Introduction: Potato variety trials were conducted at three locations in Maine as part of the NE1231 Regional
Project (Development of New Potato Clones for Environmental and Economic Sustainability in the Northeast).
Forty-nine varieties and clones were tested at Aroostook Research Farm, Presque Isle, Maine. Thirty-four NE1231
and advanced breeding clones were tested on a commercial farm in Exeter (central Maine), while eighty-two
NE1231 and advanced breeding clones were tested on a commercial farm in St. Agatha (northern Maine). The
primary objective of all of the Maine trials is to determine performance, quality, and storage characteristics of
promising potato clones and new varieties in Maine.
Methods: Single-row plots, 25 feet long, were utilized for the NE1231 trials at Aroostook Research Farm. The plot
length for the advanced selection, Central Maine NE1231, and St. Agatha NE1231 trials was 20 feet. All trials were
hand planted using randomized complete block designs and four replications (two replications per treatment for
some of the clones in Central Maine and St. Agatha trials). The seedpiece spacing used for each line is listed in
subsequent tables. Details of important management practices are presented in Maine Table 1. At the Presque Isle
site the varieties were grouped so that separate tests could be vinekilled and harvested based on maturity
classification. Remaining cultural practices were similar to those used on commercial farms in the area. Specific
gravity was determined at harvest using the weight-in-air/weight-in-water method. Hollow heart ratings indicate
the number of hollow tubers observed per 40 large tubers examined. Percent hollow heart is based on 10 tubers per
replicate plot whenever 10 tubers of the appropriate size class are available. Unless noted otherwise chip color
evaluations were conducted during December following storage at 50 F. Chips were fried at 350 F for threeo o
minutes and evaluated using an Agtron M35, calibrated with the black "0" disk = 0 and the white "90" disk = 90.
Chips were crushed and reported values are means from four replicates per variety. Each sample was read three
times with thorough mixing between readings.
Susceptibility to skinning and shatter bruise was measured soon after harvest. Approximately 10 lbs of
tubers that exceeded 1f” diameter were tumbled in a drum with three stones for 1 minute at 15 rpm. Each tuber
was then rated for percentage of the tuber surface affected by skinning or shatter bruise and the percentage of tubers
with air and/or thumbnail cracks. An additional abrasive peel test was conducted on separate samples to determine
biochemical aspects of blackspot bruise susceptibility (see Pavek et al, APJ 62:511-517). Ten tubers per plot were
warmed for 24 hours and then abrasively peeled for 30 seconds. Color was allowed to develop for 24 h and then
individual tubers were rated for discoloration where 0=no discoloration and 5=severe discoloration. Shatter and
blackspot bruise susceptibility were measured with the weight-drop method as noted in Table 18.
Results:
Rainfall, General Growth, and Plant Stands. Rainfall by month and location is listed in Maine Table 2.
Rainfall was abundant and well distributed in Presque Isle and St. Agatha. Central Maine had wet conditions
during June; however, July had low rainfall. Supplemental irrigation was applied during July and August at the
Central Maine site.. Early plant growth was good at all three sites. Adirondack Red, Easton (AF3001-6),
Katahdin, Palisade Russet, Russet Norkotah, AF4550-2, , AF5275-1, AF5278-3, and ND8068-5Rus had relatively
poor early to mid-season vigor at the Presque Isle site. Katahdin, Snowden, AF5033-13, AF5386-4, AF5387-2,
AF5392-8, AF5393-1, AF5446-11, WAF10131-11, and WAF10131-19 had relatively poor early to mid-season
vigor at the Exeter site. Katahdin, Palisade Russet, Russet Norkotah, AF4532-9, AF5072-4, AF5072-12, AF5091-
2, AF5407-13, NDAF092239CB-2, ND8068-5Rus had relatively poor early to mid-season vigor at the St. Agatha
site. Pest control practices were effective at all sites. Plant stand equaled or exceeded 90% of targets for most
clones at all three sites. The only NE1231 regional trial exceptions were Katahdin (83%, St. Agatha), Palisade
Russet (89%, Presque Isle), Snowden (87%, Presque Isle), and NY154 (74%, Presque Isle). In the advanced
selection trials at Exeter and St. Agatha all clones had greater than 90% plant stands. Only Adirondack Red (89%)
at Presque Isle had less than 90% stands. Yields were average at Presque Isle and above average at Exeter and St.
