`Indian Buddhism: Its History, Architecture, and Art in IndiaThursdays: 2:15 – 3:45 p.m.Jan. 30; Feb. 6, 13, 20, 27; Snow Dates – Mar. 5, 12, 19SPECIAL SCHEDULE (Times differ from the traditional schedule)Limited to 15 studentsHammond S08Instructor: John Paul

Most people know the all too familiar story of Siddhartha Gautama (c. 563-480 BCE) who renounced his family and other life’s pleasures; he wandered through the jungles in hopes of finding a permanent solution to the conundrum of human existence: namely, old age, disease, and death. Through extreme physical and mental austerity, he attained wisdom and became known as the Buddha or “the Enlightened One.” Buddha taught his disciples the eightfold path of dharma as the way to escape from the cycle of births and deaths. When Buddha died at a very ripe old age and achieved nirvana, his disciples spread his message all over India and beyond. As a result, within a few centuries, Buddhism transformed itself by becoming a global religion and attracting followers in Central, East, and Southeast Asia. The growth of Buddhist congregations and the popularity of the monasteries added to the flourishing of centers of advanced learning (or universities) and traditions of architecture (including the cave temples), art and painting. The richness and variety of Buddhism, for example, attracted Buddhist visitors to India; they viewed India as “the Holy Land.” After the initial explorations on the background and teachings of Buddha, the remaining four classes of Session III will be devoted to watching informative documentaries on three distinct regions in India where extraordinary historical artifacts have survived. Today, these attract a large number of visitors, Indian and foreign.

Every life holds many stories. Whether your life is wildly unconventional or relatively normal, there is bound to be something fascinating about it. That is why the contemporary memoir--everyday people telling their stories--has become such a popular phenomenon. A memoir covers an aspect of a life, a theme, or an adventure. Whether it’s a short piece about, say, a bicycle ride with a friend, a book about your entire childhood, a marriage, growing older, spiritual beliefs, etc., you will jumpstart your creativity using short prompts for those stories that you want to focus on. You will discover a supportive group to help unleash and uncover your imaginative genies whether for memoir, fiction, poetry, or non-fiction. As a professional writer/author, I know the challenges of overcoming blocks, listening to those voices that say, ‘What do you mean you want to write (or paint, or sing, etc.) ‘Who do you think you are?!’ Here is an opportunity for people who have always wanted to write memoirs, fiction, or plays to learn how and to begin in a supportive, safe space.

Mosses are diverse and ancient plants that are typically small in stature. They lack vascular systems to transport water and must absorb it from their surroundings. Yet mosses are widespread in nature, growing in forests, meadows, and wetlands; They also grow on lawns, sidewalks, stone walls, trees, and statuary. Mosses often form extensive and dense mats, and may live for centuries in bogs and other suitable habitats. Our course will focus on ecology and identification; we’ll use microscopes for observing moss structures in class, and look for mosses outdoors on walks in the sanctuary.

`Climate Change: What’s Happening?Thursdays: 2:30 – 4:00 p.m.Mar. 26; April 2, 9, 16, 23Limited to 20 studentsMcKay C192Instructor: Ross Hunter

In October 2018, the United Nations reported that climate change is moving at locomotive speed and humanity must make bold changes to avert worldwide catastrophes. Why are scientists so sure climate change exists and that humans are exponentially expediting it? We’ll explore these and other questions through multiple lenses, from the Earth sciences to the social sciences. We will learn the relationship of carbon dioxide to climate and examine variations of the gas in our environment. We will also learn how choices in energy and infrastructure affect the carbon cycle and consider the urgent need for better options. Throughout the course, we will consider what we can do about this looming peril. Note: Students need not have a background in science.

`Beyond the HimalayasThursdays: 2:15 – 3:45 p.m.Mar. 26; April 2, 9, 16, 23SPECIAL SCHEDULE (Times differ from the traditional schedule)Limited to 15 studentsHammond G19Instructor: John Paul

In 1994, soon after the break-up of the Soviet Union, Akhil Bakshi led the Central Asian Expedition, consisting of Indian, Chinese, and European scholars; it covered a vast area about 7,500 miles across Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Chinese Turkestan (Xinjiang) and Tibet. Its purpose was to recapture India’s ancient academic and cultural contacts (Buddhism especially) with the people of Central Asia. This 5-part series, commissioned by Indian National Television (Doordarshan), brings to life what has been a forgotten historical saga. Bakshi’s own book, Silk Road on Wheels (2002), provides a detailed account of several historical personalities--such as Timur (or Tamerlane), Chingis Khan, Huen Tsang, and Milarepa. The author transports the audience back in time and vividly relates the past to the present political realities in Central Asia, Chinese Turkestan, and Tibet. The series, augmented by entertaining narrative, reproduces a diverse but gorgeous landscape, riveting tales, and a multiplicity of ethnic groups with their own ethos and values. After the initial discussion on the travels of Chinese Buddhist monks across the Silk Road, the remaining classes will be devoted to watching the series and exploring the important socio-economic issues it unravels.

`Introduction to Tai ChiFridays: 9:30 – 11:00 a.m.Mar. 27; April 3, 17, 24; May 8SPECIAL SCHEDULE (Dates differ from the regular schedule)Limited to 24 studentsHammond G01Instructor: Jeff Cote

In this course, students will learn the fundamental principles of Wuxing Long Pai Taijiquan (Formless Dragon Tai Chi), and a short, eight move, fundamental Tai Chi form, and its basic structure. This class will focus on basic postural alignments, correct movement principles, breathing technique and coordination of form, movement, breath, and flow. During the course, each form movement will also be examined for how it directs movement, energy and synchronous activity. By the end of this course, each student will have developed a strong relationship with the entire form of its individual movements sufficiently that they can take this practice on their own and develop a high level of understanding and skill with Tai Chi.

