1.0WoodlandInspiresVisionWoodlandInspiresPhilosophyofLearningTechnologyplaysavitalroleinthedailylifeofeachstudent,parent,staffmember,andresidentintheWoodlandCommunity.AccesstotechnologyatschoolforWoodlandstudentshasalwaysbeenlimitedtotheavailabilityofafewcomputerlabs,computersinthelibraries,andsomemobilecarts.Athomeourfamilieshaveaspectrumoftechnologyaccessrangingfromhavingasingleparentnon-smartphonetosomestudentshavingmultipledevicesoftheirown.Withthisspectrum,Woodlandneedstoleadaccessforstudentsintheformofaone-to-oneprogram.TheWoodlandBoardofEducationvotedonSeptember22,2015,toformallybegintheWoodlandInspiresinitiativewithinsixththrougheighthgrade.OnSeptember27,2017theWoodlandBoardofEducationapprovedtheexpansionofWoodlandInspiresforour4thand5thgradestudents.WoodlandInspiresisprimarilyaninstructionalinitiativeandsecondarilyatechnologyinitiative.Ourgoalistoenhancethedepth,complexity,andcomprehensivenessofourstudents’academic,social,andpersonalgrowththroughthesupportoftechnology.Specifically,thevisionforWoodlandInspiresincludes:
• Developingeffectiveproblemsolvers• Increasingthevarietyofcommunicationskills• Freedomofstudentchoiceandexplorationofastudent’sownthoughts• Personalizationoflearning,• Blendingtraditionalanddigitalmethods
Atechnologyreviewcommitteeworkingthrough2014and2015developedthesevisionelementsafternumeroussitevisitsandconversations.Again,thefocusisnotprimarilyonlearningtechnologyitself,butratherhowtousetechnologytodeepenthequalityofstudentlearning.A2014technologyresearchmeta-studyfromStanfordUniversityalignstotheWoodlandInspiresVision.Theresearchreviewedmorethan70studiesandfoundmixedtominimalresultsofnumerousonetoonetechnologyprogramsforstudentlearning.Onlywhenone-to-onecomputerprogramsfocusedonthefollowingthreeelements,didtheyfindtheprogramstobeeffective:
• Usingtechnologyforinteractivelearning• Usingtechnologytoexploreorcreate,ratherthanrotepractice• Maintainingaproperblendofteacherandtechnology
AtWoodland,wewillcontinuetouseeffectiveandengaginginstructionalstrategieswithourstudentsbyinfusingtraditionalanddigitalmethodstopreparethemfor21stcenturycollegeandcareers.

2.0GeneralPoliciesandProceduresStudentsareresponsibleforthegeneralcareoftheChromebooktheyhavebeenissuedbyWoodlandSchoolDistrict.TheChromebookshavebeensetupandwillbeusedbyanindividualstudentonly.NoonewillbeabletosignintotheChromebookexceptthestudent.FamilymembersandfriendsshouldnothaveuseoftheChromebook.Chromebooksthatarebrokenorfailtoworkproperlymustbetakentothetechnologydepartmentforanevaluationoftheequipment.NevertrytorepairtheChromebookyourselforhavesomeoneoutsidethedistrictworkonit,asthiscouldvoidthewarranty.TakeyourChromebooktothetechnologydepartmentassoonaspossibleifneededforrepairs.2.1General PrecautionsChromebooksareintendedforuseatschooleachday.ProtecttheChromebookatalltimesandfollowgeneralexpectationsregardingthedevice:
• TheChromebookisschoolpropertyandalluserswillfollowthepolicieswithintheStudentHandbookandChromebookagreement.
• Donotsharepasswordsorusernames.• Donotloandevicestootherstudents.• Donotborrowadevicefromanotherstudent.• Powercords,cables,orremovablestoragedevicesmustbeinsertedcarefullyinto
theChromebooktopreventdamage.• Chromebooksmustremainfreeofanywriting,drawing,stickers,orlabelsthat
cannotberemovedwithoutdamagingthedevice.o Administratorsorteachersmaydospotchecksforcomplianceatanytime.o WoodlandSchoolDistrictwillmakelabelsavailablethroughtheROAR
StoreorthroughtheteachersforpersonalizationoftheChromebook.o AtthistimethereisonlyonevendorthatsellstheChromebookcovers.
