KYLE WALTERSGENERAL MANAGER

WA

LTERS

Kyle Walters enters his fourth season overseeing the football operations of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. He officially became the General Manager on November 26, 2013, the 2017 season marking his seventh year with the organization.

Walters continued his rebuild of the franchise in 2016, while also seeing some immediate success in seeing his club finish with an 11-7 record. Andrew Harris and Justin Medlock – two of Walters’ key free agent signings - proved very successful, both achieving CFL All-Star recognitions. Kyle also orchestrated a trade for quarterback Drew Willy in which the club acquired the first overall selection in the 2017 CFL Draft and CFL All-Star defensive back TJ Heath. Matt Nichols, whom he acquired for a late round draft pick late in the 2015 season, took over the starting duties and went 10-3, leading the club to its first playoff appearance in five seasons.

Walters continues to be very active in showing his ability to make whatever changes are necessary to improve the on-field product. He was the most active GM during 2016 Free Agency, making it the busiest free agency period the organization had seen in years. Walters acquired impactful players such as Weston Dressler, Andrew Harris, Ryan Smith and Justin Medlock over the 2016 off-season. He is constantly active in his pursuit of Canadian free agents, courting and signing one of the league’s top defensive linemen in 2015, Jamaal Westerman. He also oversees the CFL Draft process for the organization, which has produced two starting offensive lineman in the past three seasons – guard Sukh Chungh and centre Matthias Goossen, as well as CFL All-Star safety Taylor Loffler.

In Walters’ first season as General Manager, he immediately began his overhaul of the roster, focusing mainly on improving the Canadian talent, while being active in free agency and continuing to add pieces throughout the season that he and his staff felt would improve the football team. He managed the club to a 7-11 mark.

Walters made the move from the sidelines to the management chair as he began his tenure as Assistant General Manager and Director of Canadian Scouting with the Blue Bombers in 2013.

Concentrating mostly on scouting at the CIS level prior to his General Manager appointment, Walters also assisted in the football operations department by helping to manage the team’s salary cap, negotiate contracts and recruit players.

As Winnipeg’s Special Teams Coordinator, Walters oversaw a unit in 2012 that boasted one of the league’s most electrifying returners in Demond Washington, whose team-leading 2,011 all-purpose yards ranked him fourth in the league and was the most by any Blue Bomber since Fred Reid amassed 2,035 in 2009. The punt return teams sprung Washington for two touchdowns, and in 2011, the cover units never surrendered a single major.

Walters joined Winnipeg after spending four seasons as the Head Coach with the University of Guelph Gryphons where he posted a 13-18-1 overall record and advanced to the playoffs in three of the four seasons he was at the helm. In 2007, Guelph had one of their best seasons in recent history, finishing 4-4 and hosting not only their first home playoff game since 1986, but also the 100th Yates Cup – their first Yates appearance since winning it in 1996. Walters was also the Special Teams Coordinator from 2007-2009 for Team West in the CIS All-Star game.

The native of St. Thomas, Ontario, previously served as the Gryphons full-time Assistant Coach and Defensive Coordinator from 2004-2005. Before entering the college ranks, Walters spent the 2003 season as the Assistant Special Teams Coach of the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.

As a player, Walters was drafted in the second round (10th overall) in the 1996 CFL Draft and played safety and halfback with Hamilton, helping them win the 1999 Grey Cup. His 78 special teams tackles ranks fourth all-time in Hamilton Tiger-Cat history and he was named a team captain during his final three seasons.

In college, Walters suited up for the University of Guelph from 1992-1996 and was named team captain during his senior year. He helped them capture the Yates Championship in 1992 and 1996.

DANNY MCMANUSASSISTANT GENERAL MANAGER, DIRECTOR OF U.S. SCOUTING

The former Winnipeg Blue Bomber quarterback returns for his fourth season in the club’s front office as the Assistant General Manager, Director of U.S. Scouting. McManus continuously monitors the southern United States; attending NCAA games, NFL pre-season games, and dozens of workouts, while working closely with General Manager Kyle Walters on the development of the current roster. McManus facilitates free agent camps throughout the United States throughout the offseason along with Assistant General Manager Ted Goveia and National Scout Craig Smith.

