transformations including its very famous predecessors ‘Ultrasonics International’ and

‘The World Congress on Ultrasonics’.

201 5 ICU is the first congress in this series to return to the West of Europe after having

About ultrasonics and ICU201 5:

Ultrasonics is the study of high frequency mechanical (acoustic) waves and is well

known to the public as medical echography, sonar for underwater detection of objects,

nondestructive evaluation of structures and new materials, treatment of cancer by

hyperthermia, sophisticated electronic fi lters based on surface acoustic wave fi lters and

phononic crystals, ultrasonic cleaning of materials in industry, just to name a few.

The 201 5 ICU wil l gather the very top researcher in the field of ultrasonics and wil l

present a modern scientific program combining established research topics in

combination with the newest emerging subjects. The entire ultrasonics community has

been informed about 201 5 ICU Metz since several years and all are looking forward

A few words about the venue : ARSENAL, Metz0 7

The congress venue of “ICU 201 5 – Metz” is “l ’Arsenal”. This congress site consists of the

main building called “l ’Arsenal” and the beautiful historical bui ldings next to the main

building (20-50 meters away). Not only is this complex beautiful , of historical significance,

of cultural importance and very central ly located in the city of Metz, it is also very

functional, providing 2 large auditoria (for plenary lectures) and smaller rooms that are

used as conference rooms/auditoria for events such as ICU.

The facil ity consists of a concert hal l with 1 ,500 places (the Grande Salle), a room with 350

places (the Esplanade hall), two reception rooms (Governor and Orangerie hal ls), an

exhibition gallery, a shop sell ing art, and a restaurant. The dimensions are placed next to

those of Musikverein of Vienna and the volume of the room is about 1 3,600 cubic meter.

Ceil ings were established by boxes in staff final ized by the acousticians. Since its

inauguration, the Arsenal has gained wide recognition for the quality of its musical

acoustics.

The arsenal as a concert hal l was developed in the 1 980’s and constructed just before

1 990; earl ier it was a mil itary building. The concert hal l is rectangular but with an adequate

mixture of acoustic reflectors and diffusers. Although the building consists of large and

heavy natural stone, typical for the city of Metz, the interior of the concert hal l consists

mostly of wood. When occupied the reverberation time is 1 .45 s at 1 25 Hz, 1 .8 s at 250

Hz, 2.1 s at 500 Hz, 2.4 s at 1 kHz, 2.4 s at 2 kHz and 2.1 s at 4 kHz. When empty the

reverberation time is somewhat larger. When empty the acoustics is hence less perfect

and requires some adaptation by the philharmonic orchestra.

The difference is due to the seats, a problem that acousticians and ultrasonics special ists

to attend the 201 5 ICU congress wil l of course clearly understand. The concert hal l is also

not optimized for jazz and rock. For classical music performances the concert hal l has

received wide applause however.

As a matter of fact the concert hal l has a depth of over 1 7 m, a width of 23 m and a length

of 54 m. I ts volume is over 1 3 thousand cubic meter. I t has a total of 1 548 seats – of

course only the best seats wil l be used for 201 5 ICU.