Agatha. Total yields for Presque Isle, Exeter, and St. Agatha averaged 288, 437, and 438 cwt/A, respectively
(mean of six standard varieties grown at all locations).

Aroostook Research Farm NE1231 Regional Potato Variety Trials. Yield and quality results for the 2015
NE1231 trials at Aroostook Research Farm are presented in Maine Tables 3 to 8. Yields were only fair to good
despite adequate and well distributed rainfall. Tuber size varied greatly among the clones and hollow heart
incidence was generally low. In the red trial, none of the new clones that had higher U.S.#1 yields than the
standard varieties, Chieftain or Dark Red Norland. AF4985-1 had better tuber appearance than the standards.
Atlantic, Sebec (AF0338-17), Yukon Gold, AF4442-4, and AF4975-3 had good yields in the mid-season trial.
Yukon Gold and AF4648-2 had the best tuber appearance. Russet Burbank was the top yielding variety in the
russet trial. Caribou Russet, Easton, and AF4124-7 also had good yields. Tuber appearance appearance was fair to
good for all clones except Palisade Russet, which was poor. External defects incidence was relatively low for most
clones and varieties. Those with high external defects incidence were: Katahdin, Kennebec, Palisade Russet,
Shepody, AF4648-2, AF4985-1, B2833-16, CO098-12-5, and NY154. Hollow heart incidence in large-sized tubers
was low except for Palisade Russet (8%), Shepody (5%), Snowden (10%), Yukon Gold (5%), and NY154 (10%).
Atlantic, AF4124-7, AF4157-6, AF4975-3, B2833-16, BNC244-10, ND8068-5Rus, and NY148 had the highest
specific gravities. Chip color scores were particularly good for Atlantic, AF4157-6, AF4648-2, AF4975-3,
ND8068-5Rus, and NY154.
Central Maine NE1231 Regional Potato Variety Trial. Yield and quality results for the 2015 NE1231 trial
at Exeter are presented in Maine Tables 9 and 10. Yields were good in this trial and tuber sizing was generally
good. Atlantic, Sebec, Superior, and AF4975-3 had especially high total and US#1 yields. AF4138-8 and AF4157-
6 had small tuber size profiles. Sebec, AF4138-8, AF4648-2, and NY148 had good tuber appearance scores.
Katahdin, Kennebec, Yukon Gold, AF4157-6, and B2833-16 had especially high external defects incidence (mostly
common scab), while Sebec, Superior, AF4138-8, and AF4648-2 had low incidence. Kennebec, and NY154 had
5% hollow heart incidence, while incidence in all other clones was low. Atlantic, Snowden, AF4975-3, B2833-16,
NY148, and NY154 had specific gravities of 1.085 or higher. Snowden, AF4157-6, AF4648-2, and AF4975-3 had
the best chip colors in the trial.
Northern Aroostook County NE1231 Regional Potato Variety Trials. Yield and quality results for the
2015 NE1231 trials at St. Agatha are presented in Maine Tables 11 to 14. Most varieties had very good yields at
the St. Agatha site. Atlantic, Sebec, AF4442-4 had particularly good yields in the round-white trial. Sebec and
AF4442-4 had good tuber appearance. None of the new reds had yields exceeding the Chieftain standard, however,
all of the test clones had yields that equaled or exceeded those of Dark Red Norland. Scab, possibly due to
powdery scab, detracted from the appearance of Dark Red Norland and AF4985-1. Caribou Russet (AF3362-1)
and Easton (AF3001-6) had particularly high total and US#1 yields in the russet trial. External defects were
prevalent with several clones exhibiting high levels of sunburn, off shapes, growth cracks, and/or scab. Dark Red
Norland, Katahdin, Kennebec, Palisade Russet, Shepody, Yukon Gold, AF4138-8, AF4648-2, AF4985-1,
CO09812-5R, and NY154 had especially high incidence of external tuber defects. Dark Red Norland, Kennebec,
Shepody, Yukon Gold, AF4138-8, AF4648-2, and AF4985-1 had high scab incidence, possibly due to powdery
scab. Palisade Russet, Teton Russet, and AF4985-1 had greater than 10% hollow heart incidence in large-sized
tubers. Atlantic and Snowden had particularly high specific gravities. AF4157-6, AF4975-3, and Easton had
particularly good chip color.
