25 Mufti March 2015 ANZAC DAY 2015 2015 ANZAC Day MELBOURNE DAWN SERVICE AND MARCH O n 25 April 2015, ANZAC Day will be marked as the Centenary of ANZAC, one of the most significant national commemorations since Federation. Around Victoria there will be many commemorative services and marches, and in Melbourne the main focus will be on the Shrine of Remembrance. At the Shrine of Remembrance large numbers are expected for the Dawn Service, which commences at 6.00 am, and all those wishing to attend should plan on arriving at the Shrine precinct between 4.00-5.00 am. Details on detours, road closures and public transport arrangements, which will apply to assist in the conduct of the Dawn Service and the ANZAC Day March, will be posted on the Victorian Government ANZAC Centenary website as soon as it is finalised (www.anzaccentenary.vic.gov.au). Screens will be established around the Shrine precinct to enable those who don’t have a direct sightline to the Shrine Forecourt to follow the Dawn Service. The narration that occurs prior to the commencement of the Service will be delivered by MC Peter Meehan from 5.45 am. Immediately after the Service, at approximately 6.30 am, a traditional Gunfire Breakfast will be served on the lawns in front of Victoria Barracks. As St Kilda Road will be closed to all vehicle traffic by this time, Dawn Service attendees will be able to move readily to the breakfast and a gold coin donation is encouraged to assist the RSL in their veteran support activities. Melbourne ANZAC Day March A special feature of the 2015 March will be the place reserved in the March for descendants of Australians and New Zealanders who served in World War I (WWI). The March of Medals is to allow all families with those links to have one family member, wearing the medals of their forebear, to march in place of that WWI ANZAC. Only those descendants wearing the WWI medal group of a WWI serviceman or woman will be able to join the March of Medals contingent. The medals should be worn on the right breast, as required by protocol. Only the actual person awarded medals can wear them on the left-hand side. All descendants are expected to wear suitable attire and follow the ANZAC Day March Protocols. The ANZAC Day Marshals will arrange descendants in divisions that will march six abreast, in a formal way, thereby recreating some of the atmosphere of the large marches in Melbourne in the 1920s and 30s, where WWI veterans marched in massive numbers. Descendants who intend to participate are encouraged to register online: www.anzaccentenary.vic.gov.au. Please note that you will not be issued a ticket or other entry pass as a result of registration. The registration is primarily to assist in estimating the numbers likely to be involved for planning and logistics purposes. The criteria for participating will not be registration, but to be at the forming-up places identified for the WWI descendant contingent at least 30 minutes prior to the stepping-off time, and wearing the WWI medals of your WWI forebear. The Assembly Plan for the March, with the locations to form up, and the stepping off times, is available in this lift- out and also on the ANZAC Centenary and Victorian RSL websites. All those intending to participate should study this information carefully. Adherence to the Assembly Plan and the timings will assist the March Marshals to deliver a well-organised March that runs to time and avoids frustration for participants. The March of Medals contingent that comprises the WWI descendants will be formed into three divisions; one for WWI Navy and two for WWI Army, or 1st AIF. They will be led by specially formed contingents of serving Navy and Army personnel, complemented by groups wearing the military uniforms of that era. The ANZAC Day March will conclude at approximately 1.00 pm, with WWI descendants being halted on the Shrine forecourt immediately below the main steps that lead up to the Shrine entrance. The Official Commemorative Service, led by the Governor, will then commence; addressing, in particular, the veterans who participated in the March and the WWI descendants present. This Service will conclude at approximately 1.30 pm. Descendants of WWI servicemen and women from other Commonwealth or Allied countries, such as the UK, India, Pakistan, South Africa, Canada, USA or France, are also urged to participate

2015 ANZAC DayMelbourNe DAwN ServiCe AND MArCh

On 25 April 2015, ANZAC Day will be marked as the Centenary of ANZAC, one of the most

significant national commemorations since Federation.

