2015-2016 ANNUAL COMMITTEE PROJECTS
COLLABORATIVE COLLECTION DEVELOPMENT COLLECTION MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE
Deborah BlecicCollections Coordinator
University of Illinois at [email protected]
Why now?
CARLI libraries are buying fewer books
Source: Michael Zeoli, YBP Library Services. CARLI ebook symposium, May 7, 2015
The decrease in I-Share borrowing also suggests fewer unique print books
The CARLI Collection Management Committee focused on collaboration and conducted a survey to see who was interested in exploring collaboration.
Based on interest, a follow-up webinar was held on May 9, 2016 and archived at: https://www.carli.illinois.edu/carli-print-and-electronic-cooperative-collection-development-options-monographs-ay17
IN FY16
52 libraries responded. 11 were very interested and had time and money to contribute.
Top areas: Health Sciences (10), Business (10), Education (9), Literature (8), Physical Sciences (6), Computer Science/Math (5), Fine Arts (5), Social Sciences (4), History (4)
In FY17 the committee followed-up via phone calls and e-mails with collaboration volunteers.

2016-2017 PROJECT
How might CARLI help institutions band together to apply for grant money and projects?
How does this project matter in light of the many other preservation resources available online and through other organizations?

Open Access (OA) literature is digital, online, free of charge, and free of most copyright and licensing restrictions.
Open Access by Peter Suber (2012)
OPEN ACCESS DEFINITION
The Resource Sharing committee is looking for feedback into the role Open Access plays when filling Interlibrary Loan requests.
1. Does your ILL unit actively utilize Open Access resources when attempting to fill Interlibrary Loan borrowing requests?a. What resources do you use when searching for Open Access materials (Google
Scholar, Directory of Open Access Journals, PubMed Central . . .)
2. Where in the workflow does this occur?a. Are you actively searching for OA availability before searching out other libraries
that might fill the request?b. Or does it more resemble a search of last resort, before having to cancel a request?
3. Do you actively track ILL requests that are available through Open Access resources? If so, how?
4. When you discover that an article is freely available, is it your practice to fill the request, or direct the patron to the request?
a. Fill the request and provide linkb. Fill the request, deliver file, and provide linkc. Cancel the request and provide linkd. Cancel the request, deliver file, and provide link

IMPACT ON CARLI MEMBER LIBRARIES
SFX & INTEGRATION WITH OTHER PRODUCTSSFX SYSTEM COMMITTEE
Peter Tubbs, Rush University
SFX & INTEGRATION WITH OTHER PRODUCTS
SFX interface elements from Wheaton College, Northeastern Illinois University & Western Illinois University
SFX can be more than just a “Find It” button & A-Z list
SFX & INTEGRATION WITH OTHER PRODUCTS
SFX can complement (and be complemented by) many other systems used by academic libraries.• Discovery services• Interlibrary loan• CrossRef• Content browser apps
SFX & INTEGRATION WITH OTHER PRODUCTS
SFX can also:• Be a “knowledgebase
of record,” providing up-to-date data to other services
• A centralized menu of services able to accept OpenURL citation data
SFX & INTEGRATION WITH OTHER PRODUCTS
For SFX administrators:
Increase returns on the time invested in grooming the SFX knowledgebase
Offer useful services beyond full text links on the SFX menu
For other library staff:
Learn about how SFX can save time and improve other library services
Find help making informed decisions in cases where SFX & other products offer overlapping functionality
SFX & INTEGRATION WITH OTHER PRODUCTS
Each information sheet provides:• A brief overview of the product or service• Notes on how it can be integrated with SFX• Pros and cons of integrating with SFX• Links to relevant documentation and
implementation instructions from Ex Librisand/or the vendor
SFX & INTEGRATION WITH OTHER PRODUCTS
Available information sheets: • 360 Core (ProQuest)• BrowZine (Third Iron)• CrossRef• EBSCO Discovery Service• EZProxy (OCLC)• ILLiad (OCLC)• Primo (Ex Libris)• WorldCat Local (OCLC)

MARCEDIT FOR DATABASE MAINTENANCE: A SELECT PRIMERTECHNICAL SERVICES COMMITTEE

MarcEdit for Database Maintenance: A Select Primer
CARLI TECHNICAL SERVICES COMMITTEE ANNUAL PROJECT
• MarcEdit is a software product that can be used to edit MARC records (bibliographic and holding)
• It was developed by Terry Reese, head of Digital Initiatives at the Ohio State University Libraries, and available free to all libraries
• He is still actively developing this product
CARLI TECHNICAL SERVICES COMMITTEE ANNUAL PROJECT
• Its ability to perform changes to single records or groups of records makes it a useful tool
• This ability to perform batch editing means that catalogers have a powerful and time-saving tool to use to enhance and maintain our catalog records
CARLI TECHNICAL SERVICES COMMITTEE ANNUAL PROJECT
Some background/history• A few CARLI libraries had been using MarcEdit for
past 5-7 years• Enough interest for CARLI to request Terry Reese to
host a series of webinars in Spring 2015• Now on his website as “MarcEdit 101”
CARLI TECHNICAL SERVICES COMMITTEE ANNUAL PROJECT
Some background/history• After the webinars were broadcast, some reactions
indicated the need for training materials that provided a clear way forward for beginners/catalogers who only work with MARC as found in OCLC Connexion or Voyager Cataloging Client
• Based on feedback from webinar attendees, and the experiences of TS committee members and colleagues
CARLI TECHNICAL SERVICES COMMITTEE ANNUAL PROJECT
• A general introduction, with outlines of some (not all) of MarcEdit’s features, definitions of Reese’s terminology, and a sample workflow
• Step-by-step instructions, with numerous screenshots, showing how to perform two straightforward and common bibliographic maintenance tasks
• Discussion of other projects that could be done easily/well using MarcEdit
• Selection of helps and guides to using MarcEdit
CARLI TECHNICAL SERVICES COMMITTEE ANNUAL PROJECT
Why does this matter?• Time-efficient method for bibliographic maintenance
tasks• Tool to move from piecework to batchwork• Enabling “doing more with less” or dealing with
backlogs/new projects
CARLI TECHNICAL SERVICES COMMITTEE ANNUAL PROJECT
How can this be leveraged for CARLI?• Accuracy, consistency and richness of bibliographic
data across all I-Share library catalogs helps everyone
CARLI TECHNICAL SERVICES COMMITTEE ANNUAL PROJECT
What’s next?• It takes its place next to the other training materials at
CARLI• We hope it will be of use to non-I-Share libraries• Could be converted into video format

Thank you!
