2016 ANNUAL REPORT
REFLECTING THE FUTUREREFLECTING THE FUTURE
Dear Friend,
For seven straight years, we have seen job outcomes increase for the men and women who have come through Chrysalis’ doors. The more than 2,300 jobs secured by our clients in 2016 is incredible, yet it is only one of several important results.
In 2016, the number of clients moving from a transitional job in our street maintenance social enterprise to outside employment increased by 30 percent. Even those outcomes are eclipsed by the fact that 71 percent of the clients we reached reported that they were still employed 6 months after landing a job.
An annual report presents us with an opportunity to reflect on a full calendar year of our successes, our growth, and our opportunities for the future. In the pages that follow, you will indeed find illuminating statistics and information on programmatic outcomes of which we are exceedingly proud. But this year also marked a moment between what has been and what we expect to be – two significant stages in the Chrysalis story.
At the start of 2016, we stood at the conclusion of

a five-year strategic plan, reflecting on the crucial groundwork and new programs that had been launched as a result of planning put into action. Our core curriculum of job prep classes had been refined and updated to stay current with the job market trends. We increased our capacity by renovating and improving the footprints of our Downtown and Pacoima centers. We worked tirelessly to grow opportunities through our social enterprise businesses. We also surrounded ourselves with key outside resources, and our network of partners and supporting programs has grown to more than 120 organizations.
We reflected on all of these past achievements, and then asked ourselves to look forward to 2022. What will be reflecting back at us when we look in the mirror at the end of another five-year strategic plan?
Chrysalis will never rest on its laurels or stop challenging itself to do better. That’s because we believe that everyone should have the opportunity to succeed, regardless of their past or present barriers. Furthermore, we believe that our central
focus on self-sufficiency through employment addresses an unmet need among an underserved population. When we look in the mirror five years from now, we intend to see double the number of job outcomes for our clients!
The Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority (LAHSA) confirmed that the number of individuals experiencing homelessness in the County continued to grow in 2016, reaching almost 47,000. At the same time, data was presented at the 2016 Economic Roundtable conference showing that a job is a needed intervention for 70 percent of Los Angeles County’s homeless population, adding another voice to our rally for a focus on jobs and other supportive services.
As we reflect on the conclusion of 2016, we are spurred to action and ready to take on another ambitious journey. This is more than a challenge to be met – it is a promise to our future clients, because theirs are the faces reflecting back at us in the mirror.

CLIENT DEMOGRAPHICS
We want our clients to love the person they see in the mirror – to believe in themselves and a second chance. Each person who chooses to participate in Chrysalis’ program has their own set of barriers to employment, but they also have talents that can be utilized or developed to find their own success. Their backgrounds may vary, the challenges they face may be different, but one thing is the same – they want to change their life through a job. In order to help clients meet this goal, we take a personalized approach to each and every one.

A CLOSER LOOK:INCREASING NUMBER OF WOMEN SERVED
One in four individuals experiencing homelessness in the U.S. is a woman. In LAHSA’s 2016 homeless count, the number of individuals identifying as female increased by 55 percent since 2013. And at Chrysalis, the number of female clients has increased by 10 percent over the last three years.
Programs combining rapid re-housing with employment supports, such as the Housing & Jobs Collaborative and Breaking Barriers, are additional resources for clients facing homelessness. These are vital resources as 74 percent of individuals are unstably housed when they arrive at Chrysalis.

“What do you want to do?” It’s one of the first questions our Employment Specialists ask our clients. Some folks have specific ideas, but many have not had the luxury or have never been asked to reflect on their personal goals. Our core employment program and services are designed to support the groundwork (and even soul-searching) clients do with support from our Employment Specialists.
The first day for a Chrysalis client begins with orientation and a meeting with their Employment Specialist – who will be their personal advocate and case manager. Afterward, our Job Prep classes become the
building blocks to begin the job search. In 2016, our volunteers and staff members contributed to 20,967 hours of core curriculum instruction, helped clients prepare 2,492 resumes, and conducted 2,280 practice interviews.
With more than 2,300 clients landing jobs during 2016, this marked the seventh straight year of growth in job outcomes. Even more exciting is the 71 percent of clients reached who were still working six months after landing their initial job.

Chrysalis first offered transitional job opportunities in 1991, and we have since become a recognized leader in the field. In 2016, 724 men and women worked a transitional job with Chrysalis.
Transitional jobs provide a chance to develop marketable experience and occupational skills within a closely supervised, supportive working environment, increasing the likelihood of success in the job market. We are thrilled to have increased both participation and transitions to outside employment from our three social enterprises in 2016.
The most recognizable transitional jobs are with our street maintenance teams – embedded within 16 Business Improvement Districts throughout Los Angeles
County. Our clean teams provide local communities with street sweeping, pressure washing, and graffiti removal services. We also have a staffing division, which works directly with businesses in search of temp or temp-to-perm employees.
In November 2016, we launched a game-changing partnership with the City of Los Angeles Office of the Mayor, sponsored by Caltrans. The New Roads to Second Chances Los Angeles Reentry Employment Program provides individuals on probation or parole the opportunity to work transitional jobs with Chrysalis on highway maintenance crews. At full implementation, we will be deploying six crews of up to 45 workers, five days a week.
