STORY AND PHOTOSBY KATHY DALEY

T he Facebook post says it all:“Thank you for an awesome firstday.”

Jeffersonville's newest don't-miss-it shop for locally made gifts andfoods came to life on Main Street witha bang the day after Thanksgiving.

Before and after the Jeff holidayparade on November 27, and then allweekend long, customers dove intoJeff Junction: Local Treasures andTreats, and came away with honeyfrom Dirie Farm in Hortonville, maple syrup from Bose Farm inYoungsville, locally made mittens, alpaca scarves and much more.

“We're thrilled at the response,”said owner Susan Davitt Flynn.

Susan and her husband Andy pur-chased the building at 4882 Main St.from Joe and Darlene Fiorelli whohad operated the place for manyyears as the gift shop called The OtherStore.

The two-story structure boaststhree downstairs spaces for shopsand a tenanted apartment upstairs.

Since May 9, the building has

attracted locals seeking haircuts andcoloring, with hair stylist MelissaHahl at the helm. Hahl's business,Stunning Styles, is booming.

At the rear of the building, aChristmas shop operated byJeffersonville proprietor MichelleGadoury sells wrapping paper, prints, ceramics and other holiday-relatedgoods. After the winter holidays,Gadoury will utilize the space to hostauctions for her antiques business,Heirloom Marketplace, further upMain Street.

Susan Davitt Flynn is happy toexplain the long-ago origins of all thisactivity. She grew up in Youngsville, the daughter of local science teacherand sports coach Jerry Davitt. Alongwith her husband and three children,Susan now divides her time betweenYoungsville and New Jersey, whereshe works as a registered nurse.

“But this is really our home,” shesaid. “This is where I grew up andwhere my family likes to be.”

Why buy a building? Flynn saysshe's excited to play a role in

This Christmas — get real, go green

Want to be good to the earth?Choose a real Christmas tree.Growing real trees benefits

the environment; and when they arerecycled, trees are biodegradable.

There are nearly 19,000 acres plant-ed in Christmas trees in New YorkState — that’s about 19 million treesbeing grown today. One acre of realChristmas trees consumes about 500pounds of carbon dioxide each year;and that same acreage producesabout 1000 pounds of oxygen annu-ally — the amount that 18 peopleneed to breathe in a year.

The most popular varieties of treesgrown in New York State includeBalsam, Fraser, Canaan, andConcolor firs. Also available areWhite Spruce, Norway Spruce andColorado Blue Spruce, along withWhite Pine and Scotch Pine. In 2015,the New York State Fair Grand

Champion Christmas tree was aConcolor Fir grown by McDonald’sTree Haven in Painted Post.

A Concolor Fir grown on DomesTree Farm in Bliss, NY, was selectedfor the Upper West Side Holiday Treein Dante Park at Broadway & 63rdStreet (in front of Lincoln Center) inNew York City.

Another Concolor Fir will be deco-rated in the State Capitol Building inAlbany. This tree was donated byBailey Family Christmas Trees inCambridge.

And while it’s not from a tree farm,an 80-year-old, 10-ton, 78-foot tall,47-foot-diameter Norway Sprucefrom Gardiner is the focus ofRockefeller Center this year.

Real Christmas trees are grownlocally on over 875 family-ownedfarms across NYS. In 2012, about275,000 trees were reported byNational Ag Statistics Service as har-vested from New York State’sChristmas tree farms, making the

industry an over $8 million cropannually.

Growers purchase equipment andfertilizers from local suppliers, payfarm workers, and invest earnings inlocal banks. According to Farm CreditEast each dollar received by a NewYork State specialty crop farmer has aripple effect in the community result-ing in an estimated total economicimpact of the New York StateChristmas tree industry of about$14.7 million per year.

STORY AND PHOTOS BY DAN HUST

F or 20 years, Steve’s MusicCenter’s been all about ownerSteve Schwartz’s mantra, “Stop

wishing – start playing!”Don’t play an instrument? You can

still find a great gift for the one ormore in your life who do.

Guitars are Steve’s specialty.“I carry a full line geared towards

the guitar player,” he says – and thatincludes novices as much as experts.“I have beginner guitars and har-monicas.”

Harmonicas? Yep – they’re perfect for people who

aren’t sure what they want to play yetbut do want to make music, Steveexplains.

“I enjoy starting people off,” headmits. “I cater to the beginner andintermediate.”

But Steve’s Music Center offers farmore than acoustic/electric guitars, violins, keyboards, trumpets, saxo-phones and woodwinds.

Need a pick? Got it.Need a pedal? Check.Need a speaker? Ready.

Need a new string? Choose away.Need advice? Just ask.Steve, after all, plays what he

preaches.“I do have a band: Jazzmosis,” he

relates, adding they’ve even got a CD:“Sky Chaser.”

“I also co-host the Monday nightjam session at Dutch’s [in Rock Hill]with Antoine Magliano,” he says. “Wehave an incredible turnout of localtalent.”

With such live entertainmentmushrooming in the Catskills, thisjust might be the perfect time toencourage your loved one, young orold, to unwrap a new musical pas-sion!

Find out more at 248 Rock HillDrive (just off Route 17’s Exit 109) inRock Hill, via his online store atstevesmusiccenter.net or by callingSteve at 845-796-3616.

The STREAM & LAKE MAP OFNEW YORK resembles another map--known to Pennsylvania anglers as the“Lost Stream Map.”

It was completed in 1965 after a 30 year effort by Howard Higbee, a former Penn State Professor.

Professor Higbee painstakinglyplotted by hand, the location of45,000 miles of streams onto themap. It sold extremely well - untilthe printer declared bankruptcy andhauled Higbee’s work to the landfill.

But reprints were impossiblebecause the maps were printed innon-photographic blue. Higbee was even offered $400 for one of his lastmaps. And state agencies wereforced to keep their copies underlock and key.

Then, at the age of 91, HowardHigbee’s dream came true.Computers made it possible toreprint the map.

Then the STREAM & LAKE MAPOF NEW YORK was created.

‘Naked Turkey’ competition benefits Federation

MONTICELLO — The George L.Cooke School Student Council spon-sored a “Naked Turkey” CommunityFood Drive.

The donated non-perishable foodswere brought to the Sullivan CountyFederation for the Homeless Shelter. Each student was asked to bring in anon-perishable food item, and inreturn that student would get a paperfeather for each food item sent in andit then would be placed on their gradelevel turkey which hung in the multi-purpose room.

On November 23rd the grade levelwith the most feathers was rewardedwith a popcorn party, as well as brag-ging rights to the warmest turkey. Thiswas an ongoing friendly battlebetween each of the grade levels. Butin the end, 3rd grade came out gob-bling ahead with a total of 352 non-

perishable donated items. On November 23rd, four students

from the running up grade levelwhich was Kindergarten with a totalof 229 non-perishables donateditems, helped Kelly Mitchell, ALCFacilitator, and Amy Garrett, G.L.Cooke Elementary School ArtTeacher, deliver the food items to theSullivan County Federation for theHomeless.

Kathy Kreiter, the Program Admin-istrator for the Sullivan County Feder-ation for the Homeless, was there togreet and help us unload all of theitems. She said that “this was one ofthe largest food donations ever”! Alltotaled, the George L. Cooke Elemen-tary School collected approximately922 non-perishable items to bedonated. Wonderful job children; youare indeed Greater than Average!
