A MESSAGE FROM THE FOUNDATION...

This past year we were once again humbled as to the generosity and commitment to the programs and equipment needs of the Brockville General Hospital (BGH) shown by YOU, our dedicated donors. On behalf of the Brockville and District Hospital Foundation (BDHF) Board of Directors, and its staff, we would like to thank you. Between April 1, 2017 to March 31, 2018 you have helped us to raise over 1.8 million dollars making it possible for us to help so many patients and their families in Leeds and Grenville.

2017 can be best described in three words….

GrowthWith the official announcement that the Phase II Redevelopment Project was a go, the Foundation’s years of preparation for this fundraising effort were put into action. The staff was enhanced to meet the needs of a 20 million dollar community share campaign. The BDHF Board of Directors and staff have been working diligently ever since. A new website was launched and all Campaign material designed. Our campaign logo, “Under one Roof,” captures the goal of having all services under one roof. A strong fundraising cabinet has been formed; led by Co-Chairs David Beatty and Mary Jean McFall. With the strength of this cabinet and the preparedness of the Foundation Board and staff, we are confident that our community share will not only be met but surpassed.

ChallengeWith growth come challenges, not only internally but externally. The Foundation has worked alongside the Senior Management and staff of the BGH during its time of transition under the leadership of Supervisor Kevin Empey. Kevin was instrumental in developing a strong Board of Directors, Senior Leadership Team as well as securing Nick Vlacholias as the new CEO/President in May 2017.

We are proud of our ability as a Foundation to stay to the course of our mission and core values during this time. External challenges include the competing needs of other charities in our community, and we strive to ensure the needs of our hospital are top of mind when giving decisions are being considered.

ChangeThe landscape of health care is changing, and the needs of hospitals throughout our province and our country are changing as well. More and more of the funding responsibilities are falling to the shoulders of a hospitals community. This change is also changing philanthropy. We respect your desire, your right to be informed on how your donation is being used to meet the needs, and its impact on the health care of those using the Brockville General Hospital.

We are grateful to you our donors during this year of growth, challenge and change creating a stronger foundation, hospital and most importantly, community.

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

OUR PROGRAMS

Brockville General Hospital Palliative Care Program

This program is best described as a “Hospice without Walls”. Our team of professional and volunteers

support clients and families in the Counties of Leeds and Grenville, who are coping with a life-limiting

illness. This program provides compassionate care to help meet the physical, psychological and spiritual

needs of patients and their families within the hospital setting and/or in the community.

This program relies heavily on community support.

Cardiac rehabilitation is an individualized program of exercise, education and counseling

designed to help you live a healthier lifestyle and reduce your risk of future heart events and

health problems. Cardiac rehabilitation is “the sum of activities required to ensure the

individual’s best possible physical, psychological, social, vocational and emotional status

so that individuals may, by their own efforts, resume and maintain an optimal quality of life

within the context of their family and their community.”

This program is not funded by the government.

HEART AND SOLSTICE

It was a sell-out crowd for the 9th Annual Heart & Solstice Event that took place at the home of Janet Eaton and Ray Wheeler. Threatening rain clouds did not put a damper on the festivities, which raised an amazing $25,740.00!

The Brockville and District Hospital Foundation (BDHF)’s Heart and Solstice Committee also honoured Gananoque Resident, Jack Keyes for his support to the Brockville General Hospital’s Cardiovascular Program (BCP), having recently donated $100,000 to the program. Over the years, Jack Keyes has provided $224,000 in support to Brockville General Hospital (BGH). Scotiabank was the proud lead sponsor matching up to $5000 for this event and the BCP Program. Brenda Hill, Branch Manager of the King St. Location was proud to boost the good works Scotiabank has been able to do in our community. Driven by the banks employees, this has truly been a team effort with the community of Brockville.

“The BCP gives support to people recovering from heart surgery or episodes, guiding them into healthy post-surgery lives,” says Geraghty. “Having such a resource in our own community means the families also benefit with little loss of time or money from having to make long drives for follow-up sessions with their loved ones.” - Adrian Geraghty

The BCP receives no government funding and relies solely on generous community donors, and hardworking,

dedicated groups such as the Heart & Solstice Committee to raise funds for the Program.

2017 FRIENDS OF PALLIATIVE CARE GOLF TOURNAMENT

The Friends of Palliative Care Golf Tournament was held Wednesday, August 31st at the Brockville Country Club. The weather was deemed the nicest day of the summer. Additional highlights to the day included a hole in one by Andy Unger, and the draw including sports celebrities Ottawa Senators Cody Cici and Mark Stone. The tournament raised a resounding $210,000!

The Brockville Country Club was an excellent host and served a lovely meal for guests, who also enjoyed an array of amazing live and silent auction prize items.

We would like to thank all of our sponsors, volunteers, golfers and all those involved in this terrific

event. A special shout-out the Brockville Railway Tunnel Committee for providing guided tours for our morning golfers.

Our Senior Advisor remembered...By Dave Publow

John Broome was born and grew up in Brockville. However, he spent his adult life in Montreal where he worked and raised his family, with his wife Mickey. When John retired in 1992, he returned to Brockville and quickly became involved in the community which he loved. He became a member of the Board of the St. Vincent de Paul Hospital Foundation, now the Brockville & District Hospital Foundation. And he was also a member of the founding committee of the Friends of St. Vincent Golf Tournament.

We are about to celebrate the 25th edition of this tournament – now the Friends of Palliative Care Golf Tournament – and we will remember our friend and mentor who remained on the Tournament Committee since its inception 25 years ago. John was the quiet force behind the organization of this event, always counted upon to provide his wisdom, counsel and advice. He guided our group on the proper way to organize an event for which we could be proud, always using his quiet wit.

You will be missed, my friend. Thanks for your guidance, your wisdom and your loyalty.

Brockville General Hospital’s Diagnostic Imaging Has Gone Paperless!! Thanks to the many donors who contributed to the 2017 Annual Appeal!

In November 2017, the Foundation kicked-off its two part Annual Appeal to raise funds for new technology to conduct CT Colonography (CTC) at Brockville General Hospital; as well as raising funds to upgrade the Diagnostic Imaging Department’s computer system to move to an electronic worklist.

The CTC is a system that uses 3D reconstruction software to create a virtual colonoscopy from images taken during a CT scan. The patient is prepped and has their colon is filled with CO2 prior to imaging to create a gas filled bowl allowing for detection of small polyps and early cancers. This allows the patient to avoid screening with direct visualization of their colon via a scope.

Part II of the Annual Appeal was to upgrade the Diagnostic Imaging Department’s computer system to go paperless. On March 28th, the Diagnostic Imaging Department began the move to going paperless which will allow staff to work faster and safer. This upgrade will also improve communication, get patients their results faster, and improve work flow within the hospital.

The Brockville and District Hospital Foundation (BDHF) is extremely pleased to announce that they have reached the target goal of raising $125,000 for a CT Colonography and Diagnostic Imaging Support System for Brockville General Hospital (BGH). Not only was the goal reached, but was surpassed reaching over $163,000.00 well before the December 31st, 2017 deadline.

“I am continuously humbled at the over-whelming generosity of Brockville and the surrounding communities,” stated BDHF’s Executive Director, Joan Simon.

“The BHDF Board, and staff, are very grateful to all who supported the 2017 Annual Appeal.”

“CT Colonography is an extremely important adjunct which will lead to a decrease in the incidence of colorectal cancer in Leeds and Grenville counties by allowing for increased polyp detection. This tool will also result in cancers being diagnosed at an earlier stage thereby improving survival.”
