Prof. Judith Evans works on food refrigeration operations throughout the food cold

chain from harvest/slaughter to the consumer. She previously worked at FRPERC (Food

Refrigeration and Process Engineering Research Centre) at the University of Bristol where

she was a Senior Research Fellow. Before then Judith worked for the Meat Research

Institute and AFRC Institute of Food Research.

During her career Judith has worked on a number of topics including frozen storage

of meat, consumer handling of food and studies to improve the performance of

domestic and commercial refrigerators, energy labelling, instrumentation performance,

decontamination of food, cook-chill systems, novel refrigeration systems, optimising

refrigeration systems and improving performance and temperature control in chilled and

frozen storage rooms.

Judith’s current work revolves around reducing energy use and emissions from the food

cold chain, the use of novel refrigeration systems (in particular air cycle) and optimising

food refrigeration processes.

Rob graduated from Leeds University in 1994 with a first class degree in Chemical

Engineering. He continued his studies and completed a PhD in 1998 which looked into the

development of refrigerant blends for energy saving. He started work with Star Refrigeration

the same year as a Technical Sales Engineer, before progressing to Southern Areas Sales

Director in 2000 and National Sales Director in 2004. He joined Star’s executive board as Sales

Director in 2010 and became Group Sales & Marketing Director in 2011.

His team is responsible for contract and product sales to a wide range of industrial markets

including Temperature Controlled Distribution, Food Processing, Brewing, Petrochemical,

Pharmaceutical, Ice and Leisure, HVAC and IT. He also has an involvement in wider

business activities including in-line cooling/freezing, mechanical and electrical contracting,

consultancy and training.

Rob has written technical papers and presented at national and international conferences

including IIR, ATMOsphere, IoR, IARW and GCCA. He is a Fellow of the Institute of

Refrigeration and member of their membership committee. Rob also represents Star on the

board of the British Refrigeration Association and on the steering committee of eurammon,

an organisation which promotes the use of natural refrigerants around the world.
