Oil & Gas Awards 2015 3

Welcome to the 2015 CanadaOil & Gas Awards commemorative Yearbook

hese were the Inaugural Awards for Canada and the organizations and individuals in this journal were acknowledged by the award’s judging panel to have excelled in their work in the past 12 months, whilst also focusing on the industry core values of Health & Safety, Environmental Stewardship and Corporate Social Responsibility. The Oil & Gas Awards champion best practice and recognize organizations operating in the upstream and midstream sectors of the industry. The media and members of the general public do not distinguish between the different sectors of the industry, which is why the Awards incorporate categories for all parts of the upstream and midstream sectors. The absent mindedness of an individual on an assembly line can have dramatic consequences months later should equipment fail when being used in the field. This reflects badly on the industry as a whole, we therefore think it is extremely important that best practice is championed from top to bottom and the Awards are a platform to promote to the press and public the great work being done. The Oil & Gas Awards are unique in highlighting the incredible innovation and commitment to positive industry development and expansion, rebutting traditionally negative mainstream coverage. The Awards celebrate corporate success twinned with organization’s commitment to health & safety, environmental stewardship and corporate social responsibility.

In this Inaugural year for the Awards in this region we also had the Industry Summit during the day immediately before the Awards gala dinner in the evening. In this yearbook you can read coverage from the Industry Summit keynote presentations and speaker panels discussing the challenges the industry faces. I hope you find this interesting and hope to see you at next years Industry Summit.

I would like to congratulate all of the organizations and individuals that were voted finalists by the judges, and to the winners - well done! Many thanks to the thought leading organizations and individuals that participated in the Industry Summit and Awards. We especially appreciate the support of our judges, sponsors and partners, without whom the Oil & Gas Awards would not be possible.

I hope that you enjoy reading this commemorative Yearbook, please do not hesitate to contact me if you would like to share your thoughts and feedback.

Best regards,

Daniel P. CreaseyChairman, Oil & Gas Awards.

Guest of Honor Editorial

guest of honor the honorable lois MitchellLieutenant Governor Mitchell gave thanks to the oil and gas industry for its contributions to Canada.

When compared to many of oil and gas producing nations throughout the world, Canada is a relative newcomer. Despite vast resources throughout the nation – especially in resource-rich Alberta – the nation has only been in the energy business since oil was discovered in 1858 in Ontario and natural gas was found in New Brunswick in 1859.

A newcomer herself to national politics, the Honorable Lois Mitchell, the newly appointed Lieutenant Governor of Alberta, praised the entrepreneurs and innovators who put Canada in the game as a major player on the international oil and gas market.

“This evening, we celebrate the very best of the Canadian oil and gas industry nationwide,” Mitchell said in her opening remarks before the awards gala as the guest of honor. “It is my very great pleasure to congratulate this year’s award recipients and to thank all the nominees for your contributions to the industry.”

Mitchell gave a brief overview of the history of energy exploration and production in Canada, starting with those discoveries in the early days of the industry. Alberta did not come into its own until much later than its eastern provincial counterparts – natural gas was found in Medicine Hat in 1883, and oil was discovered in Turner Valley in 1914. Alberta, however, has since become the epicenter of Canada’s energy sector.

“While this province has emerged as a center of our oil and gas industry, most Canadians would probably be surprised to learn that Alberta’s development came after the discoveries in the eastern provinces,” Mitchell said. “Alberta we know is blessed with a great bounty of resources, but Canada’s oil and gas industry as a whole has emerged as a world leader thanks to people from across the nation who have contributed valuable expertise, innovation and leadership.”

Prime Minister Stephen Harper announced Mitchell’s appointment as Lieutenant Governor of Alberta in May 2015. Before her appointment, she garnered over 25 years of business experience, culminating in her current

roles as Senior Partner and Founder of Rainmaker Global Business Development, a consulting and marketing firm. Mitchell also sits on numerous Boards of Directors, including USB Bank (Canada), Mitacs and Canada World Youth. In 2012, she was appointed a Member of the Order of Canada and received the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal.

As an accomplished businesswoman, Mitchell understands the invaluable opportunities an event like the Oil and Gas Awards gala and industry summit present to decision-makers like those in attendance in Calgary.

“I hope that everyone who attended today’s sessions discovered exciting new ideas and insights and made some promising new contacts,” Mitchell said. “I know from my own business experience that this kind of networking opportunity is invaluable to fostering ongoing success.”

Only time will tell where the relationships forged and innovations shared during the Oil and Gas Awards gala and industry summit will lead today’s energy leaders. Mitchell hoped for nothing but the best for the industry as she closed her remarks at the gala.

“I wish all of you continued growth in your future, and again congratulations to the award winners,” Mitchell said.

Industry Summit Editorial

keynote addressCanada and the United States have maintained their strong allegiance throughout downturn of the energy industry, and Christopher Guith expects that to continue.

There is no doubt the United States and Canada share one of the friendliest ally relationships in the world. Through the energy renaissance that has taken place in North America with the increased use of hydraulic fracturing and horizontal drilling, the bond between the two nations has grown even stronger.

For the United States, the production of Alberta’s oil sands has helped the nation wean itself from overseas sources of crude supplied by nations with nefarious attitudes toward the States. For example, Christopher Guith, Senior Vice President of Policy for the U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s Institute for 21st Century Energy said in his keynote presentation the United States has gone from importing about 1 million barrels of oil per day from Angola to zero as of May 2015.

“One of the greatest benefits of the energy renaissance that we have seen in the last five years is the energy security benefits,” Guith said. “Ultimately what it means for our country is we’re a lot more insulated from world and global events.

Guith cited the budding civil war in Crimea as well as ISIS’s growing oil production and refining capabilities in northern Iraq as reasons for Canada and the United States to continue working in conjunction toward increased energy independence.

“Ultimately, what this has done from a North American standpoint is, the big buildup of production coming from Canada and the U.S. has created an insulation buffer keeping prices from fluctuating the way they had been historically, especially south of the border,” Guith said.

One stumbling block that exists between the two nations is the United States’ outdated ban on the export of crude oil and natural gas. However, since refineries are able to export products made from these commodities, U.S. refineries set throughput records in the summer of 2015.

Guith said that he would lead some to believe there is capacity to take on the light sweet crude coming out of the ground in the United States, but these refineries are truly set up to handle the heavy crude from the Alberta oil sands. However, the export ban, Guith said, forces

American oil to be stranded in these refineries as well as producing product from the light sweet crude.

“Ultimately, I don’t think anyone envisions this pushing out Canadian heavy, but while we have this ban in place, it certainly is a much higher likelihood there is a displacement of Canadian select than there would be if we could export our light crude,” Guith said. “Getting the ability of the United States to start exporting crude is something that is going to benefit the American economy but it also benefits producers up here because it frees up whatever overlap there is in the Gulf Coast refinery slate in order to prevent any western Canadian select being pushed out.”

Even if the ban is lifted, that doesn’t automatically mean the flow of oil will begin right away. Due to Saudi Arabia’s goal to stifle the price of oil worldwide and more efficient production methods in North America, the worldwide energy industry continues to exceed the daily worldwide demand for oil by about 1.5 million, according to Guith.

The United States and Canada have experienced significant decreases in rig counts as a result of this disparity. Guith said rigs are down 72 percent throughout Canada, and that number leaps to 76 percent in Alberta.

“This pain is spread throughout the entire continent, and it’s one of the things that we spend a lot of time at the chamber trying to explain to people,” Guith said. “While consumers are benefiting tremendously and it’s a great stimulus to our economy, this industry that floated our entire economy through the Great Recession, the industry creating jobs while others were shutting jobs by the boatload, is in some significant pain now.”

Once again, lifting the ban on U.S. crude exports is one way to alleviate that pain, according to Guith. He said the U.S. energy market is artificially created by an export ban despite every study conducted on the ban stating if U.S. crude was placed on the global market, it would increase the global supply, therefore applying downward price pressure on gasoline.

“It’s a slow trog, but I’m willing to wager that we change our 40-year-old law some time in 2015,” Guith said.

Oil & Gas Awards 2015 9

The ban on U.S. energy exports is just one aspect of the American energy industry that could negatively affect Canadian producers and operators. Of course, there are the ever-present anti-fracking protestors – or, “fractivists” – that Guith said continue to disseminate untruths about fracking.

“If we as an industry are not more proactive in explaining to the public what we’re doing, the other side is going to fill their heads with disinformation,” Guith said. “I will admit that maybe Americans are more gullible to this disinformation, but the reality is that normal people buy into some of this stuff, so it is incumbent upon all of us to make sure there’s not that vacuum created so the other side can fill it.”

Guith also alerted the audience of the new U.S. EPA regulation slated to be enacted later in 2015 meant to reduce the pollutant ozone. Targeting a huge swath of American industry, the new rule has been called the

most expensive regulation in world history due to its far-reaching effect. Guith said the standard is so difficult to maintain, it has been predicted that 2/3rds of the United States will be in nonattainment, which could lead to the federal government withholding highway money from local jurisdictions to inhibiting Clean Air Act permits for manufacturers.

