A Message from the FoundationIt is heartening to witness firsthand the impact of the Mercy Health Foundation Clark & Champaign Counties on our region’s healthcare services and programs. Whether assisting with the purchase of state-of-the-art cancer treatment equipment, providing funding for prescription medications for those with need, or making mammography screenings available across our communities regardless of ability to pay, our Foundation supports initiatives that provide access to and advancements in local healthcare.

In 2017, donations to the Mercy Health Foundation totaled $1,790,250, a 34 percent increase over the previous year. We are pleased to have distributed $803,348 in support of healthcare initiatives in Clark and Champaign Counties. The ongoing success of our Foundation is only possible because of the generosity of local supporters, including Mercy Health employees, collaboration with community partners and the tireless work of our Mercy Health Foundation Board of Directors – a visionary group of local individuals who are passionate about the ongoing and ever changing healthcare needs of the communities we serve.

We are blessed to have the support of so many, which is a testament to the legacy of local health care and the role it has played in building and bettering our community. A child’s health, physical growth, and mental development strongly influence his or her ability to perform in school and in life. Children with developmental delays and/or disabilities often miss opportunities for growth and are at risk for performing below their abilities.

Locally, Mercy Health offers Pediatric Rehabilitation which provides outpatient physical, occupational, and speech-language therapy to children with disabilities, developmental delays, and acquired injuries. With offices in Urbana and in Springfield at the Fountain Avenue Campus, staff members provide young children and their families with therapy and skills to live fulfilling lives. Mercy Health Pediatric Rehab worked with 382 new patients in 2015 and 500 new patients in 2016 and in 2017.

An accessible outdoor playground, the third phase of a three-phase expansion, was completed in October 2017 and includes swings and other play equipment which accommodate a variety of developmental needs. The playground was completely funded through the Mercy Health Foundation Clark & Champaign Counties.

Springfield Pediatric Rehab

“All of our parents and patients are excited at the prospect of using the playground to help their child learn how to safely and functionally play,” stated Jenna Christello PT, DPT, Supervisor of Pediatric Rehab. “The playground will be used as part of therapy and to help motivate the child to engage in all therapy activities. It will also provide children with the opportunity to learn to interact more with their peers in a community based setting.”

REACH Provides Lifeline for Many in Our CommunitiesREACH (Recovery, Education, Advocacy, Care, and Hope) cares for individuals struggling with drug, alcohol and tobacco addiction through non-judgmental, compassionate treatment focused on the person and the addiction. Services include outpatient drug and alcohol treatment for adolescents and adults, inpatient detoxification, community outreach presentations and tobacco treatment.

Since its beginning in 1995, REACH has doubled in size. Ten trained professionals conduct the outpatient treatment program and other services from locations in Springfield and Urbana. Last year was the busiest year yet for REACH which includes:

• treatment to 537 new patients, up from 353 in 2016

• assessment of 210 patients for detoxification needs in 2017, 151 of which successfully completed medical detox at Springfield Regional Medical Center

• caring for a total of 1,815 clients in its intensive outpatient program

• conducting 3,058 individual counseling sessions

• facilitating 309 group therapy sessions, with 3,333 patients attending those sessions

• providing medically-assisted treatment to 27 patients who had a total 70 injections

• participating in more than 50 community outreach programs to provide education aimed at preventing children and adults from misuse of drugs, alcohol and tobacco

• reporting a 96% program satisfaction rate as reported by patients

As the opiate crisis has intensified, so has REACH. “To give you an idea of the extent of this issue, in 2008 we diagnosed 14 percent of REACH patients with opiate abuse or dependence,” stated Sheri Haines, MA, LPC, LICDC-CS, CGP, manager of REACH. “By 2016, that number rose to 38 percent of patients with a diagnosis of mild to severe opiate dependence and last year, it topped 48 percent. The needs of individuals struggling with opiate addiction required that we respond with additional treatment options for those patients who come to us wanting to reclaim their lives. We have also significantly stepped up our efforts to educate our community on prevention,”

REACH was the beneficiary of Mercy Health Foundation Clark & Champaign Counties’ 2017 Kaleidoscope of Hope Gala, which raised more than $220,000 in support of the program.

More information is available on REACH by calling 937-390-5338 (Springfield) or 937-653-3001 (Urbana). REACH is certified by the Ohio Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services and the Joint Commission surveys the program to ensure it meets national standards for care.


Mercy Health — Springfield and Urbana provides Mobile Mammography services for easier access to quality care. The mobile unit uses the same high-quality technology and equipment found at the Springfield Regional Imaging Center with the flexibility of 3D and 2D screening options. The Mobile Mammography program provides convenient 15-minute screening appointments without the need for a doctor’s order.

Since launching the program at the beginning of 2017, Mobile Mammography has provided 1,069 screenings at locations in Clark, Champaign and surrounding communities, including 98 no-cost screenings provided by grants and donations through Mercy Health Foundation Clark & Champaign Counties. At least 12 breast cancers were detected through these screening events.

A mammogram is the best screening tool for early detection of breast cancer. One in eight women will develop breast cancer in her lifetime - 85% of those women have no family history. Symptoms of breast cancer are not the same in all women. It is recommended all women get a mammogram each year starting at age 40 with a baseline screening age between 35 and 39.


Julia Baugh was busy enjoying retirement, spending time with her husband and great grandkids, gardening and sewing, when she lost track of her regular medical appointments. Without realizing it, time passed quickly and Julia had missed several important annual screenings.