Prior to his appointment with the Blue Bombers, McManus – a Canadian Football Hall of Famer - spent the past three seasons with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats as their Head U.S. Scout, managing all aspects of the organization’s U.S. recruitment. McManus also spent 2009-2010 as the Tiger-Cats Southeast Regional Scout. He joined the Tiger-Cats staff in 2008 as an Offensive Assistant before moving into the scouting department in 2009.

As a player, McManus enjoyed one of the Canadian Football League’s most illustrious careers, spending 17 seasons in the league with the B.C. Lions, Winnipeg Blue Bombers, Edmonton Eskimos, Hamilton Tiger-Cats and Calgary Stampeders.

McManus spent three seasons with the Blue Bombers (1990-92) before leaving as a free agent, and played in 54 games, getting six starts and six wins (6-0). The Bombers had a combined record of 32-22 during his time with the club, won three of their four playoff games, played in all three Division Finals and captured two Eastern titles. McManus played on the 1990 Bombers’ Grey Cup championship team, coming into the game as a late reliever for Tom Burgess and throwing a touchdown pass to Rick House in the 50-11 win over Edmonton. He also played in the 1992 Grey Cup for Winnipeg and completed 7-of-18 passes for 150 yards. Over three seasons, Danny threw for 3,084 yards and 16 touchdowns.

At the time of his retirement, McManus finished his career second in all-time CFL passing yards with 53,255, and ranked second with 6,689 pass attempts and 3,640 pass completions. He also finished sixth all-time in regular season games with 298 while suiting up in 18 playoff games. He won three Grey Cup titles with three separate teams in 1990 (Winnipeg), 1994 (B.C.) and 1999 (Hamilton).

Before joining Hamilton’s staff, McManus spent one season as an analyst for TSN’s CFL broadcast team.

TED GOVEIAASSISTANT GENERAL MANAGER, DIRECTOR OF PLAYER PERSONNEL

Ted Goveia returns for his fourth season in 2017 as the club’s Assistant General Manager, Director of Player Personnel, after joining the organization in December of 2013. Previously, Goveia held down the role of Director of Player Personnel with the Toronto Argonauts, working free agent camps and scouting in both the United States and Canada, as well as coordinating the CFL Canadian Draft. Prior to that, Goveia had been responsible for recruitment strategies in both Canada and the U.S. for the Argos, scouting various NFL pre-season camps. He first joined the Argos in 2010 as an assistant coach and previously spent 15 years in various coaching and recruitment capacities throughout the CIS and Canadian Junior Football ranks.

Ted Goveia has a long resume full of Canadian coaching and football recruitment experience. He’s held positions at the University of British Columbia, McMaster University and Mount Allison University, and he spent the 2010 season coaching the Toronto Argonauts’ running backs. He’s also held fulltime coaching positions in the CJFL, at the high school level, and gained extensive experience as a guest coach in the CFL. All told, Goveia has been part of every level of football in Canada.

Goveia joined the UBC Thunderbirds as the Offensive Coordinator in 2004. In 2006, he was promoted to Head Coach and GM and was responsible for developing a number of CFL prospects who went on to be drafted and play for a variety of teams in the league.

Goveia wore many different hats during his time at McMaster University from 2001-04: He coached the receivers, running backs and special teams while also serving as the team’s Recruitment Coordinator. In this role, he was responsible for all aspects of recruitment, which resulted in some of the largest and most successful recruitment classes in the history of the program. He helped the Marauders to three straight Yates Cup finals.

Goveia held the position of Recruitment Coordinator at his alma mater, Mt. Allison University, from 1994-98. In addition to his position, he served as Offensive Coordinator, Offensive Line Coach and Defensive Line Coach. He eventually also took charge of all administrative aspects of the football program while helping the Mounties set new CIS team and individual records. Goveia helped Mount Allison to the AUS finals in 1996 & 1997, winning the championship in ‘97. He ensured players were excelling in the classroom and his athletes attained a 92% graduation rate.

