2016 INDEPENDENT SCHOOLS GUIDE
S P E C I A L S U P P L E M E N T
I N S I D E : College prep starts earlyWhy arts education mattersComplete listing of independent schools
The following pages list independent primary and secondary schools in the state of Maryland, including both secular and religious schools that are not part of the state’s public school systems. The list is based on information provided by the website of the Maryland State Department of Education and by the schools themselves. In many cases, we talked to school representatives; in some cases, we relied on school websites.
Our list does not include independent schools that offer only nursery school or kindergarten classes. However, those schools are listed by county on the MSDE’s website, www.marylandpublicschools.org; phone 410-767-0100.
Tuition figures are the latest available.
Many schools had not set fees for 2016-17 when we gathered this information and schools often charge extra fees that are not considered part of tuition. We recommend that readers contact schools directly to check on tuition and to ask about additional fees, enrollment policies and waiting lists.
Readers also should be aware that just because the state licenses a school to teach certain grades, that does not mean all of those grades are offered.
It is important to us (and to our readers) to keep the information in this semi-annual guide as accurate as possible.
Please bring any discrepancies to our attention by emailing [email protected].

Creative edgeIndependent schools doubling down on arts-based education
By Brian ShappellSpecial to The Daily Record
Resources for arts programs at public schools in states throughout the country are, on aggregate, shrinking. In some cases, there has been an increasing movement toward more traditional academics, those subjects that show up on standardized testing. In addition, since last decade’s Great Recession, finding states without escalated budget concerns and shortfalls has become increasingly difficult.
Maryland has not been immune to these trends. But as Maryland’s public schools shift resources away
from arts-based programs, many independent schools in the state are working to maintain, if not significantly increase, their commitments to the arts..
And given the reputations of independent schools such as Maryvale Preparatory School, the Calvert School and the Carroll Lutheran School, one would be hard-pressed to characterize them as anything but academically rigorous.
“The arts allow students to explore all aspects of their thinking and creativity in ways that can be incorporated into the classroom,” said Stephanie Coldren, director of communications at Calvert. “It’s important for kids’ growth to have creative outlets. Like reading, writing, math, they need this to become well-rounded people.”
Carroll Administrator Karen Gan-jon pointed to examples of making real-life connections between learning disciplines, such as measuring compo-nents to make a piece of art helping a student work through a future science lab experiment.
Several studies also have shown a positive connection between students’ involvement in the arts and academic achievement.
A 2009 Center for Arts Education report noted that public schools in New York with the highest access to arts-based education and resources had the best graduation rates. Conversely, those with the lowest access had the greatest ratio of dropouts.
A 2010 study of Missouri public schools illustrated that a focus on arts education contributed to higher student test scores and reduced frequency of disciplinary incidents.
Studies in 2002 and 2010 conducted by the Arts Education Partnership found students with more opportunities in music, dance and drama classes showed higher proficiency in math, reading and writing.
“The research on this is solid,” Ganjon said. Beyond test scores, a number of independent school
educators and advocates note the arts help with real-world, non-tested skills.
“The art of public speaking is something we hold pretty important,” Coldren said. “I hear from a lot of our alumni
that remember when they were little ‘speaking to the eagle.’”“They remember being told when on stage during practices
[for school productions] to project their voices loud enough that the eagle in the back of the room can hear it,” Coldren said. “It’s one, quirky thing, but there’s a lasting impact, practical use for everyday life when they are adults.”
Heather Harlan-Warnack, the director of communications and development at Maryvale, suggested the growing importance of technology underscores the importance and connection to the arts. She gave an example of a recent Maryvale graduate who was highly proficient in computer programming and involved in the school’s visual arts programs. The school worked with Towson University to allow her to take more advanced courses in computer logic as part of her high school education. She’s presently excelling as a student at the Rochester Institute of Technology.
“Arts and technology are so married together,” Harlan-Warnack said. “I think cutting back on arts comes from a very narrow focus.”
Patrick McAvoy, a Calvert Hall College High School alumnus who worked in event planning and promotion with Balti-more’s Downtown Partnership before re-cently moving to Florida, did not attend the school specifically seeking better op-tions in the arts. Yet, McAvoy remembers an ever-present encouragement of the arts that he believes benefitted most stu-dents who’ve come through those halls.
“Creativity is important to develop-ing your intellect and there’s only so much creativity involved in algebra and biology,” he said.