`Posture WorkoutFridays: 10:00 – 11:30 a.m.Mar. 27; April 3, 17, 24; May 1Limited to 11 studentsFitchburg State University Recreation Center, Dance StudioInstructor: Judith Lindstedt

Good posture has a profound effect on how we feel and how we experience the world around us. This workout is designed to reshape and strengthen your entire body and improve your posture. Through a series of sitting and standing barre exercises, you will work through muscle chains by targeting the connecting tissues that surround every muscle. The balance of strength, mobility, and flexibility is key to achieving a strong, toned body. After doing this workout, you can feel a sense of freedom in your body and maybe even a few inches taller. REQUIRED MATERIALS: Thin, flexible rubber-soled shoes, light hand weights (1 or 2 lbs).

`Plein Air Watercolor PaintingFridays: 10:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.Mar. 27; April 3, 17, 24; May 1SPECIAL SCHEDULE (3 Hours)Limited to 12 studentsCNIC 113Instructor: Carolyn Todd

Painting on-site can be met with challenges including weather, access, comfort, and other issues. The enjoyment and the love of the outdoors through a personal discovery of watercolor are among the goals of Plein Air painting. Early classes in the studio classroom will emphasize watercolor techniques and composition. The final one-two classes, depending on weather, will be located on selected outdoor sites. It is recommended that students have some painting experience along with drawing experience. Drawing is especially important due to (often) limited time associated with selected Plein Air locations. REQUIRED MATERIALS: A supply list for needed and recommended supplies will be provided to the ALFA office.

`The Amazing Brain: Neuroplasticity and Healthy Cognitive Aging Fridays: 12:20 – 1:50 p.m.Mar. 27; April 3, 17, 24; May 1Limited to 12 students. Center for Professional StudiesInstructor: Lena Ficco

Come and learn about how we can truly “teach an old dog new tricks!” A science background is not necessary to learn in or enjoy this course. Our nervous systems, including our brains and spinal cords, are adaptable to our physical and social environments (a process called neuroplasticity). This enables us to learn from experience, thus increasing our potential to survive and thrive even in the face of adversity and trauma, such as stroke and brain/spinal cord injury. This course will use readings from Norman Doidge’s bestseller, The Brain That Changes Itself, to guide discussion of several biological psychology topics related to neuroplasticity, such as: neural communication, homeostasis (being in balance), epigenetics (experiential effects on gene expression), and neuropsychopathology (the study of the neural mechanisms of depression, anxiety, and related conditions).

`Rollstone Hill Historic Rock WalkFree | Community Facilitator-Led WalkSaturday: 10:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.April 25SPECIAL SCHEDULE (One-time event)Limited to 30 studentsBoulder Art GalleryFacilitator: Pete Capodagli

Join us for a two-mile, slow and easy, guided and historically narrated tour of the ‘Rock Walk’ trail from the Rollstone Boulder in Fitchburg’s historic Upper Common to the original site of the Boulder on the summit of Rollstone Hill. Along the way, we will comment on historically significant sites of interest that we pass. RECOMMENDED MATERIALS: Comfortable shoes, water, and a camera.

`Abolitionism, Emancipation, and Civil War Memory in Central Massachusetts in the Mid-Nineteenth and Early-Twentieth Centuries Tuesday, March 31, 2020Ellis White Lecture Hall in Hammond Hall

As a hotbed of anti-slavery activity in the mid-eighteenth century, Central Massachusetts played a vital role in the crusade to emancipate four million slaves from bondage and the ensuing Civil War that finally brought their objective to fruition. In this provocative presentation, Darren Barry examines the individuals and families that made up the abolitionist communities of Fitchburg and Worcester, Massachusetts. He will also discuss the complex ways in which the people of these localities chose to remember the Civil War’s fundamental issues of slavery and racial equality in the decades following the conflict.Darren Barry is a United States history teacher at Montachusett Regional High School in Fitchburg, Massachusetts. He holds a master’s degree in history from Worcester State University and a master’s in education from Chadron State College. His research interests include Civil War memory, the history of teaching slavery in American education, and African-American cultural history during the progressive era. Barry has published essays in the Historical Journal of Massachusetts and the Encyclopedia of African-American Culture and has a forthcoming publication with the National Council for the Social Studies. He is currently working on a manuscript that explores the struggle of African-Americans to reclaim their history, public image, and identity in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

Dear ALFA student,

The spring ALFA semester is right around the corner! After browsing through the courses listed here, I can tell we care going to be busy. As you may have heard, Fitchburg State University is celebrating its 125th birthday this year, and ALFA also turns 15 years old. It’s not too late to join the celebration by making a gift of $15 (or more!) to ALFA today!

The ALFA Foundation Fund was founded in honor of Shirley Pick, one of ALFA’s founding board members. This fund helps us to provide free programming, such as the Spring Grand Finale and our popular Winterlude film series.

If you are one of the many ALFA’s that have already made a donation, THANK YOU! If you have not, please consider contributing to our Foundation Fund. The ALFA program is unique, and Shirley Pick and her other founding board members would be proud of what it has become all these years later.

Our students say it best…

“ALFA has not only enabled me to connect with old friends, it has afforded me the opportunity to make many new friends. It has allowed me to take affordable classes in subject areas that are not only fun, but informative and interesting.” – Judy

“Many colleges have adult learning at night time. Since I cannot drive at night, ALFA gives me the opportunity to make new connections and try new things during day time hours and I truly appreciate this.” – Aimee

Please join our celebration of 15 years of Adult Learning in the Fitchburg Area and make your gift of $15 or more today. Go to: give.evertrue.com/fitchburgstate/alfa to make your secure, tax-deductible donation before the end of the year.