While Americans might be worse for wear from this regulation, Canadian industry stands to make immense gains if the current draft of this regulation is enacted, according to Guith.

“Canada may very well be a beneficiary there,” Guith said. “If we start shutting down permits to drill in places like Utah and Montana, who knows, maybe that means more demand in British Columbia and Alberta. For your benefit, I hope that, but for our benefit, I hope not.”

The Canada Oil & Gas Awards are more than a celebration of its best and brightest who help the sector flourish. It is also an opportunity for leaders to com-pare notes on how to maintain and improve performance within the most important ele-ments of the industry.

The conference provides a forum for vital introspection via its Industry Summit, a five-part series of panel discussions involving representatives with a proven track record: they come from the companies be-ing acknowledged at the con-ference for their successes.

The Industry Summit was held during the day of the Awards gala. The focus of the summit revolves around the core themes of the awards. The aim of the summit is to com-municate to the market the best practice that the finalists are implementing to ensure the Oil and Gas Awards initiative

educates as well as acknow-ledges achievements.

The summit panels focused on five key industry themes:Leadership Panel moderator, Quinn holtby, president/ CEO, Katch Kan; panelists Garth Braun, president/CEO, Blackbird Energy, Pat Carlson, CEO, Seven Generat ion Energy, and dr. Bruce C. McGee, president/CEO, E-T Energy.

The leadership panel brought together leaders of a variety of companies to discuss some of the most pertinent issues they are facing.

“What we are focusing on with this change in commodity price is continuing to imple-ment new technology to de-velop or delineate the resource, reduce our stage lengths, in-crease tonnage and try to ul-timately increase the ultimate recovery,” Carlson said.

“We are stewards of a re-source for Grand Prairie, for Al-

berta, for Canada,” Braun said. “The government has basically given us the responsibility to develop this resource with best practices.”Health and safety Moderated b y B e n P r e s t o n , v i c e -president, Marsh & Mclennan Companies. Panelists: Bradley huber, general manager, hSE-Trinidad drilling, Leo Sullivan, account manager, Total Safety, ryan Groot, gen-eral manager, hSE-Murphy Oil, and Ephimios ‘George’ Sgouromitis, corporate man-ager, hSS&E-Gibson Energy.

The panel focused on health and safety risks within the industry and considered the impact of the current industry downturn on health and safety.

“The downturn has given us the time to really focus on our programs,” huber noted. “One key point with health and safety is to keep an open mind: don’t get stuck on, ‘my way is the best or the only way’. There

are always better ways to do things so keep an open mind — there are a lot of smart guys out there.”

“From a midstream perspec-tive we find we do a lot of work with large and small oil com-panies and suppliers, (and) you can see customers are not re-ducing their health and safety spend. They understand the return on investment,” Sgouro-mitis said. “The safety message has to be consistent, focused and very clear.”Corporate social respon-sibility Moderated by hilary McMeekin, senior account director, Edelman. Panelists: Fred hutchings, senior vice-president, Maxxam Analytics, Tammy Charland-McLaughlin, vice-president of operations, Primco dene, and Thomas Miller, vice-president, com-munications, Breitling Energy.

The CSr panel focused on the prevalence of corporate social responsibility within

the industry, and the drivers for companies implementing meaningful initiatives.

“For us, first and foremost CSr is an employee engage-ment opportunity. We employ a lot of young graduates; it is often their first job. One thing we have learned that they look for is the opportunity to iden-tify and engage with an em-ployer, so for us CSr is a way to do something meaningful away from the confines of the work environment. So, we look for CSr opportunities that involve our employees and are mean-ingful to them,” hutchings said. “Another reason for CSr is to reinforce our values and ethics

in the public marketplace. We feel our employees look for us to do that almost as a reassur-ance they are working for the right company. I think CSr rose out of a notion of a social license to do business, it was not sufficient to just be a good employer.”

The final two panel discus-sions examined New govern-ment, new business, and im-port/export.

The Oil & Gas Awards cham-pion best practices and recognize responsible organizations operating

in the upstream and mid-stream sectors of the industry. The Oil & Gas Awards, held in Calgary on Wednesday, June 24, are unique in highlighting the incredible innovation and commitment to positive indus-try development and expan-sion.

The awards showcase the in-dustry at its very best and pro-vide a platform to demonstrate the great work being done. The awards celebrate corporate success twinned with organ-ization’s commitment to health and safety, environmental stew-ardship and corporate social re-sponsibility.

berta, for Canada,” Braun said.

Panelists: Fred hutchings, senior vice-president, Maxxam Analytics, Tammy Charland-McLaughlin, vice-president of operations, Primco dene, and Thomas Miller, vice-president, com-munications, Breitling Energy.

The CSr panel focused on the prevalence of corporate social responsibility within

the industry, and the drivers for companies implementing meaningful initiatives.

The awards, established in 2012, are determined by a panel of judges composed of 25 judg-es. This year’s winners came from a list of many hundreds of entries that were whittled down by the judging panel to form the list of finalists in each category.

“having run the Oil & Gas Awards for the last three years throughout North America we have never seen such a great response from the market,” said awards chairman daniel Creasey. “responsible develop-ment of energy remains the highest priority in Canada, and the finalists and winners ... are testament to the strength in depth Canada’s oil-and-gas sector enjoys.”

Industry Summit Editorial

leadershipExecutives throughout the oil and gas industry have plenty of issues to contemplate while trying to keep their businesses afloat in the latest downturn in commodity prices.

With the price of a barrel of Brent crude oil at about $49 as of August 8 – a 53 percent decrease from the summer of 2014, according to the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation – executives of countless energy companies throughout Canada are coming up with ways to thrive in this down cycle. While costs must be cut wherever possible while riding out the storm, executives at the panel discussion on leadership agreed that investments in innovation must continue in order to survive.

“I think you have to innovate in order to maintain a profit margin, and you have to maintain a profit margin in order to stay in business,” said Pat Carlson, CEO of Seven Generations Energy, an independent oil company focused on the acquisition, development and value optimization of tight and shale hydrocarbon resource plays. “In both cases, the market is oversupplied, so it will be filled by low-cost supply. So the challenge for entrepreneurs and inventors is, you’ve got to innovate. In terms of raising money and being funded, there is no alternative.”

Not only must E&P companies continue to invest in technology, inventors must continue to develop new methods to expand profitability for their clients. Bruce C. McGee, Ph.D., President and CEO of E-T Energy, launched his company to market his invention ET-DSP, an extraction process for bitumen and heavy oil deposits which are stranded too deep to mine and too shallow for steam-assisted gravity drained techniques. The technology currently is being used in the company’s Poplar Creek project in Fort McMurray, Alberta’s oil sands.

This type of innovation must remain in the forefront of the industry during down times like these, he believes.

“I think when the commodity prices go down, the first thing you see is a panic in investors, and they tend to move away from our industry, and they tend to move away fairly quickly,” McGee said. “So, innovation sometimes has a short-term agenda, sometimes a long-term agenda. But the idea of saving an industry really is based on making sure you have an innovative approach to technology and you can embrace it and execute it.”

There are ways to use innovation to improve upon the energy industry’s social license to operate, as well, according to Carlson. For example, for Seven Generation’s fracking operations, his company relies on a nitrogen-based foam that carries proppant into the formation and stimulates wells at a fraction of the cost of a strictly water-based process. He said this process uses just 1/6th of the water slick-based frack jobs require.

However, the nitrogen process still has ecological ramifications. Despite saving water, the gas produced using nitrogen gel as a stimulant must be flared, posing another environmental risk.

Environmentalists may oppose all methods of fracking. As long as technology is working its way toward better solutions continuously, Carlson believes the best way to handle the ecological activists is to keep communication open.

“The technology isn’t there yet, but perhaps we can even eliminate the use of nitrogen foam, or use another gas as a foaming chemical and just sell that gas right into the pipeline and not need to flare at all,” Carlson said. “We’re looking at innovating to solve some of these problems, but if we don’t get the public engaged in that dialogue, if we don’t make them part of the solution, if we don’t take these choices to the public, I can expect we will continue to see resistance as an industry.”

Moderator Quinn Holtby, President and CEO of Katch Kan – a fluid containment system manufacturer based in Edmonton – agrees that technology is the way to maintain already loft industry standards.

“I think it makes the most sense that obviously innovation is a super important part of how do we do the best job out there,” Holtby said.

It will take more than technological advancements to bring the oil industry back into the good graces of the general public, however. Holtby cited a Nielsen survey that found after tobacco, oil is the least trusted industry in the United States. In Canada, the oil industry was at the bottom of the survey a couple years ago, Holtby also said.

Oil & Gas Awards 2015 25

Moderator: Quinn Holtby, President & CEO, Katch Kan

speakers: Garth Braun, CEO/President and Director, Blackbird Energy

Pat Carlson, CEO, Seven Generations Energy

Dr. Bruce C. McGee PhD, PEng, President and Chief Executive Officer, E-T Energy

To rectify the energy business’s reputation, Garth Braun believes the industry needs to takes its case directly to the public whenever possible. As CEO, President and Director of Blackbird Energy, an E&P company focused on the Montney natural gas play in Alberta, Braun described a scenario where Blackbird Energy completed two wells in early 2015 just south of Grand Prairie, Alberta. The company had licensed the well for 8.2 percent hydrogen sulfide in flowback, but it came back well above that at about 24 percent, forcing Blackbird Energy to shut the wells in.

