Dear Friends,

It is my honor to serve as chairman of the Manners of the Heart Board of Directors and work together with my fellow committed board members to oversee the management and mission advancement at MOH. This annual report gives us one more opportunity to thank you for your support and reflect on the impact MOH is having in the hearts of individuals. Our mission continues, and our organization is stronger than ever, due to your past and continued involvement. Simply put, your support is working. Manners of the Heart closes another year feeling blessed as more and more lives are changed and our organization grows.

Our year once again had us working with 15 schools, 100’s of educators, over 11,000 students and thousands of families in the East Baton Rouge Parish School systems. As our work continues, the progress becomes more evident and the results speak for themselves. Teacher’s report improvement in each of the 37 behaviors measured during the year, with an average improvement of over 20 percentage points. Although our main focus is the local School System, we continue to be contacted from other parts of the United States, and this year we expanded our reach in Oklahoma and Texas schools. We are excited to train program facilitators in those locations and look forward to what the future holds.

As you are well aware, this past year brought new challenges to our city. Through corporate sponsorship and substantial media support, we launched #BRRespect to assist in meeting those challenges. You can be proud to be part of an organization that could meet an immediate need while never losing sight of fulfilling the needs of ongoing programs.

As you read this report and reflect on the year with us, we encourage you to continue working with us to move Manners forward. Your support does not go unrecognized and we are very thankful for it.

With warmest thanks,

D. John Davis Jr.Chairman of the Board

As a graduate of Leaders by Example, I will help others find their purpose in life. I will encourage others to be the best they could possibly be and help mold the world one strong heart at a time.

High School Student, Leaders by Example participant

Respect is important because it shows that one values another as an individual and honors the other person’s personal rights. If you respect others you can have a healthy life because these healthy relationships make the world a better place to live.

Manners of the Heart provides a grade level curriculum for children Pre-K through 5th grade taught by classroom teachers as core subject. Our research indicates that educating the whole child results in academic gains, decreases in discipline issues, and measured improvement in character traits including: empathy, respect, self-control and cooperation. Through professional development training, MOH teachers master classroom management which in turn creates a school culture of respect-the ideal environment for learning.

As of today, our discipline referrals are down 67% from last year. Our students love the lessons. Our staff loves the results of students internalizing the character traits. As the principal, I love the positive impact that MOH has brought to our school.

FAMILIES

Through weekly Home Connection letters and parenting workshops in our schools, Manners of the Heart informs parents of the lessons taught at school and how to reinforce at home. MOH equips parents and families with lessons and tools to help them raise kind, forgiving, compassionate children who will grow up to become respectful, responsible adults who choose to serve others.

One of our parent participants gave us a clear picture of today’s parenting problem in her response to our question, “Why did you choose to attend a parent workshop?” Her reply: “Nobody parented me, I raised myself. I want to teach my son how to make good choices. I want to get it right.”

This was an excellent workshop. The most important thing I learned is that punishment serves the parent, but discipline benefits the child.

MOH Parenting class taught me that I must consider daily who I am teaching my child to become!

This workshop helped me understand the importance of remaining patient and honest. We should stand our ground and not let guilt or fear take over.

COMMUNITIES

#BRRespect is Baton Rouge’s first community respect movement and we were proud to lead the charge at Manners of the Heart. This movement was started to combat the increasing level of disrespect and lack of civility present in our community. Of course we all know that this is a national problem.

The majority of Americans reported they feel the lack of civility is a critical problem – one of the most significant problems in America needs to be addressed.

What is the foundation of a great community? RESPECT, mutual, abiding respect. Clear and simple, “I’ve got your back” kind of thinking. When understanding and respect are the foundation for working together, a cohesively diverse community can be created! One that meets disrespect with respect. One that gives respect and gains respect!

Webster’s defines community as a unified body of individuals. When we put aside our differences and strive toward the common goal of building a great city, we can become a real community.

We know that something must be done, and we have been thrilled to see the business owners, community leaders, and concerned citizens recognize that #BRRespect can be the beginning of the solution in confronting the lack of respect and civility in our society.

