Each day of HometownDays offers plenty of activ-

ities for children, but Sat-urday’s schedule puts extraemphasis on entertainingVerona’s youngest residentsand visitors.

Beginning at noon, thekids area of Hometown USACommunity Park will act asheadquarters for a series offamily-friendly activities.Kids can get a henna tat-too (available from noon to7 p.m.) to show off whilethey hop from one activityto the next.

First, they can play agame of free laser tag, anew addition to the sched-ule sponsored by UltrazoneLaser Tag (open from noon

to 5 p.m.), or jump in a kid-die pool to sift through pilesof sand and snatch up all thepennies they can in 30 sec-onds during the Kids PennyFind, a returning event. Vol-unteers will be on hand fromnoon to 7 p.m. supervisingpools filled with pennies, and participants can keep allthe pennies they find.

The competition contin-ues during the tractor pedalraces from 12:30-2 p.m.,which will be open to vari-ous age categories on a first-come, first-serve basis. Theraces are returning after amulti-year hiatus, and are

    free to participate in.

    Kids looking to wind

And while adults can lookforward to several sets oflive music during the festi-

val, kids get to take charge

    and lead their own music

activity with help from KimWeiss of the Rhapsody ArtsCenter. Kids ages 4-7 (noonand 2 p.m.) and ages 8-12 (1and 3 p.m.) can participatefor free in drumming activ-ities with a variety of per-cussion instruments, whileWeiss discusses the originsof the instruments and thecorrect way to play them.

Le Jordan, executivedirector of the Verona AreaChamber of Commerce, toldthe Press she and Home-town Days coordinator Jen-nifer Miller decided whileplanning for the festival thisyear that they wanted to put

    a greater emphasis on free

kids programming.“Since I’m new to the

chamber and HometownDays, as my coordinator andI were talking, it was one ofthose things that we thoughtwould be nice for this year,”Jordan said. “I know whenmy children were little, itwas always nice to go tothings and not break the

    bank.”

Jordan added that thekids area is the product ofa true “community effort,”and volunteers from numer-ous local schools, organi-zations and businesses –including Verona Area HighSchool, the Verona YoungProfessionals, the VeronaOptimists Club and Vero-na Lions Club – will be on

    hand to assist families with

the activities. She said thechamber will continue toprioritize adding more kidsactivities at future Home-town Days fests.

“We hope to continue toexpand on this each year,”Jordan said. “Our only lim-itations really, are space, sowe’ll have to watch that aswe continue to grow this

    (kids) area.”

    Music lineup expands its reach

    TOM ALESIA

    Unified Newspaper Group

Opening night will be jumpi n’ at Verona Hom e-town Days with the bandLove Monkeys, Milwau-kee’s seven-piece, pop-rockdynamo performing.

Adding this prominentregional act to the beertent on Thursday, June 2,enhances the fest’s stellarmusical lineup.

“Thursday is one of theslower nights in the tent. Iwas looking to liven it up,”said Le Jordan, executivedirector of Verona Chamberof Commerce. “That’s howwe landed on hiring anotherbig band on Thursday.”

Jordan, working withHometown Days coordina-tor Jen Miller, also bookedWisconsin favorite PatMcCurdy, a veteran sing-er-songwriter with com-ic leanings, to play from2-4:30 p.m. Sunday, June 5in the beer tent.

“A lot of people recom-mended Pat (McCurdy) tous for Sunday,” Jordan said.“That’s another day that’sa little slower. We wantedsomething to entice people. It was my goal to step it upa notch.”

The Love Monkeys willbe performing as part of

    their 25th anniversary tour.

They’ve been a staple atregional events.

“Every time I mentioned(Love Monkeys), peoplewould say, ‘Wow, I lovethem,’” Jordan said.

    M u s i c w i l l e n d a t10:30 p.m. on Thursday

    because it’s a weeknight.

Hometown Days also fea-tures two of the Madisonarea’s most popular groups:country band MadisonCounty (Friday, June 3) and’80s and ’90s “hair band”cover group Cherry Pie.

    The latter act has filled

    the Verona beer tent in

recent years, performingcover tunes of bands fromBon Jovi to Poison.

Hometown Days droppedits cover charge from $6to $5 this year. The movewas made to make it moreconvenient at the beer

    tent entrance and charge a

similar price to other areafestivals, Jordan said.

Still, she said, “Theseacts aren’t cheap. That’swhy the re i s a cove rcharge.”