Instead of taking a reactionary approach by waiting for regulators to find problems with Blackbird’s operations, Braun approached government officials to come up with a dispersion model together. As a result, Blackbird’s hydrogen sulfide decreased dramatically and the company was able to continue operations.

“We went and were proactive, then we resolved how to do this completely conscious that we’re operating in the community and how do we even begin to flare a well like this,” Braun said. “That isn’t the government forcing a regulation on us. It’s how we operate in that community and with residents in near proximity.

“I look at it as Blackbird and Garth Braun, we’re stewards of a resource for Alberta, Grand Prairie and Canada,” Braun continued. “The government has basically given us this responsibility to operate with best practices.”

Audience member Clifford A. Fix, President of Green Seal Certified Safety Courses, acknowledged a disconnect between the use of petrochemicals in so many applications and the general public’s overall ignorance of these facts.

With production down for countless energy companies, however, this is a prime opportunity to begin educating the public about the role of petrochemicals in everyone’s lives. McGee said the message not only must be more powerful, but it must be more digestible for those outside of the industry to understand – in the same manner celebrities and filmmakers attack the oil and gas business.

“I think the message that we deliver to the public has its roots in being very complicated and very technical,” McGee said. “Some people would rather listen to a Neil Young message than a message from Carlson that speaks about details that are innovative and fix problems and really don’t create an emotional response. Our managing of the message is difficult by nature, and we certainly have to do a better job at it.”

Along with misleading information, the leaders of the energy industry also will have to adapt to a new government taking the reins in Alberta – and what regulations and changes to operations will come along with that. The New Democratic Party overtook the Progressive Conservatives in the Alberta general election in May 2015, led by Premier Rachel Notley’s defeat of incumbent Jim Prentice. It is the first time the energy friendly Progressive Conservatives are not in control of Alberta’s provincial government in 44 years.

Despite Notley’s campaign promises to review of royalty rates and take government out of the pipeline endorsement business, Carlson believes the energy business will continue to thrive in Alberta.

“Our culture is not going to change because we have a new government,” Carlson said. “If the new government is going to be successful, they’re going to acknowledge that as part of Alberta’s makeup. I believe the government and the industry can have a win/win.”

Environmentalists may oppose all methods of

fracking. As long as technology is working its way

toward better solutions continuously, Carlson

believes the best way to handle the ecological

activists is to keep communication open.

Industry Summit Editorial

safety systems in the Commercial vehicle industryTechnological innovations advance the safety mechanisms on trucks used in the oil and gas industry.

There isn’t any doubt safety is of the utmost importance to any industry heavily reliant on their fleet of commercial vehicles. However, oil and gas companies are especially aware of these sensitive situations considering the volatility of the product their fleets transport and the media coverage incidents attract to their operations.

“Safety obviously is paramount in all commercial transportation operations, but particularly so when you’re hauling highly volatile material and you’re involved in what is a highly visible and tightly regulated industry such as the energy sector,” Lou Smyrlis, Publisher and Editorial Director of the Truck News for Transportation Media, said as he opened the panel discussion entitled “Safety Systems in the Commercial Industry.”

There have been advances in technology and regulation regarding commercial truck safety, and OEMs and safety companies alike are developing solutions to stay in compliance and reduce accidents. For companies operating those fleets, safety’s role in the business model now occupies a more prominent place on the accounting ledger.

“In the last five years, we’ve seen a real shift in thinking where HSE every year seems to take on a greater and greater role in our operations,” said Josh McHaffie, General Manager of Performance Vac & Tank Services Ltd. “Rather than looking at something as a safety expense, we’ve taken to looking at it as an operational investment. This is an investment in our people. This is an investment in not just what makes us money, but what keeps us strong and trucks on the road and keeps our people fed and safe at night.”

Investing in people is of particular importance considering driver error is the No. 1 contributing factor to accidents, , according to Peter Arrigoni, Vocational Fleet Sales Manager for Kenworth Trucks. Arrigoni said in the last 40 years, the number of accidents has decreased by 75 percent. Of those remaining accidents about 33 percent of those involve trucks. However, despite having far more automobile accidents in that time frame, the number of fatalities due to truck accidents is equal to that of cars. Arrigoni also said 75 percent of truck-related fatalities are those who were not in the truck.

Arrigoni, however, said those statistics make it appear truck drivers are to blame for these numbers, but it actually is quite the opposite. He cited National Highway Traffic Safety Administration statistics that found automobile drivers are at fault in 80 percent of accidents involving trucks.

“It’s natural that the progression of safety technology would be to avoiding accidents and injury,” Arrigoni said. “With technology moving as quickly as it does today, we have cost-effective ways of incorporating this technology that could help prevent accidents altogether.”

According to TJ Thomas, Bendix Commercial Vehicle Systems offers a variety of systems in the driver-assistance products that breaking into the active (prevention) and passive (protection) categories. For active products, Bendix offers stability control, which activates breaks in each wheel end to maintain control of the vehicle. Bendix also offers and collision mitigation, which is a radar that scans about 500 feet in front of the vehicle and begins breaking when a collision is detected ahead of the vehicle.

For passive products, Bendix offers tire pressure monitoring for each wheel end and blind spotter, which gives a lane departure warning.

“Both sides of them can provide data that the fleets then can use for either training or investigating,” said Thomas, who serves as Director of Marketing and Customer Solutions for Bendix Commercial Vehicle Systems.

Bill Platt, HSSE Manager for Gibson Energy Inc., said his company’s relies on onboard computer systems on trucks in its fleet in Canada and the United States. These computers collect information on driver violations like hard-breaking and hard accelerations.

Aside from protecting drivers and other motorists by warning truckers of their behaviors, the data collected by these computer systems can be used to train drivers on good habits companywide.

Convincing drivers their work needs to be so closely monitored and documented is not an easy sell. What Platt described as “big brother watching” is really a way

to increase responsible driving methods throughout an entire fleet.

“It’s helped us increase the level of accountability, and it also be able to from an employee discipline standpoint, be able to strike while the iron is hot,” McHaffie said.

For example, through his company’s Geotrack systems, the entire operations and safety team will receive an email within 30 seconds if a driver is traveling 12 percent over the speed limit.

“We’ve been able to do is effectively mitigate by sometimes as simple as picking up a phone to tell someone to slow down,” McHaffie said. “It starts to drive it into the culture that even though you’re [somewhere else], we can see what you’re doing. The big brother thing gets wrapped up in that a lot – and we’re not checking it constantly – but when somebody deviates from safe practice, we want to know about it.”

Not long after implementing Geotrack system in its fleet, Performance Vac & Tank Services began to notice a shift in employees’ attitudes toward safety. It became the norm to maintain the speed limit and drive safely, according to McHaffie, once the platitudes starting rolling in from managers and customers alike.

“That’s when you really started to get that investment,” McHaffie said. “But it all started with that little black box.”

Thomas emphasized the importance of training drivers on how these systems will work. This will prevent a myriad of questions that typically arise when drivers aren’t oriented to the new features their vehicles have.

“If they don’t train, what happens is the questions and comments they get are about unknown system activations, not how to make it better for their operations,” Thomas said.

Thomas also discussed Bendix’s system of coaching drivers on their systems and their uses. One of the company’s products gathers videos of severe events – i.e., hard breaking, or stability control or collision mitigation systems are activated. Whether the videos show near

misses or accidents, the footage can be incorporated into training, meetings and other corporate functions that relate to safety.

“The big deal about it is the videos show something that happened with their trucks, their routes, their loads with their drivers,” Thomas said.

Driver safety and monitoring may be the primary concerns for today’s fleet managers, but advances in autonomous vehicles could make those moot points in the not-so-distant future. In fact, these vehicles are so close to reality, the University of Michigan opened “Mcity,” a test city for autonomous cars, in July 2015.

What once was considered a figment of science fiction is now closer to reality than anyone could have imagined. Arrigoni confirmed that while these vehicles won’t reach the market within the next 10 years, OEMs already are planning for R&D to make autonomous vehicles happen.

“Everybody I assure you is working on it from an OEM standpoint, so you will see it,” Arrigoni said. “The point that we are at right now from an OEM standpoint is, we are taking the technologies that we currently have available and are building a roadmap on how we get from here to there.”

The emergence of the autonomous car does not lie strictly on the shoulders of OEMs, however. Arrigoni reminded the audience that factors like regulation, insurance and public awareness will have to catch up with technology.

It’s infrastructure that needs to be developed not necessarily by the OEM alone, but state and federal governments,” Arrigoni said.

technology spotlight – Water ManagementChanging the Industry One Innovation at a Time.

Mark Stanley remembers $100 oil as well as anybody in the industry. As the summer of 2014 rolled on, it was a time for the industry to focus on producing as much oil as possible with little regard for improving efficiency in operations, especially in terms of water management.

