Yet that’s exactly what some local businesses are allow- ing their employees to do. Depending on the breed and temperament, animals can actual- ly help reduce stress and increase productivity at work, making the daily grind more enjoyable. Dr. Brian Hoelscher, associate veterinarian at the Animal Hos- pital of Verona, said animals can be a stress reliever for employees, as long as the pet is comfortable, safe and at ease in the workplace. While most pets who come to work go home at night with their owners, that’s not the case at a business in Fitchburg, where a cat has made an office his permanent home. Jim Mandt, owner of Mandt Sandfill, said his daughters found a cat they wanted on Craigslist three years ago, but he didn’t last long in their house because of his shedding. Now weighing in at 27 pounds, give or take a treat, Rocky Mandt is the full-time office feline at the trucking and excavating company. Since the office is also open on Saturdays, Rocky spends every day and night there. He will jump (or roll) off the counter and greet you at the door, if he feels like it. “He’s the center of the office,” Jim said. His sister-in-law, Deb- bie Mandt, enjoys working in the office with Rocky. She believes that he helps reduce stress in the workplace. “I look forward to having him in the office every day,” she said. “All of our employees love him. Everyone who walks in says hi. He’s kind of like a permanent fix- ture here. This is his home.” Debbie is also responsible for dressing Rocky up in a vari- ety of outfits, including scarves, sunglasses, sports team jerseys, bunny ears and numerous hats … and not just for holidays. They are still searching for a construc- tion hat in his size. In fact, a friend from Tennessee sent a pack- age addressed directly to Rocky Mandt with a Packers cheesehead inside. His ever-changing wardrobe and go-with-the-flow disposition have gained him more than 170 followers on his “Rocky Mandt” Facebook page, which is popu- lated by photos of the 8-year-old gentle giant and his friends who come to visit. “Everybody comments on his hats and asks, ‘What kind of hat are you going to put him in today?’” Debbie said while Employees, customers find joy in Mandt Sandfill office cat P P Owners shares stories of their beloved pets Chewbacca Chewbacca Owner name: Laura and Aus- tin Portz City/Town of Residence: Fitchburg Pet name: Chewbacca Pet’s age: 5 years old Breed: Wookie (unknown terrior mix) How long have you had your pet? Try taking your pet along camping this summerFor those who enjoy the great out-

doors camping during the spring-time can be a perfect weekend get-away However if you donrsquot wantto leave your four-legged friendsbehind while setting out on youradventure try bringing them along

ldquoMany campgrounds allow petswith certain rules and regulationsrdquosaid Dr Mark Stickney clinicalassociate professor at the TexasAampM College of Veterinary Medi-cine amp Biomedical Sciences

Often the rules regarding petscan be seen posted on their websiteand if not questions can be easilyanswered over the phone However

it is not advised that you show upwith your pet without prior researchand consent

ldquoMost rules will include thingssuch as having your pet on a leashmaking sure they are supervised atall times and requiring proof of vac-cinationsrdquo Stickney said ldquoEven ifthey donrsquot require health records orvaccination certificates itrsquos a goodidea to bring them along just incaserdquo

Just as you need to pack food andother essentials for yourself donrsquotforget to pack necessities for yourpets as well Some items yoursquoll needto bring are plenty of food a pet

first-aid kit a harness and a leashEven if the campsite has naturalwater resources such as streams orlakes you must still bring plenty ofwater for your pet to drink through-out your stay There are many dif-ferent diseases they can catch bydrinking from a pond or lake

Coming into contact with wildanimals is a definite risk when youare out in a national forest or grass-land Although most of the wildlifeyou run into wants to keep awayfrom you as well you should havea way of containing your pet just incase

ldquoIf your pet does get into a tussle

with a wild animal you do not wantto get into the middle of itrdquo Stickneysaid ldquoThere is a very good chanceyou will be bitten or harmedrdquo Yourbest method of action is calling offyour pet or to try scaring away thewild animal

In order to prevent such situationsin the first place it is a good idea tokeep your pets close to you through-out your camping expedition and tohave a leash or harness available atall times

Before setting off on your camp-ing adventure make sure your petsare up-to-date on all of their vaccina-tions especially rabies Depending

on the campsitersquos location you mayconsult with your veterinarian aboutany other vaccinations that your petmay need as well as discuss appro-priate flea and tick control

To make camping with your petan exciting experience for the bothof you be sure to research the camp-site ahead of time take note of anyrestrictions or regulations and bringthe essentials along with you
