was the advice of one of our supporters this past year. This became the seedling that grew into our new Community Impact Model. This three-part model focuses on deeper, cross-issue impacts throughout Santa Barbara County and consists of our Leadership Programs, our Alumni Communities, and our Impact Network.

The third part of the model, our Impact Network, is an exploratory space for us. We leaned into learning what can we do together that we can’t do alone with our first ever Possibility Lab, which was attended by 140 of our our network members. The outcome was the launch of our Impact Lab. We are modeling the way of experimentation with the pilot phase of this Impact Lab. We aren’t sure what the outcome will be, but we know we will learn, adjust, and keep learning.

Carrie RandolphExecutive Director

Dear Friend,

Resilience. Renewal. Rejuvenation. In 2018, these powerful terms aptly describe Santa Barbara, as well as Leading From Within’s convictions. We are guided by the belief that the cultivation and fostering of a network of leaders in our community who trust one another enable leaders to work together to deepen their impact.

It’s been 10 years since our first program launched and 6 years since we incorporated as a nonprofit. We reflect on how our ideologies equipped our healthy growth and successful efforts. Our Alumni Communities continue to flourish with increased self-management, independence, and initiative. Both the Possibility Lab and Impact Lab focus on harnessing the incredible potential within and between our four leadership networks. Currently, we serve more than 260 leaders in nonprofit, public services, and the private sector from more than 200 organizations throughout the entire Santa Barbara County region.

As we enthusiastically progress onward, there is much to achieve together. We thank you for joining us in developing and sustaining our network of leaders, who are directly addressing complex issues and challenges in our communities with dignity, impact and with care.

In gratitude and appreciation,

Nancy Swanson and Lois MitchellInterim Board Co-Chairs during Ken Saxon’s Sabbatical

Leading From Within celebrates the 14 graduates from the first cohort of Leading for Community Impact, LFW’s newest leadership program serving social sector leaders from Santa Maria, Lompoc, and other northern Santa Barbara County communities.

Since 2012, the number of Santa Barbara County social sector leaders in our Alumni Community has increased by more than two hundred.

Katherine Harvey Fellows was run by Santa Barbara Foundation from 2009 to 2012. In 2013, LFW inherited the Katherine Harvey Fellows program and welcomed 77 Katherine Harvey Fellows alumni into our network. The increase in leaders in 2013 includes the 68 Katherine Harvey Fellows alumni who continued to serve Santa Barbara County.

The disasters that struck our community this winter left many families struggling with no safety net. “It struck a chord because the livelihood of our students are being affected,” explains Eder Gaona-Macedo, Executive Director of Future Leaders of America, Inc. (FLA) and Leading From Within alum.

Eder lights the way in supporting our community by breaking barriers and advocating for those who have little to no voice. In the midst of expanding FLA to include Santa Maria, Santa Barbara, Oxnard, and soon Carpinteria, Eder has begun new endeavors by partnering with other local organizations to create the UndocuFund. Collaborating organizations include

“My experience with Leading From Within gave me the confidence to jump into the uncertain and uncomfortable. Without LFW and the self- reflection it brought, I am not sure I would have run for public office.” Eric Friedman, City Council MemberCity of Santa BarbaraLFW Alum

More than 88% of respondents attributed their participation with Leading From Within to contributing to this change.

Central Coast Alliance United for a Sustainable Economy (CAUSE), Mixteco Indigena Community Organizing Project (MICOP), and Ventura County Community Foundation.

This fund assists local undocumented families who are economically impacted by the disasters and are excluded from many relief programs. Eder shares, “The collaborative nature of this initiative makes it feel less like work and has turned it into a labor of love.”

Since participating in the Emerging Leaders program, alumni have stepped into roles of increased scope and influence.

Respondents to a 2017 retrospective survey reported that:

have stepped into professional roles of greater scope or influence.

have stepped into volunteer roles of greater scope or influence.

have taken on projects or stepped into roles that impact the larger community, beyond the scope of their organizations.

LEARNING We continued to learn, adapt, and keep learning. We committed to growing a community of leaders that reflects the diversity of our county. • We introduced Leading for Community Impact

in 2016-2017 to serve leaders based in Santa Maria, Lompoc, and other northern Santa Barbara County communities.

• We are committed to cultivating a community of leaders that reflects the racial and ethnic makeup of our county. We are working to improve our outreach, recruitment, and data collection to support our progress toward this goal.

We provided opportunities for our alumni to connect across boundaries.

• We recognize the value that occurs when leaders share perspectives, provide support, and collaborate across sector, issue, and organizational boundaries. On page 12, read about our first ever Possibility Lab.

GROWTH • VISION • IMPACT • LEARNING • POSSIBILITY • FINANCES • LEADERSHIP • GRATITUDE

We use the insights we gain through evaluation and reflection to help us better prepare our alumni to exercise leadership in their workplaces and communities.

We continued to develop our programs. • We advanced our curricula and explored ways to

integrate attention to identity and bias throughout our programs.

• We implemented a 360 degree feedback process for increased understanding of leaders own strength and opportunities for growth.

• We supported participants in implementing strategic, collaborative, social sector projects through capstone projects.

We continued to explore what is possible, take risks, learn, and adapt.

• We created the Impact Lab to leverage the collective potential of the larger network and role model experimentation. Pages 12-13 share the way we experiment with these strategies.

POSSIBILITY We experimented with ways to amplify the impact we can have together that we can’t have alone.

We empowered leaders to work in collaborative efforts that achieve transformative social impact.

“Seeing the huge community of LFW participants that has evolved, being encouraged to trust and collaborate with each other, and being reminded that we are all capable of making real change was incredible.”

Possibility Lab: On November 1, 2017, more than 140 Leading From Within alumni and partners came together for Possibility Lab, a one-day gathering designed to facilitate learning, connecting, and exploring possibilities for how this community of social sector leaders might grow its impact.*

Impact Lab 1.0: A group of more than 20 leaders from the LFW network convened throughout early 2018 to plan the next phase of this exploration. We created the Impact Lab to leverage the collective potential of the larger network and role model experimentation.

We are stepping into the unknown, learning by doing. In Spring 2018, we are embracing the challenge of “creating the simplest design possible to launch a project, test the lab, and learn!”

*Participant reflections on their Possibility Lab experience and on possibilities they see for the larger LFW network to grow its collective impact can be found at http://leading-from-within.org/possibility-lab-evaluation-report/.

Attendees for the Possibility Lab engage in a conversation around a mutual topic of interest related to the social sector.

Carl Palmer, Courage to Lead alumni and founder of Legacy Works, leads the group through the Impact Lab design process.