Melbourne ANZAC Day MarchA special feature of the 2015 March will be the place reserved in the March for descendants of Australians and New Zealanders who served in World War I (WWI).

The criteria for participating will not be registration, but to be at the forming-up places identified for the WWI descendant contingent at least

30 minutes prior to the stepping-off time, and wearing the WWI medals of your WWI forebear.

The Assembly Plan for the March, with the locations to form up, and the stepping off times, is available in this lift-out and also on the ANZAC Centenary and Victorian RSL websites.

Descendants of WWI servicemen and women from other Commonwealth or Allied countries, such as the UK, India, Pakistan, South Africa, Canada, USA or France, are also urged to participate

in the 2015 March. You will find on the March Assembly Plan the location of the various national Commonwealth/Allied contingents, and WWI descendants are encouraged to join them. Again, the WWI medals you wear must be worn on the right breast and the usual March protocols in terms of dress and behaviour must be observed. Only one descendant per WWI veteran should march.

Descendants of those who fought in the Turkish contingents at Gallipoli are warmly encouraged to march, observing the same protocols set out above. The Turkish RSL Sub-Branch has its normal place in the March and the Turkish WWI descendants are requested to congregate immediately behind Australian and New Zealand WWI descendants, as set out in the Assembly Plan.

All Marchers must be formally attired and obey the directions of March Marshals. The 2015 ANZAC Day March in Melbourne will have some special aspects but, importantly, it remains primarily a March for veterans and

serving ADF personnel. It is not a procession or a parade. Accordingly, only one carer for a disabled or elderly veteran and only one family descendant per deceased veteran should be marching. All World War II (WWII) veterans participating will ride in vehicles provided for them.

We encourage all those eligible to take part in what will be an historic ANZAC Centenary March and encourage all Victorians to support their local or Melbourne March.

Order of MarchThe Victorian Government ANZAC Day Committee and His Excellency the Governor have requested that all WWI descendants be included in the Commemoration Service immediately following the March. In order to achieve this, the March of Medals of WWI Descendants will be placed at the rear of the March; this means they will be immediately present at the Shrine Forecourt during the final phase of the

March and at the commencement of the Official Commemoration Service, led by the Governor.

The Order of March will be:

• Disabled veterans in cars• Headquarters Group• War Widows Guild• NZ veterans• Women’s Services• WWII RAN and subsequent

deployments• WWII Army• WWII RAAF and subsequent

deployments• BCOF• Korea/Malaysia • Vietnam • Post-1975 veterans• Commonwealth and Allies • WWI descendants• Boer War descendants• Scouts and Marshals.

AssemblyThe Chief Marshal will have overall responsibility for the March. Participants should complete assembly 30 minutes prior to the expected time for their formation to step-off.

March protocolsThe following protocols have been decided on by the veterans:

• All marchers should form-up and march six abreast.

• Veterans are to march directly behind their unit banner, accompanied by one carer if needed. That carer should be of an age where they can directly assist the veteran. Veterans having difficulty completing the March, and all WWII

veterans, are encouraged to use the transport provided, but must remain in the vehicle until the March is completed.

• If a veteran must fall out of the March, he or she should be directed to a Marshal for assistance. Unit Associations are to continue moving so as not to disrupt the momentum of the March.

• Descendants are to march behind the veterans and be old enough to march the full distance (approximately one kilometre) without assistance.

• Representation of your veteran forebears is to be restricted to one per veteran and the descendant is to wear the veteran’s medals on the right breast (the left breast is reserved for the original recipient of the medals).

• Descendants are to dress in appropriate clothing, as your forebears would have done. Therefore, all marchers should wear neat and tidy clothing, out of respect for the fallen (torn denim, sporting attire and dirty joggers are not considered appropriate).

• Carrying pictures of relatives, and pushing prams and pushers, are not permitted.

• Veterans are requested not to join or leave the March other than at the assembly and dispersal points.
