Bristol-Myers Squibb employees are deeply committed to a single Mission: To discover, develop and deliver innovative medicines that help patients

prevail over serious diseases.

Supporting our efforts; the Devens Manufacturing and Process Sciences site has become our Biologics

Center of Excellence for Mammalian Expression, and is expanding to handle commercial manufacturing, clinical

manufacturing, process development, and analytics.

Welcome to Devens

Bristol-Myers Squibb’s state-of-the-art biologics manufacturing and process science facility is located on 89 acres in a leafy, rural corner of the Bay State just 45 minutes west of Boston.

And it is here that we are supporting a critical role in our company evolution to a Diversified Specialty BioPharma company.

We have long understood that our success in making a difference in people’s lives is a reflection of our ability to evolve and reinvent ourselves. At the same time, we have also understood the importance of staying true to our values and to the strategies that allow us to advance our company and our goal to help patients prevail over serious diseases.

Devens is a prime example of putting strategy into action.

When you enter our facility at Devens, you may have the feeling you’re entering something really big. Indeed you are: Our facility is comprised of four buildings in a 400,000 square-foot complex. Think seven football fields.

Completed in 2011, Devens was the largest capital investment our company’s history – $750 million.

And there is more to come – we are building two new buildings; one will house Biologics Develop-ment and the other one will be dedicated to Clinical Manufacturing. Biologics Development will be supporting late phase process development as well as providing scientific support for commercial manufacturing. The Clinical Manufacturing building will be a place where investigational medicines are produced for use in clinical trials.

Both Biologics Development and Clinical Manufactur-ing represent new capabilities for Devens, a site that in its early years has focused solely on large-scale, bulk biologics manufacturing. Once the two new buildings are completed in the early 2016, Devens will become a Center of Excellence for the development and manufacture of biologics medicines, optimally organized to support Bristol-Myers Squibb’s growing pipeline of investigational medicines and potential new products.

the move to Biologics

Historically, pharmaceutical companies have relied on small molecules for most of their marketed products – usually as oral medication. However, large molecules (also known as biologics) are becoming increasingly important in revolutionizing the treatment of disease; delivering healing and hope to thousands of patients suffering from a range of illnesses including cancer, rheumatoid arthritis, and other immune disorders.

Orencia,® a medicine for rheumatoid arthritis, was the first biologic manufactured at Devens, but that was just the beginning. With four biologic products already on the market – and approximately 40 percent of our development portfolio comprised of biologic molecules, Bristol-Myers Squibb is firmly entrenched in this rapidly growing field. This is why our Devens site is a critically important part of our strategy; handling commercial manufacturing, clinical manufacturing, and process development.

environmental leadership

Devens reflects not only state-of-the-art science, but also our commitment to the environment. Going green has many advantages, such as energy savings, environmental benefits, and commitment to a healthy environment makes for a better place to work.

Typically, buildings are constructed with offices spanning the outside walls, cutting off natural light to the interior. Here that scenario is turned inside out. Exterior glass walls and communal office space allow natural light to stream into the build-ing’s center, providing a more collaborative and pleasant working environment. In addition, we’ve built numerous efficiencies into the buildings with regard to heating and cooling, plumbing, insulation and lighting.

Even the manufacturing processes involved in producing biologics are more environmentally friendly than many other kinds of pharmaceutical manufacturing. Traditional small-molecule pharma-ceuticals require solvent-based processes, whereas the processes used at Devens are water-based.

The laboratory and administrative building have already received gold-level certification by the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) system. The manufacturing suite is among the first biologics facility to become LEED certified. Overall, Bristol-Myers Squibb is widely recognized as a leading sustainability-driven company.

our People, our Future

We are working in major areas where winning capabilities will provide a competitive advantage. This calls for tremen-dous innovation and forward thinking, and represents the greatest areas of opportunity for the company. Success in these areas will require the right, top talent. In the highly competitive specialty BioPharma arena, we are taking steps to make sure we attract, retain and develop the best and constantly build our bench for the future – one such example is Devens.

The employees of Devens are the heart and soul of the facility. We are proud to have some of the best and bright-est minds in the industry – people who care deeply about their work, the environment, the community and, most importantly, the patients who benefit from their efforts.

We are proud of our world-class facility and the employ-ees who work here, and are excited about a future of expanded capabilities and products that will continue to bring hope and help to patients around the world.
