Giving In the rush of the holiday season time to spend volunteering may be hard to come by, but don’t discount the “gift” of the ability to give. Your favorite organization may be depending on it!By: Doug Arlt, Palouse Habitat for Humanity Board President
One of my favorite Bible verses is Romans 12:6 which says “We have differ-ent gifts, according to the grace given to each of us. If your gift is prophesying, then prophesy in accordance with your faith; if it is serving, then serve; if it is teaching, then teach; if it is to encourage, then give encouragement; if it is giving, then give generously; if it is to lead, do it diligently; if it is to show mercy, do it cheerfully.” Dictionary.com says that a gift is “a special ability or capacity; natural endowment; talent;” At Palouse Habitat for Humanity the gifts of our volunteers are always on display. I am regularly inspired by the ways our volunteers serve, teach, encourage, lead and show mercy. They build, manage the Surplus Sale, guide and grow our organization by serving on the board or a committee. These are all wonderful gifts! But how many times have we considered giving as a “gift”? Sending a financial gift to your favorite charity may not seem like much, but the Bible tells us that the capability to make such a donation is a special ability. Our volunteers are truly the heart and soul of our organization. But the lifeblood of what we do comes from our donors. Habitat could not build or repair a single home without them both.

Gifts Given in Honor or MemoryGifts were made in honor of Connie Hall and in celebration of the Lee and Pike Wedding
Gifts continue to be made in memory of Ken Hall, former Palouse Habitat for Humanity construction supervisor. Ken passed away March 17, 2013, following a brief battle with pancreatic cancer. As it happened, it was the same day Habitat volunteers werecelebrating the completion of his final Habitat home build. To date, $3,460 has been received in his memory. These funds have been used to purchase and maintain a box truck for the Surplus Sale to offer pick-up and delivery service, expanding our ability to serve. Ken was a community builder in every sense; not only through his work, but also through his service with a variety of organizations, including Moscow Rotary and Palouse Habitat. Ken is always close in the hearts and minds of those of us at Habitat.

Gary G. Dicus, 70, passed away Jan. 16, 2014, at his home in Palouse. The son of Glen and Evelyn (Anderson) Dicus, he attended schools in Palouse and graduated in 1961. He was mechanically gifted, enjoyed
working with small engines and machinery. He first worked on his Uncle Edgar Anderson's farm, and then, after graduating from Spokane
Community College with a machinist Associate of Arts degree, he worked for JE Love Co in Garfield and Tupelo, Mississippi, and then the
Benchcraft Furniture Company. In 1994, Gary returned to Palouse. He was a faithful member of the Federated Church, serving as a custodian for
five years, as a member of the choir and a church board member. He is survived by family and friends throughout Palouse and Garfield.

Dean HuberHabitat volunteer and active Palouse community member Dean Huber passed away June 13, 2014. He was born in 1944, grew up in Tacoma, WA, and graduated from Franklin Pierce High School in 1962. We went on to earn bachelors and masters degrees in Forestry from the University of Idaho. He and Karen Wysong were married in 1968 and raised three children, Kevin, Heather and Naomi. Dean was the proud grandparent of seven grandchildren and one great grandchild. Over his career, he provided technical assistance for lumber companies around the region. He owned and operated Huber Consulting, and later worked for the USDA Forest Service in California as a program manager for forest products utilization, and later program coor-dinator in New England for the Northeastern Area. After retirement, he and Karen moved to Palouse to be close to family and friends, where he was active in the community. One of his many volunteer positions was as the Palouse Habitat community liaison. His service was greatly appreciated by those of us at Habitat!

Update Graves HomePalouse Habitat volunteers are building at a good pace. As I write, drywall is being taped and mudded, to be followed by painting as early as next week. To meet our Thrivent grant deadline, requiring a certificate of occupancy by Dec. 31 to receive our grant funding, we approached professional painters to help us finish in time. We expect to complete the home within the next few months! Watch the next newsletter for an announcement about the Home Dedication for Amy & Sophia!