Jordan is already hopingto add music throughout

    the day on Saturday next

year. “It wasn’t possible todo that this year,” she said.“But we’ll eventually high-light lesser-known bands, maybe three to five bandson Saturday.”

For now, Jordan expectsbig crowds at the coveredtent.

“We’re one of the firstfestivals this summer andthese bands play at a lot ofdifferent places,” she said.“It’s nice we’re one of thekickoffs for the season.”Contact Tom Alesia at tom.

    Fireworks on

Friday againThe move of fireworks to Friday

night looks to be a permanent one,as the attraction will again fall onthat day this year.

The chamber switched the night of

the annual fireworks last year, whenthe festival’s weekend was changedas well. That caused the weekendto fall during the school year, andthen-Verona Area Chamber of Com-merce executive director Karl Curtiswanted to avoid keeping kids up lateon a school night.

The show will begin at 9:30 p.m.,with Saturday as a rain date.

No parents night outParents will have to make other plans to have a night

out during Hometown Days this year.Last year Verona Area Community Theater held a

“Parents Night Out” program on Friday and Saturdaynights for parents to drop their kids off to watch a mov-ie, play games and have snacks while the adults wentto the festival grounds for a few hours for some “grownup” time.

Although VACT would have liked to offer that pro-gram this year, organizer Alyssa Dvorak said, gettingthe building ready in time did not seem possible, espe-cially with the big set pieces from the “Mary Poppins”show filling up the space.

She said the program will tentatively be held forHometown Days next year, because by then VACT willbe moved into its new building within walking distanceof the festival grounds.

    Marketplace returns to Hometown Days

Verona’s Hometown Days will onceagain have a Marketplace for part ofthe weekend.

The event, which allows local ven-

crafts and goods, will be on both Sat-urday and Sunday beginning at 12 p.m.

Verona Area Chamber of Com-merce executive director Le Jordansaid the chamber brought back theevent as a chance for people to showoff their talents.

“We would like to make sure that’s

a part of the event every year,” Jordansaid.

She knows, though, that bringingback an event after an off-year lastyear will take time to build up.

This year, there will be around eightvendors selling goods in HometownUSA Community Park.

    Why is it‘Hometown

    Days?’Verona earned its nickname

a few years before its annual

festival began, but the namedidn’t stick right away.“Hometown U.S.A.” was

the title bestowed on Veronain 1966 by members of theU.S. Army’s 101st AirborneDivision serving in Vietnamafter the Verona Press printeda letter to the editor from oneof its servicemen, DonaldSchmidt.

Because of the freesubscription sent to him(partially paid by the AmericanLegion Auxiliary), the printingof his letter and other nostalgicthings his fellow servicemennoticed in Schmidt’sdescription, the unit declared

Verona “the perfect example ofHometown U.S.A.” They askedto adopt it as their honoraryhometown.

The title was informal untilthe Verona Area Chamber ofCommerce adopted it in 1985and created a logo. That yearthe city designated June 9Hometown U.S.A. Day.

The annual festival started in1972 as a quasquicentennial, and a parade was heldannually. Eventually, thetwo were tied together andHometown U.S.A. Daysbecame shortened by mostpeople as Hometown Days.

Spin the Wheel for prizesA partnership continues

for Hometown Days 2016between the Verona AreaChamber of Commerce andthe Verona Lions Club thatwill have the Spin the Wheelgame as big as ever.

This year a variety of cham-ber businesses have donatedover 80 prizes ranging fromgift certificates to toys to patiofurniture to high-end electron-ic devices, all available to bewon by each player.

The difference betweena standard raffle and thechamber’s Spin the Wheelgame is the player chooseswhich prizes he would liketo vie for.

If you really want a laptopcomputer for your kids. Sim-ply take all your tickets andplace them in the drawingbucket for that item. Say youwant to win a new gas grill, but your husband wouldrather win a new crock pot,

the pair of you can divideyour tickets between the twoitems. Players can spreadtheir tickets between fiveprizes, 10 prizes, or everyprize offered. The choice isup to you.

The Verona Area Chamberof Commerce uses the fundsraised at Hometown Days tofund its operations and activ-ities throughout the year.Among the public events thechamber has funded is a $500

scholarship for a Verona AreaHigh School senior and Vero-na’s Concerts in the Park.

By coming to the Spin theWheel Tent and trying towin one of the many prizesavailable, you will not onlyhave fun but you will alsobe helping the chamber andthe Lions Club to carry ontheir work in the communi-ty. The tent is located justpast the food stand near theCommunity Park entrance.