A former offensive lineman from 1991-93 for the Mt. Allison Mounties, Goveia has held coaching positions in the CJFL with the Burlington Braves and Oakville Longhorns. In Burlington, he was head coach and led the club to three provincial finals. He also coached at Assumption High School in Burlington where he once attended and played football. Goveia was a guest coach at the Toronto Argonauts’ training camp each year from 2001-08.

Coach O’Shea enters his fourth season as Head Coach of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in 2017, after formally accepting the role on December 4, 2013. The 30th Head Coach in franchise history led the club to its best record in over a decade (2003) in 2016, finishing with a mark of 11-7. The 11-win season included the league’s best road record at 7-2, while also rattling off seven straight wins after starting the season 1-4. O’Shea’s club finished third in the CFL West Division in 2016, marking the first time in five seasons the club played a postseason game.

In 2014, his first season as Head Coach, O’Shea began to carve out a team- first mentality - something still very evident today - while the club finished with a 7-11 mark. This was followed by an injury-riddled 2015 season in which his team went 5-13.

Universally respected by his players, O’Shea has instilled a mantra of character and hard work inside the Blue Bombers locker room, and a willingness to do whatever it will take to win.

O’Shea took the reins of the Football Club after spending four seasons as the Special Teams Coordinator with the Toronto Argonauts, winning a Grey Cup in 2012. He was a three-time Grey Cup champion as a player during his 16-year CFL career. 2017 will be O’Shea’s 24th year in the Canadian Football League.

O’Shea’s special teams units excelled in Toronto, where he was at the forefront of innovative special teams designs and the mere threat of the trick play had opposing coaches on the alert to fakes and other gadgets. In his final two years there, his coverage teams were the CFL leaders in gaining field position - they were second in punt coverage in 2013. Toronto opponents started with the poorest field position overall in the CFL in 2013 and were third in this category in 2012. In that same year, KR/WR Chad Owens became the first player in league history to lead the CFL in both kickoff return yards and receiving yards. Owens also set a world record for most combined yards in a single season.

In 2011, Chad Owens was, for the second straight season, named the East Division’s Most Outstanding Special Teams Player, as he set the Toronto Argonauts team record for most kickoff return yards in a season. Under O’Shea, Owens became the first player in pro football history to record back-to-back 3,000 combined yards seasons during a stellar 2011 campaign.

For years, Mike O’Shea was the stalwart of his defences and special teams units. He was the undisputed leader inside the locker room and a team captain. O’Shea played 16 CFL seasons – 12 with the Argos and four with Hamilton – winning three Grey Cup championships (1996, 1997, 2004).

O’Shea was a coaches’ player who always put the game and his teammates first. He knew the playbook front to back and because of his hard work, he commanded respect from rookies and veterans alike. He played in 271 regular season CFL games (the most ever by a defensive player), 18 playoff games and three Grey Cup games. He is second on the CFL’s all-time tackles list with 1,151. The native of North Bay, Ontario, was a five-time East Division All-Star (1994-1995, 1997, 1999, 2000) and was named a CFL All-Star and the league’s Most Outstanding Canadian in 1999. In 2006, O’Shea became the first Canadian ever to make at least 1,000 tackles in a career, and in 2007 he was named an All-Time Argo at linebacker.

An advocate for his teammates, O’Shea was a CFLPA player representative for many years and upon leaving the game, he accepted the position of 1st Vice President for the Players’ Association.

O’Shea is an alumnus of the University of Guelph and is a member of the Guelph Gryphons Sports Hall of Fame, and will be inducted into the Canadian Football Hall of Fame in the Fall. He and his wife Richere have three children: Michael, Ailish and Aisling.

Paul LaPolice returns in 2017 as the club’s Offensive Coordinator/Receivers Coach after accepting the position prior to the start of the 2016 season. LaPolice entered into his second stint as the club’s offensive coordinator last season, following a three-year stretch as an analyst with CFL on TSN. LaPolice first came to the Bombers in 2002 as Offensive Coordinator, setting 14 franchise marks during his time leading the club’s offence.