Theycanbepurchasedonlineandinformationwillbeprovided.§ Thereareseveralcolorsavailable;however,ORANGEisareserved
colorofthedistrictandcannotbeused.• NofoodordrinkisallowednexttoyourChromebook.• Ventscannotbecovered.• StudentsshouldnevercarrytheirChromebookswhilethescreenisopen.• ChromebooksmusthaveaWoodlandDistrict50inventorytagonthematall
timesandthistagmustnotberemovedoralteredinanyway.Iftheinventorytagisremoved,disciplinaryactionmayresult.
• Chromebooksmustneverbeleftinanunlockedlockeroranyunsupervisedarea.• Chromebooksareverysensitive toextremeheatandcold.Leavingdevices in
cars, direct sunlight,may expose them to these conditions and is potentiallyharmfultothedeviceandshouldbeavoided.
• DonotstackanybooksorotherheavymaterialsontopoftheChromebookasitcouldcausethedevicetobreak.
• Chromebooksshouldnotbeleftoutorusednearpets.• DistrictownedChromebooksshouldneverberepairedoutsideofthedistrictor
takentoathird-partycomputerrepairservice.

2.2UnauthorizedAccessand/orDamagetoChromebooksofOtherStudents
• Accesstoanotherperson’saccount,device,orcomputerwithouttheirconsentorknowledgeisconsideredhackingandisunacceptable.
• Ifastudentaccidentallyorpurposefullydamagesorbreaksanotherstudent’sChromebookand/orcharger,thestudentwhocausedthedamageisresponsibleforallexpensesrelatedtorepairsorreplacementoftheChromebookand/orcharger.
2.3StudentResponsibilities
• StudentsareresponsibleforthegeneralcareoftheChromebooktheyhaveissuedbythedistrict.
• StudentsareexpectedtouseChromebooksinanappropriatemannertoensurenodamagetothedevices.
• StudentsareexpectedtofullychargetheirChromebooksatnightandbringthemtoschooleachday.TheyareexpectedtobringtheirChromebookstoeachclassunlessotherwisedirectedbytheteacher.
• Ifastudent’sChromebookisbrokenorfailstoworkproperly,thestudentisresponsibleforreportingtheissueimmediatelyandtakingthedevicetotheTechnologyDepartment.SeeSection3.6ChromebooksUndergoingRepair
• StudentsareexpectedtouseChromebooksinaresponsiblemannerthroughobeyingschoolrulesandtheWoodlandSchoolDistrictAcceptableUsePolicy.
• TheChromebookswillberepairedatnofeeforaccidentaldamage.Intentionaldamageorvandalismcausingarepairwillbechargedtothefamilyuptothefullreplacementcost.
2.4ParentResponsibilitiesAChromebookhasbeenissuedtoyourchildforthedurationoftheschoolyeartoimproveandpersonalizehisorhereducationaspartoftheWoodlandInspires1:1Program.ItisessentialtofollowtheAcceptableUsePolicyandensurethesafeoperationofthedistrict’sChromebook.InorderforyourchildtousetheChromebookinclassandathome,youmustbewillingto:
• ReviewtheAcceptableUsePolicywithyourchild• Superviseyourchild’suseoftheChromebookathome• TakeprecautiontoprotectandstoretheChromebookathome• EnsureyourchildbringstheChromebooktoschoolfullycharged
2.5ChromebookIdentificationThedistrictwillmaintainalogofalldistrictownedChromebooksincludingserialnumber,assettagnumberandbarcodes,andnameandIDnumberofthestudentassignedtotheChromebook.DoNOTremoveanytagsontheChromebookthataresecured.Altering,defacing,ordestroyingtheWoodlandIdentificationTagorChromebookBarcodewillresultindisciplinaryaction.2.6NoExpectationOfPrivacyTheDistrictmay,withoutpriornoticeorconsent,log,supervise,access,view,monitor,

andrecorduseofstudentChromebooksatanytimeforanyreasonrelatedtotheoperationoftheDistrict.ByusingaChromebook,studentsagreetosuchaccess,monitoring,andrecordingoftheiruse.StudentsshouldnothaveaexpectationofconfidentialityorprivacywithrespecttoanyusageofaChromebook,regardlessofwhetherthatuseisfordistrictrelatedorpersonalpurposes,otherthanasspecificallyprovidedbylaw.Thedistrictdoesnothavetheabilitytoactivatethecameraremotelybutwillreviewalllogsandreportsavailable.