French Fry color and Uniformity, 2015 NE1231 Trials. Fry color and color uniformity were measured on
fresh cut tuber slabs taken from 50F storage (Table 15). Stem-end color defects were prevalent in many of the
clones, especially at the Presque Isle site. Fry color was darker at the St. Agatha site, but fewer clones had stem-
end defects. Teton Russet, AF4172-2, and ND8068-5Rus produced good quality fries at both sites. AF4113-2
produced good quality fries at the Presque Isle site. Easton produced good quality fries at the St. Agatha site.
French Fry Processing from the 2014 Aroostook Research Farm Test. French fry color and texture
evaluations were conducted on several 2014 NE1231 clones during winter of 2014-2015 (Table 16). Dakota
Trailblazer, Easton (AF3001-6), AF4124-4, AF4124-7, AF4296-3, AF4320-17and had especially light fry color.
Palisade Russet, Russet Norkotah, Shepody, A010101-1, AF4320-17, and AF4532-8 had significantly greater
graying than Russet Burbank. Fries from Caribou Russet (AF3362-1) and Russet Norkotah had poor texture.
Texture ratings for Palisade Russet and AF4532-8 were also relatively poor. Only Easton (AF3001-6) and
AF4296-3 french fries were judged to be better than Russet Burbank in overall fry quality (length, fry color,
2
uniformity, graying, and/or texture). Dakota Russet, AF4124-4, AF4124-7, AF4172-2, and AF4342-3 were rated as
equal to Russet Burbank, while Caribou Russet (AF3362-1), Palisade Russet, Russet Norkotah, Shepody, Teton
Russet, A010101-1, AF4320-17, and AF4532-8 were judged as poorer than Russet Burbank.
Aroostook Research Farm Small-scale Storage Evaluations. Data on small-scale storage and processing
characteristics were collected from 41 NE1231 varieties and clones during the 2014-2015 storage season (Maine
Tables 17 and 18). Very good chip colors were obtained from 50 F February storage for the following clones growno
at Presque Isle: Atlantic, Dakota Trailblazer, Easton (AF3001-6), Shepody, Teton Russet, A010101-1, AF4124-4,
AF4157-6, AF4172-2, AF4296-3, AF4320-17, AF4342-3, and B2676-2. Atlantic, Snowden, AF4013-3, AF4157-6,
BNC182-5,MSQ086-3, NY148, and NYH15-17 produced very light chips from 50 F March storage in the Centralo
Maine test (Table 18). In the Presque Isle test, Atlantic, Dakota Trailblazer, Easton (AF3001-6), Kennebec,
Shepody, Snowden, Teton Russet, A010101-1, AF4013-3, AF4157-6, MSQ086-3, NY148, and NYH15-17 had
very light chip colors directly from 45 F storage. In the Central Maine test, Snowden, AF4013-3, AF4157-6,o
NY148, and NYH15-17 produced particularly good chip colors directly from 45 F storage. None of the clones ino
the Presque Isle test produced good chips directly out of 38 F storage; however, Atlantic, Snowden, AF4157-6,o
BNC182-5, and NY148 produced good chips when reconditioned from cold storage. French fry processing types
with relatively good reconditioning from 38 F storage were Dakota Trailblazer, Shepody, AF4124-4, AF4320-17,o
and AF4342-3. In the Central Maine test, Atlantic, Snowden, AF4013-3, AF4157-6, NY148, and NYH15-17
