WelcomeDevon is increasingly being seen as the most highly regarded and thought of county when it comes to food and drink. Food tourism is growing and expectations are high.

With a 250 strong Devon-based membership including cookery schools, hospitality and catering businesses, speciality retailers, farmers’ markets and producers, Food & Drink Devon is the county’s only dedicated membership organisation supporting quality, provenance and sustainability in the food and drink sector.

The Food Lover’s Destination With a wealth of artisan producers and specialist independent food and drink businesses, last year saw Food & Drink Devon branch out beyond the county’s borders spreading the word about what Devon has to offer. For the first time, our fabulous ‘Love the Flavour’ Food & Drink Devon guide, a ‘go-to’ for food and drink enthusiasts, became available in Exeter Airport’s Aviation Lounge as well as in the First Class lounge at Paddington station. Also, successful partnerships were established such as with Visit Devon, the tourism website for the county where we now have our own dedicated foodie page, driving visitors to our members’ businesses (www.visitdevon.co.uk).

This year, we’re going one step further. We’ve already jointly hosted a press visit with the Guild of Food Writers and

have taken a stand at the International Media Marketplace where we met with 25 leading national journalists. We are also working closely with the North Devon Marketing Bureau and North Devon + to promote the work of Food & Drink Devon in North Devon. There’s a host of activity planned to put Devon firmly on the national and international map as the destination for food and drink lovers.

Sustaining DevonTo become a member of Food & Drink Devon businesses must meet a specific set of qualification criteria in order to be approved to carry the Food & Drink Devon logo. We take care to ensure our members meet high standards of production by personally visiting each business, and our tasting panel samples all members’ produce. Make sure you look out for the ‘Love the Flavour’ logo on products and in delis, farm shops, farmers’ markets and eating establishments across Devon.

Our quality standards cover:• Animal husbandry and welfare• Food hygiene in production,

preparation and service• Made in Devon!• Use of Devon ingredients• Use of environmentally-friendly

materials• Local sourcing of ingredients and

produce• Sustainable fishing methods• Clear labelling and professional

marketing

We also require members to sell, use or supply at least five other members or their products, in the network. This helps develop and sustain businesses in the Devon food sector which is a huge part of our local economy and an important source of employment.

The prestigious Food & Drink Devon Awards are now in their sixth year and continue to go from strength to strength. These valued awards celebrate our most respected and influential artisan Food and Drink producers and establishments. In 2015 judges tasted 182 of the finest products, including meats, sweets and liquid treats and visited dozens of farm shops, pubs, restaurants and delis across Devon to select the pick of the crop for a shortlist of just 61 producers and establishments.

Commenting on last year’s Awards, Barbara King, from the board of Food & Drink Devon, said: “It was fantastic to see so many innovative Devon food and drink producers and hospitality and retail establishments enter and achieve such a high standard. Last year we saw the widest variety yet of entrants from all over the county, with the highest number of award winners to date. We’re expecting even greater things this year.”

The Awards’ ceremony was hosted by food and drink broadcaster and BBC Radio 2’s one and only Nigel Barden.

Commenting on the Awards’ ceremony, Nigel, who specialises in promoting British ingredients and artisan producers, said: “It was a real privilege to present the Food & Drink Devon Awards and be a part of celebrating Devon’s food and drink industry. Devon is highly regarded nationwide for its fabulous food and drink, and this has been clearly evident throughout the Awards’ ceremony. It’s also marvellous that many visitors are attracted to the county on a culinary pilgrimage.” We’re delighted that Nigel will be hosting the Awards again this year.