After a quarterback change in week 6, LaPolice’s offence began rolling, finishing fourth in points scored while creating career highs for quarterback Matt Nichols in touchdowns (18), yards (3,666), and completions (327) in just 13 starts.

The 2016 season also saw the Bombers boast one of the league’s best rushing attacks, as running back Andrew Harris finished with 974 yards and four touchdowns. The offence gave up the second fewest sacks in the CFL (tied with BC) with only 35, and produced two CFL All-Stars in Andrew Harris and rookie offensive lineman, Travis Bond.

The New Hampshire native has accumulated fourteen years of CFL coaching experience, six of which were spent in Winnipeg, and worked in Hamilton and Toronto before joining the Riders in 2007. LaPolice led the Saskatchewan offence to a 2009 Grey Cup berth

in his second year as the team’s offensive coordinator, finishing second in offensive scoring and second in touchdowns scored. He was the team’s receivers coach when they won the 2007 Grey Cup, his first season with the Riders.

LaPolice then returned to Winnipeg as Head Coach in 2010 and in his second year, helped manage one of the biggest turnarounds in the league’s history as the Bombers finished first in the East Division for the first time since 2001. LaPolice was named a finalist for the CFL Coach of the Year in 2011, and brought the team to the Grey Cup for the second time in 10 years. He held the position for three seasons, compiling a record of 16 wins in 44 regular season games, a 1-0 playoff record, and the 2011 Grey Cup appearance against the BC Lions.

Before beginning his CFL coaching career, LaPolice broke into coaching at Maine Maritime Academy in 1993. He spent eight seasons in the collegiate coaching ranks, culminating at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute as offensive coordinator, where his offenses broke 21 offensive school records in two seasons and led three championship teams.

Since initially moving to the city in 2002, LaPolice has made Winnipeg his permanent home with his wife Tina and three kids.

Richie Hall returns for his second season as Defensive Coordinator of the Blue Bombers after previously spending four seasons with Saskatchewan in the same role.

In 2017, Hall’s defence set record after record; they crushed the season record for takeaways with an astounding 55 - including 30 interceptions - 13 more than the second best team in that category. Hall’s defence was also 2nd in points allowed in 2017, while his starting halfback and starting safety were both named CFL All-Stars in their rookie seasons.

Hall’s first season as the club’s defensive boss saw three first-year defensive players excel. Defensive end Jamaal Westerman finished second in the league in sacks with 17; defensive back Johnny Adams finished tied for the league lead in interceptions with six; and linebacker Khalil Bass finished with 102 tackles – the most ever by a first-year Bomber and one of only five times a Bomber defender has broken 100 tackles.

Hall saw major success with the Riders prior to joining Winnipeg, winning the Grey Cup in 2013 while posting the league’s number one ranked defence. The league-low 398 points allowed was the lowest total by the Riders since 2002 and second lowest total since the CFL moved to an 18-game schedule in 1986. The team led the league with 24 interceptions while allowing a league low 36 touchdowns.

Hall is a three-time Grey Cup Champion and captured two of the three as a Defensive Coordinator (2007, 2012).

Previous to his time in Regina, Hall was the Head Coach of the Edmonton Eskimos for two seasons (2009, 2010), recording a 16-20 mark and making the playoffs in his first of two seasons there.

Hall was part of the Riders coaching staff for 15 seasons prior to joining Edmonton, spending eight years as Defensive Coordinator and developing a reputation for fielding a top defence year after year.

Before moving into his coaching role, Hall spent nine years playing in the CFL including four seasons with the Roughriders from 1988-1991. He was also a key member of the Roughriders’ 1989 Grey Cup Championship team. During his nine-year career, Hall saw action in 153 regular season CFL games. He was a member of the Western Division All-Star Team on four occasions; 1983 and 1986 with the Calgary Stampeders, and 1988 and 1990 in Saskatchewan. Hall was also named All-CFL for Outstanding Rookie Performance in 1983 with the Stampeders. In 1990, Roughrider fans voted Hall the Roughriders’ Most Popular Player. He was named as the Club’s nominee for Outstanding Defensive Player in 1988.

