Welcome to the 2016 Student Water Conference!

It is a great time to research water!

Welcome to Stillwater and the 5th Annual Student Water Conference. It is

amazing to realize that this is our fifth year for this event. Every year our

student presenters, moderators, and judges make it even better than the

last; your participation in this meeting is very much appreciated.

Students, I hope you will use this opportunity to learn about the water re-

search of your future colleagues from across the United States. I challenge

you to learn at least three new things related to water in the next two days

and especially outside your discipline! You will be called to work on multi-

disciplinary teams to solve future water issues.

Tweet about what you are learning or hearing using #okstatewaterweek. I

am excited to have this opportunity to show off Oklahoma State University

and our tremendous graduate programs in water.

Financial support for the conference, travel assistantships, and awards are

provided through the Orville L. and Helen L. Buchanan Family Trust as part

of the Buchanan Chair in Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering, the

Thomas E. Berry Professorship in Integrated Water Research and Manage-

ment, and a USDA-NIFA National Integrated Water Quality Project. I appre-

ciate their generous support, as none of this would be possible without

their funding!

Thank you for your efforts to participate in the conference. If you are vis-

iting, welcome to Stillwater, home of the OSU Cowboys!

About the Speakers!

Welcome Dr. Kenneth Sewell is the current vice president for research at Oklahoma State Uni-

versity, a position he began in June of 2015. In this role, he oversees the policies, offices, and service units that support and promote research, scholarship, and creative artistry at OSU. As a member of OSU’s senior leadership team, Dr. Sewell actively engages with the president, provost, other vice presidents, and deans to ensure that research is support-ed, promoted, and integrated throughout the entire mission of the institution. Dr. Sewell received his B.S. from Kansas State University. He then received his M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Kansas. Following a clinical internship with the Department of Veterans Affairs, Dr. Sewell joined UNT’s Department of Psychology faculty in 1991. In 2008, he entered central research leadership full time, first as associate vice president for re-search and then as interim vice president for research at UNT before joining the Universi-ty of New Orleans.

Dr. Garey Fox came to OSU and joined the Biosystems & Ag Engineering department in

July 2006 in the area of Environment and Natural Resources Engineering. He was select-ed as the Orville L. and Helen L. Buchanan Endowed Chair in BAE in 2012, and Director and Berry Endowed Professor for the Oklahoma Water Resources Center in 2014. He specializes in stream/aquifer interaction; stream bank erosion and failure; seepage ero-sion; subsurface nutrient transport; vegetative filter strips; and contaminant transport modeling.

Buchanan Keynote Lecturer Dr. Ty Ferré, Professor, Department of Hydrology and Water Resources, University of

Arizona, was selected as the 2016 Darcy Lecturer by the National Ground Water Associa-tion. He received his bachelor's degree in geophysical engineering from the Colorado School of Mines and his Ph.D. in Earth sciences from the University of Waterloo. His re-search is focused on improving the selection of measurements to support hydrologic decision-making, which involves the development of methods that use decision science to formulate hydrologic models and then use those models to select and interpret meas-urements.

Thomas E. Berry Professor-ship in Integrated Water Research & Management

This endowed professorship was created by Malinda Berry Fischer and Dick Fischer, Thom-as E. Berry’s daughter and son-in-law to honor the water con-servation efforts and water in-terests of Mr. Berry. With this support the Water Center helps sustain Oklahoma’s water sup-ply by helping producers, land owners, and the public make informed and beneficial deci-sions about water use and man-agement.

Orville L. and Helen L. Buchanan Family Trust

In 2008, Oklahoma State Uni-versity received a generous gift from the Buchanan Family Trust in Los Gatos, CA, to establish the Orville L. and Helen L. Bu-chanan Chair in Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering. The Trust was established by Orville (Lee) Buchanan, a 1947 OSU agronomy graduate, originally from Rush Springs, Oklahoma.

The survey is being conducted by Oklahoma State University researchers, Emma Kuster and Garey Fox, as a research project.

This survey is being distributed to graduate students at universities across the United States. The purpose of this survey is to determine the current status of climate science education within different disciplines of higher-education institutions.

Your participation in this research survey is completely voluntary, and you may stop at any time. Your answers will remain anonymous. The survey will take roughly 10-15 minutes to complete. There are no known risks associated with this project which are greater than those ordinarily encountered in daily life.
