couple years that Ray had a great feel for the game," Carson-Newman head coach Chuck Benson said. "He took on a role that enabled him to look at things from a coach's perspective and he embraced that role. When I finally approached him about becoming a coach, he decided he wanted to go down this path to see if col-lege coaching is his place in the world."

That role has enable Likely to make coaching decisions when he was a player at C-N. It was Likely who called the play that helped the Eagles defeat Newberry

in 2013 at Eleazer Arena in overtime 89-83. With 14 seconds left, the Eagles got the ball into the high post to Cody Henegar (South Pittsburg, Tenn.). A bounce down to the right block found a cutting Collin Crane (Knoxville, Tenn.) wide open from point blank range to tie the game at 71.

Likely is heavily involved with scouting and film breakdown. His primary responsibili-ty is recruiting.

Eagle fans can follow Likely on Twitter @coachlikelycnu.

Coach Gorman’s coaching career began at Melrose High School in Melrose, MA, where he was the head junior varsity and assistant varsity boys’ basketball coach from 1992-1997. During his time at Melrose High School, the varsity squad qual-ified for the state tournament five consecutive years, won a close to 75% of its games, and was sectional finalists in 1996.

Coach Gorman’s other coaching experiences include serving as the head junior varsity/assistant varsity basketball coach and head track coach at Dundalk High

School in Baltimore, MD., and assistant football coach at Northwestern High School in Baltimore, MD.

In addition to his coaching experience, Coach Gorman was a high school referee at the varsity level in football, baseball, and soccer for over a decade and was a member of the Eastern New England Football Association, Eastern New England Baseball Umpires Association, and the Eastern Massachusetts Soccer Officials Associations.

2014-15: A South Atlantic Conference All-Freshman team selection and the MVP of the South Atlantic Conference Tournament. Clark scored 23 points and snaggied nine boards to send the Eagles past LMU and on to the SAC tournament title. Clark scored 74 points in the tournament, nine away from Anderson's Denzail Jones and the tournament record. He set his career high in the semis against Newberry with 33 points on 10-for-16 shooting. Clark finished the year second on the team in scoring and second in the SAC among freshmen. He averaged 12.6 points per game coupled with 3.7 rebounds per contest. Clarked played in 32 games and started 23, in-cluding 15 consecutive to end the season. Clark scored double digits in 16 games and 20 or more in eight. His arguably most impressive game came when he led the Eagles to an 87-72 win at No. 1 Lincoln Memorial. That night he had 30 points on 11-for-17 shooting. He earned South Atlantic Conference player of the week honors for that performance and became the first freshman with a 30-point game for Carson-Newman since Ish Sanders set a then SAC and still school record with 51 points against Mars Hill in 2011. At the start of the season, Clark struggled from beyond the arc, shooting 27 percent from three following the Johnson C. Smith game. He has successful-ly added a deep ball to his arsenal since Christmas and has connect-ed on 23-of-56 threes in the second semester, a 50 percent clip. He had his first career double-double with 21 points and 11 rebounds against Brevard in Holt Fieldhouse. Clark has led C-N in scoring eight times, including five in a row to close the season, rebounding four times and assists on seven occasions. The SAC's third best thief, Clark has forced 51 steals this season and has led C-N for the stat 15 times, including a career best five swipes at Tusculum. He dished out six assists at home against Anderson for his season high there.

High School: A 6-2 guard out of Siegel High School who was coached by Ben Dotson. While with the Stars, Clark scored 1,510 points in his high school career en route to a McDonald's All-Amer-ican nomination. His senior year, Clark averaged 17.9 points and 5.2 rebounds per game. He was a three-time All-District 7-AAA and All-Region 4-AAA selection. He earned all-state honors his senior season and all-state tournament honors his junior year. He was a high school teammate of Ryan Jones. The duo helped the Stars to a final four appearance when they were juniors. Jones and Clark guided Siegel to the Elite Eight as seniors

Personal: Clark is the son of Sarah Clark. He is undecided on a major at C-N. His nickname is Bird.

He scored double figures in 24 contests this season including 16 consecutive at one point – the longest double-digit scoring stream since Sanders collected 15 consecutive double-digit games his senior year. Brooks reset his career high with 28 points against Queens. For the first time in his career, he dished out five assists in a game, doing so both against Queens at home and Newberry at home. He had six, 20-point games this season, including three consecutive against Tusculum, Newberry and Anderson (that streak matches streaks of Davis and Sanders from their senior seasons for the longest 20-point scoring streaks for C-N under Benson). Brooks put down his second career double-double with 23 points and 10 boards against Tusculum at home before doing it again four games later with 20 points and 11 rebounds in the Eagles' win over top-ranked LMU in Harrogate. He reached a nadir in the SAC tournament to earn all-tournament team honors. Brooks had double-doubles against both Coker in the quarterfinals and against Lincoln Me-morial in the Eagles' SAC tournament championship clinching win. Brooks earned SAC Player of the Week honors once during his junior season.

GREENVILLE, S.C. – Carson-Newman (18-13) dominated the glass and top-seeded and third-ranked Lincoln Memorial's (29-2) offense with a feisty zone that enabled the Eagles to supplant LMU 63-48 and lay claim to the South Atlantic Conference tour-nament championship Sunday afternoon at Timmons Arena.