In Arts Education Partnership’s State of the States 2015, Maryland public schools fared better than most states from a host of policy standpoints. Still, in an era of increasingly strained budgets and preoccupation with standardized test scores, supporters of arts programs in schools remain uncomfortable with the direction, if not rhetoric, on the part of lawmakers and some high-level
administrators.“My colleagues working
in public schools are always worried about more cuts coming to staff relat-ed to arts education,” Ganjon said. “I can’t imagine our school without a commit-ment to the arts. … The bottom line is that part of quality educa-tion, as we define it, includes the arts.”
“The arts allow students to explore all aspects of their thinking and creativity in ways that can be incorporated into the classroom. It’s important for kids’ growth to have creative outlets. Like reading, writing, math, they need this to become well-rounded people.

By offering curriculum centered on leadership, community service and foreign language proficiency, some Maryland independent school leaders say they prepare their students for college as early as pre-kindergarten.
The importance of leadership is woven into the curriculum of Gerstell Academy in Finksburg, where students enrolled in pre-kindergarten through 12th grade learn about historic figures, current events and the United States as a super power, said Mary Louque, the school’s vice president and director of admissions.
On top of its leadership focus, students complete a rigorous academic course load, which includes daily physical education and foreign language classes, she said. The school’s goal is for every student to graduate with a functional fluency in Spanish, she said.
“We’re doing what we say we’re doing,” Louque said. “We really believe it’s important to have our graduates ready to do two things: make a positive contribution or difference in the world, and we wanted Gerstell graduates to have a competitive edge.”
At Calvert School, students in kindergarten through eighth grade also learn foreign languages. Each student takes Spanish when they are 6 years old and takes French when they are 7 years old. After that, students must choose a language to take through eighth grade, said Stephanie Coldren, the school’s director of communications, who added that foreign language proficiency will help them in college and in life.
The Baltimore school focuses its students on character and leadership, too, offering the older, middle school students to mentor the younger students through a variety of programs, providing all ages the opportunity to learn from one another and a skill set
many of their peers lack entering high school, she said.
With fundamentals at its core, Calvert students learn composition as early as second grade, Coldren said. She pointed out that Baltimore native John Waters, the famous film director and Calvert Class of 1958 alum, said in an interview with the school’s magazine, “I wish I quit school in sixth grade because the only thing I ever learned I learned at Calvert School. I learned how to write, I learned how to give shows and I learned public speaking ….”
“What we’ve always been told by our alums is that because we have this strong curriculum that focuses on the fundamentals and teaches them how to be a student, they feel very well prepared for college and have the skills necessary to succeed in college,” Coldren said.
At St. James Academy in Monkton, kindergarten through eighth grade pupils at the international baccalau-reate school are learning their lessons through a global lens, said Lisa Davis, head of the middle school.
Students collaborate on projects aimed at tackling big problems such as water and food shortages across the world. That focus seeps into a variety of subjects, including in art class where students have made cards and sold them to benefit microloans for third-world countries, she said.
“The whole idea of 21st century workplace revolves around communication and collaboration — if they can figure out how to be collaborative, how to problem solve and learn how to fail and how to grow from that, they’ll be prepared for college and beyond,” Davis said.
Gerstell Academy and the Institute of Notre Dame boast a 100 percent graduation rate. The Institute of Notre Dame’s Class of 2015 earned more than $13.5 million in merit scholarships—averaging more than $151,685 per student, said Jeannie Kihn, director of admissions, public relations and marketing for the school.
The all-female, Catholic high school prides itself on giving its 312 students a full college preparatory experience
with a foundation in service and academic excellence in the heart of downtown Baltimore, Kihn said.
Easy access to all the city has to offer enables girls a variety of opportunities, from attending classes at Johns Hopkins University, taking quick field trips to the National Aquarium and volunteering at Mercy Medical Center, she said.
“We’re big on giving back to the community and growing the girl and helping the world,” she said.
Girls enrolled in the Project Lead the Way program at the historic school take classes in engineering, biomedical engineering and computer science — fields dominated by male professionals — offering them a chance to explore those subjects and giving them the upper hand in the college enrollment process, she said.
“It’s a great school and the girls who come out of here are such incredible young women who learn how to advocate for themselves the minute they walk in the door,” Kihn said.

Even the best out-of-state school isn’t necessarily a good fit for every student. But for those who seek a specific challenge or courses not offered in their local public schools, a boarding school education can be a satisfying experience.