What a difference a year makes. With Brent crude prices at roughly $50 a barrel in the summer of 2015, Stanley now is bombarded with requests for his company’s water management systems as countless potential clients desperately search for ways to stay afloat in the current downturn.

“When oil was at $105 a barrel, no one paid any attention to what I was trying to talk to them about,” Stanley recalled during his technology spotlight presentation on the need for water management in fracking operations. “Why? Too busy pumping as much as we possibly can down the pipeline because we’re making so much money, it doesn’t make any difference.”

The attitude that is pervasive throughout the oil and gas industry keeps decision-makers from looking at the big picture, according to Stanley. He said when commodity markets take a turn for the worse like they did at the end of summer 2014, it often is too late to put efficient practices in place.

“As an industry, we are not innovative or creative at all until we become down to survival time, and that’s not when we should be doing these types of things,” Stanley said. “We don’t think about what we need to do longer term until we get into another downturn. Now, all of a sudden my phone and email blows up and people say, ‘Hey, remember when you said you could save us something and you’ve got some new innovations coming? What can you do?’

With 40 years of experience in the energy industry ranging from the refining sector to specialty chemicals. He finally launched Themark Corporation to focus on water management systems, including Hydro-pod, which reduces the demand for water as a natural resource by cleaning it for reuse in natural gas exploration. Themark Corporation also produces H2Stopper, which eliminates methane gas filtering through water supplies, and PurHeat, which is an organic ice-melting product.

Water management systems have become increasingly important as the amount of water required for frack jobs has steadily risen, according to Stanley. In fact, he said 85 percent of what is pumped in the world every day on average is water. A majority of this water is going down saltwater disposal wells, but Stanley believes there are better solutions.

“That’s not the right place for it to go,” he said. “We as an industry need to figure out what we want to do.”

Stanley said the attitude toward water in Canada is not one of urgency, with many operators believing there is plenty of freshwater to continue business as usual. That point of view could be dangerous.

“That’s not the right idea – the right idea is you have lots of water, but you need it for lots of different things,” Stanley said. “And now you’re in the middle of a drought in some areas.”

The technology does exist to alleviate some of the demand for freshwater, Stanley stated. One such solution is to recycle produced water to remove all contaminants that come with frack flowback so water can be gelled as high as 200,000 parts of chlorides.

“We actually have the technology available to do a lot of the things we’ve been talking about,” Stanley said. “They just need to get better publicized and out there.”

Oman has caught on to the need for better water management systems, and Stanley has spent a great deal of time working in the nation to improve BP’s fracking operations. He said water is so scarce in Oman, BP had to wait between seven to 10 days just to have enough freshwater to frack. With 400 wells in Oman, that simply wasn’t an option for BP.

The government of Oman also has adopted these technologies for a myriad of applications, including improving drinking water and irrigating fields for food production.

Between this and China’s recent mandate that requires produced water to be recycled as potable or near potable, Stanley admitted the North American oil and gas industry

Oil & Gas Awards 2015 37

speaker: Mark Stanley, CEO, Themark Corporation

has fallen behind water management trends. However, if the business doesn’t solve the issue itself, he foresees regulations forcing the issue.

“If we don’t do it as an industry and drive it ourselves, we’ll be legislated into it,” Stanley said. “And many times, you do not want to deal with the results of what you’re going to be legislated into. So we have to get out in front.”

However, Stanley admitted comparing international regulatory procedures to North American policies can prove quite different. Oftentimes when dealing with other nations, there aren’t a myriad of rules and regulations that change by individual states and provinces like in the United States and Canada, respectively. This is another reason Stanley believes the North American oil and gas industry must take water management into its own hands.

“Again, as an industry, we need to be out in front, not lagging behind like we have,” Stanley said.

Stanley said the attitude toward water in Canada is not one of urgency, with many operators believing there is plenty of freshwater to continue business as usual. That point of view could be dangerous. Click here

Judges’ Comments:

When considering this category I felt that McMillan-McGee showed true innovation in tackling environmental remediation issues. To be able to employ a technology that would in essence separate contaminants from soil which could be collected and removed rather than stripping areas of their natural soils and backfilling is quite progressive. Anyone that has had experience in an environmental clean up will recognize that finding suitable soil to backfill can be a huge challenge and if one could use a technology to clean the soil that is there rather than dumping it somewhere else is truly a technological advancement for the oil and gas industry.

Industry Summit Editorial

Building Meaningful relationship in aboriginal Business engagement; a Perspective and Case study. As energy development continues at a breakneck pace on and around aboriginal lands, corporations must review their corporate social responsibility policies.

As Canada’s energy industry grows by leaps and bounds throughout the nation’s resource-rich regions, there are many changes its citizens are experiencing firsthand. No swath of the population is dealing with more nuanced adjustments like the aboriginal peoples of Canada’s First Nations and Inuit populations, which own mineral rights to land that can give their communities the economic boost needed to change the fortunes of future generations for years.

“Things are changing, and the world around [aboriginal peoples] are changing,” said John Fleming, Vice President of Business Development for Canada North Camps and its indigenous business arm, Tansi Business Development Group. “There are communities who want to develop and have aspirations like we all do – to have a better life for their kids and have a better life for their communities.”

In his keynote presentation entitled “Building Meaningful Relationships in Aboriginal Business,” Fleming – a member of Labrador Inuit Association – discussed the need for communication and cultural understanding between aboriginal peoples and energy corporations throughout Canada.

Considering the vast resources under aboriginal control across the nation, corporations would be well-served to adhere to the traditions and cultural mores of the First Nations and Inuit. According to Fleming, as of 2009, the First Nations have a growing land base that owns or controls 15 million hectares of land, and the Inuit owns or controls over 45 million hectares of land. More importantly, there are more than $315 billion in energy projects identified on or near aboriginal communities in Canada.

“There are exciting opportunities awaiting people willing to get on board the adventure of working with First Nations communities,” Fleming said. “And there is definitely a business development case that is profitable and works both ways for the communities and the companies and the industrial components who choose to partner there.”

Economic development is by far the most important aspect aboriginal communities consider when choosing to partner with energy companies on oil and gas projects

Oil & Gas Awards 2015 47

speakers: John Fleming, VP, Business Development, Canada North Camps / Tansi Group

on their lands, according to Fleming. He has found that First Nations who successfully grow their influence in the energy industry are paying close attention to the economic development of their communities.

However, the monetary aspect of these projects is hardly the only factor aboriginal peoples consider when attempting to partner with energy companies for projects on their lands.

First off, Fleming said, communities will evaluate the land and environment where potential projects are slated to take place.

Also, communities consider the amount of social investment corporations will make in their people. This can be done in a variety of ways, including training and recruitment of local labor, hiring local contractors and providing support for youth programs.

“Whenever I am speaking to our partners, and we talk to our chiefs and business development partners who work with the communities we work with, I’m very excited that most communities have appointed somebody to the role of representative who evaluates relationships with companies coming to work in their area,” Fleming said.

In his current role, Fleming has served in this advisory capacity for a number of energy projects. Recently, he helped the Heart Lake First Nation, led by Chief Morris Monias, work through a contentious situation with a pending energy project encroaching on sacred ground.

According to Fleming, while working as a regulatory technician for Heart Lake, he partook in general project overview for any and all business taking place in or near the reservation. He received a call one morning to alert him to trees coming down all around the reserve within 200 meters of Heart Lake.

He quickly reached out to the forest company to cease operations until he and the nation could conduct a thorough traditional land use study on how the community used the land in order to let consultants for various companies know what to avoid when attempting to conduct their business.

What Fleming and his colleagues discovered was a vast array of traditional uses of the land consultants hadn’t considered in the past. For example, there were areas where the community gathers, registered trap lines established to trap animals, hunting places, places to harvest medicine, and some people still relied heavily on the waters of Heart Lake for their daily life activities.

“It was very important to do this,” Fleming said. “When a company comes and says, ‘If I want to do this in this land area, what do we do in this land area?’”

Fleming also determined digitizing this information would best serve Heart Lake Nation and corporations interested in conducting business in this region. The immediate impact of this study helped Heart Lake Nation negotiate some terms of the work to be conducted near the lake itself. Fleming said the nation was able to shave 13 kilometers of seismic activity away from the lakes, which makes the company’s impact almost unnoticeable.

“When you go there and visit today, you wouldn’t know that a seismic program happened there when you’re on the lake enjoying it,” Fleming said. “We said, ‘Here’s how we live, and there’s what you want to do, and how can we move this forward to protect the community’s interest?’ It was a very valuable exercise.”

Fleming admits Monias taught him a valuable lesson throughout this process – Inuit and First Nations peoples still want to live off the land, and it can be exciting if aboriginal peoples and the energy industry can learn to work together.

“I believe success is when companies that manage environmental, social and governance risk will most effectively tangible deliver better risk adjusted financial performance than their peers,” Fleming said. “There are communities out there aspiring to keep up and want in the energy sector.”