Hall was born in San Antonio, Texas. He played college football at Colorado State University for the Rams and signed with the Stampeders as a free agent in 1983 following his college career.

With a continued commitment to community involvement, Hall was recognized by the CFLPA in 1990 by winning the Tom Pate award for his outstanding dedication to the CFL, the community and his performances on the field.

Howard returns to the Blue Bombers for his third season in 2017 as the Defensive Line Coach. Howard continues to work with the line daily, including one of the league’s best pass rushers in defensive end Jamaal Westerman.

Howard’s line helped accumulate 35 quarterback sacks last season while working with a rotation of players, including the club’s 2016 draft choice, Trent Corney.

In 2015, Howard helped guide Westerman, a first-year CFL player, to a 17 sack finish, while also racking up 61 defensive tackles and one forced fumble.

Howard joined Winnipeg after spending two seasons in the same role with the Saskatchewan Roughriders.

After coaching the defensive line for the 2013 Grey Cup Champions, his defensive front once again was dominant in 2014, leading the league in sacks with 66. Three of Howard’s starting defensive linemen had ten or more sacks, including the league leader with 15.

Prior to joining the Riders, Howard had spent the previous 21 seasons coaching in the NFL and collegiate ranks, most recently with the University of California where he was the Defensive Line Coach for the 2012 season.

Prior to going to the University of California, Howard had additional stops at the collegiate level with Washington State (2011), UCLA (2006-10), Louisiana Tech (2000-02), Grinnell College (1994-97) and his alma mater Texas A&M (1991-93).

Howard worked for three seasons with the Jacksonville Jaguars (2003-05) as the Assistant Defensive Line Coach. His other NFL coaching experience came as a defensive assistant with the St. Louis Rams, who won Super Bowl XXXIV in Howard’s second season with the team in 2000.

A third round draft choice for the Kansas City Chiefs in 1987, Howard played in the NFL for two seasons as an inside linebacker. He also spent one season with the Barcelona Dragons in the World League of American Football in 1991.

BRAD FOTTYHEAD EQUIPMENT MANAGER

Alain Couture is entering his 15th season with the Winnipeg Football Club in 2017, overseeing the health and well-being of every player on the roster. Couture provides constant updates to the Head Coach on the health statuses of every player, and is ultimately the one with the final say on whether players can return to the field after being injured.

Starting with the Blue Bombers as a student therapist in 2003, Couture became the full-time assistant in 2004. In May of 2005, he graduated from the University of Manitoba with a Bachelor of Exercise and Sport Science/Athletic Therapy degree and became

a Certified Athletic Therapist in June 2005. In 2006, he became the Head Athletic Therapist for the Football Club.

Couture is also a Registered Massage Therapist through the Massage Therapy Association of Manitoba, and a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist through the National Strength and Conditioning Association. His football experience also consists of working in the NFL, as he has worked off-season training camps with the Kansas City Chiefs (2007), Minnesota Vikings (2008), and the San Francisco 49ers (2009).

Entering his 28th season with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in 2017, and his 20th as the Head Equipment Manager, Brad Fotty is the man in charge of ordering, maintaining and repairing all equipment for players during practice and games. His primary duty is the protection of the players by fitting each one with customized equipment for maximum protection. Fotty also coordinates the transportation of the team’s equipment to and from each road stadium.

Fotty began his career with the Blue Bombers in 1990, assisting visiting teams’ equipment staff when in Winnipeg for games. In 1993, he became the Assistant Equipment Manager, a position he held until 1997 when he took on his current post. Fotty also spent nine years as a visiting locker room attendant for the AHL’s Manitoba Moose.

Fotty is instrumental in the success of the Blue Bombers, regularly making quick decisions to not only ensure the safety of the players but to also give the Blue Bombers the best opportunity to succeed.

Fotty has only missed one game in the last 16 seasons – when his wife Sandy gave birth to their second daughter, Brooklyn, in 2009. An avid fisher, Fotty resides in Winnipeg year-round with his wife and two children, Madison and Brooklyn, and enjoys spending his spare time with his family.
