Friday’s game will be the first time both Millikin and EIU’s women’s basketball teams will meet on the court. The Panthers look to start the season on a high note much like last season’s 77-71 overtime victory over IUPUI in EIU’s season opener. EIU will attempt to avenge last season’s 3-25 finish and head back to the OVC tournament after finishing the season with a 2-14 OVC record and missing out on the tournament for the first time since the 2006-07 season. NEW YEAR NEW DYNAMIC This will once again be a very young Panther women’s basketball team with only three upperclassmen on the roster. Erica Brown, who was one of the team’s top performers last season, is the squad’s lone senior this year. Four Panthers from last year’s freshmen class return to the team this year including breakout Halle Stull who started in 20 games her freshman season. Carmen Tellez, Brittin Boyer, Karina Chandra, and Stull will be looked to even more this season to help guide the young squad. Head coach Debbie Black added four freshmen to the team to fill in some of the gaps after losing five players from last year. LOST BUT NOT GONE Despite losing some key players from last year’s squad the Panthers manage to return the majority of their key producers on the court. Erica Brown led the team last year in points, rebounds, and blocks hoping to have an even greater impact in her final season at EIU. Also returning to the squad is Grace Lennox who ran point for the Panther offense and far-and- away led the team in minutes played and assists last year. INSIDE THE NUMBERS

Debbie Black enters her fourth season as head coach of the Eastern Illinois women’s basketball team. Black was hired May 16, 2013 to take over the program following a long career as an assistant coach, most recently at Ohio State. While with the Buckeyes program Black helped coach the team to seven straight NCAA Tournament appearances including six Big Ten Conference Championships. Black has been part of 34 winning basketball seasons both as a player and a coach. She began her playing career at Saint Joseph’s University helping the Hawks make four straight NCAA Tournament appearances. After graduation in 1988, she played professionally overseas in Tasmania (1989-96). She played in the WNBA from 1999-2005 earning WNBA Defensive Player of the Year honors. Nicknamed “The Pest” Black is the only women’s professional player to record a quadruple double with 10 points, 14 rebounds, 12 assists and 10 steals in a game. Black’s career record is 25-61, 16-32 in OVC games.

The Panthers closed out their 2015-16 season falling to SIU Edwardsville to earn a 3-25 overall record while going 2-14 in OVC play. EIU struggled to get back in the win column after winning their season opener over IUPUI in overtime 77-71. The team appeared to get back on track late in the season eventually snapping their losing streak by winning their first two games in Feb. over Southeast Missouri and Austin Peay. The Panthers nearly swept their last major home stand of the season following the wins over both the Redhawks and the Governors forcing Murray State into overtime, but eventually dropped the game 74-71.

Millikin travels to Charleston to take on the Panthers for the first time in both school’s histories. Millikin finished last season with a 9-16 record going 2-12 in the CCIW. The Big Blue lost their leading player from last season to graduation, but return their next leading scorer in Emily Schultz. Schultz finished the year averaging 9.4 points and 3.4 rebounds per game.

This game marks the first ever meeting between EIU and Millikin.

• Erica Brown heads into her senior season looking to cement her name in the record books at EIU. Currently Brown is fifth on the all-time career blocks list at EIU with 116 blocks to her name throughout her three years as a Panther. Last season Brown tallied 43 blocks to lead the team and rank fourth in the OVC for total blocks and blocks per game.

• Blocks won’t be the only thing to keep an eye on in regards to Erica Brown this season as the senior looks to join an exclusive club at EIU. The Hoyleton, Ill. native will vie to become the 15th member of the 600 rebound club in her last year at EIU. So far in her three seasons Brown has accumulated 487 total rebounds. While it may seem like she has a long way to go to reach 600, last year she recorded 195 rebounds to lead the team.

• Junior Grace Lennox has the opportunity to break into the record books as well this season. The Panthers’ assist leader for past two seasons, she has recorded 238 assists in her two-year career. If the Tasmania native can continue her assist prowess this season she could break into the top-10 career assist list at EIU. Tracy Roller (1989-92) currently maintains the No. 10 position with 364 career assists. Lennox can surpass Roller if she has a similar season as last year where she recorded 130 assists.

• Jalisha Smith looks to keep the momentum going from the end of last season. Smith earned her first career starts in the last eight games of the season averaging 7.4 points and 5.5 rebounds over that span. In that time she also set new career highs recording 11 rebounds against Murray State and 14 points against SIU Edwardsville.

• EIU’s freshman class this season features all out of state players that have the potential to make an immediate impact for the Panthers. This year’s team will feature freshman from Ohio (Zharia Lenoir), Missouri (Danielle Berry), Indiana (Allison Van Dyke, and Wisconsin (Jennifer Nehls).

• Halle Stull leads this year’s sophomore class after her breakout season last year in which she started 20 games as a true freshman. Stull was second only to Erica Brown for rebounds and blocked shots on the year even ranking ninth in the OVC for blocked shots per game. The Rockford, Ill. native averaged 7.8 points per game her freshman season.