• Monitoring Softwareo Teachers,schooladministrators,andthetechnologystaffmayuse
monitoringsoftwarethatallowsthemtoviewthescreensandactivityonstudentChromebooksatschool.
2.7ContentFilterStudentsareboundbytheDistrictAcceptableUsePolicyandthishandbookwheneverusingtheirChromebook.AlthoughthedistrictwillbeusingawebfilterthatiscompliancewiththefederallymandatedChildren’sInternetProtectionAct(CIPA),studentsshouldworkathomeinplainsightoftheirparentsannotbehindacloseddoor.
2.8Music,Videos,Games,Apps,Extensions,orProgramsIllegaldownloadinganddistributionofcopyrightedworksareseriousoffensesthatcarrywiththemtheriskofsubstantialmonetarydamagesand,insomecases,criminalprosecution.CopyrightinfringementalsoviolatestheDistrict’sinternetserviceprovider'stermsofserviceandcouldleadtolimitationorsuspensionoftheDistrict’sinternetservice.Seemoreaboutcopyrightissuesatwww.respectcopyrights.org.2.9InappropriateContentParentsshouldsetexpectationsforappropriateapps,content,music,andvideosontheirstudent’sdevice.Inappropriatecontentwillnotbeallowedondevices.Appsrated17+orgameswithanESRBratingofMaturearenotallowed.NC-17ratedmovies,17+ratedapps,TVMAratedcontent,andExplicitContentisblockedonstudentChromebooks.Anyviolationofthispolicywillresultindeletionanddisciplinaryaction.2.10ReturningtheChromebookattheEndoftheYearTeacherswillarrangeforstudentstoreturnthedeviceattheendoftheschoolyearandcheckitinwiththeTechnologyDepartmentandtheLearningResourceCenter.Moreinformationwillfollowlaterintheyear.

3.0UsingYourChromebook3.1UsingYourChromebookatSchoolChromebooksareintendedforuseatschooleachday.InadditiontoteacherexpectationsforChromebookuse,schoolmessages,announcements,calendars,andschedulesmaybeaccessedusingtheChromebook.Itshouldbebroughttoallclassesunlessotherwisespecifiedbyateacher3.2UsingYourChromebookatHomeStudentsareencouragedtousetheirChromebooksathomeoroutsidetheschooldistrict.AwifiInternetconnectionwillberequiredforamajorityoftheChromebookuse.SomeactivitiescanbedonewithoutinternetandstudentswillreceiveinstructionsonhowtousetheChromebookstorageforworkingoffline.3.3ScreenCare
• TheChromebookscreenscanbedamagedifsubjectedtoheavyobjects,roughtreatment,somecleaningsolvents,andotherliquids.Thescreensareparticularlysensitivetodamagefromexcessivepressureonthescreen.
• Donotgraspscreenbywrappingyourhandaroundthescreen(yourthumbscouldshatterthescreen).
• DonotleanontopoftheChromebookwhenitisclosed.• DonotplaceanythingneartheChromebookthatcouldputpressureonthescreen.• Cleanthescreenwithasoft,dryclothoranti-staticcloth(donotuseanycleaning
solvents).• Donot“bump”theChromebookagainstlockers,walls,cardoors,floors,etc.• Donotpokethescreenwithanythingthatwillmarkorscratchthescreensurface.• Donotplaceanythingonthekeyboardbeforeclosingthelid(e.g.pens,pencils,or
disks).3.4ChargingYourChromebook
• Chromebooksmustbebroughttoschoolfullychargedeachday.• StudentsneedtochargetheirChromebookeachevening.• IncaseswhereuseoftheChromebookhascausedbatteriestobecome
discharged,studentsmaybeabletoconnecttheirChromebookstoapoweroutletinclass.
• Repeatviolationsmayresultindisciplinaryaction.3.5ChromebooksLeftatHome
• IfstudentsleavetheirChromebookathome,theyareresponsibleforgettingthecourseworkcompletedasiftheyhadtheirChromebookpresent.
• StudentswillneedtocontacttheirteacherforthedaytocheckoutaloanerdevicefromthenewlycreatedWildcatRescueCenterintheLRC.
• IfastudentleavestheirChromebookathomefortwoconsecutivedays,theymayberequiredtobringinthedevice,andtheteacherwillverifypossessionoftheassignedChromebook.

3.6ChromebooksUndergoingRepairIfaChromebookneedsrepair,thestudentwillnotifytheteacherandtaketheChromebooktotheWildcatRescueCenterintheLRC.
