OFFICIAL BEER SPONSOR

Pale Ale’s unique piney and grapefruit aromas from the use of whole-cone American hops have fascinated beer drinkers for decades.

Back Porch Lager was created by the Blues & Brews staff at a unique ‘one-of-a-kind’ Beer Camp weekend, this lager is available exclusively at the festival.

Hop Hunter IPA harnesses the complex flavors of just-picked hops through an all-new method of steam distilling wet hops before they even leave the fields.

Nooner’s brilliant golden color begs you to take a sip and sink your taste buds into an extremely welcoming beer, full of flavor and balanced by a crisp, dry finish.

Oktoberfest beer, true to the roots of the festival, that’s deep golden in color and rich with complex malt flavor from the use of traditional German Steffi barley.

Inspired by traditional Bavarian techniques. With a full, fruity aroma and notes of spicy clove and banana bread, Kellerweis is a truly unique brew.

Torpedo Extra IPA, featuring our “Hop Torpedo,” is an aggressive yet balanced beer with massive hop aromas of citrus, pine, and tropical fruit.

daryl priceI started painting in 2005 after contracting a neurological dis-ease called Complex regional Pain Syndrome (formerly known as Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy). I used painting to deal with the chronic severe pain caused by the illness. I started selling my work professionally in 2008. The subject matter of my work consists mainly of jazz and blues musicians and scenes from 1930/40’s America. African American history plays a big part in my work. I use no reference when I paint, even though it is mostly realism. I emphasize bright colors and movement; oc-casionally I use distortion for effect. My knowledge of human anatomy stems from a long career as a competitive bodybuilder and powerlifter. Since I’m self-taught, my techniques create a unique, signature style. I consider my artistic ability a God giv-en gift that helps me cope with the pain of illness. I hope my work gives other people a sense of the joy I feel from painting.

THE Comedians

STEPHEN AGYEI Stephen Agyei is one of the fastest rising stars in comedy today, be-hind a mischievous style industry veteran Lamont Ferguson once memorably described as “calcu-lated fearlessness.” The Denver based comic has featured at clubs coast to coast and opened for pre-mier performers such as Dave Chappelle and Mitch Fatel.

TROY WALKER Troy Walker has quickly be-come one of Denver’s most sought-after comedians, a designation he’d dismiss with a modest scoff, despite its ac-curacy. A regular at Comedy Works, Walker has won the Comedy Works “New Faces” contest twice.

Walker has had the plea-sure of opening for some of the most prominent comedi-ans in the country and also serves as a fine ambassador of Denver comedy at national and local comedy festivals and on the Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson. After witness-ing his storytelling abilities and commanding presence on-stage it should come as no sur-prise that he’s also a licensed attorney who graduated from The University of Denver’s Sturm College of Law.

BRENT GILL >>Brent Gill knew he would be a performer the first time he felt the heat of a roomful of eyes on his bare genitalia on stage. (It’s a long story and a sealed court docu-ment). While merely a teenager, Brent was a steel worker by day and exotic dancer by night. His goal: Immortality. However, a lingering knee injury suffered dur-ing a particularly erotic shimmy to Ginuwine’s “Pony,” as well as an expanding waistline made it clear that Brent Gill’s dancing days neared an end. Initially his attempts at nude, comedic, inter-pretive dance failed, but he quick-ly found confidence behind the mic as a more traditional standup comedian. Though slightly less

erotic than his previous endeav-ors, Brent’s on stage charisma and energy will leave audiences aroused and entranced.

“Brent is a MUST SEE live act” says Urban Life magazine and the Boulder Weekly describes him as “the love child of Chris Farley and Win-nie the Pooh.”

ADAM CAYTON-HOLLANDAdam Cayton-Holland is a national touring comic and was named one of Esquire’s “25 Comics to Watch.,” as well as one of “10 Comics to Watch” by Variety. Along with his

cohorts in The Grawlix, he is one of the creators and stars of the TrU TV sitcom. Adam lives with a Chesapeake retriever named Annabel Lee, once threw out the opening pitch at a Colorado rockies game, and people have described him as “genial” and “with pretty decent teeth.”

THE MUSIC

Let the good reverend and his band, featuring Breezy Peyton on washboard and Ben russell on drums, sanctify you with their punky, electrified country blues. This trio raises hell on stage, as one blown-away club owner once observed after taking in a show. Their new record, So Delicious, on Yazoo records, finds Rev. Peyton on a label that celebrates country blues and early American music artists. Like his favorite artists growing up, Charley Patton and Mississippi John Hurt, he’s an authentic purveyor of this gritty, honest form of the blues. With contemporary lyrics, incredible energy and serious chops, rev. Peyton’s Damn Big Band will have you stomping up dust in no time.

