2016 SENIOR PORTFOLIO &PRESENTATION INFORMATION PACKET
How am I ready to be a productive member of society;enter the workforce and/or further my education.
Over the course of their high school career, Lima Senior High School students willcompile a portfolio that enables the faculty to review each students readiness to enterthe world after high school and allows the student to reflect on his or her education.
The following outline will provide senior students, teachers and parents with theflexibility to both meet school standards and make sure the portfolio represents theindividual students readiness for learning after high school. Students must meetevery requirement on the check sheet to pass the portfolio. The portfolio is agraduation requirement.
The senior portfolio is a culmination of four years work. Each student will take his orher own approach to the task. We look forward to the presentations of these portfoliosin April 2016 where they will present in front of a panel of 2 to 3 judges.
Senior Presentation
Presentation: The presentation is the final part of the Senior Project. It is thestudents chance to formally share what he or she has learned andaccomplished through the four years of high school and how are theyprepared to enter society as a young adult.
Each student portfolio and presentation will be graded with a rubric which scorescontent, reflection, and presentation. Students are encouraged to take whateverapproach they wish for the presentations, but please be advised that students will beexpected to discuss their work. Emphasis will be placed on student accomplishments,work and presentation skills.
The final phase, the Senior Presentation, requires seniors to formally speak to a boardof judges from the community. The formal speech is followed by an informal questionand answer session guided by the judges. The senior presentation is not only focusedon how the student can answer the following question:How am I ready to be aproductive member of society; enter the workforce and/or further myeducation.but also show competent speaking skills and an ability to think on theirfeet.

Tips for success:
Dress for success. Wear professional attire. Make sure your audio-visual aids are of the best quality you are capable of
producing. Check to make sure your visual aids, particularly the laptops,powerpoints are functioning properly BEFORE the presentation date.
Outline your speech, in topic form, on notecards.
Practice many times in advance of your presentationin front of a mirror or onan audio or video recorderto help polish your speech and to make sure youspeak fluidly and audibly. This is not the time to improvise!
The presentation will need to be an ELECTRONIC PRESENTATION (example
POWERPOINT. No tryfolds. You will be allotted 10 minutes for the actuallypresentation and allow 5 minutes for questions from the judges.)
PortfolioThe day the judges listen to a seniors presentation, they view the seniors portfolio; acollection of process pieces that will showcase their academic achievements throughouttheir four years. While the portfolio is used by the judges to help guide theirquestioning, it is also often a valued document that students take as they exit highschool. Senior Project portfolios contain models that can be used in the job and collegeapplication process, i.e., resumes, career information, and self-evaluations.
A general list of what is required is included in this handout and must be followedspecifically. If a student does not have a document, please check on Schoology or withMrs. Van Gorder, Mrs. Schick, or Mrs. Gerten.

The Lima Senior High School
Senior Portfolio Requirements
The LSH portfolio is made up of five different parts or folios: Personal Growth and
Development, Career Readiness, Citizenship, Spartan Insider and College Access. Eachrequirement is described below. Faculty encourages students to make the portfolioreflect individual strengths.
Essential questions are an important part of teaching and learning at LSH, and this partof the portfolio asks students to determine how prepared they are for a life of learningafter high school. This section includes items that show studentsunderstanding of theimportance of higher learning, their awareness of resources and opportunities availableto them, and steps they have taken to continue their education beyond high school.
The following will need to be LABELED and IN ORDER.

Arrange the ideas in groups according to topic (like the topics listed above). Put all theinformation about sports together, all the information about your relatives together,
and so on. You can do this by making lists or outlines in your word processor, or youcan use a graphic organizing program such as Inspirationto help you.

COVER LETTER TIPS
"A cover letter is your chance to explain to an employer why he or she shouldconsider you for the job,"
"The best cover letters are specific and give examples that directly relate to the jobyou are trying to get."
"Your cover letter is a targeted sales tool which should be tailored to the specificposition you are seeking,"
Make sure that your letter has no mistakes. "Proofread! Proofread! Proofread!"
THREE BASIC PARTS:
Paragraph 1, in which you state: who you are; how you heard of the position
or the company; why you are writing. "Your goal in this paragraph," says Ann
Harrell, "is to convince the reader why you are the only candidate to interview."
Paragraph 2, in which you discuss: why you are interested in the position
and/or company; how your qualifications fit the specific skills needed for the job;
some specific examples of how your past experience has prepared you to do the
job for which you are applying; any other relevant skills, qualities, achievements,
and experiences that make you the best candidate for the job. "The second
paragraph is your chance to shine," says Ms. Harrell. "Discuss your experiencesand skills that match the criteria for the position. If you met your contact
through networking, refer to your meeting notes. Use the company information
you found if this is a cover letter for a direct mailing."
Paragraph 3, in which you: repeat that you are hoping to be considered for the
job; give specific information about your plans to follow up; thank the employer
for his or her consideration. "And then be sure to follow through," says Ms.
Harrell. When closing, "Sincerely" or "Sincerely Yours" with your typed name and
signature will be appropriate.

