Austin Opera Guild Fall 2017 1 2017-2018 SEASON AT A GLANCE by Melysa Rogen Austin Opera’s 2017-2018 Season is filled with thrilling opera, infamous heroines and fabulous performers! Join us for three of the most celebrated operas in the repertory where world- class artists will come together with the talented Austinites that make up Austin Opera’s chorus and orchestra in order to provide an operatic experience completely unique to Austin. The Season begins with a gritty and seductive new take on Bizet’s Carmen, starring the stunning mezzo-soprano Sandra Piques Eddy. Piques Eddy has been praised for her “dark, sensuous mezzo and charming stage presence” (Opera Magazine). This sizzling hot production places the classic story of love, betrayal, and ultimately death, in 1970. Joining Piques Eddy on stage is tenor, Chad Shelton, as Don José, the naïve soldier who succumbs to Carmen’s advances to a tragic end. Baritone Norman Garrett will storm the stage in his Austin Opera debut as the Toreador. In January, the Opera continues their salute to strong women as dueling sopranos Alexandra LoBianco and Jeni Houser retell Richard Strauss’ Ariadne auf Naxos in a whimsical new production conceived by Glimmerglass Festival Director, Francesca Zambello. Join the Austin Opera as they tell the story of a wealthy man who assembles two groups of performers in his home – a group of opera singers preparing for a serious opera and a troupe of comedians scheduled to perform an Italian comedy. As time grows short, the patron demands the opera and the comedy be performed together, leading to an array of unexpected – and ultimately very satisfying – results. Season 31 closes with a classic production of Verdi’s most heart- wrenching tale, La traviata, starring Marina Costa-Jackson. Costa-Jackson, who took first place in 2015 in the Metropolitan Opera’s National Council Auditions, will take the stage in Austin for the first time as Violetta Valéry - a courtesan who falls in love with the handsome Alfredo. As often happens in opera, their happiness cannot last. These carefully curated ensembles featuring company debuts, role debuts, and return engagements have become a hallmark of Richard Buckley’s 13-year tenure at Austin Opera. As the Sarah and Ernest Butler Artistic Director and Principal Conductor he has earned a reputation for identifying some of the field’s finest singers early on in their careers, providing career forging opportunities alongside experienced and established stars.