Julia has now taken it upon herself to personally remind her family members to schedule their mammograms, even the men. “I want everyone to be aware and to get the tests they need,” she said. “In our society people get rushed, and they don’t pay attention to their health when they don’t feel sick or when it’s inconvenient.”

She credits the donors who give to the Mercy Health Foundation and support the mobile mammography van with giving her the chance to be there for her great grandkids and to fulfill her retirement dreams. “It’s a blessing that they had the foresight of knowing that people of all walks of life need this convenient service,” she said. “When I’m given a second chance like this, I plan to make the most of it. I’m very lucky. That van probably saved my life.”

have saved her life. A friend who works at Mercy Health Springfield shared some information about a new mobile mammography van, funded by the Mercy Health Foundation, which was coming to her area, so she called to schedule an appointment.

Fortunately, Julia visited the mobile mammography van just in time. She was the first appointment on the first day the van visited her area and her 3D mammography scans immediately detected breast cancer. “I was completely shocked to get this diagnosis,” Julia said. “I was very healthy and we have no history of cancer in either side of my family, so I wasn’t sure what was going to happen to me. All I could think about was that I wanted to be around for my family.” Based on the results, she was able to quickly schedule the surgery and treatments she needed to save her life.

Recognizing a History of GenerosityThe seeds of generosity in our communities go back to 1887 when Springfield businessmen, Ross Mitchell and John Thomas gave funds to establish the first local hospital. That gift made it possible to care for the sick without having to travel miles. It also established a tradition of supporting healthcare in our region as well as giving root to Mercy Health Springfield Regional Medical Center.

In recognition of the strong heritage supporting health care in the communities we serve, the Mitchell-Thomas Circle gift club was established by the Mercy Health Foundation Clark & Champaign Counties in 2017. A gift of $130 or more to the Mercy Health Foundation will place you in the Mitchell-Thomas Circle. Donations may be designated to any area of care at Mercy Health or given to the area of greatest need. All donations will help provide the high-quality compassionate healthcare available to you, your family, friends and neighbors. Together we will continue to care for one another, right here at home.

Mercy Health is deeply committed to improving the health of the communities it serves. To assist in meeting the emerging needs in Clark and Champaign Counties, the Mercy Health Foundation created the Legacy Fund in 2017. This fund was established to support internal and external programs that directly benefit our area residents. Today, Mercy Health provides support for prescription medication for qualifying patients, delivers health care services to areas of our communities where most needed and assists in making health screenings available to those who are uninsured. While these are some of today’s most pressing needs, we don’t know what the future holds. Donations to the Legacy Fund will help prepare us to address the significant, evolving needs in our community. Your partnership in this important initiative will make a difference in our community and the people we care about most.

Patty Young has always been dedicated to making a positive difference for others. That’s why it was no surprise in 2004 when she focused her energy on organizing a coalition of 12 African American women. Known as Sisters United for Prevention, the group’s purpose was to promote cancer awareness, provide education and support those in need in the minority community. At the time of the group’s organization, Patty was a facilitator for the Look Good-Feel Better program for cancer patients, and found herself wondering why black women were not participating in the program. While progress was being made to increase awareness and early detection of the disease, statistics on late stage breast cancer diagnosis were not improving among the minority women in our community. Sisters United was one way Patty could bring a variety of resources together to help and to inspire others to reach for a healthier life.

Today, Sisters United for Prevention is continuing its mission of educating, creating awareness and supporting those with cancer in our local minority community. Annually, the group hosts a fashion show and awareness luncheon which is attended by

hundreds. The event features a medical speaker, a fashion show with models who are cancer survivors and a survivor speaker. Proceeds from the event provide support for patients in need at the Springfield Cancer Center and other cancer related education and care in the community. Members of Sisters United are active in a variety of outreach initiatives throughout the year including Springfield’s CultureFest, Pan Ohio Hope Ride, Clark-Champaign County Colorectal Coalition and Springfield Federation of Women’s Clubs.

Fourteen years after its founding, the outreach by Sisters United for Prevention has grown tremendously along with its members passion for supporting and educating those in the minority community with cancer concerns. With a spirit of understanding, compassion, and care, Sisters United for Prevention is helping to empower African American women and men to be aware of the warning signs of cancer, to be screened and, when needed, be engaged in treatment. Their efforts are making lives better for others, each and every day.

Happy Half Marathon Supports the Springfield Cancer Center

When Mike Maloney was battling cancer in 2011, three of his family members ran a 13.1-mile course from Springfield to Yellow Springs to train for a marathon to raise funds for Mike’s medical bills. It was through this experience that the idea for a race was formed and the first official Happy Half Marathon was held in 2012. Today, the Happy Half Marathon continues in memory of Mike Maloney.

In 2017 over 200 runners from as far away as White Cloud, Michigan came together to raise $6,000 to benefit the Springfield Cancer Center. “I speak for both Alex (Mike Maloney’s son) and myself when I say we feel very fortunate to be part of this race, stated Chris Meister, Race Co-director. “Donating money for such a worthy cause was a true honor for us.”

Now in its 6th year, the 2018 Happy Half Marathon will take place on August 18th. The course begins at Springfield High School, runs along the Miami Valley Scenic Bike Trail, and ends in beautiful Yellow Springs. This route is shaded and has a negative grade, making it a comfortable run for beginning or experienced runners to achieve their athletic goals.

Proceeds from the event will be donated to the Springfield Cancer Center to benefit local cancer patients being treated at the Center.