Industry Summit Editorial

When Rachel Notley’s New Democratic Party (NDP) toppled the Progressive Conservative (PC) government in May 2015, it sent shockwaves through Alberta politics. The party that ruled the province for 44 years had been shown the door, and oil and gas industry has been bracing for a fight with the NDP since Notley unveiled her campaign platform, which targeted the energy industry in a number of ways.

The most potentially costly campaign promises Notley made involve royalty reviews, stricter environmental efforts, greater efforts to upgrade and refine bitumen in the province and restructuring the Alberta Energy Regulator. Corporate taxes already have been raised from 10 to 12 percent, with another increase possible.

“She promised greater government accountability to fight cost, to scrap the cost cuts that were planned by the previous guys, and to squeeze corporations and the wealthy to help make up for the budget shortfall resulting from low oil prices,” Moderator Claudia Cattaneo, Western Business Columnist for the National Post, said during opening remarks of “New Government, New Business?” panel discussion. “There’s a lot of anxiety in the markets about what is coming. But many also welcome the end of the PC era and its tight relationship with industry.”

Barry Cooper did not mince his words when it came to the negative affects the NDP victory meant for the oil and gas industry. He has spent the months since Notley’s victory blaming the oil and gas industry decision-makers for helping usher in a new wave leadership that has energy in its sights.

In his column for the Calgary Herald on May 13, 2015, he wrote about oil industry’s blind support of PC politics despite the signs that the party wouldn’t survive against either NDP or Wildrose. Instead of throwing support behind a like-minded party like Wildrose, oil attempted to absorb them into the PC. Obviously, it didn’t work, and Cooper has made it known whose fault it is.

“Since I think the oil industry is chiefly responsible, I want to say thank you very much gentlemen and ladies for giving

me more taxes,” Cooper told the audience at the panel discussion. “NDP governments have never been good for business in the history of the universe, and I don’t think it is going to happen in Alberta, either.”

He doesn’t foresee the royalty review becoming much of an issue because currently royalties on conventional oil are relatively high compared to Saskatchewan and Texas. His biggest concern, however, is how Notley is staffing her energy advisors. Cooper has written about Graham Mitchell, a well-known anti-oil activist and the new NDP Energy Minister and chief of staff Brian Topp, who is on the record against fossil fuel cars.

“She has recruited a bunch of people from outside the province who are what I would call ‘deep green environmental radicals,’” Cooper said. “These people are not there to steward the industry of this province. They are serious environmentalists and I think we’re going to see that over the next several months.”

Despite the NDP’s reputation for radical social agendas throughout Canada, Dr. Wenran Jiang, Research Chair at the University of Alberta, doesn’t foresee such sweeping changes occurring with this government in Alberta. Now Alberta will have to see if Notley will enact this type of “social engineering,” as Jiang calls it, in Albertan politics. Based on her first few weeks in office, he doesn’t believe that will happen against the oil and gas industry, especially since she specifically reached out to the energy sector in her victory speech.

“To Alberta’s job creators, great and small – in the energy sector and in every sector – our government will be a good partner with you to grow our economy and to secure a more prosperous future for every Albertan in every community,” Notley said on election night. “Together, we need to start down the road to a diversified and resilient economy, to end the boom and bust roller coaster ride we’ve been on for far too long.”

Jiang took those words as a good sign that the NDP will be willing to work with energy despite the initiatives aimed at the industry in the next few months. Considering 1/3rd of

new government, new Business? As the New Democratic Party takes over Albertan politics, the oil and gas industry braces for more change in an already dire period for the energy sector.

Alberta’s government’s revenue still must come from the energy industry, according to Jiang, NDP has no choice but to play nice with oil and gas.

“Basically, 1/3rd of our social programs that NDP emphasized so much – healthcare, education – will be generated by energy revenue,” Jiang said. “I think Rachel Notley knows that, and the issue now is how she’s going to do the royalty reviews in a manner that is consultative with the energy industry while satisfying the traditional base.”

Notley’s energy policy can have a far-reaching effect on U.S./Canada business relations, as well. Notley stated the provincial government no longer will lobby on behalf of Transcanada for the Keystone XL pipeline.

“The immediate aftermath of the election is that south of the border, it depends on who you talk to,” Jiang said. “The environmentalists and those who are campaigning against the Keystone XL pipeline are celebrating.”

The United States is not the only international trade partner closely watching what the NDP has in store for the Alberta energy industry. Jiang said about 50 percent of the Alberta oil industry is funded by foreign investment.

China plays a major role in province, but is not as involved in provincial politics like the United States. However, some investors already have begun reining in their spending while others are selling their oil sands assets.

“They just say, ‘Let’s wait and see,’” Jiang said. “They’re watching us very closely on the royalty review, the potential corporate tax changes.”

Even before the new government was elected in Alberta, Jiang said he thinks the province is entering a phase of consolidation in terms of spending from China and other Asian nations. That doesn’t mean the faucet will be completely turned off, thought. He expects Asian investor to continue funding existing operations, but they will not be investing in new ventures. For example, Synopec has invested more than $10 billion in a number of projects since 2005, according to Jiang, and the bulk of their corporate executives are Canadian.

“Even though there is no new money pouring in to do another merger and acquisition, they have money on the ground,” Jiang said. “They are pouring in billions of additional dollars to continue the operations. The slowdown has more to do with the volatility of oil prices now.”

The energy sector already had a difficult year or so since the price of a barrel of oil started plummeting in the fall of 2014. According to Duane Bratt, Ph.D., Department Chair of the Department of Policy Studies at Mount Royal University in Calgary, acclimating to a new government taking aim at the energy industry while trying to stay afloat in a volatile commodity pricing period will test the industry like never before.

“When the price of oil drops $50 in six months, and low natural gas prices for several years, and all of a sudden you’ve got a new government that you oppose and don’t even know who people are and start lining up a laundry list and each item is aimed at you,” Bratt said. “Each one of those would be a clash. When you put them together, they look like the villain.”

Industry Summit Editorial

Longtime veterans of the oil and gas industry fully understand the ups and downs of commodity prices, yet the energy sector is still shell-shocked by the steep decline of the price of a barrel of oil over the last six months. The question at the forefront of executives’ minds throughout the industry now is how long it will take before prices bounce back, or if that is even a possibility.

“We’re now seven months into this downturn, and oil prices remain soft, drilling activity and investment has slowed down, and we keep being warned that the future will be a lot more volatile,” Moderator Claudia Cattaneo, Western Business Columnist for the National Post.

As Vice President of Finance for Calfrac Well Services, one of the top oilfield companies in North America, Mike Olinek has seen the oil and gas industry through the ups and downs of the cyclical market. However, he said this is one of the worst downturns he has experienced in his career, and his fellow managers at Calfrac have compared this rough patch to the crisis they encountered in 1986.

“I think for us, this downturn is more severe than some of the past downturns that we’ve seen,” Olinek said. “The drivers of our volatility today are much different than our last downturn in 2009. That was a worldwide financial crisis. This one is energy-focused. There’s a wide demand balance issue we have, and a competitive market share fight between OPEC and North America, and those factors really bring into our thoughts that crude oil prices are here to stay at this level for the foreseeable future.”

One reason oil prices have become so volatile – and may remain that way for the foreseeable future – is because of the way oil is traded today. According to Ranko Berich, Head of Market Analysis for Monex Europe, oil has become less of a commodity among traders and more of a financial asset based on sentiment and global macroeconomic implications.

“That has some very interesting implications in terms of how volatile it can be because financial assets can change in value very, very quickly,” Berich said. “I think that’s one of the things that’s been contributing to how rapidly the downward correction we have seen in crude oil in the last nine months or so.”

Considering the Canadian dollar once was considered a “petrol currency,” as Cattaneo described it, one might assume soft oil prices would weaken the Canadian dollar. However, Berich confirmed there is no evidence showing such a correlation at this point.

“When we talk about the Canadian dollar, we usually talk about the dollar/CAD exchange rate,” he said. “When you look at the U.S. dollar in particular, we’ve had an increasingly strong inverse correlation manifest itself between crude oil price and the U.S. dollar. That’s linked quite clearly with the financialization of crude oil.

“In terms of the Canadian dollar, crude oil still does represent a very large portion of Canada’s trade, so I think when looking at dollar/CAD, the correlation is there to stay as far as I’m concerned,” Berich added.

a volatile Future for Canadian importers and exportersDespite the cyclical nature of the oil industry, executives aren’t certain when prices will recover from the latest downturn – or if they will recover at all.

Peter Kujawinski, Consul General of the United States of America

The United States has taken a huge step forward as a worldwide energy producer due to advances in hydraulic fracturing and horizontal drilling. However, that doesn’t mean U.S. investors are turning away entirely from the Canadian oil and gas industry. Peter Kujawinski, Consul General of the United States for Alberta, said Canada’s history of stability and good relations with the United States will keep the nation at the forefront of American investors’ minds for decades to come.

“My personal sense is that Canada and Alberta specifically remains incredibly attractive to U.S. investment,” Kujawinski said. “Especially for some of these private equity firms, I think there’s actually been an increase in interest over the last couple months because of the strength of the U.S. dollar and there has been a downturn, so people see a buying opportunity.”