reconditioned very nicely from 45 F storage. o
Skinning and bruise test scores for the 2014 field season are presented in Maine Table 17. The skinning
and shatter bruise scores from the bruise barrel test were presented last year. Shatter bruise susceptibility scores
were particularly good for Caribou Russet (AF3362-1), Dakota Trailblazer, Palisade Russet, Rochdale Gold Doree,
Russet Burbank, Russet Norkotah, Shepody, Snowden, Superior, A010101-1, AF4013-3, AF4296-3, AF4342-3,
AF4640-1, B2833-16, MSQ086-3, NY150, and NYH15-17, while they were poor for Yukon Gold, AF4157-6,

Dakota Russet, Katahdin, Kennebec, Palisade Russet, Russet Burbank, Teton Russet, Yukon Gold,
AF4138-8, AF4157-6, AF4296-3, AF4342-3, CO00291-5R, MSQ086-3, NY136, and NY148 required at least 200
days to reach the one-half-inch sprout stage. Caribou Russet (AF3362-1), Sebec (AF0338-17), AF4320-17, B2833-
16, BNC182-5, and BNC244-10 reached the one-half-inch sprout stage in 170 days or less. Selections with very
low weight loss (<4%) from 38 F storage were: Caribou Russet (AF3362-1), Dakota Trailblazer, Russet Burbank,o
Russet Norkotah, Shepody, Snowden, Yukon Gold, A010101-1, AF4124-7, AF4320-17, AF4640-1, B2833-16,

Snowden, AF4320-17, AF4532-8, B2833-16, BNC182-5, and NY148.
Central Maine Advanced Breeding Lines. Yield and quality results for the 2015 advanced breeding line
trials at Exeter are presented in Maine Tables 19 and 20. Clones with outstanding yields were AF4552-5, AF5416-
2, AF5426-3, AF5432-5, and NDAF102629C-4. Specific gravities were > 1.090 for Atlantic, Snowden, AF5040-8,
and AF5445-2. AF5281-4, AF5432-5, and AF5445-2 had very small tubers. Snowden, Snowden, AF5040-8,
AF5281-4, AF5386-4, AF5393-1, and AF5445-2 had especially high levels of external defects (especially common
scab). Atlantic, AF5320-1, AF5386-4, AF5387-2, AF5445-2 had 5% or more hollow heart. Chip color scores were
generally good, however, three clones had an Agtron score below 60: AF5432-5, AF5445-2, and WAF10131-11.
AF5281-4, AF5320-1, AF5392-8, AF5426-3, and NDAF102629C-4 had especially good chip color. AF5033-13,
AF5153-11, AF5426-3, and WAF10131-11 had particularly good tuber appearance.
Northern Aroostook County Advanced Breeding Lines. Yield and quality results for the 2015 advanced

the round-white trial were: Atlantic, AF5450-7, BNC182-5, and BNC369-4. Atlantic, AF5429-3, and B2833-8 had
3
specific gravities that were 1.085 or above. B3003-8 had severe growth crack problems and three clones had more
than 10% sunburn incidence (Katahdin, AF5447-4 and AF5467-13). AAF07847-2 and AF5467-13 had >10%
poorly shaped tubers. Katahdin, AF5215-2, AF5225-1, AF5280-5, AF5403-3, AF5429-3, AF5435-7, B2833-8, and
NDAF092239CB-2 had greater than 20% scab incidence. None of the clones had more than 2.5% hollow heart
incidence in large-sized tubers. AF5215-2 and AF5280-5 had chip color scores that were quite good (>65).
AF5044-19, B2833-8, BNC182-5, and BNC369-4 had particularly good tuber appearance.

3Rus, and WAF10039-1Rus. Russet Norkotah and AF5312-1 had good tuber appearance ratings.
