2016 CATALOGUE
1
G r e e t i n G s f ro m s h i r e
2016 is a year of change for Shire. As part of our integration with Bloomsbury, there have been changes regarding how you order titles since moving our distribution to Macmillan Distribution Ltd in the UK and Macmillan in the US. Please look at pages 42 –43 in this catalogue for information on where to place trade orders from now on. If you have any queries regarding these changes then please contact [email protected].
One thing that has not changed though is the quality of our books. We have a range of exciting titles coming out this year that we are incredibly excited about, including the stunningly illustrated Cathedrals of Britain and the fascinating SOE: Churchill’s Secret Agents which tells the story of the organisation
dedicated to exporting resistance, subversion and sabotage to occupied Europe during World War II.
With other titles covering everything from The Iron Industry to London Transport, we are sure there is something for everyone in this catalogue including our extensive backlist of titles which is being continually supplemented by Print-on-Demand titles.
We look forward to hearing from you soon,
Richard Sullivan

London Transport was created in 1933 to coordinate the shambolic, overlapping transport systems of the capital, and for decades has striven to meet the challenges of organising London travel. Now operating as Transport for London (TfL), it continues this demanding work. In this fully illustrated volume, Michael H. C. Baker presents the complete story of the organisation from its origins, through the upheavals of the Second World War, to TfL’s biggest modern project – Crossrail. Covering modes of transport including trams, trolleybuses, the iconic RT and Routemaster buses and the trains of the Underground, this is an essential guide to London’s world-famous transport operator.
For centuries, cathedrals in Britain have inspired and captivated those that have stood before them. Some are grand medieval structures, while others appear simple and unpretentious – yet all were designed to reflect something of the glory of God. In this lavishly illustrated guide David Pepin explores the developments in architectural style through the ages and examines the unique characteristics that each cathedral possesses, from the powerful Norman Romanesque towers of Durham, to the daring Gothic finery at Gloucester. Covering not just Anglican but Roman Catholic and Scottish cathedrals too, Pepin addresses the ongoing story of daily worship, conservation, pilgrimage and the tourism industry within cathedrals today.

The Victorian age was one of the most exciting and complex periods of history, an era of rapid change and great contrasts, in which dress reflected the times with extraordinary vibrancy. Female style was expressed in a succession of striking fashions, ever-shifting trends in the form, colour, material and ornamentation of garments, novel accessories and diverse hairstyles. Male dress was more uniform and sober, evolving subtly, whereas children’s wear underwent significant developments. While celebrating the excesses of high fashion hot from Paris, Jayne Shrimpton also considers the dress of ordinary working people and the clothing worn for special occasions and sporting activities. Featuring many previously-unpublished images and drawing on private journals, this new history of Victorian dress presents fresh material and offers original insights into a fascinating subject.
The midwife: medical professional, friend in a woman’s hour of greatest need, potent social and cultural symbol. Though the role of midwife has existed since time immemorial, it is only since the Victorian era that it has been a recognised and regulated profession. This book, from social history expert Susan Cohen, looks at midwifery in Britain from ancient times up to the present, paying particular attention to its incredible medical and social advances of the last 150 years. It is a fully illustrated tour that takes in fictional midwives such as Dickens’ Sarey Gamp, the founding of the Royal College of Midwives in 1881, the Second World War, the forming of the NHS and the Central Midwives Board, and looks at the increasing medicalisation of childbirth and the countervailing trend for giving birth at home.
With over two-thirds of the globe covered by water, the ability to navigate safely and quickly across the oceans has been crucial throughout human history. As seafarers attempted longer and longer voyages from the sixteenth century onwards in search of profit and new lands, the tools of navigation became ever more sophisticated. The development of instruments over the last five hundred years has seen some revolutionary changes, spurred on by the threat of disaster at sea and the possibility of huge rewards from successful voyages. As this book shows, the solution of the infamous longitude problem, the extraordinary impact of satellite positioning and other advances in navigation have successfully brought together seafarers, artisans and scientists in search of better ways of getting from A to B and back again.
The SOE (Special Operations Executive) was one of the most innovative British creations of the Second World War. The mission of the organisation was to export resistance, subversion and sabotage to occupied Europe and beyond, disrupting the German war effort and building a Secret Army which could one day help Europe throw off the Nazi yoke. Potential agents were put through intensive paramilitary and parachute training and taught how to live clandestinely behind enemy lines, to operate radios and write in secret codes. They lived in constant fear of arrest, and of treachery and betrayal by collaborators. This fully illustrated book looks at the men and women who made up the SOE, the rigorous training to which they were subjected, and their lives during and after the war.

From the Middle Ages to the present day, parsonages – vicarages and rectories, and later manses, presbyteries and chapel houses – have been amongst the most significant dwellings in every kind of British community. Their roles have been wide and varied. Architecturally important and ranging from medieval vernacular buildings to the bespoke house designs of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries and the more modest homes of today’s clergy, parsonages are important not only as buildings but for the part they, and their occupants, played in the life of local communities and in their links with the wider world. This study draws on the evidence architecture, official documents, private records, literary accounts and contemporary and modern images to build a picture of parsonages and their occupants.
The iron industry was the catalyst for the Industrial Revolution, producing a vital source of iron without which none of the great engineering achievements of the Victorian age would have been possible. This book charts the growth of iron making from the Middle Ages, covering the importation of blast-furnace methods in the fifteenth century, the adoption of coke as a fuel in the eighteenth century, and the invention of mass-produced steel in the nineteenth century. The developing techniques of iron making, all explained in a non-technical style, make a story in their own right, but combined with the experiences of the masters and workmen who laboured at the furnaces and forges, this volume offers a truly comprehensive account of one of the most important industries of recent centuries.
Handel called Britain ‘The Ringing Isle’ because he heard bells ringing everywhere he went. Behind the quintessentially English sound of bells ringing lies a unique way of hanging bells and a special way of ringing them that evolved in the late sixteenth century. Ringing has since developed and spread, with some 6,000 towers worldwide with bells hung in the English style, and over 40,000 active ringers. The book is an introduction to the world of bells and bell-ringing, explaining how bells are made and how a ringing installation works. Exploring the nature of change ringing, which has mathematical as well as musical aspects, it provides insights into the ringing community – its origins and culture as well as its relationships with the Church and the community.
From workaday marigolds to hand-wear custom crafted for the Queen, gloves perform many functions – insulation from the cold, protection from injury, and even ceremonial roles. In Britain, their use as formal and fashion items took off during Elizabeth I’s reign, and played a surprisingly significant cultural role well into the nineteenth century. They were often given as precious gifts, used in coronation ceremonies, sent to indicate assent, or even to offer a formal challenge. This beautifully illustrated history, published in association with the Worshipful Company of Glovers of London, delves into the glove’s place in history, offers detailed descriptions of their production in the artisanal workshop and on the factory floor, and also tells the fascinating story of the closely guarded privileges of the glove-makers’ guilds.