Carson-Newman's tournament title is the third for the Eagles in school history and its first since 2002. Carson-Newman earns an automatic berth into the NCAA tournament and will be headed to postseason play for a second consecutive season.

Charles Clark (Murfreesboro, Tenn.) earned tournament MVP honors after scoring 23 points and snagging nine boards to send the Eagles past LMU. Clark scored 74 points in the tournament, nine away from Anderson's Denzail Jones and the tournament record.

"To get in this situation and have the guys perform like they did today," head men's basketball coach Chuck Benson said fresh off his first ever SAC tournament title. "It just speaks volumes for how far we've come this year. We had so many new guys and so many old guys in new roles. We kept steadily improving and it comes together in the postseason like this and we walk out of here with a conference tournament championship. We're blessed."

Carson-Newman held LMU to its worst scoring output of the season with just 48 points for the Railsplitters. The Eagles set a SAC title game record for fewest points allowed. The Railsplitters shot 35.1 percent from the field. LMU missed its first 13 shots as the Eagles' built a 14-2 lead in the game's opening minutes after Mason Bates (Cookeville, Tenn.) buried a three from

the left corner.

The Eagles outrebounded LMU 51-31. The Railsplitters had an average of plus 11 on the glass on the season and were in the top 10 in the country for the category. It marked the worst rebounding margin for LMU since a game against Lenoir-Rhyne in 2007.

Carson-Newman's 51 caroms are the most for an Eagle club since Carson-Newman had that tally against Knoxville College in a tournament at Tusculum in November 2012. For the first time this century, Carson-Newman had three players finish with at least 10 boards. Josh Rogers (Bristol, United Kingdom), Sawyer Williams (Owenton, Ky.) and Carson Brooks (Knoxville, Tenn.) all had 10 boards. Clark just missed out on joining the club with nine rebounds.

"It was demonstrated desire," Benson said. "Those guys were just animals. They wanted it. The credit goes to them. There's no

magic. This is all about desire and want and our guys wanted it badly, period."

LMU would not go quietly into the night. Lincoln Memorial countered with a 13-2 punch, taking a one-point lead (23-22) on Luquon Choice jumper from the top of the key at the 4:14 mark. After that fleeting offensive flourish, the Railsplit-ters went cold again as the half winded down. Lincoln Memorial missed its next three shots and turned the ball over twice, while Carson-Newman used a 6-0 spurt to build a 28-23 lead with 32 ticks left. Carson Brooks accounted for four of the points while Rogers swished in a 17-footer from the left win.

LMU brought the deficit down to a point in the second half after trailing by three at the break; however, Carson-Newman stamped out the Rail-splitters hopes of back-to-back tournament title. The Eagles ripped off a 14-2 run over the next passage of play, which was capped by a Charles Clark three-pointer at 11:53. The Railsplitters went 1-for-10 from the field over that span.

"This is higher than what we believed we could do," Benson said. "This is a miraculous type thing. We're very thankful for this gift. Poise is one of our five core values. We had to be pre-pared for them to make runs, maybe multiple runs. We expected it. They weren't going to walk out of this thing without putting up a major fight."

The Eagles split the regular season series with LMU, but fell by 30 points at Holt Fieldhouse five games ago. In that game, Lorenza Ross and Luquon Choice ripped the Ea-gles to shreds. The SAC player of the year Ross had 10 points and 11 assists while Choice had 33 points.

The Eagles kept the duo in check in the title game, limiting Choice to two points on 1-for-10 shooting. Ross just had a single assist and four points.

Keenan Peterson led the Railsplitters and was the only player LMU had in double digits with 10 points.

Clark's 23 led the Eagles. Brooks tallied his fourth double-double of the season with 13 points and his 10 rebounds.

Former Carson-Newman men's basketball player Antoine Davis has advanced in his pro-fessional playing career overseas, jumping up two leagues from Germany's Regionaliga to the Bundesliga/Pro-A.

Davis, the reigning Regionaliga player of the year, will compete next season with the Rhon-dorf Dragons, which finished 14-8 last year and third in Pro-B's South Division. The Dragons, much like Davis, received promotion and will compete in the Pro-A next season.

"I'm very pleased for Antoine, no one is more deserving," Carson-Newman head men's basket-ball coach Chuck Benson said. "He will perform consistently at a high level and this is the begin-ning of more great things for Antoine Davis."

Rhondorf sits on the Rhein River south of Co-logne near the country's eastern border with Belgium.

Davis averaged 26 points, seven rebounds and 2.8 assists per game for the Sechtem Toros.

The Rustburg, Va.-native had his best game of the season against Grevenbroich when he dropped 42 points in a 90-78 Toros' win.

He had eight games on the plus side of 30 points and shot 54 percent from the field, 42 percent from three and 83 percent at the free throw line.

"We had him as a guest at practice last Feb-ruary" Dragons head coach Boris Kaminski told Eurobasket.com. "He will fit to us on and off the court. Besides his great stats, he has a high basketball IQ and stable defense. I am convinced that he will be an absolute enhancement for us."

Davis is Carson-Newman's all-time Division II leader for scoring average, scoring 18.2 points per game in his Carson-Newman career.

He's in the top 10 in Carson-Newman's all-time scoring list and number two since the team moved to Division II with 1,526 career points.