French Fry color and Uniformity, 2015 Advanced Russet Trial. Fry color and color uniformity were
measured on fresh cut tuber slabs from 32 potato clones taken from 50F storage (Table 25). Color and stem-end
color defects were prevalent in many of the clones. Russet Burbank, AF4198-2, AF4532-9, AF4872-2, AF4950-2,
AF5057-13, AF5060-27, AF5071-2, AF5072-4, AF5072-12, AF5091-2, AF5091-8, AF5164-19, AF5314-2,
AF5406-10, AF5407-13, AF5469-2, WAF10039-1Rus, and NDAF092412-3Rus produced good quality fries.
Presque Isle Advanced Red- and Purple-skinned Breeding Clones. Yield and quality results for the 2015
advanced breeding red- and purple-skinned line trials at Presque Isle are presented in Maine Tables 26 and 27.
AF5414-1 and NDAF102573-2 had the best yields of the test clones. Tubers of AF4659-12, AF5375-3, and
NDAF102571B-5 were very small. AF4659-12, AF4831-2, AF5245-1, AF5275-1, AF5412-3, NDAF102571B-5 ,
and NDAF102573-2 had the best tuber appearance scores for the red and/or speciality markets. Four clones had
>15% external defects incidence: Adirondack Blue, AF5412-1, AF5412-3, and NDAF102568C-2. Hollow heart
incidence was low in this experiment with only AF5245-1 having greater than 5% incidence.
Washed Tuber Appearance Scores for Advanced Red- and Purple-skinned Breeding Clones. Of the 2014
growing season lines tested, white-skinned clones with a high percentage of attractive tubers were: AF4138-8, and
B2833-16 (Maine Table 28). Of the reds and purples tested, Chieftain, AF4659-12, AF4831-3, AF4985-1, AF5245-
1, and B2676-2 had the best washed tuber appearance ratings from storage.
Sensory Quality Evaluation of Advanced Breeding Lines from the 2014 Growing Season. Baked and
boiled sensory evaluation results from the 2014 growing season are presented in Maine Table 29. AF4013-3,
AF4138-8, AF4124-7, AF4172-2, AF4296-3, AF4320-17, B2676-2, MSQ086-3, NY148, and NY150 had
acceptable baked scores when compared to standard varieties. BNC244-10 was the only test clone that was rated
poorer than the standard varieties.
Dark Red Norland, Katahdin, Superior, AF4013-3, AF4138-8, AF4296-3, MSQ086-3, and NY150 had
good boiled quality scores. AF4124-7 and AF4172-2 performed poorer than desirable in the boiled quality test due
to after-cooking darkening. Atlantic, Russet Burbank, Yukon Gold, AF4124-7, AF4172-2, AF4320-17, B2676-2
and NY148 had poorer than desirable boiled quality scores due to sloughing. BNC244-10 was difficult to judged
because of its mottled, purple color.
Promising Selections in the 2015 NE1231 Regional Variety Trials and Advanced Selection Trials.
Selections that performed particularly well in the 2015 Maine regional and advanced trials were:
Chipping
4
Sebec Tested as AF0338-17. It has yields similar to Atlantic in the S.E. with very little internal heat
necrosis or hollow heart, not a storage chipper, but chips very well from the field in the
Southeastern U.S.
AF4157-6 Early maturing with moderate to good yields, excellent chip color, good gravity, bruise
resistance. It may work well from the field in the South and from storage in the north. Small
tuber size and scab susceptibility are weaknesses. Good yields for an early, but has been
inconsistent.
AF4648-2 Mid-season maturity with good yields, chip color, gravity, and bruise resistance. This clone is
common scab, PVY, and GN resistant. Susceptibility to greening was a problem in 2015 trials.
NY154 Also known as NYH15-17, this clone is late maturing with good yields, moderate gravity, and
good chip color. Tuber appearance is fair to good, but it can have some hollow heart. It has good
scab resistance. Tuber shape sometimes runs more toward oblong than is desirable.
Other Promising chipping candidates that will be tested again in 2016: AF5040-8 (high yields, good
gravity and chip color, outstanding in 2014 and 2015 national trials).
Fresh market whites
Sebec Tested as AF0338-17. Widely adapted, medium to medium late, round to oblong tubers, slight
net, fair to good appearance, low external defects, moderately susceptible to scab.
