The Youth Dance Program at the Hubbard Street Dance CenterCREATIVE. TECHNICAL. COMPREHENSIVE.
Hubbard Street Dance Chicago is among the most original forces in contemporary dance. The Youth Dance Program provides an in-depth dance education that focuses on creativity and the techniques that support contemporary dance.
CREATIVEEarly Childhood and Primary Division classes allow students ages 18 months to 9 years to investigate universal dance concepts through improvisation. Young dancers use their imaginations and engage in creative problem-solving, not only to strengthen their physical development, but to encourage cognitive, social, and emotional growth.
TECHNICALProgressive classes provide dancers ages 7 to 18 with in-depth study of the techniques that support contemporary dance. With a classical ballet foundation, additional courses include modern, jazz, hip-hop, tap, and musical theater, as well as master classes with current and former Hubbard Street dancers.
COMPREHENSIVEThrough age-appropriate goals such as improvisation, building dance vocabulary and technique, students study all aspects of dance, including choreography. Our comprehensive approach helps dancers reach progressive skill levels and inspire communication of their ideas in new ways.

EARLY CHILDHOOD DIVISIONFor ages 18 months to 5 years
Hubbard Street’s Early Childhood Creative Movement curriculum allows young students to explore their developing movement skills while interacting with caregivers and peers, gradually moving into independent classes at age 3. Utilizing our renowned universal dance vocabulary, each session features a different theme, such as change, communication, balance or confidence, to contribute to the development of our littlest students as they start to understand themselves and the world around them.
Creative Movement (CM) Parent/Child, for ages 18 months to 3 yearsCaregivers are an essential part of this class, in which we bounce, swing, twirl and jump, accompanied by vibrant music and stories.
Creative Movement (CM), for ages 3 to 5As children explore new and familiar dance concepts through their evolving gross motor skills, we’ll tell stories with movement while dancing together.
PRIMARY DIVISIONFor ages 5 to 9
Dancers in the primary program explore the “BEST” universal elements of dance (Body, Energy, Space, Time) in more complex ways, solo and with partners, learning simple dance combinations and creating their own basic choreography. Students work together as they choreograph in trios and quartets, gain stronger senses of self as they explore who they are as dancers, and prepare their bodies and minds to transition to specific techniques.
Creative Movement (CM), for ages 5 to 7Students become skilled dancers and choreographers as they increase their range of motion, body articulation and locomotion, learn to put movements together, and solve simple movement problems.
Intro to Ballet, for ages 6 and 7Dancers investigate ballet technique through etiquette, body awareness, and vocabulary in a welcoming environment.
Level A technique classes, for ages 7 to 9Students with little or no dance technique training explore their choice of ballet, jazz, hip-hop, tap, or musical theater.