In the long term, Kujawinski admitted there is a sense of concern regarding the capital required to operate in the Canadian oil sands. However, those concerns are often trumped by the ease of access and friendly business relationship between the United States and Canada, he said.

“I think long term, there are always going to be concerns about the high-cost nature of many of the plays here,” Kujawinski said. “But at the same time, given Canada’s proximity to the United States and share very much the same values and also very much the same level of investment capital, I think Canada is going to remain a very attractive place for U.S. investment.”

Olinek has to hope investors remain bullish on the oil and gas industry. The recent election of the New Democratic Party (NDP) – led by new Premier Rachel Notley – has investors in a holding pattern to see if the new government will live up to campaign promises to raise corporate taxes, review royalties policy and get out of the business of endorsing pipeline deals with the United States.

“One of the things our customers are probably doing is taking a wait-and-see approach with respect to the new NDP government, what structural changes are going to happen in the royalty regime, and see how that impacts

them as a business before they go forward,” Olinek said. “There are certain businesses in western Canada that I think are here for the long term and they’re continuing to follow those long-term plans, but others are on the sidelines waiting and seeing as things move forward.”

One way the United States can help potentially stabilize commodity prices is by lifting its ban on crude exports. A bill to lift the ban passed a U.S. Senate committee in August 2015, but Kujawinski wasn’t sure if and when the ban would be lifted.

“We’re ultimately a democracy, and when enough companies, individuals and state-level officials say, ‘This doesn’t make sense anymore,’ is usually when change is going to happen,” Kujawinski said. “In terms of when that is going to happen, will it happen during this administration or the beginning of the next one, I think there is so many moving parts to that, not least the fact this requires a legislative fix.”

Kujawinski also said climate change will be a major focus of the debate regarding lifting the ban, which could be a major sticking point for Democrats and Republicans.

Whenever the debate takes place, it couldn’t be soon enough according to countless economists who theorize the addition of U.S. crude oil to the worldwide supply would help stabilize prices of oil. Berich falls into this category, but also cautions that U.S. consumption of oil on its own is enough to move the needle on global commodity prices.

“The global oil market certainly would function better if the export ban was removed, but I also think it is important to take note that demand in America for energy is really the epicenter of global energy demand,” Berich said. “I think the most interest aspect of the possibility of the ban being removed is the possibilities it would open up for investment in terms of even larger than what we’ve seen in last five years of expanding North American production even further.”

Quinn Holtby is the Founder, Owner and Chief Executive Officer of Katch Kan Limited, a company that has an impressive track record of successful innovation in helping the world’s oil and gas industry become measurably safer and more environmentally friendly.

Quinn Holtby began working on drilling rigs in the late 1970’s as a roughneck. He quickly worked his way up to a drilling position and drilled for several years on a wide variety of rigs. In 1986, after witnessing many near fatal accidents, mostly as a result of the slippery work conditions due to uncontrolled fluid discharge on the drill floor, Quinn decided to do something about it. Giving up a successful career in drilling, he decided to pursue his ideas of minimizing accidents on the drill floor while at the same time protecting the environment. Quinn realized that he would have to learn about sales if he was to succeed at bringing his dream to reality. This being the case, he chose to explore real estate sales as the medium to hone his skills. Quinn founded Katch Kan™ in 1994 after eight arduous years of successful real estate sales, while in his spare time studying

polymers, the elements of business and career success, and developing his first product, the Kelly Kan™. Since that time, Quinn has pioneered - and continues to pioneer - an extensive array of proven, leading edge products and services that make it easy to minimize environmental footprint and maximize rig safety. Katch Kan™ is based on a commitment to sustainable development, by protecting and preserving the land and water where the upstream oil and gas industry operates. Industry Summit Editorial

Canada has culled a reputation for safe operations in the oil and gas industry as compared to a number of other energy-producing nations in the world. However, when money is tight as it is today with soft commodity prices, the true challenge is to maintain that dedication to safety with less capital to spend.

“In operations both here and internationally, the Canadian marketplace seems to take health and safety and adherence to those regulations very seriously,” Moderator Ben Preston, Vice President of Marsh & McLennan Companies, said as he opened the health and safety best practices panel discussion. “But as we all know sitting in the room here watching the commodity prices swing somewhat wildly over the last little while, they are down quite significantly from this time a year ago.”

Ryan Groot, HSE Manager for Murphy Oil, admitted it can be tempting for companies to skimp on safety spending in dire times like these, but that is a mistake. Oftentimes, operators hope to accomplish more production with less resources for faster turnaround times during down times, so safety becomes more important than ever.

“The fundamentals of safety should remain the same whether you’re at $2 a barrel or $200 a barrel because quite frankly when looking at fundamentals of safety, it’s really about the ground level, the communication you have with those people,” Groot said. “And that shouldn’t change no matter if you’re making money or not.”

In fact, Ephimios “George” Sgouromitis, Corporate Manager HSS&E for Gibson Energy Inc., said companies who cut back on their safety expenditures during rough times aren’t well suited to survive the downturn. He doesn’t expect such companies to be in business once prices return to a sustainable level.

“You can see the ‘A’ customers – they are not reducing that spend,” Sgouromitis said. “The ‘B’ and ‘C’ companies – whether they be majors or suppliers to us – you can see them backing off or falling out of the industry. The downturn is terrible, but it’s a definite leveling of the playing field when it comes to the companies that are

committed and engaged. If they’re not around in the next five years, that’s probably a good thing.”

Instead of pulling back resources for HSE needs, Sgouromitis suggested this down cycle in the oil and gas economy is the perfect time to perfect safety operations within the energy sector. At Gibson, the company has taken the opportunity to make its business more streamlined and more competent with structured, formal training, enhanced safety meetings, one-on-ones and engagement of field workers by upper management.

“With the downturn, yes, there is losses of jobs and there is very tough financial times, but it’s given us the chance to high-grade what we really want to do,” Sgouromitis said. “It gives you an opportunity to take that breath, worry about where the economy is going, but if you’re on the right track, you’ll be chasing those opportunities you didn’t have time for in the last five years.”

Murphy Oil had its emergency preparedness put to the test in March 2015 when one of the company’s pipelines burst, spilling 17,000 barrels of condensate at its Seal heavy oil site in northern Alberta, according to the CBC. Fortunately, no one was injured, and the biggest incident in company history allowed Murphy Oil to truly assess its emergency response plan.

“The response to that was a real learning experience,” Groot said. “We quickly learned that a lot of the emergency response training that we’d done – and even some of the ICS training that we’d done – didn’t prepare us for a 44-day emergency response.”

After the spill was contained, Murphy Oil reviewed its response to the incident. Some things like turnover to a response team and incident commander and making sure employees used the right tools while following established protocols for such situations could have been better.

In the field, Murphy Oil reviewed the competency within its pipeline operations.

“We’re really good at the field side, and we’re really good at the facility side, but the pipeline side was a bit lacking,”

health and safety Best PracticesLow commodity prices and a lack of activity has created plenty of opportunities for oil and gas companies to ramp up their HSE operations.

Regulations at the local, provincial and federal levels mandate companies must operate at certain minimum requirements for HSE, but the leaders in safety tend to rise above and beyond those standards, according to Leo Sullivan, Account Manager for Total Safety. For example, his company relies on a tool called Smart Equipment to determine whether equipment has been calibrated and maintained properly before it is put into use. Total Safety also meets with HSE managers at the end of each month for inspection to ensure clients are above and beyond regulatory requirements.

“Working with our clients, especially here in Fort McMurray, we’ve gone beyond the required regulations in terms of the inspections and the calibration and repairs for equipment on-site,” Sullivan said.

Just when a company believes it is on top of the regulations specific to its operations, new mandates can be added, or existing mandates could change. According to Bradley Huber, General Manager HSE for Trinidad Drilling, the major players in the oil and gas industry tend to set the standard that regulation eventually emulates.

Majors like Shell and Chevron, according to Sgouromitis, regularly audit their subcontractors against their own safety standards. Huber cited registries as one private safety practice that was eventually picked up as a governmental regulation.

“I think the larger companies definitely drive the standards, and legislation will follow suit in time,” Huber said. “The big companies do drive the standard up. You need to meet those minimum requirements of the company – which typically could exceed in many cases legislation – if you want to work for them. By bridging all that together, you’re definitely going to be exceeding the legislation.”

Maintaining a strong HSE culture is difficult enough, but trying to meld two philosophies after a merger or acquisition poses many additional challenges. Huber said as long as the new company’s management insists on keeping safety at the forefront of operations, this transition can be easily navigated.

“Don’t get so stuck on ‘My way is the best way’ because that’s a pretty ignorant way to look at safety,” Huber said. “There is sometimes better ways to do things. There’s a lot of smart people out there.”

No matter the situation, safety should be driven down from the highest levels of executive management to nurture a companywide acceptance of safe operations as much as possible. That is why more safety managers are being called into executive board rooms these days to ensure projects have HSE built directly into the plans, according to Sgouromitis. This is a recent phenomenon that will see safety’s role grow for years to come.