• Chromebookloanersmaybeissuedtostudentswhentheyleavetheirschool-issuedChromebookwiththeTechDepartmentforrepairs.
• InordertoreceivealoanerChromebook,studentsmustpresenttheirIDforcheckout.
• Theseloanersaregivenonashort-termbasisuntiltheoriginalChromebookhasbeenrepaired.
• ThestudentwillberesponsibleforanydamageorlosstotheloanerChromebookwhileitisintheirpossession.
• Teacherswilldocumenteachtimealoanerischeckedouttoastudent.• Studentsthatobtainaloanerwillberesponsibleforreturningthedevicebeforeor
afterschoolwhenreceivingoriginallyassignedChromebook.
TheTechnologyDepartmentwillnotifythestudentwhenrepairsarecompleteandthedevicecanbepickedup.ReportsofabusewillbereportedtotheAssistantPrincipal.3.7PhotoLibrary/Screensavers/BackgroundPhotos
• Inappropriatemediashouldnotbeonthedeviceandmaynotbeusedasascreensaverorbackgroundphoto.
• TheChromebookshouldnotbeusedtotakephotos,postthemonlineormanipulatethemtoembarrassthetarget.
3.8SoundSoundmustbemutedatalltimesunlesspermissionisobtainedfromtheteacherforinstructionalpurposes.Headphonesmaybeusedatthediscretionoftheteacher.3.9Deleting Files/AppsDonotdeleteanyapps,foldersorfilesthatyoudidnotcreateorthatyoudonotrecognize.Deletion of certain files or apps will interfere with your ability to complete certaincourseworkandmayinadvertentlyaffectyourgrades.3.10PrintingStudentswillnotbeprintingathomeoratschool.Studentswillbepublishingallworkdigitallyandwillsharetheirworkwiththeirteachersandpeers.

4.0Education
TheprimaryuseofChromebooksintheclassroomisforeducationalpurposes.Studentswilldevelopanawarenessofappropriateuseofthedeviceandlearnhowtonavigateavailabletoolsforeducation.4.1DigitalCitizenshipAllstudentswillparticipateinDigitalCitizenshipcoursethefirstthreeweeksoftheprogram.4.2GoogleApplicationsThestudentswillbeusingGoogleAppsforEducation,whichisasuiteofapplicationsandcollaborationtools.ThisincludesGoogleDocs(wordprocessing),Spreadsheets,Slides,DrawingsandForms.AllworkwillbestoredinthecloudthroughindividualGoogleAccountsmanagedbytheSchoolDistrict.StudentswillonlybeabletocommunicatewithWoodlandStaffandStudents.4.3ChromeAppsandExtensionsStudentsareallowedtoinstallappropriateChromeappsandextensionsfromtheChromeWebStore,butareresponsibleforthewebappsandextensionstheyinstall.Inappropriatematerialwillresultindisciplinaryaction.SomeappswillbeavailabletousewhentheChromebookisnotconnectedtotheWiFi.4.4SchoologyThestudentswillbeusingSchoology,whichisalearningmanagementsystemforcommunication,assignments,tests,quizzes,etc.Itisavirtualclassroomfortheteacherandstudentstoworkandcollaborateforlearninginsideandoutsidetheclassroom.TheenvironmentispasswordprotectedandhasanareaspecifictoWoodlandIntermediateandMiddleSchoolstaffandstudents.4.5StandardizedAssessmentsStudentsmayusedevicesforstandardizedtestingi.e.PARCCandMAPetc.
4.6ManagingFilesandSavingWorkThemajorityofthestudent’sworkwillbesavedintheGoogleDriveorinSchoologyandcanbeaccessedfromanycomputerwithanInternetconnection.Thestudent’sIDandPasswordwillsecureall.SomefilesmaybestoredontheChromebook’sharddrive.TeacherswillbeinstructingstudentsonhowtousetheChromebook’sstoragecapabilities.

