2015 ANNUAL REPORT FLUTIE SPECTRUM ENTERPRISES: MORE THAN JUST A PAYCHECK Following months of research and preparation, the Flutie Foundation established Flutie Spectrum Enterprises in early 2015. FSE is a social enterprise with a mission to create employment for adults across the autism spectrum. Currently, an esti- mated 90% of adults with autism face unemployment or underemployment, which will translate to hundreds of thousands of individuals over the next decade as 500,000 adults with autism age out of the school system. The first microbusiness in its portfolio, FSE Office Solutions, began serving customers in June. All employees are paid at least minimum wage, and new micro-businesses will be added to the portfolio based on the skills and interests of the employees. Furthermore, we strive to provide community integration as a part of their workday. FSE is a brand new way for people to support the Flutie Foundation’s mission to help those with autism live life to the fullest, specifically in the area of growing toward adult independence. While you may have supported the Foundation in the past by giving money or by giving sweat, you can now support us by giving business! Allow us to take care of the busy work that takes up too much of your time, and feel confident that your use of our services makes a tremendous impact on the lives of adults with autism. E-mail Brittany Collins ([email protected]) for a quote for your mailing, assembly, shredding, or other needs! The goal of the Doug Flutie, Jr. Foundation for Autism is to help families affected by autism live life to the fullest. Through our programs and partnerships, we help people with autism get access to services, lead more active lifestyles, and grow toward adult independence. WWW.FLUTIEFOUNDATION.ORG

OUR IMPACT IN 2015

This year will mark 17 years as Executive Director of the Flutie Foundation. While we have had many years of success and growth, 2015 was truly a memorable year with the launch of Flutie Spectrum Enterprises (FSE) and the amazing stories of inspiration from our community partners and families.

I could share hundreds of great stories that demonstrate how you help us support families affected by autism live life to the fullest. With your help, we disseminated over $650,000 directly to our community partners and families who have the greatest need. Together, we are giving them access to services, helping them lead active lifestyles and grow toward adult independence.

One great story is from a young couple who took the opportunity to form a friendship while their son was improving his coordination and social skills in an adaptive dance class. “Being with people who “get it” is priceless. You cannot imagine all of the information about services, clothes, camps and everything imaginable that has been shared among the parents. Sometimes you come in stressed, tired and overwhelmed, but always leave encouraged, uplifted and smiling.”

We are looking forward to another great year in 2016 with the expansion of FSE and many more partnerships to support individuals with autism and their families. Please visit our website or join us on social media to learn more about how we help families live life to the fullest. We look forward to hearing from you and hopefully seeing you at one of our events.

OUR IMPACT IN 2015

GENERAL GRANT PROGRAM: 2015 RECIPIENTSIn 2015, The Flutie Foundation distributed $378,000 through its annual grant cycle to 35 organizations that provided the following:

Helping Individuals and Families Live Life to the Fullest

“ Both Jessie and I look forward to teen nights! She enjoys and benefits from the enthusiastic and caring peer mentors and the skill of the music therapist in drawing her in and encouraging her to participate. As a mom, I get to enjoy a little time to myself to socialize with other parents while knowing she is enjoying herself and in good hands!”

— Michelle Rivelli Jessica Zangrillo’s mother

“ My favorite moment (from the practice event) was while passengers were deplaning, I heard a mother ask her son with autism if he wanted to go on a real flight one day. He looked at her and said, ‘Yeah, mommy! I can do it!’ To witness his anxiety and fear fade away was a life changing moment for him, his mother, and for myself. To know we made a difference in his life and that he has the confidence he will be safe on an airplane was the real reward.”

— PSA Instructor and Flight Attendant

“ We have never seen our son be so positive…we do think having the chance to learn/practice these skills in a real-world environment, are resulting in steady changes in his behavior and stress level. As with most people, but especially kids with Asperger’s, previewing by experience a major lifestyle change, such as the college experience, goes a long way in easing the transition and greasing the wheel for success.”

— Mother of Program Participant