“I’m seeing more and more where the safety function actually has a seat at the table – historically it was the engineering groups,” Sgouromitis said. “We’re moving forward in Canada, but definitely there has to be a seat at the table with a respected voice saying that there has to be a safety component into the flow of how the process works, and we’re getting to that.”

Big Guns has demonstrated an innovative quality that saw them branch out into a new business line that leveraged their existing skills yet filled a new niche for its clients. Big Guns has redesigned itself as the needs of the industry has changed as is exemplified by its geocontainment business. Understanding the movement and preventing unwanted migration of injected fluid into reservoirs helps reduce negative environmental impacts and safety concerns.

Calgary-based Big Guns Energy Services, Inc. (BGES) provides integrated services related to geocontainment testing and analysis. The need for geocontainment stems from the fact that many oil and gas projects involve the injection of steam, water or other fluids into a reservoir at high pressure in order to mobilize and recover the heavy oil or bitumen.

Rock layers directly above (called caprock) and below these reservoirs act as a seal, so it’s essential for them to have sufficient integrity to withstand injection pressures. Conducting such analysis isn’t easy: Accurate input data is essential, and it depends on successful execution of a number of steps, not in a lab, but the harsh oil-field environment, where the temperature can drop to –40 degrees Celsius. BGES’ proprietary approach to assessing

and mitigating caprock integrity has so significantly contributed to technological advancement in the field, its paper, “Practical Approach to Caprock Analysis,” has been selected for publication at three major technical conferences in 2015. And, the company has prospered, experiencing solid double-digit revenue growth over the past three years—even during the recent downturn in oil prices over the past eight months.

Oil & Gas Awards 2015 76

Industry Summit Editorial

Corporate social responsibilityThere is no one way to earn the social license to operate, but oil and gas company must make efforts to engage the public in a positive manner.

The energy sector must adhere to countless local, provincial and federal regulations to conduct their operations. However, even if projects receive pass mandates with flying colors, oil and gas businesses now must earn the ever-elusive “social license to operate” from residents of the communities where they operate or face a wave of backlash that will make working near impossible.

“CSR [corporate social responsibility] can mean something different to every company, but it is fundamentally critical to the success of just about every operation – and not just the energy sector,” Moderator Hilary McMeekin, Senior Account Director with Edelman, said as she opened the Corporate Social Responsibility panel discussion. “The need for a company to build stronger relationships, build their credibility, build their reputation is more fundamental today than it ever has been.”

McMeekin cited troubling results from the 2015 Edelman Trust Barometer, a comprehensive study on consumer trust in various industries which Edelman launched 15 years ago. The annual study includes an online survey of 33,000 respondents in 37 nations to gauge their trust in the four institutions of society – government, media, business and nongovernmental organizations (NGOs).

The surprising result in the 2015 study was that all four institutions experienced a decline in trust for the first time in the same year. McMeekin said it was common to see a seesaw effect among the various institutions, but NGOs typically held their position as a trusted institution because, according to McMeekin, people don’t question their motives. That changed in 2015 as trust in NGOs dropped for the first time in the study’s history.

The results of the Trust Barometer study are especially significant for the energy sector, which is typically in a “trust deficit position,” according to McMeekin. The 2015 study found the renewable/clean tech subsector most trusted, although that level declined two points to 68 percent. The nuclear subsector remained the least trusted at 41 percent. Natural gas held steady at 57 percent – second-most trusted in energy. Oil dropped a point to 49 percent this year.

“We’re one of the leading industries that’s suffering from a trust point of view, we being the oil and gas industry,” McMeekin said. “When you’re in this position, it is even more critical that you act responsibly and you communicate responsibly about it. It’s not enough you’re doing it – you have to tell people you’re doing it.

Thomas Miller works for a company led by a man leading the industry’s charge to combat misinformation about fracking and other negative aspects of the oil and gas industry. Breitling Energy CEO Chris Faulkner can be seen on television, read in magazines and found on social media proclaiming the benefits of fracking in an attempt to drown out the noise made by environmentalists.

“Our social responsibility is, we feel, to the industry and to the public, to try to inform them and try to negate the emotional mistruths that the environmentalist movement continues to offer,” said Miller, who serves as Vice President of Communications for Breitling Energy. “And they are beating us at our game beyond measure.”

Faulkner is prolific in his attempts to get the truth out about fracking as the self-proclaimed “frack master.” Along with his regular media appearances, Faulkner has written a book, produced a movie and is active on social media.

Staying active on the Internet is most important, of course. Edelman’s Trust Barometer study showed for the first time, social media is more trusted than owned media.

“If you know anybody who does SEO, a lot of them just crawled out from under a rock,” Miller said. “And if you’re good at SEO, you are now the most credible source out there.”

Executives like Fred Hutchings, Senior Vice President of Maxxam Analytics, admitted he is one of those leaders who used to roll his eyes and the concept of corporate responsibility. He worked ethically by adhering corporate tax law and he followed regulations, assuming that was enough.

That simply isn’t the case today, and Hutchings has had the epiphany many of his colleagues experienced. Aside from gaining the public’s trust that Maxxam Analytics will operate responsibly, Hutchings said his company uses CSR

Oil & Gas Awards 2015 77

to engage employees by doing something meaningful beyond the confines of the work environment.

“Employees look for us to do that almost for reassurance that they’re working for the right company,” Hutchings said. “It isn’t just about giving something back to the community, but it’s really about how you can use it as an internal tool to motivate and engage employees.”

One of the more visible ways Maxxam Analytics engaged employees in its CSR efforts was during relief efforts for the Calgary floods in 2013. The company shut down its entire Calgary operation – about 175 employees – to volunteer at four locations. Maxxam Analytics also rented a bus to transport some of its Edmonton-based employees to participate who wanted to volunteer, as well.

“That was a really interesting experience for us, and it was one of the most impactful in terms of our CSR program, yet it was such a positive experience for our employees,” Hutchings said.

In order to spread the word and monitor the effectiveness of Maxxam Analytics’ volunteer efforts, the company has a ticker on its website that counts the number of volunteer days and hours its employees have logged.

“We have a lot of different measurement tools because we’re always asking ourselves, ‘Are we achieving the goals we seek, and is it meaningful? Are we actually accomplishing something?’” Hutchings said. “I believe whatever it is you decide to do, measurement is the key to make sure it actually gets done.”

While the executives of energy-producing companies on the Corporate Social Responsibility panel offered their experiences on what they have attempted to do to gain public trust for the oil and gas industry, Tammy Charland-McLaughlin described what certain communities seek when energy firms come into their regions. As the Vice President of Operations of Primco Dene, a wholly owned company of Cold Lake First Nations, Charland-McLaughlin helps indigenous peoples take advantage of opportunities in oil sands development in Northern Alberta. The company has over 800 employees, with the majority being

aboriginal from 100 different communities across Alberta, Saskatchewan and British Columbia.

Charland-McLaughlin said her company looks at three models for CSR from energy firms interested in working on and/or near traditional aboriginal lands. The first is employment and indigenous partnership with neighboring First Nations or indigenous community. The second is culture and community development. The third component is environment, which often involves training potential operators in the traditional and cultural uses land and certain species of vegetation represents for aboriginal people.

Employment is far and away the top priority for Primco Dene. The company is one of the largest aboriginal employers in Canada and has maintained an average of over 80 percent aboriginal employment for the last 16 years while peaking at 93 percent in some years.

Charland-McLaughlin credited Chief Jim Boucher, who has served as chief of the Fort McKay First Nation for 23 of the past 27 years, for helping stakeholder consultation become legislation. She said this is the main reason Canada’s indigenous people are so involved in and fairly financially compensated for energy projects in and around their lands.

“In order for that to happen, it really created a lot of opportunity and economic benefit for indigenous corporations not only in Alberta, but right across Canada, to become a player in the oil and gas industries,” Charland-McLaughlin said.

It also allows customers to monitor progress in real time.

Dresser-Rand’s LNGo technology is considered to be a significant contribution to the recovery of stranded and associated gas, which is currently being flared or left in the ground. The economics and approval processes of building pipelines to recover gas reserves often don’t support the tie-in of such gas reserves and the distributed LNG technology developed by Dresser-Rand will provide a solution in some of those cases. The portable nature of their technology will reduce deployment times and reduce flaring and emissions thus improving the environmental footprint. The technology will have both economic and environmental impacts on gas recovery.

Galloway are certainly a strong contender who put a lot of emphasis on their environmental achievements, something to be proud of. Their environmental commitment and a TRIF below 1 (0.97), shows their commitment to Environmental Stewardship and Health and Safety.

Safety records continuously improving. Environmentally conscious above all others. Diverse yet focused on customer demands (End product as well as timeline).

An accessible solution that enables steering of multiple wells at the touch of a button. Proven cost savings and an increase to productivity. The sale of the software license, training and on-going support in a fixed rate is commendable and shows an understanding of client needs and on-going support.

As a petroleum engineer, accuracy of well drill location is key. Wellbore control of trajectory is important for well maintenance and consistent delivery of formation fluids/gases.

