here’s no shortage of treats inside DeFilip-pis Italian Bakery and Café!

The Broadway, Monticello mainstay hasbeen giving the gift of good food for 27 years, andnow it’s even better.

“The café just took off,” says Carmela Foglia, whowith co-owner Angelo Foglia opened the break-fast/lunch destination this past August. “Peoplehave been very receptive. They love the soups, quiches and lunch specials.”

This time of year, DeFilippis is filled with Christ-mas cookies, decorated doughnuts and holiday-themed cakes. You can even find fresh, locally-cre-ated flower baskets!

“After the holidays, we want to start doing cup-cake classes for kids and sip ‘n paint classes foradults,” Carmela explains.

Don’t forget that DeFilippis is also the premierregional bakery (now serving NY-style water bagels, too), with its breads, rolls and pastries offered notjust in its own store but in shops spanning the Hud-son, Delaware and Susquehanna river valleys.

And with off-premises catering, Carmela and

company can come directly to your home orbusiness!

What keeps them innovating after more than a

quarter-century?“I have two

boys, ages 26 and21. They work forus now,” Carmelapoints out. “Wedid the expan-sion for them.”

So you can becertain DeFilip-pis will be readyto meet yourneeds – andappetite – formany more years.

Located at 506Broadway in the

heart of Monticello, DeFilippis is open 6 a.m.-7p.m. Mondays through Saturdays and 6 a.m.-6

or those with a wine or liquorconnoisseur in their lives,Sullivan County has no shortage

of breweries, distilleries, and evenvineyards where holiday shopperscan find that perfect gift.

Catskill BreweryCatskill Brewery, located in

Livingston Manor, is an LLC made upof the three founding partners: RandyLewis, Ramsay Adams, and Kirt

Gunn, according to Lewis.Lewis said that this holiday shop-

ping season Catskill Brewery is “sell-ing growlers (a special container usedto carry fresh craft beer home from abrewery) in 32- and 64-oz. sizes, andeven Catskill Brewery apparel.”

As for his recommendation on theperfect drink this holiday season,Lewis says, “Our Dark Lager,‘Nightshine’ is a perfect beer for cold

Catskill nights. It is made with de-husked toasted barley, and is deli-cious paired with friends and food, oralone by the fire.”

Besides going directly to the CatskillBrewery at 672 old Route 17 inLivingston Manor, you can also findmany of their products in more than“61 restaurants and bars across theCatskills and Hudson Valley,” accord-ing to Lewis.

In fact, Catskill Brewery is holding aBoxing Day event on December 26from noon–6 p.m., featuring beer,

music and food.Catskill Brewery’s 2014 Holiday

Bashakill VineyardsFor the discerning wine lover this

holiday season, there’s BashakillVineyards in Wurtsboro.

Owner/operator Paul Deninno hasyou covered with possibly the widestselection of quality wines in the area.

“I had a love of agriculture and

wine, plus commuting 180 miles to ajob I didn’t like made the decisioneasy for me,” said Deninno of open-ing Bashakill Vineyards back in 2008.

As far as the day-to-day operationsat Bashakill Vineyards, Deninno says,“I am a one-man show but I do havesome good friends that help mesometimes.”

Open only Saturdays from noon to6 p.m., wine isn’t all that’s on offer

over at Bashakill Vineyards, asDeninno relates: “We are only openthree more Saturdays – the lastSaturday being December 27 – butwe offer live music every Saturdayand will have some holiday winesales as well.”

And Deninno has a holiday drink inmind for his customers as well: “Wehave a holiday mulled wine madefrom our Blue Heron wine, cinnamonsticks, cloves, organic sugar and apinch of ginger then served warm,”he affirmed. “We also just got our

Farm brewery licenseand released our firstbeer for sale by theglass dubbed OpossumPorter.”

And you don’t have totravel all the way to Wurtsboro to geta taste of Bashakill Vineyards, because as Deninno says, “We canship wine, and we also have it insome local restaurants. Still, 90 per-cent of our wine is sold direct out ofour tasting room, of course.”

And, Deninno continued, “Patronsare welcome to bring food to ourestablishment, drink on premisesand walk our around our vineyard.”

Frechette of PUPPETKABOB, at theCAS Arts Center at 48 Main Street, Liv-ingston Manor on Saturday, Decem-ber 20 from 2-3 p.m.

“The Snowflake Man” is a beautifultrunk show of Czech-style marionettesand props backed by a pop-up book ofwatercolor paintings telling the story of"Snowflake" Bentley. This utterlyunique show combines art with historyand science through live story-telling.

This story was inspired by Wilson"Snowflake" Bentley, a self-educatedfarmer and scientist who in 1885attracted world attention by adaptinga bellows camera to a compoundmicroscope – he became the first per-son to capture the image of a singlesnow crystal.

“When my grandfather was a young

boy, he purchased from ‘Snowflake’Bentley three snowflake photos,” saidperformer Sarah Frechette. “Mygrandfather’s pride in his photosinspired my idea for this show. At theheart of it, it is a love letter from me tomy late grandfather.”

Submitted by Theresa Allen, Hancock Liquor Store

• 3/4 ounce Raspberry flavored Vodka• 3/4 ounce Peppermint Schnapps• 3/4 ounce White Crème De Coco• 1/4 ounce grenadine• Half and Half• Seltzer waterThe Candy Cane is a fun holiday cocktail that is simple,

sweet, and holds many of our favorite flavors of the season. The mix is interesting, beginning with a base of Raspberry

Vodka on top of which peppermint and chocolate are piled. We cannot forget the sweet grenadine or the cream, whichround out the unique layers quite wonderfully.

If you like, skip the splash of soda, though you willfind it adds a nice little sparkle and brings a lightnessto what can be a rather heavy drink.

1. Pour the vodka, peppermint schnapps, white creme decacao, and grenadine into a cocktail shaker with ice.

2. Shake Well.3. Shake into a cocktail or Martini glass rimmed with crushed peppermint

candy.4. Fill with half and half.5. Top with a splash of soda water.