“It’s the best thing you can do for your child because you learn responsibility and accountability,” said Keith McMahon, a Virginia resident who attended boarding schools in Connecticut and New York while growing up. “If you’re late for breakfast or forget to wear a tie, there are consequences. That makes you learn to grow up quick, makes you develop a work ethic.”
McMahon, now working in the private sector, agrees with many educators and administrators in believing that the most obvious benefit of a boarding school education is developing independence.
“At an age and time when students are having their most important development, that you can solve your own issues without your parents can really be meaningful,” said Christopher Burner, the head master and former teacher at Western Reserve Academy in Hudson, Ohio “It’s lasting learning that helps at college and well beyond.”
A student looking for specialized programs such as pre-professional arts
programs, courses in highlyspecialized or advanced technological
tracks or even top-level, non-traditional sports programs such as water polo, fencing and squash might not find them in their local public or private schools. Myra McGovern, the vice president of media at the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS), believes that boarding schools give students a greater number of options for their education.
“If you live in a community where there might be one school in the region -- what it offers is what you get,” McGovern said. “For those families, the options available at boarding schools are particularly appealing.”
Giving student educational options and access to differing viewpoints and perspectives help boarding schools fight the stereotypical myth that they are sheltered or “bubble-wrapped.” McGovern argues that many of the 1,800 schools NAIS represents strongly encourage an honest dialogue about real-world problems and ideas over a you-can’t-talk-about-this culture that she said is growing in public schools.
“Public schools are not allowed to talk about religion, politics, or really anything controversial,” McMahon said. “That doesn’t sound very intellectually intriguing to me. Private schools don’t have to be held to that standard.” In essence, there isn’t always a comfort zone in play.”
Breaking out of her own comfort
zone was a big draw for Sara Brauner, who attended Western Reserve Academy. Admittedly shy as a child, Braumer relished the chance to attend an independent school far from her parents, embracing the opportunity to interact with people of diverse backgrounds, interests and opinions. She found all that, as well as a close sense of community among fellow students and faculty. A big part of that came from her connections with instructors who also took on the role of mentor.
“Teachers take such an interest in mentoring the students,” said Brauner, now living in Texas. “They have
lunch and dinner with students. I remember one would sit in common areas during the weekend, always happy to engage.”
One of the faculty members she remembered fondly was Burner, attended the academy more than a decade before. He enjoyed the experience at Western Reserve Academy so much that he pursued independent education as a career. He found his way back to the school as a teacher, wrestling coach and, ultimately, the head master.
“What brought me back was the stu-dents,” said Burner, whose son attends a boarding school in Connecticut. “That interaction, that connection between teachers and students in that setting is just incredible.”
Burner said an independent school
education can be rewarding for the student, if chosen for the right reasons. Often parents who force their children to attend an out-of-state independent school are driven by the fear that this type of schooling is the only way to get into the “right” college. Or worse, using the school as a form of punishment for academic underperformance or unacceptable behavior.
“It has to come from within a student,” Burner said. “They have to be eager for these opportunities and challenges to be successful.”

BY THE NUMBERS: The diverse and dynamic pursuits of our students — and their lives of achievement, generosity, and joy once they leave Old Court Road — best represent the value of a Park education. Here are some numbers, too, that help tell the Park story:
THE PARK SCHOOL has grown and
developed on 3 campuses since our founding in 1912 as
a co-educational, non-sectarian, independent school.
Located at 2425 Old Court Road, and referred to as
“a city school in the country,” our roots remain firmly planted
in Baltimore (the original campus was adjacent to Druid Hill Park) with a
deep sense of engagement with, and responsibility to, the
community in which we live.
Our 100-acre campus — located just 18 minutes from
the Inner Harbor — is a thriving learning laboratory that
includes woodlands, tributary, pond, Appalachian Challenge
outdoor education course, trails, gardens, and more. We train
and compete on our 9 athletic playing fields, including a
state-of-the-art AstroTurf surface, and an NCAA regulation
baseball field.
Our academic community itself is made up of more than
785 students, Pre-K through Grade 12, and a faculty of
100 full-time and 13 part-time inspired and inspiring
teaching professionals.
72 Park faculty members hold master’s or other advanced
degrees, with 6 Ph.D.’s, and 3 J.D.’s among them.
There is only 1 Park School of Baltimore.