AF4138-8 Bright appearance with slightly netted, round to oblong tubers, excellent boiled quality, early to
mid-season maturity, moderate scab resistance, and higher yields than Superior. Size profile can
be smaller than Superior.
AF4648-2 Smooth skin, bright appearance, round to oblong tubers, possible chipping and fresh market use,
mid-season, very good common scab resistance plus PVY and GN resistance. Susceptibility to
greening was a problem in 2015 trials.
Other Promising fresh market whites that will be tested again in 2016: AF4552-5 (early maturity,
moderate scab resistance, good yields, netted skin); AF5280-5 (medium early, bright, moderate
scab resistance, large tubers); AF5426-3 (mid-season, bright, moderate scab resistance); AF5450-
7 (late maturity, bright, good scab resistance).
Russets or Long Whites
Caribou Russet Tested as AF3362-1. A medium-late maturing, dual-purpose russet with fair to good appearance,
long to oblong tubers, low external defects, moderate specific gravity, and good fry color. It has
high yields, moderate to large tuber size, and good internal quality (except for internal heat
necrosis in southern areas). It has moderate scab resistance and is resistant to golden nematode
and bruise.
Easton Tested as AF3001-6, this clone produces long, netted to lightly russeted tubers that have excellent
fry color. It has very high yields, good tuber size, medium to high gravity, and good resistance to
verticillium. Susceptibility to tuber late blight and rot have been weaknesses.
Teton Russet A long russet with moderate to high yields, good appearance, and good processing potential. It
has moderate scab and fuarium resistance, but is reportedly susceptible to shatter bruise and
softrot. Yields have been inconsistent in our trials. Fry quality has been good.
AF4296-3 A late maturing, russet with good fry quality, fair tuber appearance, and high yields. Specific
gravity is moderate (average of 1.079 in ME trials) and fry color from storage has been good. It
has been an outstanding performer in the national fry processing trials (NFPT). It is moderately
susceptible to scab, but has moderate verticillium resistance and good bruise resistance.
Other Promising russet and long-white candidates that will be tested again in 2016: AF4124-7 (russet,
processing, large tubers, possible dual purpose); AF4172-2 (russet, processing, smaller tuber size
profile, bruise resistant, possible dual purpose); AF4872-2 (russet, good yields and excellent
processing quality); AF4953-6 (russet, good yields, possible dual-purpose); and many more
coming; AF5071-2 (russet, good yields and fry quality, processing); AF5091-8 (russet, good
yields, possible fry processing); AF5164-19 (russet, good yields, possible dual purpose
processing); AF5179-4 (russet, good yields, possible fry processing); AF5312-1 (russet, good
yields and scab resistant, fresh market); AF5406-10 (russet, good yields and fry color,
processing); AF5407-13 (russet, good yields and fry color, possible dual use); AF5464-4 (russet,
5
good yields, fresh market); WAF10073-3Rus (russet, good yields and scab resistance, possible
fry processing).
Reds and Specialty
NY150 Very small, bright “creamer-type” white-skinned potatoes. PVY, scab (moderate resistance), and
GN resistance.
AF4659-12 A yellow-fleshed “pinto-type” specialty variety with a interesting red and yellow skin pattern. It
produces small, fingerling-type tubers that are excellent roasted, boiled, or fried.
AF4985-1 Bright red skin with a smooth, attractive skin finish, white flesh, good cooking quality, medium
to medium-late vine maturity. Yields are often good, but have been inconsistent due to external
tuber defects (primarily greening and growth cracks).
Other Promising red and specialty candidates that will be tested again in 2016: AF4831-2 (red, white
flesh, scab resistance); AF5215-2 (yellow flesh, pink eyes, small tubers, scab susceptible);
AF5245-1 (purple, white flesh, scab resistant); AF5412-3 (purple flesh, some late blight
resistance); AF5414-1 (reddish flesh, scab resistance, some late blight resistance); BNC244-10
(purple and yellow skin, mottled purple flesh), interesting appearance, but mixed reviews on
mottled, light purple flesh; NDAF102573-2 (red, white flesh).