AccessandUseofDistrictInformationNetworkSystems
Definition
WoodlandDistrict#50networksystemswill includeallcomputerhardwareandsoftwareownedandoperatedbythedistrict,districtelectronicmail(email),districtwebsites,districtonlineservicesandbulletin board systems and electronic information systems (e.g. Internet). “Use” of the district networksystemsincludesuseoforobtainingaccesstothesystemfromanyelectronicdevice,computerandallotherWIFItechnologies.Authority
The district’s information network systems were established to comprise part of the schoolcurriculum, facilitate communication between the school and community, and enhance theadministration of the district. The information network systems do not constitute a public forum. Thedistrict reserves and retains the right to regulate the content and links to the Information NetworkSystem.ThedistricthastherighttoanddoesmonitortheuseoftheInformationNetworkSystem.Exceptasprovidedbyfederalandstatestatutesprotectingtheconfidentialityofstudent’srecords,nouserof theInformationNetworkSystemshasanexpectationofprivacyin connectionwithsuchuse.Responsibility
TheWoodlandBoardofEducationrecognizesthatwhiletheInternetandon-lineservicesaffordaccesstolegitimatesourcesof informationforacademicandeducationalpurposes,theyalsoenableaccesstomaterialthatmaybeillegal,obsceneorindecent.Theuseofthecomponentsofthedistrict’sInformationNetworkSystemsandtheInternetshallbeconsistentwiththedistrict’sStrategicPlanandcurriculumadoptedbytheBoardofEducation.Prohibitions
District students,employees,contractors,andguestsareexpectedtoact ina responsible,ethicalandlegalmannerinaccordancewithFederalandStatelaw,districtpolicy,andtheDistrictAcceptableUseGuidelines.
Specifically,thefollowingusesareprohibited:a. Useofthenetworktofacilitateillegalactivityb. Useofthenetworkforcommercialorfor-profitpurposesc. Useofthenetworkforproductadvertisementorpoliticallobbyingd. Use of the network for hate mail, discriminatory remarks, and offensive or
inflammatorycommunicationincludingsextingandcyber-bullyinge. Unauthorizedorillegalinstallation,distribution,reproduction,oruseofcopyrightedmaterialsf. Useofthenetworktoaccessobsceneorpornographicmaterialg. Useofinappropriatelanguageorprofanityonthenetworkh. UseofthenetworktotransmitmateriallikelytobeoffensiveorobjectionabletorecipientsI. Useofthenetworktointentionallyobtainormodifyfiles,passwords,anddata
belongingtootherusersj. Impersonationofanotheruser,anonymityandpseudonymsk. Useofthenetworktofraudulentlycopycommunications,ormodifymaterialsisin

author’spriorconsentp. Theillegaluseofcopyrightedsoftwarebystudentsanddistrictemployeesis
prohibited.Anysoftwaretoordownloadedfromthenetworkshallbesubjectto“fairuse”guidelines.
Toprotecttheintegrityofthesystem,thefollowingguidelinesshallbefollowed:• ThedistricthastherighttoanddoesmonitortheuseoftheInformationNetworkSystems• Employeesandstudentsshallnotrevealtheirpasswordstoanotherindividual• Usersarenottouseacomputerthathasbeenloggedontousinganotherstudentorstaff
name.• Usersaretousecomputerstowhichtheyarepermittedaccess.• Anyuseridentifiedasasecurityriskhavinghistoryofproblemswithothercomputer
systemsmaybedeniedaccesstothenetwork.• Staffshouldonlyusethedistrict'snetworktocontactstudentsaboutschool-related
information.• Staffwillnotengageinnon-schoolrelatedcommunicationswithcurrentorformer
studentsundertheage of 18, on social networking sites, through blogs, wiki pages, textmessaging, or otherformsofonlinecommunication.
The district accepts no liability or other responsibility for costs related to commercial servicesaccessibleontheInternet,thataremeteredsurcharges,oranyothercostswhichmightberelatedtosueofthe Internet.Noone is to incurchargesthatmayinanyfashionbe invoicedto thedistrictwithoutpriorapprovalfromanadministrator.Safety
• Tothegreatestextentpossible,usersofthenetworkwillbeprotectedfromirrelevantorinappropriatemessages(i.e.spam).
• Any network user who receives threatening or unwelcome communications shallimmediatelybringthemtotheattentionofateacheroradministrator.
• Network users shall not publish or reveal personal information about themselves orothersonthenetwork.
• Network users shall not engage in instant messaging nor participate in chat rooms orvideoconferences,withoutpriorexpresspermissionwhileonschoolproperty.
Woodland’sprimaryconcerninmaintainingnetworkaccessisthatstudentsafetyandsecuritynotbe compromised at any time. Some of the most effective safety measures can best be implemented bystudentsthemselves.Parentsareencouragedtodiscussthefollowingsafetymeasureswiththeirchild(ren):
