2017 Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education Examination Results Released

About 61,600 candidates of the 2017 Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education Examination (HKDSE) will receive their results notices tomorrow (12 July) from the Hong Kong Examinations and Assessment Authority (HKEAA).

This year, a total of 52,058 school candidates from 489 participating schools and 9,566 private candidates entered the HKDSE. The number of all candidates has decreased by 9.5% from last year.

Over 86% of day school candidates registered for two to three elective subjects in addition to the four core subjects, namely Chinese Language, English Language, Mathematics and Liberal Studies.

A total of 34,660 day school candidates obtained level 2 or above in five subjects including Chinese Language and English Language. This represents 69.7% of day school candidates, a decrease of 1.5% as compared to last year. These candidates are eligible to apply for sub-degree courses and relevant civil service posts.

The percentage of day school candidates who have met the general entrance requirements for local undergraduate university programmes is 40.9%, which has dropped by 1.3% as compared to last year. These 20,885 day school candidates obtained level 3 or above in both Chinese Language and English Language, and level 2 or above in Mathematics Compulsory Part and Liberal Studies.

This year, 86.1% of day school candidates attained level 2 or above in Chinese Language, representing an increase of 0.9% as compared to 2016, while 55.8% and 9.1% were awarded level 3 or above and level 5 or above respectively, which are similar to last year.

In English Language, 77% and 52.2% of day school candidates obtained level 2 or above and level 3 or above respectively, both representing a decrease of about 3% as compared to 2016 but are comparable to awards in previous years. The percentage of day school candidates achieving level 5 or above is 10.1%, which is similar to last year’s figure. In Mathematics Compulsory Part, 81.1% and 14.5% of day school candidates attained level 2 or above and level 5 or above respectively, which are comparable to last year.

The results in Liberal Studies are also similar to last year’s, with 89.5% of day school candidates obtaining level 2 or above and 8.9% achieving level 5 or above.

In addition to the 24 Category A subjects, the HKDSE also offers 40 Category B Applied Learning subjects and six Category C Other Language subjects in 2017. Candidates who took Category B Applied Learning subjects achieved ‘Attained’ or above in 92.6% of the 3,464 subjects assessed and ‘Attained with Distinction’ in 23% of those subjects.

A total of 347 candidates entered Category C Other Language subjects this year. These subjects were examined using the Advanced Subsidiary (AS) level question papers from Cambridge International Examinations (CIE). The results of the June 2017 series examinations will be released on 14 August while candidates who sat the November 2016 series examinations had already received their results in February 2017.

More than 11,600 invigilator-sessions were organised for the written papers and listening tests, which were held in 396 schools this year. Special examination arrangements were made for 2,442 candidates with special educational needs and a total of 207 special examination centres were set up.

This year, approximately 820,000 scripts were marked onscreen in 14 assessment centres throughout the territory. About 4,200 markers, 400 marking assistants and 1,000 oral examiners were appointed to assess candidates’ performance.

Arrangements for the release of results on 12 July School candidates should collect their results notices from respective schools and an online results enquiry service is available to evening school candidates from 7:00am on 12 July.

Private candidates will be notified by post and can also check their results online. Those who do not receive their results notices by post on 12 July should contact the HKEAA on 3628 8860 or visit our office located at 12/F, Southorn Centre, 130 Hennessy Road, Wan Chai between 8:30am and 5:00pm on 13 July.

Service hours of the Public Examinations Information Centre (PEIC) and the enquiry counter in our Southorn Centre office will be extended to provide support for candidates and schools.

Notes for Editors: The general entrance requirements for sub-degree programmes are five subjects at

level 2 or above (including Chinese Language and English Language) in the HKDSE or equivalent.

The general entrance requirements for undergraduate programmes of local universities are level 3 or above in Chinese Language and English Language, and level 2 or above in Mathematics Compulsory Part and Liberal Studies. Apart from the four core subjects, institutions may also set other admission requirements.

Grade point distribution in the best five subjects (Statistics related to university admission)

在統計表內，計算最佳五科的總積點已包括甲類及乙類學科的成績。在甲類學科中，達第 5**級為 7 分，第 5*級為 6 分，第 5 級為 5

分，第 4 級為 4 分，第 3 級為 3 分，第 2 級為 2 分，以及第 1 級為 1 分。若選修乙類學科並取得「達標並表現優異」成績，會被某些

學士學位課程視為甲類學科的第 3 級成績。此積點分佈統計表只可作為參考，各大學或院校收生時亦會考慮其他因素，如有關課程的

特別入學要求、報名人數、學額及考生的學生學習概覽和面試表現等。 Both Category A and Category B subjects are included in the calculation of the total grade points of the best five subjects shown in the table below. In Category A subjects, level 5** is counted as 7 points, level 5* as 6 points, level 5 as 5 points, level 4 as 4 points, level 3 as 3 points, level 2 as 2 points, and level 1 as 1 point. ‘Attained with Distinction’ in Category B subjects is deemed comparable to level 3 in Category A subjects for admission to some degree programmes.
