Spotlight

L egacy Park is an eight acre site located in the heart of the University North Park shopping area. The

entry to the park is on the west side of 24th Ave. NW, approximately one half mile north of Robinson St. or from the public sidewalks adjacent to the I-35 Frontage Road on the west side of the park. Parking is available in near-by lots located around the various stores and restaurants in the area. The park has been under construction since March 15, 2013; and after significant weather delays and setbacks, is finally about to open for public use. A community volunteer committee is working to finalize plans for the opening ceremonies which are scheduled for September 17, 2015. Activities will begin at 6:00pm with sno-cones, a balloon artist and magician and recorded music. A portion of the Norman Philharmonic Orchestra is scheduled to play at the amphitheater stage beginning at 7:00pm and will be followed by comments from the May-or and other distinguished guests. There will be a fountain and light demonstration at 8:00pm and then the Norman Philharmonic will end the festivities with a final number. The park features a one acre pond with a very sophis-ticated package of fountains and lighting. There are twenty-one water fountains and the same number of water cannons in the center of the pond that are all pro-grammable to provide various types of water displays throughout the day and night. Red, blue and green LED light fixtures are attached to each fountain as well as the

scupper fountains located on the west arbor of the pond. The LED lights can be programmed to create virtually any color, which provides a striking visual display after dark. Pre-set light programs have already been created with OU, Norman High, Norman North and OKC Thunder team colors as well as a number of holiday lighting programs. A promenade walk circles around the perimeter of the pond, with additional walkways through the west side of the site. Several locations have been set aside for public art displays. Electrical outlets have been located throughout the area to accommodate holiday decorations that will be added in the future.Another feature of the park is the amphitheater and stage facility. The stage is equipped with a significant architectural cover which can be seen from locations far away from the site. The audience area is made of three terraced grass surface areas with concrete bench seat walls in-between. The area will accommodate approximately 700 spectators in front of the stage. The entire site is landscaped with flower beds and hun-dreds of trees, which when fully grown will provide large areas of shade for park users. There is a public re-stroom building located at the north side of the park. “We are all very excited that this park is final-ly nearing completion. It has been a long project, but I am sure our community and visitors will be thrilled with park and all of the wonderful events that will take place there for many years to come.”

RECREATIONSpotlight

Finding safe and fun Halloween events for your chil-dren can often be a hard task, but the Irving Recre-ation Center has a great Halloween event for youth that has become more popular each year since it started! If you want to avoid going door-to-door for candy, but still want your children to participate in Halloween festivities…then the Flashlight Candy Scramble event is for you. All over the country many parents no longer want their chil-dren to go trick-or-treating due to potential safety issues. The Irving Recreation Center and their staff provide a safe alternative to the traditional night of trick-or-treating. The Flashlight Candy Scramble started at Irving in 2012 and each year since then the attendance has grown tremendously! Last year the staff added a haunt-ed house to the event as well, making it even more of a success. For one night the staff transforms Irving Rec-reation Center into a Halloween themed funhouse for the entire family. Children between the ages of 5-11 are able to hunt for as much candy as they can find and visit the haunted house—in a safe and friendly en-vironment! There is also a costume contest so kids are encouraged to wear their costumes to the event. It is

a requirement that children bring a flashlight and some-thing to put their treats in, but beyond that they are not required to bring anything else to participate in the event.Even though this event is mainly for fun the Flashlight Candy Scramble also serves to raise awareness for hunger in the Norman community. The Irving Recreation Center holds a Fall Food Drive each year throughout the month of October and during the candy scramble event par-ents are asked to donate one non-perishable or canned good food item. All the food collected benefits the Lit-tle Axe Community Center-Food Pantry which serves people in need. Last year, over ten boxes of non-per-ishable food items and canned goods were collected. This year’s Flashlight Candy Scramble will be held on Thursday, October 29th starting at 7:00pm. The event will take place at the Irving Recreation Center which is located at 125 Vicksburg Avenue, attached to Irving Middle School. This is a FREE event, but please call the staff at Irving to reg-ister your children for the event…(405)292-9774. Also for more information on programs offered at this center or any other park programs, please visit www.normanfun.com!
