GRAVINA YEAR-BY-YEAR

ROOKIE SCORING: Through the first nine games, Western has seen 19 occurrences of double-digit scoring, 10 of those have come from two freshmen... Michelle Maher is tied for the team lead with six (and tied for lead with two games of 20-plus points) and Charnelle Reed is right behind with four... Reed opened the year with three straight in double-figures (season-high 19 at Missouri) and followed with 10 against William Woods... Maher scored 10 in the first two games, then a season-high 22 points at SIU Edwardsville and versus William Woods. She also scored 10 at Loyola.

NATIONALLY SPEAKING: According to the latest national statistics (through games of Dec. 9), Western ranks 23rd in the country averaging 7.6 3-point field goals per game... Western stands 64th in assists per game (15.0) and 27th overall averaging just 13.7 personal fouls.

3-POINT RECORD MATCHED: Earlier this season, and the second time in JD Gravina’s tenure, Western set a program record hitting 15 3-point field goals... Western drained 15 in the home-opening win versus Clarke, matching the total set last year against Oakland.

MORE FROM LONG DISTANCE: A balanced attack from long range is the main reason why Western is the nation’s 23rd team shooting the 3-pointer this season (through stats on Dec. 9)... Saule Kontautaite leads with a 2.11 average per game, followed by Michelle Maher at 2.0 per game... Nine of the 13 Leathernecks that have attempted a ‘3’ this year have hit at least one... After setting the season record last year for most ‘3s’, Western’s current 3-point total of 68 is now just 37 shy of tying for 10th place on the ‘Top 10’.

10 ‘3s’ a GOOD INDICATOR: When Western has made 10 3-pointers in a game during the JD Gravina era, it’s a good chance the Leathernecks will come away with a win... Of the six times Western made at least 10 ‘3s’ in a game, it holds a 4-2 record, and is 3-0 at Western Hall... The wins include: 10 vs. Hannibal-LaGrange in Gravina’s debut, program-record 15 vs. Oakland last year and against Clarke this season, and 11 in the tournament win over Oral Roberts last year.

SUMMIT LEAGUE STATS: Western Illinois leads The Summit League in 3-point FG made (68), assists (15.0) and blocked shots (4.7), second in steals (8.7), and fourth in points scored (62.7)... Kontautaite is third in 3-point field goals (2.1 p/g) while Michelle Maher is fifth (2.0 p/g)... Ashley Luke and Rachel Evans are tied for fifth averaging 1.1 blocked shots per game, and Maher is tied for 10th at 0.7 bpg... Karis Phillips ranks second among the league leaders with a 3.2 assist/turnover ratio, with Rebecca Henricson tied for ninth at 1.4... Henricson’s 3.6 assists per game ties her for third.

3-POINT LEADERS: A pair of Western Illinois seniors are looking rewrite the ca-reer ‘Top 10’ record book for 3-point field goals. Kontautaite has 86 in her career, four shy of Michelle Nason for seventh place... Salvatori hit a 3-pointer at Southeast Missouri, tying her for ninth place all-time with 77 (Erica Zielinski and Laura Reeves).

SAULE HITS SEASON-HIGH: Senior Saule Kontautaite scored a then-team season-high 23 points in the win over Valparaiso. THE LAST TIME...

SCOUTING THE PANTHERS: Eastern Illinois is playing its second game in three days, traveling to Wisconsin on Saturday... This marks the 50th meeting all-time between the former conference rivals, Western’s most-played opponent. They had an 11-year series hiatus until last year... Eastern fell to 5-4 overall following a 76-47 defeat at Wisconsin on Saturday... Ta’Kenya Nixon and Sydney Mitchell led the scoring with eight points each... The Panthers shot only 28 percent from the field, but committed just eight turnovers... EIU was also out-rebounded by 18 (46-28)... Mariah King leads the scoring at 13.7 points per game, followed by Nixon at 13 ppg... Nixon also leads in assists (44) and steals (23)... Eastern’s only other game against a Summit League member was a 71-60 overtime win over IUPUI at home... Western faces its second straight Ohio Valley Conference opponent, and third this season looking for its first victory (0-2 at SIU Edwardsville and Southeast Missouri).

SUMMIT LEAGUE ADDS NEW MEMBER FOR 2013-14: The Summit League announced the decision to add the University of Denver to the league, starting in 2013-14... That brings the total membership to 10... Western Illinois is the only charter member of the Summit League (Mid-Continent Conference) remaining.