BLACKBERRY SMOKE >>The pantheon of kickass bands that hails from the steamy South is deep and we’re over the moon about having Blackberry Smoke on our line-up this year. The Allman Brothers started it and Atlanta’s Blackberry Smoke has emerged as a band of equally enormous stature. Just ask none other than Gregg Allman who declared, “That band is gonna put Southern rock back on the map.” For the five musicians who comprise the hard rocking, coun-try-inflected, blues-driven band that’s been playing more than 200 gigs a year since their inception in

2000, it’s all about the well-crafted song. They grew up listening to The Beatles, Stones and Aeros-mith and strive for that kind of ex-cellence. “We’re always trying to come up with songs and records

that are as good as the ones that we grew up with,” drummer Brit Turner explains. To this we say, “Turn it up.”

His mesmerizing, hypnotic brand of blues draws the lis-tener into a songbook of hard luck, race, love gone wrong and all of life’s confounding dilemmas, choices and con-sequences. His latest record, Hey Joe Opus/red Meat on his own Trance Blues label, is a 10-song suite meant to taken in as a whole. “Hey Joe,” pop-ularized by Jimi Hendrix and written by Billy roberts is a re-curring theme, musically and morally, and Taylor brings in guest musicians Langhorne Slim, Warren Haynes and Billy Nershi to give further complexity to Taylor’s ideas. A true visionary and a compel-ling artist, Otis Taylor is living, breathing blues history. Let him take you on his journey.

THE MUSIC

RICH ROBINSONrich robinson has shed his Crowe feathers and is soaring with his solo career. robinson, with his brother Chris, founded the powerful, Southern psyche-delic blues-rock band The Black Crowes in the 1980’s, bowling rock fans over with their power and badass rock attitude. rich’s songs and riff-heavy guitar play-ing were the engine that kept the Crowes in flight until they went on hiatus in 2013, officially call-ing an end to the band earlier this year. Not to worry. rich’s new record The Ceaseless Sight – his third solo effort - puts his former band in the rearview mirror. He’s moving forward, and has given us

a brilliant collection of songs that rolling Stone magazine’s David Fricke described as a, “lyrically spiritual, musically earthy balance of electric-blues, bravado, psy-chedelic-country exploration and almost courtly vocal cool.” It’s the kind of sound that goes straight to the heart when experienced live.

that unique vantage point, they saw an America that troubled them. Their new album, Space Is The Place, casts an eye to the future, where collective energy is harnessed to create change and where tolerance and compas-sion rule the day. It’s a compel-ling, musical statement that quite frankly rocks on so many levels. Live, they are mesmerizing and far-out. We dig ‘em. A lot.

It’s soul time! Here’s a fine pairing for those of you who like your soul deep, your jams deeply grooved and your booty always moving. Monophonics are on the fore-front of the neo-soul movement that has swept the country. Brassy, funky and heartfelt, the Mono-phonics’ sound is fresh, bright and energetic. They’re teaming up with the young French soul sensa-tion Ben L’Oncle Soul (born Ben

Duterde), whose trademark bow-tie makes him look a bit like the man whose countenance graces packages of Uncle Ben’s rice – hence his stage name, slightly al-tered. He’s phenomenal. He sings in French and English and he’s a perfect match for the Mono-phonics. Get your soul on!

MONOPHONICS WITH SPECIAL GUEST BEN L’ONCLE SOUL

His guitar wails and cries and his voice is as warm and in-viting as a front porch swing on a muggy, Southern night. Tab Benoit is a gifted guitar-ist, a passionate singer and a songwriter with a conscience. In “A Whole Lotta Soul,” co-written with Anders Osborne on the album Medicine, he laments environmental deg-radation at the hand of man, a plaintive ode to the natu-ral world crisply punctuated with his incisive guitar solos. Tab Benoit is a staunch de-fender of Louisiana’s coastal wetlands, a crucial habitat to numerous bird and aquatic species and a steadily erod-ing, natural defense against the increasingly fierce storms that batter the Gulf coast. His group, Voice of the Wetlands All-Stars, tours the country to raise money and awareness for the non-profit he established in 2004. A list of band’s members read like a Who’s Who of New Orleans music with Johnny Sansone, Big Chief Monk Boudreaux, Cyril Neville and other luminaries joining forces to protect the place they love and call home. Now that’s a whole lotta soul.