Goulet Trucking has a very comprehensive health and safety program in place that has allowed them to operate with statistics below the industry average. Goulet has a modern fleet of over 125 units and customer testimonials to support their work and their safety record.

Goulet have proven successes over 30 years, with great growth and a superb health and safety record.

Green Seal Safety is a small training company that has an obvious passion for the work they do and the initiatives that they are involved in. There were a few highlights that come to mind from this submission: 1.) 4 employees have trained over 24,000 people. 2.) Training helps with the rehab of inmates at a correctional facility.

Company is persistent on making a change in the world of safety through education. Very good feedback from students. Courses appear to be well thought out and packaged and well received by students. Offers a wide array of safety training.

Comprehensive and detailed submission that excellently underpins the contributions of the company to the industry, their clients, and overall, water management best practices.

I found the case study analysis particularly interesting and insightful. Significant successful projects across Canada deserve the recognition.

IPAC had a great submission, it covered all the criteria. Some of the highlights that impressed me were: 1.) Long time employees, IPAC spoke highly of the people and their contributions to the company’s success. 2.) Significant improvement in their Safety Management System. TRIF of 4/8 on 2008 to 1.5 current. Additionally, they have gone 2 million man-hours with no LTI’s. 3.) The PCB Soil remediation project was very impressive and showed their commitment to Environmental Stewardship.

The development of the VIRO tank will result in improvements in both safety and environmental impact in oil operations. The horizontal two tank system is fully contained and allows oil to be separated from water and sand in a fully contained system. It is easily transported and set up which improves deployment time and economics. Other improvements such as isolating the fire tube will also improve safety. The VIRO tank system is a significant contribution in improving handling of volatile oil production.

A management team with the technical know how and a leading equity investor to develop a significant asset base that is both prolific and opportunity for further development.

Established core area. Company’s major transaction. Liquid rich asset – resource play based. Underdeveloped land to optimize. History of high production rates within the Bighorn area.

I love the story and the innovation. The company has been able to grow into international markets because the product creates value in the work environment and also the bottom line.

The founder of Katch Kan observed a deficiency that created an unsafe work environment and he worked to resolve that issue. Katch Kan has been engineered from an idea and carried through to fruition in an industry that hasn’t always been open to change. Katch Kan is used around the world in 60 different countries. The value is proven and well adopted. The reason for the service center around two critical items for the Canadian oil and Gas industry – safety and environmental stewardship.

A complete profile of the company and evaluation of the total cost of risk. Significant local charities contributed to.

Some very complimentary testimonials that denote a practice committed to exceptional service and showing good technical knowledge.

Use of GPS tracking system on loads and innovative pipe storage yard for assisting clients with logistic needs. Integrated company with its own fully licensed LVP mechanical shop. Strong culture of safety. Use of quality and well-maintained equipment ensures reduction of carbon footprints.

Seem to have one of the newest fleet of trucks. Design and operate their fleet to minimize environmental impacts. Seem to emphasize the use of new technology and innovation in logistics management.

I felt the focus on ‘at risk’ communities, disaster preparedness and recovery and their overall approach to CSR was really worth making note on. Overall, they are well established with a clear and comprehensive approach to the provision of risk services.

Some insightful commentary and a deliberate effort to underline what the ‘risk’ management company of the year should be focussing on and it is very well delivered.

Some very notable projects complemented by strong performing dashboards (i.e. N2N). Maintained TRIF of 0 over 13 months with a 1.7 TRIF overall in past year. New fleet of equipment and recycling programs show commitment to environment. Great community involvement where they operate.

Significant expansion acquisitions. Very little lost time due to injuries indicate strong safety programs and policies. Tailgate safety meeting and job reviews done to ensure responsive changes to safety conditions.

Maxxam has established an enviable position as an industry leader in the field of Corporate Social Responsibility. They had established guiding principles for corporate governance, respect for the environment, contributions for the communities, while creating opportunities for their employees, which guides the way they do business. Maxxam is a steward of the environment participating in composting, recycling and car-pooling to name a few. They are constantly coming up with safer and more efficient ways for waste disposal of toxic metals and reductions in acid rinse usage, all designed to lower their environmental footprint.

A small company can have a huge impact in simply being committed to projects within the community that they are in. Corporate social responsibility doesn’t necessarily mean saying the correct things to the public or having large budget that gets funnelled into a community, I believe that little things can have a long lasting positive effect and the gift of time is often more valuable than money especially in our busy lives. Small companies often need to make twice the effort to get involved in community projects and this company has certainly made that effort.

The PROH2O system looks to be an innovative solution for produced water overall and the mobile system, whilst appearing heavy to manoeuvre, seems effective, quick to set up, and easy to operate.

Oreco have developed a whole host of solutions that tackle specific water challenges and their commitment to R&D is commendable. The re-use and filtration stats speak for themselves. Great work.

Strong tool development but required more info on safety or CSR.

Good examples of how to save money by reducing completion times. Development of many proprietary products and services. Involvement in key technology of multi-stage horizontal frac completions.

Appear good, solid and focussed. Will continue to improve with time and additional corporate experience.

A young entrepreneur that understands the needs of his clients and his staff. Has shown fantastic growth since the company’s inception and has documented testimonials to support Pitbull Energy Service’s contribution to the industry.

Primco Dene displays many of the attributes, which are essential for Corporate Social Responsibility. Although a much smaller company than many in this category, Primco Dene exemplifies the core traits of the CSR category, namely community engagement and environmental stewardship. The company was built around employing the Aboriginal community to supply services to the oil and gas industry, which works on the First Nations land. Direct involvement of the community members on projects where they both work and live, creating a livelihood rather than being supported by government funding.

Committed to being part of the group that developed the industry’s first Vacuum Truck Driver training program. This program was developed to ensure safety of Vacuum Truck operators in this complex and potentially very dangerous service.

PVT has experienced substantial growth to the company and maintained exceptional HSE Performance. They have developed and implemented the industry’s first accredited Safety Awareness course for Vac Trucks. An exceptional achievement. PVT has been recognized by several clients through letters of recommendation.

Redcore have made significant contributions to the local charities in the area and are well placed to service their client’s needs. With many well-documented projects listed and impressive records in safety, Redcore have rightly scored well.

Many large-scale projects with major oil companies with quality assurance, quality control programs in place. TRIF 1.76 in 2014, all management trained or certified promotes culture of safety. Significant involvement in Red Deer charity organization. Promotes culture of recycling in the company.

Strong corporate values, previous recognition and overall commitment to the well being of workers stand Redrock apart from the competition in this category.

Incredible growth is testament to the quality of camp and the culture instilled by the President. Redrock offer more than just workforce housing, they provide quality, innovative camps, nourishing food and proper R&R for the workers, this in turn ensures better retention of the workforce which is key.

Overall, the software offers significant streamlining of operations reducing costs, increasing profits and positioning the company to realise a higher number of jobs in the same time frame.

Trimble’s Realworks software allows a streamlined, more accurate method of providing spatial detail of tank design which has historically been done by external measurement and estimation. Proper design of storage tanks is critical for safe and effective operations and this software improves the accuracy and efficiency of that design. The software is cloud-based which allows accurate tracking and more efficient review of tank that reduces costs and improves profits.

The vintriPLANT and vintrilD software allows managing detailed pipe data tracking and inventory in a comprehensive package. The tracking of pipeline data and specifications has historically been a complicated and ineffective process as pipe typically moves between four and five hands before reaching its end use. This cloud-based software allows tracing of the design specifications of pipe that ensures it will be used properly. The software has had international exposure and fills a gap previously uncovered.

Very good info, strong synergies and long-term vision in acquisition.

It’s not always easy for a smaller cap company to pull off some large-scale A&D projects but Whitecap has done it and is positioned for a successful future with these assets, highly strategic for their growth model. Relatively new to the Alberta oil sands their experience has seen them score well in this category as they transition from a leasing company to workforce accommodation provider. FEATURE

OilfieldPULSE | JULY 201534

Never before has the Canadian oil and

gas industry seen an event quite like the

inaugural Canadian Oil & Gas Awards held

on Wednesday, June 24th, 2015 at the Westin Hotel

in Calgary, Alberta. During a time when the industry

is struggling, it was an opportunity for professionals

from all over Canada to get out from under the

cloud for a night and come together to celebrate all

that has been accomplished over the last year.

The day began with the Canada Industry

Summit, which provided an extended platform to

deliver invaluable strategic and operational content

of real commercial value, as well as extended

networking opportunities.

Senior leaders from E&P, midstream and the

vendor community gathered to deliver practical

insights on methods for improving best practice

and instilling excellence in crucial areas such

as health & safety, environmental protection,

regulation and community engagement.

The Industry Summit was followed by the Gala

Dinner, where the winners of each category were

announced. The judging panel recognized the

listed companies as leaders in the region and

the winners were invited on stage to collect their

award after the gala dinner. The Honourable Lois

Mitchell, CM, AOE opened proceedings and

delivered her speech to a room of over 500 guests

before the winners were recognized for their

contribution to the industry.