COVER LETTER DO s and DON'T s:

In the first paragraph, name the title of the job for which you are applying andbe specific about how you heard about the position or company.
Try to find out the name and title of the person who will be able to hire you anduse the name, instead of writing "Dear Sir" or "Dear Madam."
Write the letter based on exactly what the ad or job listing says the employer islooking for; try to give an example from your experience for every qualificationlisted in the ad.
Type the letter and use paper and font that is the same or looks similar to yourresume.
Reread the letter carefully and check for spelling, grammar, and punctuationerrors. It's a good idea to have someone else proofread the letter as well.
Keep the letter brief--under 1 page. Keep the paragraphs to 2-4 sentences each. Say that you are enclosing a resume. Include your phone number in the last paragraph. Make sure the envelope is clearly and properly addressed.
DON'T s...
Send a resume without a cover letter. Discuss salary unless the ad or job listing requires it. Repeat information that appears on the resume, except in the briefest,
introductory manner. Generalize about personal qualities or past job titles. Instead, give specificsabout your skills and experience.
Talk about what the job will do for you. Give unnecessary personal information. Include anything that you will not be able to explain in an interview. Send Xerox copies. Say you will follow up without having a specific plan to do so. Staple or paper clip items. Don't forget to sign your name.

HOW TO WRITE A RESUME
Getting Started on Your ResumeIt's easy to get started creating your resume, even if it's the first time you've done it. All youneed is a word processing program like Microsoft Word and a printer. Your school or library willhave everything you need, if you don't have it at home.
Resume TemplatesA quick way to get a head start on writing a resume is to use a Microsoft Word ResumeTemplate. All you'll need to do is customize the template with your information. You can alsouse my resume template for high school students.
Resume Builders for Teen ResumesAnother option it to use a resume builder. MyFirstPaycheck.comhas a resume builderspecifically for teen job seekers. You can enter all your information into the resume builderonline. You can't print your resume, but you can copy/paste it into Microsoft Word to print.
Formatting Your ResumeAfter you have added all your personal information to your resume, take the time to format it.Your resume should use a plain font, have lots of white space, and be simple and easy to read.Your resume has less than 20 seconds to make a good impression on an employer, so it needsto be eye-catching and easy to read.
Proofread Your ResumeIt's very hard to catch your own typos, so after you have proofread your resume, ask someoneelse to review your resume for you. They don't need to be an expert - a family member orfriend can proof your resume for you.
Keep Your Resume Up-to-DateNow that you have a resume it's going to be much easier to apply for jobs. Keep your resumecurrent, so it's ready when you need it. Add new activities - school, volunteer, etc. and newwork experiences as they happen, so you won't have to figure out what you did when you needan updated resume later on.
Resumes for College ApplicationsCollege admissions professionals recommend filling in the boxes on your college applicationsrather than attaching a resume, if there's a choice. That way, the admissions staff can reviewyour application in its entirety, rather than having to look at a separate document. If you doneed to submit a resume with your college application, put the most relevant and mostimportant information first.
References On Your ResumeThere is no need to include references on your resume. Create a separate list of references togive to prospective employers. Keep in mind, too, that you can use personal references if youdon't have work experience. Teachers, coaches, neighbors, and family friends who can attest toyour character all make good references.

GUIDELINES FOR JOB SHADOWING(must be linked to Career Researchsimilar type of career)
PURPOSE: To give students an opportunity to explore and gain some experience in the
area of their career interest. A written account of the experience will become part of the
students readiness which will go into their senior portfolios. Students are not to
shadow family members and/or Lima Senior employees. PICTURES ARE
RECOMMENDED FOR PORTFOLIO AND FINAL PRESENTATIONS
As a student of the Lima City Schools, please be reminded that you represent yourschool community. A professional attitude, respect for others and proper dress shouldbe displayed during this shadowing experience.The following will be required of all students:
1. Consider your job shadowing day a true work day: Check with your employer to
see what time you are expected to report to work. It may be earlier or later than
our actual school day. Students may request to leave early in order to return for
practices, etc. Staying until the workday is finished is also allowed and
encouraged.
2.Appropriate Dress: Be sure to ask your employer what would be the appropriate
dress to wear on the day you shadow. Unless it is a shop job with specific safety
requirements, campus wear or better is highly suggested.
3. Illness: If for some reason you are ill, please be sure to call the person to whomyou are responsible and let him/her know that you are ill. Also, call the school
(419-996-3000) to let us know you are ill since your employer may be calling the
school to verify your absence.
4. Salary, Wages, Gratuities: This is an exploration day during which you are
observing a company and learning about a field in which you are interested. The
company or persons involved are not to pay you for any services.
5. Personal Thank You Notes: This is a polite gesture to express your gratitude for
the time your employer has spent with you. The person you shadow is busy
and it is quite a favor for him or her to spend the day with you.
6. Evaluation Forms: You are required to complete an evaluation form on your
experience. Your employer or supervisor will also have a different evaluation
form to fill out and sign.

COMMUNITY SERVICE
What is the community service requirement?Students must serve a minimum of 10 hours of community service during the time periodof JUNE 2015 APRIL 2016 as a requirement for graduation per the SeniorPortfolio/Presentation.
What is the purpose of the community service requirement?
The purpose of the community service program is to provide all Lima Senior High Schoolstudents the opportunity to have a positive impact on our local community while learning thatservice to others is an on-going part of life.
What qualifies as community service?
Community service hours must be completed at a non-profit organization. A student may volunteer for a single organization or at a variety of organizations. Students are encouraged to complete their hours in areas related to their personal
interests. Paid experiences do not qualify. Working without pay at your job or for a family business does not qualify. Court ordered community service will not be accepted Students cannot earn hours for donating items or money...only their time. Community service hours cannot be earned during the school day.
How do I prove my community service hours?
Students must complete a Community Service Verification Form for each organization he/shevolunteers at. A supervisor's signature is required on each form. The parent of a student maynot sign as the supervisor.