We are grateful that you are willing to get involved and partner with us in this important endeavor.

Our message to Choose Respect touched the hearts of individual Baton Rouge citizens an estimated 1.1 million times each MONTH.

BUSINESS

Five Star Ford Trainings

During a series of 8 training sessions throughout the year, TBOM worked with 280 employees and managers at Five Star Ford in Fort Worth, Texas. This work continues and has expanded to 5 dealerships in the Fort Worth area.

Through The Business of Manners®, Manners of the Heart assists businesses in securing a strong foundation by integrating core values and emphasizing servant leadership.

The Baton Rouge General

The Business of Manners® was honored to work with 185 individuals at The Baton Rouge General’s Leadership Conference on the topics of Closing the Generation Gap and Engaging the Hearts of Your Team.

• The attitude of respect changed from one generation to the next and how that affects today’s workplace. The good news is that when we listen rather than criticize, we can learn valuable lessons from each other that strengthen us as individuals and as employees which ultimately improves the culture of the workplace and level of customer service.

• Are incentives effective in motivating employees to give their best? Incentives are short-term fixes that don’t yield long-term solutions. Employees must be inspired, not incentivized to give their all. Let’s give employees an opportunity to be a part of something bigger than themselves.

Society for Human Resource

Management & Association for

Talent Development

In a SHRM & ATD joint annual meeting, TBOM shared an important message titled, “Respecting our Differences”. To treat others with respect means understanding we may look different or act different on the outside, but we all have the same heart needs on the inside. We explored how to use our differences to draw us closer rather than push us apart.

I see how much work is taking place and the deep thought process a lot of our people are giving to our culture. I am excited about our future. Manners of the Heart will continue to be a big part of our success, and success to me is when we win the hearts of our people and change their lives by creating an environment where they can LOVE their jobs!! When that happens great things will follow.

Terry Rich, Chief Operating Officer Pack Automotive Group, Fort Worth, TX

RoyOMartin

MOH is proud to be a part of RoyOMartin’s annual leadership training program for 5 years, by facilitating The Business of Dining. This tutorial meal training provides participants with the knowledge necessary to handle business meals and social events with grace and ease.

Page 9: 2016-2017 ANNUAL REPORT · Raising Respectful Children in a Disrespectful World and Raising Unselfish Children in a Self-Absorbed World, both authored by founder, Jill Rigby Garner,

The truth is, focusing on RESPECT is not a new concept. George Washington’s Rules of Civility and Decent Behavior written in 1748 when he was 16 years old had a common focus on other people rather than the narrow focus of self-interest. They were small sacrifices that we should all be willing to make for the good of our fellow man and the sake of living together. His rules proclaimed respect for others that give the gift of self-respect.

In the absence of respect, people hurt other people emotionally and physically. More often than not, it’s not personal, but a wrong attitude that has come from wrong thinking. Often there are systems in play that tolerate or even promote disrespectful behavior.

Not all disrespect ends in violence, but all violence begins with disrespect. This is the critical reason for the work of Manners of the Heart.

At Manners of the Heart, we know it’s the attitude behind the action that determines the action. Our vision is that we can build a world where the attitude behind the action reflects respect.

When we Choose Respect, our children and teens will be filled with optimism, encouragement and hope, not rage and disrespect for others.

This is just the beginning, if you’ll…

CHOOSE RESPECT!

From my heart to yours,

Jill Rigby Garner Executive Director

Why we do it

WHY RESPECT?

As a citizen of Baton Rouge, I commit myself to help create a better community by upholding these

standards of respect -

To treat others the way I want to be treated,

To practice kindness,

To return disrespect with respect,

To be slow to anger and quick to forgive,

To honor others before myself,

To give to someone who cannot give in return,

To serve without thought ofrecognition or personal gain,

To be my best and give my best every day,

To see beyond the past and look toward the future for the good of our community,

So that together we can “secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity”...
