Photos and Story by Megan Linski

QueenLaura Hayes ouponCShows like Extreme Couponing on TLC, a reality show where shoppers save

thousands of dollars on large shopping trips just by clipping coupons, make couponing seem like a far-fetched fantasy. Little do many people know, there are hundreds of people throughout Lenawee County who use coupons to their advantage. In Tecumseh, there is one master of savings who is leading the way. Laura Hayes, the head of Couponing Mamas of Lenawee as well as Couponing Mamas of Hillsdale, gives classes on couponing to men and women who are interested in saving for their families. I started couponing eight years ago. Its a great way to see how much money you can save for your family, Hayes said.

Hayes, who has two booklets and a large bag full of coupons, is no amateur when it comes to using coupons to save big. I save $5,000 to $8,000 yearly depending on how much I buy, Hayes said. I coupon everything including my groceries, my jewelry, everything.

Hayes began couponing as a way to save extra money. She got the idea to host coupon classes after she needed a different source of income. I was off work for awhile, and the whole time I was still couponing, Hayes said. I was getting really bored and I realized I could teach others how to coupon and save for their families.

Hayes drives from house to house, instructing others through use of her classes on how to use coupons effectively. I travel, and do classes in mostly other peoples houses. Its set up like any Tupperware party. We start with five or more guests, and it usually lasts around two hours, Hayes said.

Classes in Hayes home begin at $15 per person, while classes in other locations, such as private residences, start at $20 per person. I teach guests how to find sales, where to find sales, when to use coupons and when not to, Hayes said. I break down actual scenarios of deals and Ive actually taken classes on road trips and shown them how couponing works at a store.

The extra resources couponing provides allows Hayes to donate to charity much more frequently. Im a true believer in giving back. I even offer free classes to those who are interested to learn, but who cannot afford to attend my class, Hayes said.

To all the naysayers who doubt coupons can really make a difference in a persons budget, Hayes asks them to consider couponing in order to better save for their families. While theyre spending their money, Im getting it for free or really cheap, Hayes said. Im able to do other things with that money.

Those interested in attending one of Hayes classes can call 517.662.9291. n

    Mark relaxes in a cove

    Canyons serve as road signs

    Canyon crazy

M ark and Jennifer Johnson, owners of Tecumseh Paddling Company, are experienced kayakers and paddle boarders who participated in the adventure of a lifetime when they closed shop early last year in order to river-raft through the Grand Canyon. A friend of the Johnsons obtained a permit to raft through the famous national landmark, and invited the couple to join him. A group of 16 people came along on the trip, with a grand total of seven rafts and one kayak. The trip took 21 days, and spanned over 200 miles. Each raft measured 18-feet-long, and carried everything the

group needed to participate in the adventure. The scenery was so amazing, Jennifer said. Everywhere you looked there was a picture opportunity.

The Johnsons took over seven thousand pictures on their camera during the 21 days of the trip, which included photographs of friends and nature. It makes you realize just

how huge this place really is, said Mark. Animal life was sparse, but what few creatures made the canyons their home caught the attention of the travelers as they passed. The Johnsons saw bighorn

sheep, road runners, deer and scorpions on their trip around the Grand Canyon, although their favorite part of the journey was the canyons

themselves. The coolest thing was seeing the canyons,

Mark said. You can climb in them. Theyre basically your road signs while youre out on the river.

The group carried their own supplies on the trip, which included food, shelter, and medical care. It took over two hours each morning to get packed for their daily journey. We did all the work for ourselves, the cooking, the cleaning, Mark said. We had five layover days when we werent traveling, and on those days we rested. We had to pack everything we needed for the twenty-one days. Theres no resupply, and theres no one to help you out there.

Being virtually alone in the canyon, with only fifteen other people to depend on, gave Mark a sense of peace while on the trip. The best part of getting away was there were no cell phones, no contact with the outside world. Youre alone out there, and if youre injured, youre in trouble. said Mark.

Jennifer enjoyed watching the various constellations in the night sky, far away from the light pollution of cities and populated areas. We saw so many stars, Jennifer said. We slept outside, without tents, only on the cots. We only slept in the tents for five nights.

The Grand Canyon was referred to by the Johnsons as beautiful, but at some points, dangerous. The experience of the travelers made rafting relatively easy, though the slopes and slippery surfaces on the canyons themselves made climbing extremely difficult. Everyone who was on the trip was an experienced rafter or kayaker, so we didnt have any overturned boats. The hiking was scarier than rafting, Mark said. Id tell anybody, if you get the opportunity to do it, do it, Jennifer said. It was awesome.n

    EXPANDING INVENTORY

The November 3 ballot will include a proposed ordinance for the City ofTecumseh that was initiated through a successful citizen-led petitioncampaign. More than 800 city residents signed this petition to showtheir support for an ordinance that would legalize the keeping of a limited number of chickens (females only) as pets within the city limits.

Vote YES for personal freedom and grassroots democracy!

    The Proposed Ordinance:

Roosters (male chickens) are not allowed.

Up to six hens (female chickens) are allowed.

Birds must be kept securely confined on the owners property at all times.

Coops and pens must be at least 10 feet away from lot lines.

No permits, registrations, inspections, or fees are required.

All existing noise and nuisance regulations still apply.

    To Whom It May Concern,

Chickens have been animal companions of humans for thousands of years. They are very entertaining and they provide more benefits to us than dogs or cats. When allowed to range in the yard, they provide outstanding pestcontrol, eating ticks, slugs, mosquitoes, and many other insects. And theyproduce eggs that are much more nutritious than those you can buy at thesupermarket.

Backyard chickens will generally get far more humane care than thoseraised in filthy, crowded factory farms. Industrial production is creating numerous problems, including pollution from manure, antibiotic resistance, and higher risk of a more dangerous strain of bird flu. Keeping a few chick-ens at home is one way we can each do our part to address these problems.Limit their numbers, and require clean, humane care sure. But there is no legitimate reason for any city to prohibit keeping a few chickens, any more than there is reason to ban the keeping of cats or dogs.