The Johnson County Coroners do not believe in luck, but rather that fortune favors the bold. They also believe in pure unabashed rock and roll. This belief is reflected in the high energy sound of this 5 piece Blues/rock band established in Montrose, CO. The sound

they produce is a fiery blend of Texas Blues, Mississippi Delta Blues, Colorado Blues and good old fashion “Cold-Steel-Blues”.

You can hear it in his molten voice, one that sounds like lonesome prairies and whis-key-soaked juke joints. You can hear it in the warm wash of his guitar, which he plays solely off the fret board, pull-ing and hammering each fuzzy lick. You can hear it in his songs, self-penned tunes that are redolent of blues-infused rock – think ZZ Top, Junior Kimbrough or Jimmy reed. And when he’s played his last note, you’ll want more.

TAJ MAHAL TRIOit shoulD come as little surprise that a performer with his Depth, unDerstanDing anD multiple influences grew up in a musical family. World music flowed from the family’s ra-dio and their home was often filled with his musician father’s cohorts from Africa, the Caribbean and across the United States. Stories of his parent’s African and West In-dian heritage further cemented the young Henry Saint Claire Frederick’s affinity for music. (Taj Mahal is his stage name – it came to him in a dream.)

As much as music flows through his veins, his twin passion is farming and growing his own food, a path that he could have just as easily followed. In college, he studied agriculture, but it was music that commanded his full attention.

His career stretches back to the late 1950s when he first started gigging and has continued without pause until today. He incorporates elements of blues, reggae, jazz, calypso, gospel and r&B into a dis-tinctive style that is as much a musical his-tory lesson as it is a look at his family tree. His collaborations are numerous and in-clude brilliant recorded work with the likes of ry Cooder, Eric Clapton, The rolling Stones and Ali Farka Touré.

Duane and Gregg’s band, the first of its kind in the “Southern rock” genre, helped define the sound of their generation. Landmark albums such as, Idlewild South, Eat A Peach and At Fillmore East burnished their reputation as a fantastic live act. The band had become deft practitioners of soulful, bluesy rock, honed by lean years on the road. Losing first Duane, than bassist Berry Oakley, though devastat-ing, only served to steel the remaining band mem-bers’ resolve to play on. Decades later, The Allman Brothers Band played their swan song series of shows at the Beacon Theatre in New York this year, but that did not spell the end of the musician’s life for key-boardist and songwriter, Gregg.

In memoriam

The king

Bena, a speck on the rural Mis-sissippi landscape and worked hard from an early age. He built his first guitar from cotton bailing wire and got his first taste of the blues from his uncle, the great bluesman Bukka White, and from listening to his aunt’s Blind Lemon Jefferson records. He knew hardship, he knew racism, he knew poverty, and he knew the brutal labor that is working in the cotton fields. But young Riley was drawn to the juke joints where jazz and pretty women filled the room and before long, he was in Memphis, perfecting the conver-sation he created between guitar and voice, voice and guitar.

His iconic, voluptuous black Gibson semi hollow King named Lucille, was his instrument of choice and when B.B.’s second Blues and Brews appearance fell

riley B. King, better known as B.B. King, will always be known as the undisputed King of the Blues. The great guitar-ist – who’s distinctive bent-string sound influenced countless musi-cians from Eric Clapton to Gary Clarke Jr. to Billy Gibbons – passed away this year at the age of 89. A tireless performer who played more than 200 nights a year well into his 70s, King graced the Telluride Blues and Brews Stage twice (2004 and 2010) in his illustrious career. So impressed was the blues legend with Telluride, he remarked, “Out of the 90 different coun-tries I’ve been to, I’ve never seen anything more beautiful than what you have here.”

King’s road was long and of-ten not easy. The great-grandson of a slave, King was born in Itta

near his September 16 birthday, festival staff honored him with a cake in Lucille’s form. Not only did King hold the crowd in the palm of his hand, but also those who were fortunate to be able to meet him and spend some time in his easy company. TBB Festival Director, Steve Gum-ble counts himself lucky to be among them.

“I am not one of those star struck people,” Steve said. “How-ever, when BB came to town for the first time I knew I had to take a moment to actually sit down and say thank you for coming to our little ole festival. I ended up spending over an hour with him on his bus (along with Elvin Bish-op) because he just wanted to talk and tell stories. I have never met a more kind and gentle souled man in my entire festival career.”
