RETROSPECTIVE OF 'EL REY' April 20-22Hostos Center for the Arts and Culture

presents the first ever multi-day retrospective

of the life and legacy of one of the most important figures

in Latin music, through concerts, panels, film, workshops, and more. With support from the National Endowment for the Arts, the retrospective is under the artistic direction of former Puente musical director José Madera, Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra bassist / band leader Carlos Henríquez, and Puente historian and archivist Joe Conzo, Sr.

The 18-piece Mambo Legends, under the leadership of José Madera, which features many Puente band alumni, will perform music of Puente’s early years from 1950 – 1966 known as the “Palladium era,” including music from the six different configurations of the orchestra which has not been heard in over 50 years.
