Wed., February 18 2 pm - 3 pm Technology Center, Room 8322 “Against Wind & Tide: The African American Struggle Against the Colonization Movement” CETL, The Last Good Book I Read Colloquium - Special Selection for African American History Month Professor Nathanial Williams discusses Ousmane Power-Greene’s book about 19th century African American response to colonization. Thurs., February 19 11 am - 12:15 pm Technology Center, Ellipse Dressed to Kill: Fashion and the Art of Chic Professionals in the fashion industry will talk about career paths, designs, and inspirations. Thurs., February 19 Noon - 1:30 pm Student Union, Room 3114 (Snow date: Feb. 26) African Dance & Drumming with Chiku Awali Drumming and dance workshop. Limited number of drums available – bring your own if you can. Thurs., February 19 7:30 pm - 9 pm Technology Center, Ellipse Film: Dear White People Witty view of contemporary race relations by Justin Simien. The film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival 2014 and was awarded for Breakthrough Talent. Mon., February 23 2 pm - 3 pm Technology Center, Room 8322 The Life and Legacy of A. Philip Randolph Dr. David Lucander presents the legacy of civil rights and labor leader A. Philip Randolph (1889 - 1979), whose negotiations resulted in the 1948 Executive Order ending segregation of the armed forces and who led the 1963 March on Washington where Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. delivered his “I Have a Dream,” speech. Wed., February 25 7 pm Cultural Arts Theater (Snow date; March 10) “I , Too, Sing America: The Contributions & Challenges of African Americans in the US Military Part I” Music, dance, and dramatic performance honoring contributions by African Americans in the US military and their determination and pride in serving their country. Archival film footage with commentary by Gen. Colin Powell and others. Thurs., February 26 11 am - 12:15 pm Technology Center, Ellipse “I Dream A World: Diversity in Comic Books, Graphic Novels & Video Games” A panel discussion featuring authors, artists and designers who will share their insights. Book signing to follow. Bridge Event with Women’s History Month February 27 11 am - Noon Student Union, Room 3214 Until the Brighter Tomorrow: One Woman’s Courageous Climb from the Projects to the Podium Author Valerie Irick Rainford grew up in a city housing project and presents her inspiring life’s journey, based on belief in faith, tenacity and trust in oneself. Book signing follows.
