Work Styles:
Action-Oriented – Leaps

Social – Wastes time (We
can book a campervan,
have DJ, etc)
Planner – Doesn’t know
when to stop (Ok, so how
far is MEL? Do we have
enough fuel? Is the car
okay?)
Questionner – Makes sure
you take care of everything.

TIME & COST: ARE THEY REALLY IMPORTANT? By Siddhant Borade
Cost management is a key
to project management
planning. Costs are derived
after scheduling activities
on considering the risks
associated with them. A
baseline budget is
established to keep a track
of actual cost involved.
The most important aspect
of cost management is
determining the impact of
variances and rectifying
them if necessary. It
involves monitoring task
completion and tracking
activities. Cost management
plays a vital role in overall
project planning, tracking
and success.
Performance Measurement Analysis: This technique can help us gauge the magnitude of
variances and develop key values for any work package or scheduled activity. The cumulative
value of scheduled work in the project is compared with actual costs to determine variances
and decide for corrective action.
Cost Performance Index: If the ratio of earned value to actual value is less than 1, it indicates
cost overrun for the executed activity. To forecast the project cost at completion, cumulative
CPO is calculated by dividing the sum of earned values taken periodically to the individual
actual costs.
Cost Tracking: This tool can help measure job performance and gives an accurate picture of
necessary elements. It can help us define thresholds, allocated additional resources or
suspend work quickly for effective change management. Thus, it acts as an important tool for
cost control and management.

Sustaining and Developing Disciplinary Expertise in Project-Based Organizations
Author: Cecilia Enberg, PhD; Karin Bredin, PhD
Description: What different types of solutions for organizing disciplinary expertise have
developed in project-based firms that rely extensively on interdisciplinary and co-located
project teams?
In Sustaining and Developing Disciplinary Expertise in Project-Based Organizations:
Balanced and Integrated Solutions, authors Cecilia Enberg and Karin Bredin explore the
implications of this question by:
• drawing on multiple works by experts in the field, as well as their own previous research;
• undertaking case studies of three project-based tech companies with different
organizational setups;
• conducting interviews with both management and employees with diverse areas of
expertise (including designers, programmers, and testing specialists);
• recommending the most effective corporate approaches to developing and maintaining
expertise among specialists in both cross-functional and single-discipline teams; and
• offering their insight into areas where further research might be done.

To assess the complexity of
the situation we list down
few areas prone to complexity:

CBD was under complete
lockdown with heavily
fortified zones. In this
article we try to understand
and predict the complexity
that is involved while
setting up the security
infrastructure.
COMPLEXITY:
The first step towards
planning security at the
G20 is assessing the
potential risks & concerns.
This will have a profound
impact on determining
entry criteria, access

activities and sorting their complexity
using common sense and logic
2014 G20 Brisbane Summit
A. Legislative:
Under the G20 (Safety and
Security) Act 2013, Police
officers, non-State police
officers and appointed persons
are provided with special po-
wers to promote the safety and security of
persons attending the G20 meeting. This
Act prevails, to the extent of any
inconsistency, over the Police Powers and
Responsibilities Act 2000 (the Police Act) in
relation to a power conferred, or
responsibility imposed, under the Police
Act on a police officer.
The act imparts unprecedented powers to
security personnel, affecting civic, social
and economical aspects around the
“restricted zones”, thus causing a
complexity in governance.
B. Stakeholders:
Residents, businesses and institutions in
“restricted zones” will be gravely affected
and be forced to conduct in a manner
prescribed by the security arrangements.
Global leaders, regional heads, security
agencies and participating organizations
work cohesively during the course of the
event, in a secure environment under
certain guidelines.

participating nations rely on

TACKLING SECURITY
MANAGEMENT COMPLEXITY
AT G20 MEET
(From the Previous Page)
D. Dynamism:
Coordination between
various security agencies
and their interdependence
for information exchange
hugely impacts on their
synergy and reactions.
The system of system
complexity approach
qualifies the following
systems as autonomous and
independent. Systems such
as Crowd control, Protective
security, Motorcade and
motorcycle escorts, Services,
Road closures, Perimeter
security, Monitoring of
alcohol, drugs and offensive
weapons, Traffic
management, etc.
B. Fractal Behavior:
We can effectively monitor
the dynamic changes and
understand their pattern, to
help us manage the entire
system. Real time threat
assessment can be
monitored and measures
can be taken immediately
as changes occur.
C. Phase Space:
Hotels providing residence
to global leaders are
identified as potential
spaces of threats.
Facilitating security
concerns becomes effective
by pre-determining such
vulnerable areas.
D. Path History:
Since 2008, eight G20 summits
have been conducted and
acquiring their data will
provide valuable insights into
their systems arrangement and
help us plan & place a better
infrastructure.
E. Sense making:
Imparting proper training and
information to stakeholders
and enabling them to interpret
common meaning of directives
and comprehending the
system in a same manner, will
lead to better management
and proper control.

PMI´s definition of VRMS is a system that supports PMI and PMI communities in its ongoing
efforts to further establish a standardized and consistent approach to volunteer relationship
management. In other words, is a tool which helps to manage and control volunteer
opportunities posted by the coordination areas in each PMI Chapter which can be offered to all
current members.
Here is how volunteers can use the VRMS:
1. Review and maintain a profile (Contact Information, Chapters, Certifications, Areas of Interest
and Resume), and service history (PMI Volunteer Service History, Events, Awards, Scholarships).
2. Search for opportunities, see their search results.
3. Read opportunity descriptions.
4. Open, edit, and submit an application.
And, at any time during the application process, they can:
5. View the status of that application.
6. It’s also important to note that the profile and service history follows along with each
application you submit, so there is no need to repeatedly enter this information.
7. Receive application process communication through email messages, throughout the
opportunity application process.
VRMS has context-sensitive help tips embedded in the interface of the application (a little i icon,
which displays helpful text when you mouse over the icon). Additionally, you can click the VRMS
Guides link in the upper right corner navigation to view User Guides.
Also you can send feedback or suggestions to the Volunteer Programs and Services Team at the
email address [email protected] or use [email protected] for questions from customers,
requests for training and questions about using the VRMS. I hope this review would be useful to
know more of VRMS and would like to thank all our current Volunteers for their help and support
in our PMI Adelaide Chapter.

TOOLS FOR COMPLEX
