Outlook

Coaches and sports information directors in the Southland Conference predicted a return trip to the conference tournament for the South-eastern Louisiana volleyball team as the squad reported back to campus Wednesday. The Lady Lions are picked seventh in both the coaches and SID preseason polls released Wednesday by the conference office. Southeastern returns 10 letterwinners and six starters from a squad that finished 11-18 (8-8 Southland) a season ago, advancing to the confer-ence tournament for the first time under head coach Jim Smoot. The annual Green & Gold Match on Aug. 25 marks the conclusion of preseason camp with the Lady Lions opening the 2015 season in Columbia, South Carolina, at the Gamecock Invitational present by Hyatt Place. Southeastern faces host South Carolina on Aug. 28, opening the season, and then plays a pair of matches the following day against N.C. State and North Carolina Central. The tournament is one of three for the Lady Lions prior to the beginning of Southland play. After a trip to Southern Miss (Sept. 1), the Lady Lions open the home portion of their schedule hosting Eastern Washington (Sept. 6)

and Troy (Sept. 7) over Labor Day weekend. Trips to UNLV’s Rebel Challenge and the University of Houston’s Flo Hyman Collegiate Cup are sandwiched around a trip to Louisiana’s capital city of Baton Rouge to take on Southern University (Sept. 15). The Lady Lions open Southland play with matches at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (Sept. 24) and Houston Baptist (Sept. 26) before returning home for their final non-conference contest of

the season, Sept. 29, against UL Lafayette. Southeastern returns to the road for three-consecutive conference matches before finishing up the regular season with eight of its final 11 matches at home. The top eight teams in the Southland Conference standings will compete in the league tournament, scheduled for Nov. 20-22 in Conway, Arkansas.

Coaches

Jim Smoothead coachThird Season at Southeastern louisiana • Pepperdine university, 1979

During Jim Smoot’s first two seasons at the helm of the Southeastern Louisiana volleyball program the Lady Lions have established

much needed consistency, winning double-digit matches for the three straight years and returning to the Southland Conference Tournament this last season. The Lady Lions finished the 2014 season with an 8-8 Southland mark, the program’s most confer-ence victories in a dozen seasons. Mikayla Shippy and Morgan Todd, who both continue to make their marks on Southeastern’s re-cord book, earned conference honors in 2014. Todd was named All-Southland (second team) and Shippy was named to the Southland’s All-Academic squad. A balanced offensive attack, aided by four dif-ferent players with at least two kills per set, and a stingy defense paced Southeastern to a pair of four match win streaks in 2013, including a sweep of the Tangi Tourism Lion Classic. A former head coach at Ohio State, Hawaii, Loyola Marymount and South Alabama, Smoot has made two trips to the Men’s NCAA Division I Final Four and one trip to the Women’s NAIA Final Four. After 14 seasons as the women’s head coach at Westmont College, an NAIA school in Santa Barbara, Calif., Smoot spent the 2012 season as a volunteer assistant for legendary coach John Blair at Tennessee Tech. At Westmont, Smoot took his team to the NAIA national tournament four times. Included in those four appearances is a 1999 trip to the Final Four. Smoot’s coaching experience prior to West-mont includes three years as the women’s head coach at South Alabama (1994-96) where he earned

the Sun Belt Conference Coach of the Year honors in 1995. He has also served as an assistant with the women’s programs at LSU and Michigan. On the men’s side, Smoot served as head coach at Loyola Marymount (1980-81), Ohio State and El Camino Junior College (1982-84), as well as a stint as co-head coach at Hawaii (1985). In 1982 and 1983 his Ohio State teams advanced to the NCAA Final Four. The native of Torrance, Calif., has also coached in the Women’s Professional Volleyball League and a men’s club team in Saudi Arabia. He was head coach for the men’s East Team in the 1982 National Sports Festival and an assistant for the men’s squad at the 1983 World University Games. Smoot began his collegiate playing career at El Camino Junior College, then played two years at Pepperdine where he was named the Most Valuable Player in 1973 and earned a bachelor’s degree in Physcial Education. He resides in Covington, La.

emilyn JordanAssistant coach Third Season at Southeastern louisiana • Southeastern louisiana, 2009

Emilyn Jordan enters her third season as an assistant volleyball coach at her alma mater, helping Southeastern Louisi-ana to its third-straight year with double-digit wins and a return to the Southland Conference Tournament in 2014.

The Lady Lions finished the 2014 season with an 8-8 Southland mark, the program’s most conference victories in a dozen seasons. Mikayla Shippy and Morgan Todd, who both continue to make their marks on Southeastern’s record book, earned conference honors in 2014. Todd was named All-Southland (second team) and Shippy was named to the Southland’s All-Academic squad. Jordan joinied the staff in October of 2013 from Seward County (Kan.) Community College. In her one-plus seasons with SCCC, Jordan helped Seward to a 20-win season and was on the bench for a Lady Saints team that was ranked in the NJCAA Top-20 for the 18th straight season. Seward finished the 2012 season in second place in the Jayhawk West with an 11-3 record, just the second time since the turn of the century that the Lady Saints posted double digit wins in conference action. Jordan, who primarily worked with the Seward hitters, saw three of her players named Jayhawk West All-Conference, including Thayna Silva who was a first team selection. Jordan came to Seward County from Sweeny, Texas, where she coached a number of different club teams with AVA (Absolute Volleyball Academy). She was the assistant coach for the 17Rox and head coach for the 13Blocks and 14select teams. In 2011, Jordan coached at Sewanee, University of the South (NCAA Division III), in Tennessee. While at Sewanee she helped turn the program around by quadrupling the team’s win total from the 2010 season. In 2010, Jordan started her coaching career at Christian Life Academy in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. She served as the Crusaders JV Head Coach and Varsity Assistant Coach. Jordan graduated from Southeastern Louisiana University in 2009 with a Bachelor of Science degree with a focus on Kinesiology-Sports Management. A four-year letterwinner in volleyball at Southeastern, she was named team captain her sophomore year.

larry SmootVolunteer Assistant coachThird Season at Southeastern louisiana

Larry Smoot, brother of Southeastern head volleyball coach Jim Smoot, is the Lady Lions’ volunteer assistant coach. The Lady Lions have earned double-digit wins in each of his two seasons on the staff and, in 2014, made a return

to the Southland Conference Tournament. With an 8-8 Southland mark, the squad earned the most conference victories for the program in the last 12 years. Mikayla Shippy and Morgan Todd, who both continue to make their marks on Southeastern’s record book, earned conference honors in 2014. Todd was named All-Southland (second team) and Shippy was named to the Southland’s All-Academic squad. An assistant coach for 20 seasons at Loyola Marymount, Smoot helped LMU to 11 postseason appearances and three West Coast Conference Championships. Smoot began his coaching career at Torrance High School with the boys’ volleyball program in 1980. He added the girls’ team to his coaching duties in 1984 and led them to national rankings in 1986 (No. 12) and 1987 (No. 10). His girls’ program captured the Bay League Championship from 1985 through 1987. Smoot has served as the Head Coach and Owner of the South Bay Girls’ Volleyball Club and as Head Coach for

the Torrance Volleyball Club (boys). His South Bay 18-and-under club team has advanced to the Kaepa Festival Tournament Final Four in four of the last 10 years and won the championship in 1993. During the summer of 2006, Smoot coached the South Bay 18-1s to a bronze medal at the American Division Junior National Champi-onships in Atlanta, Ga. He previously led the Torrance club to a second place finish at the USVB Junior Olympics in 1983. Smoot was honored in 1996 with the Distinguished Service Award for Junior Volleyball by the Kaepa Volleyball Festival. Season-by-Season Results

On December 10, 2013, the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I Committee on Infractions has accepted summary disposition of the infractions case originally self-reported by Southeastern Louisiana University almost one year ago, largely agreeing to the penalties self-imposed by the university. As a result of an extensive self-investigation, the university

self-reported to the NCAA that 137 student-athletes competed without meeting eligibility requirements between the academic years of 2005-2006 through 2009-2010, with a majority of the violations occurring in 2005-2006 and 2006-2007. Most of the student-athletes failed to meet academic eligibility requirements to compete under NCAA rules. 86 percent of the student-athletes identified in the case went on to graduate from Southeastern or left the university in good academic standing. Ath-letics staff members responsible for academic advising and eligibility certification during the time of the violations are no longer associated with the university. No current student-athlete at Southeastern participated while ineligible. Southeastern self-imposed penalties include vacating victories in which ineligible student-athletes participated, scholarship reductions, and imposition of a two-year probationary period. The NCAA extended the probationary period to four years and ordered Southeastern to pay a financial penalty of $25,000. The probation terms do not include any postseason bans. Following identification of the infractions, Southeastern has imple-mented corrective actions that include the appointment of an assistant to the president for athletics compliance, the addition of a new compliance coordinator, the implementation of academic tracking software to strengthen the certification

process and streamline monitoring, changes in the eligibility certification process to include oversight by institutional offices outside the Athletics Department, enhanced rules training of athletics coaches and staff, and implementation of new procedures to improve academic advising of student-athletes. “We are pleased to put resolution of this case behind us. These infrac-tions occurred years ago, and current coaches, staff and administration are abso-lutely committed to ongoing compliance with all NCAA rules,” stated Athletics Director Jay Artigues. On April 9, 2015, The NCAA Committee on Infractions finalized an infractions case for violations stemming from June to July 2013. As a result of the case, Southeastern’s probation period has been extended for one year, ending on December 9, 2018. Southeastern self-repoted that a former volleyball coach had engaged in impermissible athletically-related activity and impermissible lodging and tryouts for prospective student-athletes. “Southeastern Louisiana University received final confirmation by the NCAA Infractions Committee that stemmed from self-reported violations related to recruiting and practice irregularities in the university’s women’s volley-ball program during the spring and summer 2013,” Artigues said. “The university self-reported the five violations to the NCAA following a thorough internal investigation, which led to the resignation of the then-Head Volleyball Coach. Southeastern has accepted the penalties and corrective actions imposed by the NCAA. “Our athletics program is committed to complete compliance with all NCAA rules and legislation,” Artigues added. “Intentional disregard for this responsibility will be dealt with firmly and swiftly.”
